course in ijamsville. that's near frederick, maryland. >> some large trees fell on two cars there. people in those cars refused medical treatment. they were not seriously a injur. 66 wi-as shut down a short tiaumeec b oreecse t ae that fel in the middle of the adro. t the tree has since been removed and traffic is moving again. for more let's head up to bob in the storm center. hey, bob. >> wendy and jim, it has been a wild afternoon. yesterday we talked about the risk of severe thunderstorms and boy, did they fire up. this is probably the worst of the damage which was in carroll county, finksburg. not to diminish any of the damage where you folks were even in montgomery county and as we can see, we will see later around washington, but this was the number of homes that were -- suffered significant structural damage. there was a tornado warning at the time these storms came through. that tornado warning went into effect at 2:20 and now you can see the straight-lined damage and folks will be up there tomorrow to see if there was rotary damage.

it certainly looks like winds well over 100 miles an hour do that and potentially tornado. you can see what's left of it now. finally moving out of extreme southern maryland. where we are automatic under the watches. it has been a busy afternoon. veronica has been on too much it. all afternoon and also has a lot more on the damage and there was some widespread damage just to the north of washington. >> exactly. and those are the areas that we are talking about up and around finksburg. not just carroll county but frederick county for western howard county and for areas of montgomery, some damage. north of us, the blue dots you see there. again, between 2:00 and 4:00. meanwhile, let me show you a list of what some of those winds got up to this afternoon. reported up to 74 miles per hour. just one mile northeast of bellenger creek and new market, too. montgomery county, winds clocked at 60 miles per hour. one little area up there. reporting some structural damage as well. and for loudoun county, the one

area reporting some hail around lucketts and finksburg where many of the trees were down. >> right around washington, we had seen also, as you showed some damage around connecticut. let me show you where that area of storminess now is. one feature was how rapidly this line was coming through. it was moving at 40 to 50 miles an hour. when it came through with the very heavy rain, the tropical rain, the result, was those also straight-lined winds and here to give you an idea some of the airport delays. obviously, anybody that's aveling, philadelphia, new york city, because of the continued storminess up there, it is going to be hitting those storms and obviously on a friday, big delays also. but here's the good news again. i will zoom down to extreme southern tip of st. mary's county. that's the end of it. and from here on in, we will have a rather quiet evening. the last of the storms now moving out towards the eastern shore. sunshine and heat will be back. i will tell you about that and

also show you some more areas locally that did have damage also. but i don't anticipate tomorrow we will see anything like the wild weather we had for this afternoon. back to you. >> thank you, bob. for more on the storm damage of our area experienced this afternoon we want to go to craig melvin. >> craig is on the phone in ijamsville, maryland. >> reporter: just got -- standing three, four feet away from a massive tree uprooted here. across the street is another massive tree that's also been uprooted. that tree is on top of a two-story house. a number of folks already have taken out the chain saws and in the process of cutting the limbs. cut some of the limbs out of the roadway. a number of power lines also. i want to bring in mike the fire marshal. he is the battalion chief in frederick county. tell me about what you have seen so far, chief. >> the -- we have a lot of trees down across the roadway, power lines are down.

we had some trees on houses. we also had people -- as a result of the storm, came through here. >> reporter: any injuries so far? >> no injuries at this time that we are aware of. >> reporter: power outages at this point? >> unaware of what area the power outage is encompassing. allegany is working -- like i said, lines that are down, trees on lines and several roads closed in the area. >> reporter: we have only been here for five, ten minutes. we have just in five, ten minutes dozens of trees, roadways, and a few on top of homes at this point. and at this point do we have any idea how many homes have trees on top of them or how many structures have been damaged? >> firefighters as well as emergency management folks out in the neighborhood doing assessment as well as aerial. >> reporter: the question to the national weather service, but you have seen a number of tornadoes in your day. based on what you have seen so far to this point does it look

