it's very important that everybody knew that. >> that's right. also, if you own an old gas-guzzling car or truck, you'll want to hear this. the government has a new deal for you. there's a new program that could save you thousands of dollars on a new car. coming up, we'll get you the details on that. later, or summer job series continues with my summer job, life guard at the beach. not an easy job. i had to pass all the tests. we had to run in, literally, the hottest sand i ever felt. we had to row in a boat with huge waves and somehow, some way, they convinced me to jet ski. i'm not sure why. i also had to swim at some point. >> you joked earlier that maybe you're the only life guard that can talk and save lives at the same time. >> i thought it was important to motivate the person -- >> follow the sound of my voice. >> everybody survived. can i just tell you? somehow it all worked. we'll get to all that. first, sar palin stepping down as alaska's governor today, formally resigning and t handin down power to her lieutenant governor at a ceremony in

fairbanks, alaska, this afternoon. norah o'donnell joins us live from fairbanks. >> reporter: this is it for sarah palin. in just a few hours, she will resign as governor. she's going to do it here, at a ceremony. and she used her twitter account to tweet that she traveled from anchorage here to fair banks in a camper full of kids with coffee, listening to country music. sarah palin spent her last full day as governor at a picnic in anchorage, serving up hamburgers, hot dogs and alaskan salmon. >> from the bochl my heart, how much i thank you and love you. >> her farewell started in her hometown of wasilla, dressed in a red, right and blue patriot sweatshirt. >> i won't take my time at the podium to talk politics today.
8:04 am
we could do something more worthy than speaking politics. we'll be honoring the families of those who have loved es, who have served or are serving today. >> reporter: today, she arrives in fairbanks with thousands already gathered to celebrate the golden day parade. many people say they don't like she's leaving office early. >> i am disappointed. wish she had stuck it out. >> we're going to miss her as governor. >> reporter: still, the big question remains, what's next for sarah palin? will she run for president? palin told nbc's andrea mitchell it's not yet clear. >> i don't know what the future holds. can't predicthat the nt fish run is going to look like, much less what's going to happen in a couple of years. >> reporter: it's been quite a journey so far, from the first female governor of alaska to the first woman on a republican presidential ticket. >> you know, they say the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? lipstick. >> reporter: her stunning decision to leave office with a year and a half left in her term could hurt her political future. >> it could be ap thetic to just

moderator of "meet the press." good morning to you. >> morning, jenna. >> professor henry gates ss he's ready to sit down and have a beer with the president and sergeant crowley and talk about racial profiling. has the president turned a difficult situaon into a perhaps political win for himself? >> we'll find out. there was some criticism of the president. he felt the need to soften his tone and actually, if not apologize, say he would have said it differently when he was first critical of the cambridge police department. look, this is america's first african-american president who has a unique voice on these matters, who is able to elevate any issue, really, with the bully pulpit of the presidency and chose to speak out on this in a more personal way, both initially and then when he came back out and said it's important for me to talk about it, because it still divides a lot of americans. we do meet at the white house, will this be something that the president wants to publicize further or do it quietly?

either way, a lot of people view it as positive that the two are willing to get together and talk about it and it certainly will be a wider national conversation after this incident. >> we'll have to wait and see how that turns out. norah o'donnell repord governor sarah palin is leaving the governor of office with $1 million. is this enough to recharge and refuel all those rumors that palin, in fact, is looking to run for president again here? >> i don't think any of those really died down. she's in a position. you saw her writing op-ed pieces in newspapers about policy matters she cares about like energy. she's in a position now to travel the country and get on a speaking circuit, to make money but also to talk about some of her ideas. and she has freed up, if you look at it that way, to begin building a national run. certainly all the pieces are in place for her to do that and at least test the waters. from one school of thght, it's easier for her to do that on a national platform rather than
8:10 am
being governor of alaska. though, the criticism that she's received because of stepping down is also something that will trail her. >> let's talk about this health care reform bill. it took another blow there. a specific provision that was supposed to save money won't actually save as much as originally touted and cost savings, bringing key democrats and republicans together and in the fold on this. what can the white house do to not only convince congress, but the american people, that this will, in fact, save money down the line? >> one of the things the white house talks about is putting together an independent commission to help drive down costs in the course of reviewing the bills before they're actually passed. the president has a role to play here if he's going to sell this thing successfully, by saying he's going to drive some real cost cutting within the health re system, which has been his approach. he's also signaled he's willing to raise additional money with some kind of search on wealthier americans. his first priority was bringing
