a on theshe o othn snarled theh omnathna sed theor m cngtenimu for hours. ascrkeanher crashed, li f and burned thisorni mng nsr the van dorn street exit in alexandria. tracee wilkins was the first reporter on the scene and is there now. >> reporter: over my shoulders, they are towing the tanker. and this is a process that is still continuing. traffic on the beltway in alexandria backed up as far as prince george's county this morning, after a tanker flipped over and bursts into flames. traffic was a nightmare. it happened just before 7:00 a.m. >> when i got off the bridge, i just took route 1. it was so ridiculous. >> reporter: a driver hit another truck parked on the side of the road after he admittedly

fell asleep at the wheel. >> he sideswiped it and caused it to overturn, and the fuel spilled and ignited. >> the cab of the tanker was ripped from the rest of the truck and crushed. the driver escaped with only minor injuries. at one point the beltway was completely shut down, and then for hours several lanes remained off limits in both directions as they opened and closed lanes and nearby ramps so emergency vehicles could get to the scene. >> there was a cleanup crew that has been called. the vehicle overturned has to be up righted, and the recovery resources are on the scene to do that. >> reporter: once again, they have the southbound lanes shut down temporarily while they try to get the overturned tanker out of here and move some of the emergency vehicles out of here. i can tell you that just about an hour ago, my photographer got

caught up in the traffic. it took us about an hour and a half to get to the accident scene. it is really a mess. try and avoid it if you can. that driver has been charged with reckless driving. back to you in the studio. >> that is a terrible commute this morning. thank you very much. >> it looks like the mess continues. jerry edwards has more on the part of the coverage. good morning, jerry. >> the good news is progress is being made. as tracee mentioned, it takes quite a bit of work to get one of these accidents out of the roadway. and the good news, the tanker truck was not carrying fuel. and that was helpful. now, we do have the inner loop completely closed off, and as the officer said, a fuel spill

so the cleanup has to continue for a little while longer. there is another angle we can show you further down off of one of the traffic cameras, and show you that as it stands rightnow, the outer loop of the beltway, all of the lanes are open at this hour. the outer loop is getting by. again, it's the inner loop blocked off and will be for a while. do not anticipate trying to travel that stretch of the beltway for a couple more hours. and because of the osure, the delays extend back to the wilson bridge. all are carrying a lot of overload of traffic. we will keep you updated through the next hour. back to you. >> thank you, jerry. >> thank you. we are following developments out of a county where a man was found shot to death outside of his germantown apartment. this was a police involved

plan to test them for the virus since the test is uncomfortable and the results would not alter the treatment plan already in place. and then they announced who will get priority for the upcoming swine flu vaccine. pregnant women are at the top of the list because so far of the 266 deaths in the u.s.,5 were women. that accounts for 6% of the death, even though pregnant women account for 1% of the population. doctors say they are vulnerable to complications that can lead to serious illess or death. and a friend of mine said it's cold outside. >> cold? >> i don't belve her. >> i have not been out in the last several hours. what is the temperature out there right now, chuck? >> it's cold in the studio, i know that. it's not -- >> yeah, that is for sure. >> temperatures outside are hovering close to the 80 degree

we learned the north carolina man accused of master mining the international terror plot grew up in the d.c. area. he attended high school in the area 23 yrs ago. federal authorities arrested him along with two of his sons and four other men. and they are all accused of want to go carry out what is described as a violent jihad overseas. and they are still searching for a eighth suspect that belonged to the group. and tomorrow president obama is scheduled to have a beer at the white house with henry lewis

website. the heat is on. a heat wave is all but melting parts of the pacific northwest this week. temperatures in portland, oregon, in this video, sailed past the triple digit mark reading 106 degrees. and that was not enough to stop these kids from getting out and having fun. unfortunately for them there is no immediate relief in sight unless you are in the pool. the triple-digit temperatures are expected to last until tomorrow. in north carolina, a powerful storm brought down power lines and trees last night. some of the trees toppled down on the house in charlotte. the house is too dangerous to live in. no word on how much damage the storm caused across the state. down in louisiana, torrential rains left high flood waters. two feet of water reported along the main street in spring hill. many roads around the town had to be shut down. a number of area stores were

florida levels in dew point humidity. in the last 40 days, we had a little over an inch and a quarter of rainfall. and the showers in the forecast are more good than bad for most of us. outside right now, 79. frederick, maryland, 76. wind chester, virginia, 75 degrees. warmer down into southern maryland, and out on the eastern shore as well. a little break or two of sunshine put temperatures in those locations up in the low 80s at this point in time. rainfall amounts, we had a little this morning. you folks in charles county, quite the powerhouse thunderstorm went across there. lightning was reported with it. a lot of people at 3:00 a.m. wake up call, not courtesy of the kids but of mother nature this morning. and here is the check of live

doppler. not much rain around the immediate metropolitan area. and there are light showers in baltimore county, and more organized light rainfall up into the panhandle of west virginia as well. we will take a wider view of it. most of the central parts of virginia and down into tied water will break into a little sunshine, and that will help enhance the severe weather risk later today. general rain showers coming out of west virginia. and we will stay cloudy for the rest of the day. with a chance for some rain showers and a possibility of thunderstorms, again, our best risk for severe weather today will be south and east of i-95. you folks under southern maryland, out on the eastern shore, that's where the greatest risk will be. plenty of moisture in the atmosphere. and this little pressure going through the state of ohio, that will fire off rain showers and one or two strong to severe thunderstorms. that's the area for the risk for

severe weather today. and then we will show there are showers and thunderstorms going through portions of texas. and texas with the drought, they are missing out on the rain. and texas is three hours behind us. it's 82 degrees in seattle today. seattle might make 100 degrees for the first time since they have had weather records out there. never officially made it to 100. portland, oregon, yesterday, 106 degrees. their all-time record is 107, and they may tie that later this afternoon. if you have any friends out in the pacific northwest, mail them a sno-cone, because they will need it out there. and for us, thunderstorms will last until midnight tonight. and then tomorrow, mid-90s around town, with a heat index up near 100 degrees. if you like it hot and steamy, wait 24 hours. cloudy warm and humid today. a few strong thunderstorms cannot be ruled out.

preserve the rig of appeal. the judge said his verdict should not be influenced by anything in that motion. jacks was charged with murdering her four daughters, and leaving their bodies in the house for months before they were found. now to the latest on the investigation surrounding the death of michael jackson. fbi agents raided the home and medical office belonging to the singer's personal physician. it's the second time authorities have targeted the doctor's proper in less than a week. >> reporter: this is the first look at dr. conrad murray since jackson's death. he is casually walking around the country club just after the raid. >> this is the residence -- >> reporter: federal agents and the l.a.p.d. showed up at the upscale home, and the docto himself was there to greet him.