cash for clunkers has blown through its billion dollar budget in less than a week and now washington is scrambling to keep it funded. >> the bill is passed -- >> reporter: before going on its august break, the house voted to pump in another $2 billion in stimulus money while several republicans supported the bill, others called it another expensive bailout for the auto industry. >> maybe we should have a cash for cluckers program and pay people to eat chicken. >> we decided to give out free money and now we are surprised when people love it and take advantage of the program. >> reporter: some are hoping congress can keep cash for clunkers on track. buyers get their deal up front and have nothing to worry about but the dealers might not be as fortunate if cash for clunkers were to stall. on capitol hill, brian mooar, news4. car dealers here in our area have been inundated with

space shuttle "endeavour" returned to earth today. the seven astronauts aboard successfully finished up a job that boosted the size and power of the international space station. kristen dahlgren is at the kennedy space center with our report. >> reporter: after 16 days, 6.5 million miles, "endeavour" glided to a stop on the florida runway. the astronauts beaming as they stepped back on solid ground. >> what a fantastic mission. we are thrilled to be a part of a team that is able to

accomplish missions like this. >> reporter: it was an end to a mission that was full of new beginnings. >> what an amazing team of accomplishment this was. a truly phenomenal mission. >> it was first time 13 people had ever lived together on the international space station. and over five space walks astronauts attached the last piece of the billion dollar japanese lab. a front porch for space experiments. the experiment that has a lot of people talk sing one by a japanese astronaut who spent the last 4 1/2 months on the international space station. he wore the same underwear for the last month. testing new high-tech odor-free material. >> i wore them for a month. my members never complained for a month. i think the experiment went fine. >> reporte as "endeavo" sailed home it was mission accomplished in more ways than one. the space station left better equipped than ever and another shuttle safely home at the aging spacecraft near the planned

retirement in 2010. kennedy space center, kristen dahlgren, news4. >>. first lady michelle obama traveling to norfolk, virginia, today to meet with military troops and their families and took part in a homecoming ceremony at the navy base there in norfolk welcoming sailors that completed tours in afghanistan and iraq. mrs. obama thanked them for their service and urged americans to reach out and help those serving their country. especially the spouses and children they leave behind. >> let us make a pledge here today to honor their service by doing more to serve them in our own community. let's do simple things like offer to help with a car pool. simple things like bringing over dinner. >> mrs. obama also encouraged businesses to hire military

spouses and free services. the navy says it conducted another test of the sea base near the hawaiian islands yesterday. the u.s.s. hopper was able to shoot down a short-range dummy missile fired from a nearby testing facility. this intercept occurred about 100 miles above the pacific ocean. u.s. security officials confirmed three americans have been held by the iranians. the state department says the americans were reportedly in northern iraq near the iran border. kurdish official space the americans were arrested when they went in a iran -- into iranian territory without permission. one security official says the missing americans were tourists on an outing. we will have more on this story when the news becomes available. also in iraq, six bombs went off within minutes of each other near shiite mosques across baghdad today. at least 26 people were killed

and 67 others were injured. those attacks targeted worshipers leaving friday prayers. the bombings shattered a period of relative calm in the iraqi capital. those attacks also underscored concerns about the abilities of iraqi security forces to maintain security gains now that u.s. troops have withdrawn from major urban areas of iraq. iranian president, ahmadinejad, was a bit on the defensive today. in a televised speech, he dismissed his critics' claims that his relationship with iran's supreme leader soured. ahmadinejad said there's no rift nora feud. he said his relationship with the supreme leader is like that of pear and son. ahmadinejad accused his rivals of trying to drive a wedge between the two of them. critics of ahmadinejad, who begins his second term next week, said the legitimacy of his government will be in doubt if he does not follow the supreme

leader. a second dumping site has been fond at chicago's burr oaks cemetery where authorities are looking for evidence in a grave selling scream. a number of discarded bones were discovered in the same area where hundreds of remains were found earlier this month. investigators say the bones were in a mound of dirt and say it looks as if someone tried to hide them. about a dozen empty burial vaults were also found. authorities are investigating an alleged moneymaking skaem that involved digging up bodies and then reselling the used plot. four cemetery workers have been aarged. rea binnitot, a bear gi vniira preschool. we will tell you about that. pope benedict xvi signed a record deal. bob has our forecast coming up. there's something big happening at pizza hut.

