finksburg area. either from straight line winds which may have been up to 60 miles to 70 miles an hour or a tornado. the folks from the weather service will certainly be surveying that damage. here is the good news. take a look at doppler. heavy showers and some thunder and lightening but when these storms came through there wasn't a lot of lightning. the good news is, as i will zoom in to washington the watch has gone down for most of the area and shortly go down to you folks into charles county. you are still getting showers down there. boy, when they comethrough, they were really heavy rain and the main feature was that these -- storms came through moving at about 40 miles an hour. look at the wind gusts up at clarksburg, maryland. and the temperature now 70 degrees. the winds, 60 miles an hour. veronica has been here dale and keeping track on a very, very busy weather day up here, too. >> that has. as you know, bob, most of the damage up across northern maryland, frederick county, maryland, and neighboring

carroll county, maryland, where winds up around the bellenger creek, one mile northeast of there, were clocked at 74 miles per hour. also, around the new mket area. quite a bit of structural damage in tha area. same thing for montgomery county. the high winds through the area, mainly north. also 60-mile-per-hour gusts reported four miles northwest of clarksburg and carroll county with the trees down and structural damage that we talked about. the hard wood trees and national weather service assessing that damage around finksburg. probably within the next 24 hours with quite a bit of damage up there and possibly winds between 60 and 70. >> and the main feature was how rapidly these storms had moved through. so they moved through so rapidly now that the watch that was originally up until 9:00 has now been taken down as of 5:00. and take a look at the regional radar. you can see that that line is continuing to race towards the east. there it is now. it is out over the eastern shore. there are still severe thunderstorm watches in new york

and have been catching it, too, with not only severe thunderstorm watches but also some warnings. and wanted to show you the other feature, obviously, on a friday afternoon when woe see this. the airport delays and show that because up around new york city, if you have anyone coming in or traveling up to parts of the northeast, especially around new york city, we are gng to be seeing delays and real long delays throughout the remainder of the afternoon and evening. again, take a look at that wide view of the airport delays. several hours now, there it is, of airport delays and there have been ground holds, obviously, when these storms come through at 40 to 50 miles per hour. but once again, the good news is that we are now no longer under a severe thunderstorm watch. the last of the showers really moving into southern maryland, still with gusting winds and for you folks there, st. mary's county, charles county, northern neck, that watch will probably be going down, too.

it will be still some time recovery and obviously also the damage surveyed to see straight line winds or was it -- indeed a small tornado. the interesting thing in a way was these storms, when they came through, were only the tops at about 15,000 feet. that's the reason they came through with very, very little lightning. but, boy, did they pack a punch when they did come through with a very heavy rain, too. back to you. >> sure did. bob, thank you. a day in court for the suspect accused in the murder of washington intern chandra levy. attorneys for guandique say that they have evidence other people may have been involved. pat collins has been following this case for us. he is here now with more. >> reporter: they didn't mention any names. but in court today the defense attorneys say they have a different theory about who killed chandra levy. yet another twist in the high-profile murder case. in superior court today, the defense attorneys representing the man charged in the murder of chandra levy say they know of r

possible suspects. those defense attorneys represent ingmar guandique the man charged in the death of the washington intern. chanda levy disappeared in may 2001. her remains found in rock creek park a year later. ingmar guandique, charged last march. at the time of his arrest, he was already in jail for attacking two female joggers in rock creek park. prosecutors working the case plan to present evidence of other crimes linked to guandique. p a former cellmate who claims he was raped by guandique. testimony about guandique's alleged lewd behavior in front of female prison guards. and a witness that says guandique talked aut abusing women. and how he would hog tie and rape them if they didn't want him. according to court documents, a mixture of dna was recovered from chandra levy's running

