the propofol is what killed jackson. the medical examiner has not officially released jackson's cause of death. >> for 9,000 amerins waiting for a heart transplant, there's only often a small chance of getting a new heart. now the newest version is giving heart failure patients a new time to live and enjoy life. >> i passed out, i mean, i was out. i was gone. it took eight firings of my defibrillator to bring me back. i think that marked the real steep decline because from that point, i just felt like, you know, my life was really over. >> reporter: it was last october when doctors told freddy moore that he probably would die if he didn't get a heart transplant soon. the 60-year-old virginia man had spent the last 23 years suffering from cardiomyopathy, a congenital disease that causes the hard to slowly stop working. >> it was pretty bad. i was so foregone, i would get up in the morning and i would
11:16 pm
take a shower. i would dry off and i would try to get dressed and i was so worn out, i would have to go to bed to get enough energy to go upstairs. >> reporter: the next best option was a new kind of heart pump. >> really what this does is take over all of the pumping function or assist the heart. >> reporter: that can give heart failure patients as many as five extra years to live. the device is actually attached to the heart. it runs on rechargeable batteries connected through the abdomen. they supply enough power for the pump to last about four hours. >> the majority of patients that are getting this in this country currently remain as a bridge to transplant even though the potential here is for this pump toast for many, many years. >> reporter: at 'nova fairfax hospital the heart transplant specialist said the new devries approved by the fda earlier this year is much smaller than the older heart pumps so they can be
11:17 pm
used by more people. the older pump was too big to fit into many women and smaller men. >> unfortunately in this country now, the amount of people donating hearts has become really very limited, and the number of people who need a heart transplant continue t grow really very exponentially. >> how are you? >> real good. >> reporter: freddy moore said the heart pump has given him new life. >> oh, i can breathe. i can get up and do my daily, necessary things around the house. i can take a shower, thank god, and not be wiped out. i have never been this happy, really, in my life that i can remember. >> doctors hope one day that these artificial heart pumps might be used as a substitute for a transplant. but it's still not clear how long one can last in the human body. he was like up the street on mass avenue and you said you got into a downpour and i was on the other end and sunny skies. >> these things happen. especially in july. you got to be on the sunny side
11:18 pm
of the street. tomorrow, i think we may see a couple of those. those are really isolated. not widespread rains. outside tonight, a pretty sunset in washington. outside our temperaturnow after getting water. but the main ones out here, 76 degrees. we're in the time of the year we -- ready or not, here comes august and also the average temperature begins decreasing. four weeks, the average high 85. tomorrow is only 88. here's what's going on. can you see that high cloudiness and the overall pattern with a little bit of a weak jet out to our southeast. the real strong storms and the real heavy rains, boy, if you have friends on vacation that were out at the beaches, today is not a beach day. there you can see the batch. there are still leftover showers now and not any rumbles of thunder. that has quieted down. but there's still one that's moved out of falker county. and now one moving out towards
11:19 pm
manassas park. tell your gardener to get ready there. and the other one is out around ocean city. that area of rain moved off and there is another little spot up around north of baltimore. and that's about it. tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon especially i think we will be seeing more pop-up variety. a half inch of rain out around the plains. look at ocean city, over an inch and a half of rain today. temperatures 79 degrees, gusty winds. have to check on that, but there were some areas that really did get some heavy, heavy rains. probably some spots over five inches of rain. where's the heat? seattle. 94, portland, oregon, today was 103 degrees. 103. their average temperature for july is one of the hottest julys they have ever had, running foreign 3 degrees above average. for us, there's that little spin in the atmosphere. see that area of showers and thundershowers around oklahoma. that will be, i think, the next possible weather maker for us as we go through tomorrow.
11:20 pm
we will be just humid but as we get on into the day on wednesday, some of those showers will be coming up our way. just a hot day tomorrow. 91. once again, the risk of some of the pop-up variety showers and thundershowers. warm, muggy tomorrow morning. temperatures around 7b0 degrees. by tomorrow afternoon, we will see a lot of sunshine. some of those building clouds once again. more likely for you folks out towards blue ridge, western areas where there's a little bit of extra lift from those mountains. so there's still the risk of a few isolated thundershowers, depending on which side of the street you're on. and we're into the pattern now, light southwesterly winds, humid. overnight temperatures, not getting a whole lot below 70 degrees. and each afternoon, but more likely -- more likely on wednesday, each afternoon, thursday into friday, there's
11:21 pm
that risk of some afternoon thunderstorms. i think things will settle down. right now the weekend, august, are we ready? it's almost there. >> do we have a choice? >> we have no choice. august right now looks like it will start off sunny, warm and humid of all things. >> let me write that down. still to come tonight -- final space walk before the shuttle comes home. a track and field competition done anything but conventionally. and in sports, the nats going all out trying to win if we don't act, medical bills will wipe out their savings.
11:22 pm
if we don't act, she'll be denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition. and he won't get the chemotherapy he needs. if we don't act, health care costs will rise 70%. and he'll have to cut benefits for his employees. but we can act. the president and congress have a plan to lower your costs and stop denials for pre-existing conditis. it's time to act.
11:23 pm
they're going for three in the row. that woulde the first time ever. >> i got to tell you something, it would be a big deal if the nationals won three in a row. you have no idea what they did tonight.
11:24 pm
this is a team that looks completely different. it was the fact that outfielder josh willingham became just the 13th major leaguer to hit two grand slams in the same game. >> wow. >> the nationals pummeled the brewers. we're in milwaukee, bottom of the third. brewers up 2-0. greg stamand facing felipe lopez. lopez lines one down the left-field line. watch adam dunn. not the best defender but he comes up with the catch. this guy takes some heat for his fielding, and i think he pretty much shut them all up, don't you? now we go to the fifth inning. that will hurt him. tied game. josh willingham has the bases loaded. see you later. willingham clears the bases with the grand slam, his first of the season. nationals take the 6-2 lead but now here's the deal. the sflevery next inning, bases loaded again. willingham said i'm not done.
11:25 pm
crushes it to center. it is out of there for his second grand slam of the game. 13th time in history, two grand slams in the same game. the nationals win it 14-6. the orioles lost to the royals 5-3. commissioner roger goodell said he accepts michael vick is sincere when he tells him he wants to turn his rife around and now he has a chance to prove it. michael vick got what he wanted, sort of. he is reinstated, which means he is free to sign with a team. however, he's reinstated with the condition he cannot play a regular season game until week six. so after meeting with michael vick and gng through a very thorough process, goodell chose to give him a second chance. if he is signed he can take part in train activities but cannot play until the final two preseason games. goodell said he will consider him for full reinstatement before game six. >> i am not here to punish anybody. we're here to extent players'
11:26 pm
veers rather than limit players' careers. that is important to do if we're going to recognize them for the standards and hold them accountable for anybody in the envelope nx. i believe michael understands that. i believe he deserves the opportunity to earn his way back onto the field. but he will have to earn it. it is up to him now. we will support him in the way i outlined in my decision. >> michael vick did say he appreciates the opportunity and expressed that through his agent. what did you say? you're feeling al davis? >> i'm feeling al davis. >> you think he's going to the west coast? i think anything can happen. finally tonight, the verizon center, it was rocking. wwe came to town, and guess what, they brought in shaquille o'neal as the guest host. let me take you down ringside. this is where want to see shaquille o'neal. a special tag team match. big show. you know him, right? chris jericho versus the
