we begin this afternoon with severe weather warning. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. it is wild out there, folks. right now, we do have that severe thunderstorm warning. veronica johnson and bob ryan double-teaming it. tracking the rain and storms closer to our area. overhead now. veronica? >> jim and pat, it is a severe thunderstorm watch that remains up until 9:00 p.m. we no longer have any more warnings in effect. boy, just a couple of hours ago we had plenty of severe thunderstorm warnings. and even some tornado warnings up around frederick county, maryland. this is what is left of it. just a general area of some moderate and a few yes, ma'am bedded areas wit rain extended through areas of d.c. and around prince george's county. speaking of that heavy rain that came through here let me show you video shots earlier about hour a half, two hours ago out of north west d.c. the heavy rain throughout the area and we did have high winds coming through with that. meanwhile, as we talk more to

about what's left across the area, zoom in and ee the most areas around the beltway, pretty quiet. looking down to the south and east now, around clinton area and northern charles county and through southern prince george's county. that's where some of the heaviest cells are left. but no severe thunderstorm warnings. let's talk about the damage. bob? >> well, we have had, veronica, the thing that has been unusual about this line, it has been moving through so fast but the tops -- the depth usually when we see thunderstorms, they can be up to 30,000, 40,000 feet on doppler. we are seeing tops only about 10,000 feet but with still a lot of spin in the atmosphere. that was the reason for the tornado warnings. fortunately, no reports of any tornadoes but there have been strong winds, winds gusted to 75 miles an hour, montgomery county, also around clarksburg and late damage reports, homes and a barn damaged in new market and frederick county. and also, in carroll county,

there has been damage. and this is clarksburg. look at the wind gust there. 60 miles an hour. wind gusts in clarksburg from some of the networks. also, in the eastern shore, there have been strong winds there. those storms are now heading over towards the eastern ore. there you can siever only can a has been here on top of things since early this morning. the extent still of that watch but looks like, i think, this is probably the batch that's coming through now. heading into prince george's county. not anyightning with these storms. that's the other feature because they are so shallow but still are moving very rapidly with a lot of spin. >> the heavy rain earlier today, i believe we have that tape out northwest d.c. because the neighborhoods there, you can see some of the winds picking up a bit. again, hour and a half to two hours ago. lot of locations seeing as much as a half to three-quarters of an inch of rain. this, again, out od.c. what'st d.c. what's left for the evening, still what we could have some pockets throughout this area.

to keep the program funded. brian mooar has the story from washington. >> reporter: it is the same story, auto dealerships across the country. >> our phones have been ringing off the hooks and not only that, we are selling eight or ten a day from each store sometimes. >> reporter: new cars flying off the lots, gas guzzlers being left in the dust. >> saturday and monday and part of tuesday, we were just going crazy. >> reporter: a uncle sam's offer of rebates up to $4500 has given the auto industry a sudden boost. >> we estimate that about 220,000-some vehicles have been sold. >> a few weeks guy there were skeptics that weren't sure the cash for clunkers program would work. >> reporter: but the program's overnight success has become a big headache for washington. cash for clunkers has blown through its billion dollar budget in less than a week and now washington is scrambling to keep it funded.

>> the bill is passed -- >> reporter: before going on its august break, the house voted to pump in another $2 billion in stimulus money while several republicans supported the bill, others called it another expensive bailout for the auto industry. >> maybe we should have a cash for cluckers program and pay people to eat chicken. >> we decided to give out free money and now we are surprised when people love it and take advantage of the program. >> reporter: some are hoping congress can keep cash for clunkers on track. buyers get their deal up front and have nothing to worry about but the dealers might not be as fortunate if cash for clunkers were to stall. on capitol hill, brian mooar, news4. >> if you have questions about the cash for clunkers program you can logon to the program's official website. cars.gov. pat? connecticut senator christopher dodd announced today that he has prostate cancer.

the 65-year-old democrat says the disease is in its early stages. he's scheduled to undergo surgery during the senate's august recess. dodd is up for re-election in 2010 and has the illness will not affect those plans. he told reporters during a press conference at his hartford office today that he feels fine. dodd has been working long hours at one of the key players of the effort to overhaul the nation's health care system. new details today in the chandra levy murder case. the man accused of killing levy was in court today and scheduled to go on trial l in january. her remains were found in rock creek park in 2002 a year after she disappeared. before her death, the former intern was romantically linked to california congressman gary condit who is not a suspect. but the demise of his political career is blamed on the case. today guandique's defense attorney says they have a list of ten other possible suspects. they asked for more time to

