and fred funk. >> thank you, mark. fred, really key second shot at the 16th. i think the 17th may have been bigger. can you talk us through that? >> which one? >> well, okay, the second -- >> 17, i got in a bad spot. there's not many good spots there. we were debating whether to play it safe for the 4, but if i chipped it down to where greg is, it's not an easy two-putt. decided to go for it. i did a really good chip. and actually thought i lost it probably a little left. it hung on there. that's just a great feeling when you do a save like that. >> you had a tough finish at this championship a year ago. a little hardbreak last week. where's your gut going at it tomorrow? >> ready go. fired up. i'm playing really good. i'm having fun out there. i'm just trying to go at everything. and not be defensive. and, you know, i just want to play well. and gout there and just play
6:01 pm
to my ability. and if i do that and have fun, good things will happen. i can live with myself. >> you talk about not being defensive. where on this golf course do you think you need to be particularly aggressive? >> well, you've got to pick and choose. but the biggest thing for me is to try to keep it on play off the fairway and stay out of the defensive mode. i've been driving the ball really good all week. today, i didn't drive it as good as i had been all week. i got away with it early on the front nine. in the back nine, i started hitting it harder. i got a couple of good breaks. i got a divot on 10, made bogey there. i got a divot on 15. i kind of played the divot instead of playing the -- i blade the aggressive line and paid for that one. i hit a good draw on 14. i didn't think that was the lie, i just drew a horrible lie there. i play good. i'm real pleased. >> thanks for your time. let's go to jennifer mills.
6:02 pm
>> thank you, dottie. >> fred, you drove the ball beautifully today. to play those last four holes 1 under par is a good grouping. >> we kind of enjoy each other's company. in a lot of ways, not hitting the ball the same distance. but when you're in with somebody, the day goes a lot quicker, a lot smoother. yes, i did drive the ball well. you know, just that one slipup on 16 which i still feel i carried it. was trying to carry it, but i guess i'm not as young as i used to be. >> you still hit it a long way. let's head out to 18. thank you, greg. >> all right, tim jackson's third shot. in from the left at the par 4. >> this is going to be pretty good. going to get it down the slope. easy. nicely done. >> it's been an impressive performance by the overnight leader. two-time u.s. midamateur champ.
6:03 pm
there he is. he's got three players ahead of him in this championship right now. funk, norman and sindelar. he is 10 under par at crooked stick. neither player in this final pair, to, has made a birdie on the back nine. joey sindelar, you'll remember, his second shot went just through his 18th green. did not get up against the primary rough, gary. so he should have a shot. >> yeah, remember how he started the round. he putted out of the intermediate rough. and to me, joey admits it, here's another look at that first le, this, to me, indicates -- >> you don't like the chip? >> exactly. and joey freely admits that. that's why we see him using the putter as often as he does in this situation.
6:04 pm
>> nicely done by joey sindelar. so he will get in at minus 12, after 54 holes of this championship. tim jackson will need t hole this put to go out again in a pair with joey tomorrow. >> and i think, too, mark, playing with joey sindelar had to be a huge advantage for tim jackson. i mean, joey sindelar probably the nicest guy, easiest going guy you could ever ask to be paired in a twosome. i'm sure he encouraged minimum along the way, included him in the conversation. and that's not necessarily the case with another players, roger. >> absolutely. so i would agree with that assessment totally. i'm not so sure that this pairing, if it happens again tomorrow, wouldn't be beneficial to both the players. not just jackson. >> actually, the final two pairings would be the same.
6:05 pm
fred funk and greg norman, jackson and sindelar, if he makes this. for a 4, to stay at minus 10. >> he's got it. >> and it's a round he will remember. the score is 73. but he held up extremely well. joey sindel taps in for his par aso and a round of70. erantho recthd-scoring day today. r 25 rounds under par today. in this third round. there's a look at the leaderboard, fred funk has a one-stroke lead over norman and sindelar. a lot of big names, though, still down there ewith a chance to win.