preparations are under way important the paul mccartney concert tomorrow night at fedex fie field. as you can see, crews are lining up chairs, working on the big stage out there. there is another touch. the local deejay group fever corporation will perform as mccartney's opening act. tomorrow night's show kicks off at 7:00. the weather. >> much better than this afternoon. >> no crazy -- >> what's interest sing we had severe thunderstorms and possible tornado without real thunderstorms. there was very little lightning because the storms usually we get 40,000, 50,000.

these were about 15,000 feet but moving at 40 miles an hour with those torrential rains coming in. so that was like having a wall of water bang into you at 50 miles an hour. then some spin. wild afternoon. outside in -- >> yeah. >> we can see the damage. as a matter of fact, right around washington, this is around connecticut avenue, and some spots with the strong winds. brought down some trees. and some power outages. and you can get an idea of how strong those winds were and when those torrential rains came in, too, it was certainly dangerous going. there was our sky watcher in time lapse. ing see those showers come through and you can also get an idea of all of that low-level turbulce and spin in the atmosphere that contributed to the damage. outside our high temperature here today, we made it up to 90 degrees. with sopping wet air, that was the fuel, even for those storms that only went up, only, say only about three miles.

our rainfall here in washington for the entire month, only a bit over an inch of rain now. many of you folks to the north -- i had that in a few minutes. 75 degrees now. we have a northwesterly wind. knocked the humid down a bit. 66. look at the temperatures around the east. still in the 80s to 70s. but no sign of those 90s because of this thing coming through. t humidity on the east side. weak weather front and on top that of that, the spin in the atmosphere which combined to produce fast-moving storms. winds up above us, 40, 50 miles an hour and so that got translated by the heavy rains and right down to the surface and the result were those strong storms. now the last of the showers still for you folks into lusby, southern parts of maryland, parts of the -- tide water area, there's still the watch out but it is over the eastern shore and even there i think that's going down in a few minutes. no severe thunderstorm watch around us. in a way can integrate all of

the rain. raindrops, one of the great powers of doppler radar, where those greens and yellows are. those are the areas that had the heaviest rain. look around boons borrow and frederick and on into pittsburgh, where the damage was. that was also associated with the heaviest rains were. so again, we could see how much energy, if you will, momentum, twransferred to the ground with the very, very fast-moving storms, three-quarters of an inch of rain around the area of silver spring. not only we have been getting the damage but look at the wind damage reports now. all the way from new england south and into the carolinas and even into mississippi. and so that gives you an idea of the extent of the line that's come through. baltimore over an inch of rain. just a few minutes. frederick, maryland, also folks up there and an inch and a half of rain. ocean city had rain, too. the temperatures are 81 degrees. i know after this, you are heading out to the beaches, maybe for next week, vacation. concerned a little bit about the

tropics and still nothing going on in the tropics. no sign that ear here we are heading into august of the first tropical storm still forming of the season. overnight tonight, there goes the showers. and in back of it, tomorrow, with west to northwesterly winds, it will be hot and a little bit maybe less humid. then we have another little ripple coming through with that heat that might kick off some afternoon thunderstorms and especially on sunday. so for the remainder of the evening, showers there and just about ov except for you folks extreme southern maryland. and temperatures about where they are now. 70 to 75 degrees. might see them rise a little bit with a little bit of this late afternoon sunshine coming back. skies will clear tomorrow. it will be a quiet morning. but a bit on the warm, humid side. temperatures tomorrow morning near 70 degrees. nice day tomorrow. if you are heading out to western maryland and garrett county, mountains of west virginia, can't rule out a thundershower. better chance of seeing one around us here on sunday. so keep a weather eye, weather ear for that. if you are going boating or sailing or in the pool,

ingmar guandique is the man

charged with killing chandra levy. >> more than 5,000 pages of evidence to guandique's attorneys. the evidence reveals new information. pat collins has our report. >> reporter: yet another twist to the high profile murder case. in superior court, defense attorneys representing the man charged in the murder of chandra ten other ey know ofener o t people who are possible suspects. those defense attorneys represent ingmar guandique, the man charged in the death of the washington intern. chandra levy disappeared in may 2001. her remains found in rock creek park a year later. ingmar guandique charged last march. at the time of his arrest, he was already in jail for attacking two female joggers in rock creek park. prosecutors working the case plan to present evidence of other crimes linked to guandique. a former clmateen that claims he