interview those suspects. the judge denied the request to post poen january's scheduled trial date. until then, the defense will be going through 5,000 pages of evidence provided by prosecutors. it was a serious snake scare that cleared out an entire courtroom this morning. witnesses say a venomous copperhead snake, like this one, was spotted in a juvenile holding cell today at the alexandria courthouse. a dpepty chased the snake and tried to trap it under a box in a courtroom hallway but it escaped through a pipe inside of a boiler room. the situation interrupted some proceedings which had to be moved into another courtroom. animal control officials went to the courthouse but the snake was not located. more animal sightings in our area. this time a bear at a daycare center in gainesville. richard powell who has a child at the daycare center said he spotted the black bear eating out after trash container last

sunday. the department of game and inland fisherys were called in. so far the bear is still on the loose. keith garvin will have much more on this story at 5:00. one of the longest ever space missions is over now. space shuttle "endeavour" came home to earth late this morning making a picture-perfect landing. it capped a 16 -- day trip fraught with many problems but many successes. kristen dahlgren has our story. >> reporter: after 16 days, "endeavour" glided to a stop on the florida runway. the astronauts beaming as they stepped back on solid ground. >> what a fantastic mission. we are thrilled to be a part of a team that is able to accomplish missions like this. >> reporter: it was an end to a mission that was full of new beginnings. >> what an amazing team of accomplishment this was. a truly phenomenal mission. >> waits theirst time 13 people had ever lived together on the international space

station. and over five space walks astronauts attached the last piece of the billion dollar japanese lab. a front porch for space experiments. the experiment that has a lot of people talk sing one by a japanese astronaut who spent the last 4 1/2 months on the international space station. he wore the same underwear for the last month. testing new high-tech odor-free material. >> i wore them for a month. my members never complained for a month. i think the experiment went fine. >> reporter: as "endeavour" sailed home it was mission accomplished in more ways than one. the space station left better equipped than ever and another shuttle safely home at the aging space krft near the planned retirement in 2010. and so nasa is now hoping it can do that seven more times as the shuttle program comes to a close next year. "discovery" is next off the launch pad. that launch is scheduled for

it was an early morning for dedicated brides to be at the mazza galleria, the filene's basement. the capital area has the running of the brides sale which kicked off at 8:00. a record number of women spam peted into the store to try to grab t wedding gown of their dreams. the discounts are deep. some dresses cost as much as ten grand will be priced as low as $250. >> wow. they stormed that store. meanwhile, veronica and bob are tracking some severe storms in the washington area. they are in the storm center. veronica? >> that we are.

the severe thunderstorm watch remains until 9:00 p.m. but thinking national weather service may take this down early. let's pan around the area because -- because down the water, near oxon hill area and national reagan airport, a weather watcher or viewer that called in and said that the thought they possibly saw a water spout. so, you know, this is one of those days with lots of spin in the atmosphere again. lots of spin, lots of change in wind direction with height but this has been a lot of low-level stuff. didn't see a lot of lightning with it when it raced through, 35 to 45 miles per hour. this line that's now mainly east of the area. let's go ahead and zoom on in, right around the beltway. 495. you can see a lot of the activity just some showers with some imbedded moderate rains left around clinton and wall door much area, further down to the south. we do not have any more severe thunderstorm warnings or tornado warnings in effect. you n see around the stafford

area, sometime imbedded moderate rain left. the heaviest cells now on the eastern shore of maryland, getting to move into delaware. the area picking up a quarter of an inch of rain to an inch and a half in frederick and that's where the nasty cells were, western howard county and carroll county and frederick county in maryland. airport delays not just here. around reagan national. new york city, 83 minutes. boston up to 53. almost an hour with the same line, the same front that's been racing off to the east and with the low pressure still hanging out south and west of our area, we will see, i think, a few more, few more strong storms. it is -- questionable if any of those will be worn down later. thunderstorms conning up until 11 owe xlohgs m. or midnight. 72, the temperature. we saw the temperature drop and hit a high today of 90 degrees. today was our fifth 90-degree day for the month of july as we wrap things up. last year we had 14 for the month of july.

more on the severe weather and first picture now coming in. >> pictures of damage in frederick county. veronica johnsons that late rest we have lye chopper video out of frederick county, maryland. this is where a lot of the damage of reports were today. folks there cleaning up some branches which looks like large branches in the area. it was up around that area where wind gusts were reported up to 74 miles per hour. this is ijamsville, maryland. a bit of damage. folks cleaning up in that area. wind gusts to 74 miles per hour. also around the new market area, reports of some structural damage and downed power lines in the area of frederick county, maryland, as well. what's left across the area, a look at the radar. we are kind of in the clear right now. some showers further south of the area. just down around charles count and southern prince george's county. but nothing like what we saw

pretty extensive airport delays, all the way up into areas of new york and boston. we will talk more about the weekend and take a look at the 7-day forecast in just a few minutes. back to you. >> thank you, veronica. well, she got plenty of attention for -- at the center of a bizarre snooping case. >> two ohio police chiefs have been charged with felonies now for allegedly spying on the surrogate mother. and conspiring to sell her personal belongings. access hollywood's billy bush has details. >> police chief carpenter, bridgeport police chief and his father-in-law, also the bridgeport mayor's son, were arrested wednesday night in connection with an ongoing investigation regarding the surrogate mother for actress sarah jessica parker and actor matthew broderick. the three turned themselves in and were quickly released.