tights. but the dna is not a match for ingmar guandique. now already in this case more than 5,000 pages of information and evidence. there's a lot of legal work yet to be done. wendy? >> pat collins. thanks, pat. an arrest in the attack on a teenager in st. mary's county. sheriffs chaed butlering with secretary-degree assault. he was on work release when he allegedly hurled a chunk of concrete at a moving car. a 15-year-old girl riding in the back seat was hit on cavanaugh road in mechanicsville wednesday and had a fractured skull. the teen was taken to the washington hospital center where she is in stable condition. butler is being held at the deengs center on unrelated charges. investigators are still searching for answers after the devastating fire. gutted the home of peggy cooper

cafritz. the response will be examined and the water supply that was available. that home on chain bridge road went up in blaze wednesy. the priceless african-american art collection was destroyed. congress is moving quickly to keep afloat the government's cash for clunkers program. the billion dollar program that they viewed last week and already it is running out of cash. the program offered owners of old cars and trucks up to $4500 in rebates toward a new more fuel-fshtd vehicle. the offer was supposed to last until november but so many people are turning in their vehicles, the money is flying out thedoor. if the obama says he wants the program to continue. >> we are now working with congress on a bipartisan solution to ensure the program cacontinue for everyone out there that is still looking to make a trade. i'm encouraged republicans and democrats in the house are

working to pass legislation today that would use some recovery act funding to keep this program going. >> the house voted to add $2 billion more into the program but the senate won't be able to take up the measure until next week. local dealers are saying that they are seeing quite a few new customers hoping to take advantage of the program. julie carey is live in fairfax with more on that part of the story. >> reporter: this fairfax dealership, it meant a record-setting month and real concern yesterday when it looked like the program funds had suddenly been exhausted. but with today's news the program may be expanded they are ready to once again step on the gas. call it the clunker graveyard. the government's cash for clunkers program has been wildly successful for fairfax hyundai. these are the trade-ins. this is the bustling show room. filled with customers who want to make a deal before the money really runs out. >> a report i sawast night was that they ended it.

and so i thought well, you know, easy come, easy go. looked again this morning. and it looks like it was back on. >> reporter: brad is leaving his town and country van behind and taking home a new hyundai. the dealer's owner said cash for clunkers means instead of selling 200 cars expected this month, they will sell more than 300. >> we are having a record month right now. >> reporter: sam is thrilled to hear another $2 billion could be pumped into the program. >> forge ahead. be cautious and make sure it is qualified and all right. there's, no you know, situations that, you know, you have gray areas. but we will sell cars. >> reporter: in springfield, cash for clunkers has produced the best month in three years. 50 deals that our owner's desk waiting to be processed. jennings says he knew the first billion in government funds wouldn't last long. he had done the math. >> i thought that the money would run out before november 1. i had no idea that they would be talking about it running out after a week. i thought without it last a month, month and a half.

>> reporter: while the sudden funding uncertainty led some dealers in the metro area to suspend cash for clunkers, jennings will stay with the program as long as possible p. >> i hope is to get this stack of deals put into the system. okay. take it as it comes and it would be nice for business if it continues. >> reporter: this customer just got caught in limbo trying to buy early today before word came that congress might add money. >> i was hoping to get the money available but it is not. i hope the money will be extended -- the program will be extended and i will be able to get the new car. >> reporter: there seems to be one universal complaint from dealers and that is the processing these deals through the government website and that soured some dealers on the progm an caused them to question whether the government really knows how many deals are pending out there. reporting live from fairfax, julie carey. back to you. >> all right. julie, thank you. michael vick is closer to paying back some of his debt.

a virginia judge said vick's revised bankruptcy plan can be sent to his creditors for a vote. the bankruptcy court in newport news turned down vick's last plan. this time a former atlanta quarterback proposed selling off more assets and giving creditors a bigger cut of future earnings. the source of those earnings is not clear. one week after vick was conditionally reinstated into the nfl. the 29-year-old recently finished a 23-month prison sentence for animal abuse for running a dogfighting ring. day two of training camp and a big splash with the arrival of the redskins first round draft pick. lindsay czarniak joins us live from redskins park with more on the excitement out there. lindsay? >> reporter: big splash. that's what happened today at redskins park. the rains poured down so the second practice the redskins had today was canceled. like you said, the biggest news of the day was the signing of defensive lineman brian orakpo who signed a humongous five-year