was raped by eguandique. testimony about guandique's alleged lewd behavior in front of femalen psori guards. d a witness that says so guandique talked about abusing women. and how he would hog tie and rape them if they didn't want him. according to court documents, a mixture of dna was recovered from chandra levy's running tights. but that dna is not a match for ingmar guandique. the trial for guandique is scheduled to begin early next year but there's likely to be a lot of legal battles before that gets under way. i'm pat collins, news4 washington. connecticut senator christopher dodd announced today he has prostate cancer. during a news conference in his hartford office the 65-year-old democrat said the cancer was found six weeks ago and in its early stages and scheduled to have surgery next month during the summer recess. dodd says the prognosis is good.

>> i feel fine. i say this is very common. you have to have cancer. i'm told by some doctors this is the slowest growing, the best one to have. >> senator dodd is up for re-election next year and says this illness will not affect those plans. president obama's health care reform initiative took another step towards passage today. on capitol hill, house democrats patched up more differences between them and the key committee quickly began voting. steve handelsman has our report. >> reporter: it is a major advance for president obama's prom toys sign a plan with universal health coverage and lower costs this year. >> so the clerk will call the role. >> reporter: key house committee began voting, approving a compromise by conservatives and liberal democrats. th $1.5 trillion plan will cover almost all americans by 2013. paid for by hiking taxes on the wealthy now. and by cutting billions in

health care costs. in part by forcing drug companies to sell medicine more cheaply. the so-called public option, government insurance, and part of the plan. and america's 40 plus pl unshirned would also be able to choose from private plans in a co-op pool both with no ban on pre-existing conditions and no high co-pays, no age december cripple nation but relatively low rates. republicans tried to kill government insurance. >> if we can get the same bang for the buck, spend $2 billion a year instead of $1 billion a year. >> reporter: democrats said we can't and now unified voted yes on the public opti. >> and what it is is a way to drive competition, get prices down, and quality up and that's what we are all about. >> reporter: speaker pelosi celebrated. >> closer to health care reform than we have ever been in history. >> reporter: many more votes lie ahead. before president obama can sign a final bill.

city water officials have promised a thorough investigation into the fire that gutted the home of former d.c. school board president peggy cooper cafritz. video shot this morning shows just how devastating that fire was. that home on chain bridge road in northwest d.c. went up in flames on wednesday night. firefighters say one reason it got so out of control was because water pressure in the neighborhood was so low. today the water and sewer authorities said it is working with the fire department to determine what happened that night and what steps need to be taken to make sure all the hydrants in the city are working properly. in alexandria, another victory for councilwoman hughes. she was sworn in on july 1st but her term got off to a rocky start after a formal complaint was challenging her residency. she could have lost her seat. the commonwealth's attorney ruled she was indeed a resident

when she filed to run for city council. the complaint was dismissed. unsettling sight in alexandria this morning. the judge had to move proceedings because there was a snake in the courthouse. kimberly suiters has our report. >> reporter: the snake was seen slithering outside of a courtroom in a hallway near a juvenile holding area. and in a utility closet. >> copper snake in the building. i was scared. >> reporter: miller came to the courthouse and almost ran out screaming. you saw that thing slithering towards you. >> i would have run. i don't care what the police said. >> reporter: big brother didn't even know about it but he wasn't scared. sort of. >> i'm not scared but some i can be. it is the poisonous ones i might be scared of. it depends how much venom it has. >> reporter: how about the two-foot long variety heading your way? >> i can't deal with that. i have to run or hide somewhere or get on top of something or a tree or anything to get ay

in gainesville. it was digging through the tra containers looking forfo tod. the center cares for 0 children after seeing the picture the director decided to keep the children indoors on monday as a precaution. >> even today, you ow, it has been six days, soccer class, we usually do our class behind the fence in a wooded area. we deposit that. we did it up here. just becae. why take the chance with all those kids? >> virginia wildlife wroeshs called in. so far the bear is still on the loose. for the second straight year, the district is hosting a special soccer competition. street soccer is the name of the game at the stadium. 150 homeless players from 16 cities will compete here to raise funds and aweness. some players say the competition helps keep their mind off of it. >> i kept optimistic due to

