>> the astronauts are back from a record-setting mission to the international space center. and we are joined live from the kennedy space center. and it's always a thrilling picture to see that thing come back and land. >> it certainly is. tell us about it. >> reporter: it's beautiful today, especially because there was some concern over the weather this morning, but the weather held off with the showers. let's see if we have the video. really just beautiful "endeavour," and the crew returning after the 16-day mission. one of the longest ever. one of the first, they had 13 people living together at the international space station. they put on the last part of the billion-dollar japanese lab. they will be able to have space experiments. and another experiment, the japanese astroatutths thame

back after 4 1/2 months have been doing an experiment of his own. he has not changed his underwear in the last month. it's part of an experiment to test high-tech odor-free clothing. he said his crew mates did not say anything to him, or notice anything, and he is looking forward to getting back to the ground. the shuttle is on the landing strip. they have to let it cool down and some of the dangerous gases that accumulate vent, and then in a short time we should see the astronauts emerging from the space shuttle. and then there is talk about the future of the program. seven more shuttle trips left. and they are talking about some of the options of going to the moon and beyond. also talking about how in order to finish the seven shuttle missions, they may have to

let's go to a developing story right now in the district. >> that's where the man accused of killing chandra levy has just finished a court hearing. he is charged with first-degree murder in levy's death. prosecutors say they have witnesses that will testify against the man in court. they are expected to say he raped his former cellmate, and committed lewd acts in front of female guards and threatened to kill everybody he could if released from jail. they have another witness who was attacked and stabbed on a jogging trail by a man who she describes as looking like juan decay. it's a vpoisonous snake tha

on the interstate, in particular, interstate 95, and we are told everything is over to the shoulder. notice the hov lanes still pointed northbound, and that could be the reason we have on a friday a lot of traff southbound. we will watch that carefully for you. elsewhere, an accident on the bay bridge. something we don't like to hear. that's for sure. westbound. police are wrapping it up. not having too much impact right now. 270 between frederick and the capital beltway, looks like we are doing all right. >> thank you, jerry. it was supposed to get gas guzzlers off the roads, but the cash for clunkers program is running out of cash. obama said the program will last through today, but the popularity has become a threat to its survival. jay gray reports. >> reporter: the federal

government is apparently putting the breaks on the cash for clunkers trade-in vehicle program. according to sources on capitol hill, key senators were notified the rebates would be suspended because the program is on the verge of using up a billion dollars of funds for car shoppers. the program gave consumers up to $4,500 if they traded in a gas guzzler for something more fuel efficient. >> it increased our business by about 30%. >> reporter: in less than a week, 22,000 people took advantage of the program, spending $96 million. >> a huge backlog in processing thousands of deals raised concerns that auto dealers may have already driven pass the

a dozen local high school students are back home after spending the last week quarantined in china. they arrived at dulles airport last night and were greeted by anxious parents and friends. the teens came from several different schools. after arriving in beijing for a field trip earlier this month, several tested positive for that the swine flu. some were hospitalized while others were forced to stay in hotel rooms. >> we had to wear facial masks. and then the funny thing is, by the next day, all of them had to put facial masks on. and they were like, yeah, are you going to run away from us

now? >> although the students did spend most of the trip inside hotel rooms, they did get to do some sightseeing before they returned home. >> do you think they had to sit in the hotel room by himself, and watch chinese television. >> how did you spend your summer? >> locked in a hotel room in beijing. if you pick up the phone, you can't dial anybody, because you cannot understand everything. it's true. >> and the weather? we will have more down before the week is out. we have chance for strong to severe thunderstorms coming this afternoon. outside right now, bonus sunshine coming through. as a result, the temperature hopped up to 85 degrees right now. the dew point is steamy 72.

and the heaviest ban of rain will be in southeastern pennsylvania, and you may get a severe thunderstorm watch there in a bit. this line of showers moving through harrisenburg, and charlotte county, you may have a few showers and thunderstorms. we will have to keep a close eye on this here over the next couple days. no rain for now around the washington area. low pressure is tracking its way up through southeastern pennsylvania. that's where the greatest risk for severe weather will be today. we have our own risk for later this afternoon. there is the severe risk going from baltimore and wasngton all the way to north carolina. the next rain system after this one is starting to show signs of development across the state of texas. it will follow tt weather front and bring us the next chance of rain sunday afternoon and sunday evening. just sort of reminding, they have a chance for rain tonight,

and saturday will be a day to get outside and enjoy the weather. heree go, thunderstorms, we will have severe weather today, and the best likelihood is between 3:00 and 4:00 this afternoon, and 10:00 this evening. and most of the rain will be gone when you wake up on saturday morning. and maybe a few lingering sprinkles. and then most of us will enjoy a dry saturday afternoon. and rain and thunderstorms likely. some of them could reach severe limits. keep your weather eye to the sky. if you come up, go ahead and get inside. stay inside until you hear 30 minutes until you hear the last rumbles of thunder. and then a little unsettled pattern coming back by the middle of next week. rain during the week, we always appreciate. if you are doing sailing tomorrow on the chesapeake bay. sunday watch out for a passing shower. and if you are going to the coast, ocean city, it will be a