$20 million deal. a signing bonus of $12.1 million. let me take you back to the field. brian orakpo, 13th overall pick by the redskins was a no show yesterday because of the contract hold-out and signed this morning. wasn't able to really practice with the team because of the finalizing details of the contract. he said that when he showed up the defensive coordinator greg joked with him about being blat. orakpo says he hates missing workouts and couldn't concentrate until it was official. last night he was celebrating his birthday with his fiancee in texas when he found out it was a done deal. >> got the call. i was celebrating in a sushi joint in a sushi restaurant, my favorite foods. i got the call. couldn't even enjoy it no more. already -- back in texas, yeah. downtown. seen jason and bates earlier. on the same day actually. those are the guys my agency, i knew things would start rolling. today you start seeing other

satellites. the shuttle program is winding down. therere just seven flights to remain as they finish building the space station. thnext launch is for the end of august. connecticut's senator christopher dodd has prostate cancer. dodd held a news conference in hartford this afternoon where he revealed the news. democratic senator says he was diagnosed about six weeks ago during an annual physical. he says the cancer is in its early stages and his prognosis is good. >> i feel fine. this is very common. if you have to have cancer i'm told by some doctors this is the slowest growing and best one to have and most manageable and say many people have been through it. >> dodd says the cancer diagnosis will not affect his plans to run for re-election next year. he's 65 years old. dodd was first elected to the senate in 1980 and is expected to face a very tough re-election fight. in today's news for your health, one of the manufacturers of the swine flu vaccine says they are on track to produce

more than they first expected. the maker of flu mist says they should have five times more of that vaccine than they had planned. flu mist is already used for the seasonal flu and administered as a spray up the nose. the government ordered about 13 million doses of the swine flu vaccine. the manufacturer says could it have as many as 200 million doses by next spring. scientist space the virus strain is used in the mist are different than those in the shots. strains for the mist are actually growing faster. two new studies are finding that the flu drug tamiflu could be causing some side effects in children. the researchers looked at school age kids in england finding that half of those taking the tamiflu experien experienced nightmares and nausea. it is an anti-didviral drug that can help shorten the symptoms of the flu. bob joins us and, wow, wild

weather. >> what an afternoon. fast-moving when -- we have seen storms come through here. just about as fast as they have come through. 40 le-mile-an-hour winds. we live on a rotating worth and. sometimes when the storms come through, they pick up and can spin up some small tornadoes and as we have seen, the result has been damage and a widespread damage to the north. up around carroll county and especially finksburg. and the folks up -- will be from the emergency managers and weather service. they will survey the damage and see where the trees and tree damage, straight line indication of rotary motion and this damage. winds, 50, 60, 70 miles an hour can do an awful lot of damage. and the thing that was in a way interesting on these storms is that -- they usually get big thunderstorms, towering high. these were just some low, very heavy rain showers because the air is so moist, so they swept through they swept through and the tops were only about 15 to 20,000

feet. that's the reason you folks saw the damage. probably didn't hear much in the way of thunder. it was obviously a lot of extensive damage. frederick county, tall way from spots eastward into especially the finksburg, carroll county area. look at the temperatures. 73 degrees here. 70s and 60s to our north. when these rains came through, and they were at least welcomed because we had been dry, boy, they did come through with those very brief heavy rains and the super-fast moving storms. now the dew point dropped a bit. there was a little weak weather front coming through but on top of that, very strong winds in the upper level. of course, a bit of spin all of which contributed to those severe thunderstorms and also possible tornado. there you can see originally the watch was until 9:00. here we are. four hours ahead of that 9:00. and it has already gone down because these storms raced through so fast. you folks into southern maryland and very tip around -- st.