apparently in a move to avoid attention. >> the processing taking care of, hoopla or paparazzi. >> reporter: accused of illegal entering the house of the surrogate that was carrying the twins of sarah and matthew in may. allegedly to find fodder for celebrity tabloids. >> if the allegations are true that they were trying to somehow get some information to sell to tabloids, i mean, it is really taking it to a much different level. this is just absolutely outrageous. >> reporter: in a phone interview with wtop maintains his innocence. >> 100% innocent in this, as my department is as well. >> reporter: the harassment was of serious concerns to parker when i spoke to her this past may. the woman carrying the twins has been identified. not only identified, she has been followed. >> i mean, really, the most unsavory things have been done.

i mean, she's -- you know, had her phone hacked, her personal computer information hacked. she has had threats against her and she's had people come to her door and say incredibly shocking things to her. >> reporter: officials in the two towns are taking a wait and see approach. >> if he is innocent, that's fine. if something else turns up we will handle it then. >> as far as i know nothing has been made public yet. until my law director gives me a call, i -- i know nothing. >> we are also learning new details about the case of a woman accused of killing her pregnant neighbor and cutting the fetus from her womb. julie corey is the suspect in this gruesome murder. her boyfriend says that he thought the kidnapped baby was his own. he says his girlfriend lied to him about being pregnant last fall shortly after they broke up. he was with corey and the baby in a new hampshire homeless

shelter when police showed up with their guns drawn to arrest corey this week. and the baby is safe and is now back in massachusetts. corey is still in jail in new hampshire. bail has been set at $2 million. michael jackson's family is reportedly very happy were w the custody agreement reached for the pop star's children. that's according to katherine jackson's attorney. she will be the guardian of her three grandchildren. the biological mother of the two oldest and debbie rowe will get visitation rights. she has been largely absent from the children's lives. rowe's attorney says the agreement is a dignified outcome. d.c. delegate eleanor holmes norton is taking on congress in an effort to get funding for the district's needle exchange program. she's fighting the house amendment to reinstate a ban on using federal tax dollars t hand out clean needles to drug addicts within 1,000 feet of any place where children may gather. until 2007, d.c. was the only

we already know that the ijamsville area up through frederick county there with some extensive damage and a lot of trees down in that location. those were the areas earlier today as the thunderstorms came through. wind gusts up to 70 to 75 miles per hour. so a lot of damage in that area further north there. there's some of the video out finksburg, maryland, with our chopper. also some damage reports around montgomery county with the wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour. this was just north and west of the clarksburg, maryland, area. carroll county, nine large hard wood trees down and, of course, the other damage that we mentioned earlier out of ijamsville. loudoun county reporting one-inch hail in the lucketts area. today we were up to 90 degrees. now much, much cooler. still quite a bit of humidity and moisture out there. so what's left here for the overnight period, i think, more

that has to be confirmed through national weather service. and it affected approximately 15 homes that received from severe damage with portions of roofs missing to minor damage with windows and shingles missing on various hos. >> anybody -- i'm sorry. anybody home in those houses, any injuries reported so far? >> at this time we have one minor injury. she was treated and released at the scene with a wrist injury. >> bruce, could you get tornadoes or anything like tornado strength winds up there often? >> usually standard thunderstorms come through. in 1996, we had the tornado came through approximately five miles from this location. >> so you weathered this storm pretty well. can you tell us where -- we are looking at video now of the homes that had the roofs torn

have had, folks. welcome to "news4 at 5:00," everybody. i'm jim hand. >> i i'm wendy rieger and we begin tonight with some severe weather. it passed through the area today, as you know. these pictures just in from the whiskey creak golf club in ijamsville, maryland. trees snapped in half and buildings damaged by strong winds out there. there wereo reports of injuries. the latest on what happened there, what's ahead from bob rye zblan we had an afternoon of very, very busy weather. earlier tornado warnings. right now, right now, we have the watches that have gone down. this is from finksburg and looks like the area that was hit the hardest with possibly a tornado. tornado warning went out at 2:20, about 2:20 this afternoon. talking to some of the folks here. it appears it happened about 20 minutes later. so there was a large lead time. this one is for the warning that was for parts of montgomery county and on into frederick county and then continued into carroll county. so you can see there were a number of homes this were damaged