good evening. bob ryan, storm center 4. after wild day of storms, the last of the rain showers now and they had been fast moving and still in st. mary's county. sky watcher looking a little bit better than it did earlier. heading out to the beaches and doing some sailing, good sailing weather tomorrow. there will be west-northwest, eventually southwest wind. and excellent visibility out of the mountains, there might be a scattered afternoon thunderstorm. and as there will be on sunday afternoon if you are heading out for the beaches and the clouds, they are moving out. i have a new interesting thing that was published this week in science on the potential impact of clouds, low clou, and the loss of low clouds on global warming. come into our homepage, nbcwashington.com. and click on weather stories and there is the latest that i have written on the impact and what's called the positive feedback perhaps of decreasing low clouds

sushi restaurant eating dinner with his fiancee when he got the call and he was shocked they could get it done so fast. here he is. 13th overallic and no-show yesterday because he was trying to get some more money. he did that signing this morning. he was not really able to practice fully with the team because the finalizing details on the contract. he said the defensive coordinator joked with him because yesterday he was very vocal saying orakpo was missing valuable time. orakpo talked about what that conversation was like with his defensive coordinator today. >> he was like you need to be here. he was like -- i understand the problems -- the whole contract issue and stuff like that. but you know, he -- he and the rest of the coaches really want to get this train rolling and want all the pieces that were -- added this year to be together and kind of every every -- as mh together as possible. so i mean, i understood where he was coming from. like i said, it is the business side of it and we finally took care of it. i'm here.

it. preseason and 16 games and the playoffs. it will be a long year for him. >> something tells me andre carter has a couple of ideas up his sleeve. moving now from defense to offense. one of the biggest battles going on at camp this season is going to be for right tackle. stephon, the starter of the position. he will be battling out with mike williams and mike williams is the guy that's become famous because he's the player trying to make this team who lost more than 100 pounds. he's really trying to make an impression. both of these guys said beyond their personal performance, everybody on the offensive line is really committed to working to the really being a lot more fit and i tell you what, when you watch this team out there on the field, they do look very different as a unit. let me take you back. the offensive line, you know, they might look a tad bit trimmer is what you would be safe to say this year. they are leaner and that's by design. former maryland terps earned the starting spot last season. he said more power to mike williams or anybody that could unseed him.

meanwhile, derrick dockery is a former redskins who is coming back to this team at the guard position. dockery is one of the group that decided to crank up their off-season workouts and went to arizona for a little bit of bonding and to really get in the best shape possible. >> it was a collective thing we did as a group. okay. you know, me and my training last year, chris had seen me when i came back. when he saw me on film sometime. that was really good. stephon, just -- hey, let's go out and try to get together. you know. and kind of a bonding experience as well. you know. i thought we did a good job. >> every sense of the imagination, the heart and soul of the team. we play well the team plays well. we stay healthy, we will do all right and a chance out there. we had put a lot of work on the offseason to make sure we come out and do well this year. a bad taste in our mouth last year and want to do well. >> you feel like you were helping them start this line and this -- because of motivation that -- >> i feel so. i feel like we all have a lot to

field. first baseman nick johnson has been with this organization since 2004 and he was traded to the florida marlins for minor league pitcher and former first round pick aaron thompson. the 30-year-old johnson batted 295 this season with six homers and 44 rbis and with the nats. nats also shipped out this guy, left-handed reliever to the colorado rockies. in return, the nationals get two pitching prospects. tonight this team begins a four-game series in pittsburgh against the pirates. moving now to golf. the buick open. tiger woods almost didn't have it in him but as he always does, he came back with an incredible round. let me take you back out to the golf course. tiger woods began this afternoon on the back nine. here he is on 11. his tee shot from 180 yards away. and when you say this is good, this is a good one. this shot lands on the green and stop ad few feet from the hole. tiger would birdin of eight birdies in the round for tiger woods. on 12, his second shot from just