mary's county, there's where there's lingering -- of the heavy showers. and really not much of anything in the way of lightning. eastern shore, there are still warnings out for folks in the eastern shore. and from here, all of this, will be continuing to race out towards the east and there might be a few lingering showers but that's really about it for your friday evening. look at clarkburg. measured wind speed of 60 miles an hour. st. michaels, maryland, eastern shore, over 40-mile-an-hour winds. baltimore itself over an inch of rain. and all of this, as we know, a brief time. overnight tonight we are going to continue to see that race off and back of it, some hot weather will be coming in tomorrow with the light westerly winds and then as we get on into later in the weekend, we could see another little weak weather front giving us another chance for some thundershowers. i think plain old thunderstorms for sunday afternoon. tomorrow over -- the next few hours, some lingering showers. certainly not any severe weather.

have -- a couple of whales to thank for saving her life. workers at an aquarium say the diver got a crippling cramp in her right leg 16 1/2 feet deep in icy water. they say two beluga whales who happened to be swimming in the aquarium with the diver sensed something was wrong and moved toward her. aquarium staff helped pull her out of the pool. >> when our broadcast continues, first lady michelle obama thanking military wives for the sacrifices they make for their country. cue the madness. we are there. hundreds of brides run for the dress of the dreams. >> we will continue to follow the weather and damage caused by it. these are live pictures from chopper 4.

first lady michelle obama is reminding americans to help military families left behind while their loved ones serve. >> offer to help with a car pool. simple things like bringing over dinner. >> mrs. obama spoke to about 500 people at the homecoming of two navy ships in norfolk. one of her roles as furl has been working to raise awareness of military families and their sacrifices. mrs. obama urged more americans to reach out to neighbors who have a loved one serving overseas. she suggests bringing them a meal as you heard there, also offering to car pool.

welcome back to our second half hour of "news4 at 5:00." i'm wendy rieger. >> jim handly. coming up in this half hour, a hacking threat to iphone. a daycare on alert after a bear shows up in the front yard. and the seinfeld cast coming back for a reunion. but first, our top story of a first of its kind case in prince george's county. a problem that plagues prosecutors all ov. witness intimidation. now there is a pair of indictments that came into a prince george's county murder case and it could be the beginning of a new day where intimidation or even death won't necessarily prevent a witness's words from making it to the courtroom. derrick ward is here to explain how this happened. >> prince george's county state's attorney says that this new law is probably one of the most useful to come out of annapolis in a while.

constitution's guarantees in a trial the accused gets to face the accuser. prosecutors want to use it in a local high-profile murder case. >> today we are announcing a grand jury here in prince george's county returned indictments against jammal lexus and rashad alexis. there's a 12-count indictment against jammal alexis. and a ten-count indictment. >> reporter: indictments don't usually warrant this kind of attention. this will be the first time the prosecutors are using a witness intimidation protection statute after a murder suspect had an alleged co-conspirator killed. >> the goal of the statute is to make sure witness intimidation and violence does not prevent juries and judges from neehaeydr >> repr:.arorte i>> reporter: it started with t murder of raymond brown. also known as scotty beat. he was shot dead near his largo home in 2006 after chasing and confront inging a car chief thae ad tow truck to steal his car. the police eventually arrested jammal alexis with that murder

and shortly after that arrest, police say alexis began plotting to kill witnesses against him in that case and in october of 2007, bobby emal was shot to death near this intersection in landover and he had already been charged in connection with the brown murder and he agreed to testify against alexis and given grand jury testimony before he was killed. brotheashad was charged auausy appear in court.the in the akehe defense's job easier if that accuser didn't testify. under the new law, enacted in 2005, if the defendant@fwerful . >> there ute. therere's some that we are definitely going to have and use in the near future.