a southern california boy has three complete strangers to thank this morning for saving his life. the 6-year-old nearly drowned in a swimming pool, but fortunately good samaritans were nearby. >> scariest thing i have seen in my life. i had a dead boy in my arms. >> a gatd pool, and three strangers and one lucky little boy. this is the story of 6-year-old joshua, full of life, a far cry from the scene sunday outside children's hospital when he arrived on a gurney. it started at 8:30 in the morning, when he snuck out and climbed a section of fence and went for a swim. >> he was at the bottom, like,

welcome back. let's take a look at what is happening right now at 11:30. the space shuttle "endeavour" is back on earth after landing beautifully at the space kennedy center less than an hour o. the man accused of killing chandra levy was in court today during a hearing. his lawyers said they have a list of 10 other possible suspects in the murder. however, prosecutors say they have a new witness that will testify that she wasttacked and stabbed on her jogging trail by a man that looked like the suspect. the white house is

struggli to keep the cash for clunkers alive. $1 billion had been set aside to help replace the gas guzzlers. the white house is trying to figure out how to keep the program funded, and congress is working on that as well today. it looks like they are working towards finding the money for the program. we could be seeing rough weather later today. >> chuck bell joins us now from storm center. >> good morning, everybody. it's fairly cloudy outside. just to the west of washington, and a little bit of sunshine if you go east of i-95 towards the chesapeake bay. and heading up towards maryland and most of the rain is up in portions of pennsylvania. we will have more opportunities for showers and thunderstorms later on today. u see the first patch of rain dried up. i don't think the next one will dry up as it approached. 85 in washington.

75 in haguer's town. and here is a regional look at the radar here. more rain and thunderstorms moving into far southwestern virginia. this is part of a weather front that will bring along with it the risks of severe weather. and the greatest threat will be to the north of us. just keep a weather eye and ear to the sky. cloudy skies will be the rule for this afternoon. rain likely and some thunderstorms possible. some could be on the strong side. good news for the extended forecast. tomorrow, mostly sunny and hot. high temperature near 90 degrees, and more of a chance for needed rain showers on sunday. lower humidity moves in for the early parts of next week. on the whole, i think it will be a pretty good weekend. current temperatures, though, currently in the mid-80s.

collapsed. nearby row houses were evacuated as a precaution. there are still many questions surrounding the massive house fire in washington. firefighters say one reason it got so out of control was the nearest working hydrant was several blocks away. they looked at the damageith the homeowner. they say the water and sewer authority will face tough questions. >> they have a very serious infrastructure challenge that they have to resolve, as well as management challenges they have to address. >> there was sufficient flow to fight the fire. it was a horrifying scene in wisconsin when a suv flipped and burned, but scarier, it contained a mother and her two children, both under the age of 5. two off-duty firefighters pulled out the child that was trapped,

but their heroism did not stop there. >> reporter: 4-year-old d.j. harper remains in critical condition, badly burned. >> you can imagine with a 4-year-old, it's very scary. burns hurt. >> reporter: just over a week ago, d.j. and his mother and sister travelled to milwaukee to tennessee, when their suv hit a tree, flipped on its side and burned. it trapped them inside. in a remarkable rescue caught on tape, two brothers, off-duty firefighters, risks their lives to free d.j. from his booster seat, pulling him from the flaming wreck with their bare hands. >> for that minute and 17, that was my son when i see the little boy and i hear the screams, and we were just acting on what we

have been trained to do. period. >> reporter: it has what happened since the rescue they have not been trained for. d.j.'s family, uninsured and cash-strapped need help. and so john and joe and their families are leading fund-raising efforts to lend a hand. there is a website fund to help with medical bills, and d.j.'s family has been flooded with everything from clothing and toys to cash donations. >> it means a lot to us. it really does. i mean, just from all over the world, from chile to california. >> reporter: in there room at the ronald mcdonald house, their parents are overwhelmed. >> what do you think of them coming to your aid? >> there are still good people out there in this world, and this world is not all about violence and hurt. >> i can't ever repay them. the only way to repay them is to pay it forward to another family

manslaughter vegs gags. the search warrant reveals for the first time the authorities were specifically looking for records relating to the purchase, transfer, receiving, ordinarily and delivery and storage of propofol, the anaesthetic sources say murray gave jackson the day he died. >> it's not like the death of heath ledger or anna nicole smith, where they could die at their own hands. have you to have somebody else injecting michael with the drugs. >> reporter: police walked out with evidence from his computer hard drive, and his samsung cell phone, and his apple iphone and blackberry. dr. murray is facing foreclosure on his home. from his past, this 1994 mugshot emerged taken when dr. murray was arrested for domestic

and it's up again by 7.5%. a little gain on the session after we had i will say mixed economic data. the preliminary reading on gdp for the second quarter coming in less than expected. economists were looking for 1.5% decline. some glimmer of hope there. the first quarter was revised lower. and with the second quarter preliminary reading, that marks four consecutive negative quarters for economic intraction. that's something we have never done before, since they starred to keepaco cash for unkers, and the largest listed auto