>> reporter: a hearing on the state's attorney's motion is expected to be held next week. the brothers both face a number of charges. among them, obstruction of justice and first-degree murder. jim, back to you. >> derrick ward. thank you. higher taxes are coming to the district. the d.c. council proved a series of tax hikes today. and spending cuts to help close a $666 million budget deficit projected over the next three years. this move helped the council avoid dipping into the rainy day fund. under the plan the sales tax will go up to 6%, gas tax will rise 3.5 cents. and the cigarette tax will increase to $2.50 a pack. efforts are under way to keep a popular golf course in montgomery county open. sligo creek golf course is slated to close this october. the course is popular among seniors and beginning golfers who live outside the beltway. council members valerie ervin, asked the maryland national park

and planning commission to see if the golf course can remain open. earlier this month the planning board voted unanimously to close the course but the future of the property remains uncertain. it was a little bit scary. a courthouse in alexandria, someone spot ad copperhead snake outside of the courtroom on the bottom floor this morning. a juvenile holding cell was nearby. the snake moved quickly and it was seen disappearing into a boiler room and going down some utility pipes and deputy tried to chase it but couldn't get it. some people at the courthouse were clearly spooked by the snake. >> copperhead snake in the building. i was scared. >> some i can be. the poisonous ones i'm scared of. >> depends how much venom it has. >> how about the two-foot long variety heading your way? >> i can't deal with that. >> a courtroom was evacuated because of the snake's scare. none was hurt. the snake still at large.

>> that will get your attention. >> the python over in the other part of town. the snakes are having a high time in our area. >> wonder how they like this weather. where are they hiding? >> let's hope they are lying low after a wild day of weather. nice to see our sky watcher looking down the river, things really calming down. there's still showers and some lightning now for you folks in extreme southern maryland. let me zoom in to that area. no more warnings but still is a watch in calvert and charles and st. mary's county and, of course, none neck. you can see the real violent weather now over to the eastern shore and those storms around pinin point, solomons, those will continue to move out over the bay. look at how much the winds are up to 40 miles an hour. overnight tonight we are going to continue to see temperatures in the muggy 60s. after these showers, they really knocked the temperature down. tomorrow we will be seeing temperatures around 90 degrees for the next seven days and it is going to be summery as we head into august. as a matter of fact, humid right

a 6-year-old california boy is lucky to be live after strangers saved him from drowning. joshua is okay but a few days ago he was lifeless when a woman spotted him at the bottom of her pool at her san diego condo complex and jumped in and got him out of the water. a man nearby heard her screaming and called 911 and a third stranger gave joshua cpr. >> i jumped i with all my stuff on and he was heavy. i was pulling him. i'm barely five feet. >> still there and still not moving and still not responsive. to me it looked like he was turning color already. and then all of a sudden he just takes a deep breath. >> joshua snuck out of his home and decided go upon the an early morning swim by himself. doctors say he made a full recovery. experts say that more lives

routines for all of 2-year-old maya darden. >> go to mom. >> reporter: learning to master the flip and then swim to the edge. >> nice job. >> by continuously going from face down to face-up position and doing that over and over again, they get to the point they are like oh, my face is down, i need to roll over. >> reporter: in the past, the american academy of pediatrics warned kids under the age of 4 weren't physically ready for such swim lessons. then a recent study from the national institutes of health concluded instead that the lessons helped kids protect themselves. >> basically show the children what to do based on our touch, where we are touching certain muscles on their body. the same thing when you learn to tie your shoes. you keep learning and you keep tieing and keep tying and eventually a second nature to you. >> reporter: the kids practice not only in swimsuits but in shirts and shoes and ultimately in a winter coat.

they are having a bear of a problem in prince william county. there have been about a dozen bear sightings in the hey market and gainesville areas. one of the latest was at a daycareh keit garvin reports. >>e was lving the dumpster here. yeah. sizable bear. >> reporter: sunday evening in gainesville, it was than just the human sitting down for dinner. a local family spotted this black bear there in the middle of the screen foraging for food inside of a dumpster. no one else was around but there was a problem. the dumpster was in the parking lot of the daycare center. >> little too close for comfort with all the kids we have here oyp it is a facilityhat watches 200 children. when she saw the photo sunday she decided to keep the kids inside for the first part of monday morning. >> today, you know, it has been six days, we had soccer class. we usually do our class behind the fence in the wooded area over there. we didn't do that. we did it up here. just because. why take the chance with all those kids?
