from the leading news station. this is "news 4 midday." good morning. we begin this midday with breaking news. the two american journalists arrested, convicted and sentenced to a labor camp in north korea are finally back on u.s. soil. they arrived in california just about two hours ago after a harrowing journey. brooke hart with the late-breaking details now. >> reporter: journalists laura ling and euna lee touched down on u.s. soil and to the family reunion of their lives. >> we could feel your love all the way in north korea. it is what kept us going in the darkest of hours. it is what sustained our faith that we would come home. >> reporter: their personal relief was a political feat. former president bill clinton's intervention came at the request of the women's top boss at current tv, al gore. >> we want to thank president bill clinton for undertaking

have have thought something like that would happen. >> four people are dead including the gunman and nine others were wounded. we're learning new details this morning about what happeneded in the health club and the gunman and his possiblemotive. brian moore has the latest on the developing story. brian. >> reporter: hi, keith. to walk by this gym right now, you wouldn't notice much evidence of all the carnage and chaos here last night except for a sign on the door talking about the thoughts and prayers of this company going out to the families of the victims and a bunch of flowers laid there just a few moments ago by a couple coming by to pay their respects. today officials here in bridgeville, pennsylvania will hold a news conference to give us more information about what happened. a short time ago the coroner released the names of the three women who were killed here last night. there are nine others in hospitals recovering from injuries ranging from serious to critical. but authorities are focusing

right w on the gunman who took his life here during this rampage last night. 48-year-old george sodini apparently had a history in a blog of writing about his troubles with life and relationships. apparently he says in this blog that he tried to pull off something like this back in january. he says in this blog that he bought loaded guns, everything, but he says in this blog that he chickened out. authorities are really looking into this man's past. they say it's too early to really speak about a motive, but we are hearing that there was a note and we hope later today at this news conference to find out a little bit more about what basically led to this tragedy near bridgeville, pennsylvania. >> brian moore live in brijville. thank you. there were many inside the health club when the gunman opened fire. one was richard walker who was playing a pickup basketball games with friends when it all happened. >> i heard two gunshots, and two

an to limit the spread of seally transmitted diseases among young people in our area. the plan is to test students in every d.c. high school. megan mcgrath is live with details and reaction. megan. >> reporter: keith, this started as a pilot program in eight d.c. public schools. the kids were tested for gonorrhea and cla mid ya. the results were surprising, so surprising school and health officials have decided to expand the testing program to all high schools in the district of columbia. teenagers are used to taking tests. it's part of going to school. but in the district of columbia, there's a new test this year. one that requires lab work. d.c. public schools will offer tests for sexually transmitted diseases at all high schools beginning this fall.he taking the test is vo luntary, and will not require parental t.en the move comes after a pilott. program in eight d.c. schlsil found that between 12% and %14

you. breaking news. chopper 4 is live over the scene of a school bus accident in ñr vienna, virginia. around 10:30 this morning a fairfax county school bus collided with another vehicle. it happened around maple avenue west and courthouse road. there were kids on the bus whether it crashed, but the injuries are minor. we'll keep you updated on this breaking news as the details become available. police have not released the iflt identity of a man run over on i-235 in landover. it happened around 9:00 tonight. a pedestrian was trying to cross the northbound lanes. that's when a car slammed into him and killed the man. police say the driver stayed at the ennee a rough road -- rough on the roadways so far this morning. we'll check in with jerry edwards with an update. >> good morning to you. good morning, everyone. kind of a tough commute, and it didn't rain or anything. it was just one of those days. now it's time for roadwork, and

washington has one of the highest rates of kidney failure in the nation. to avoid a life on dialysis, most patients need a transplant. there's already a national shortage for kidneys available and it's tougher for african-americans to find matches. two local hospitals are helping us rethink the impossible. we have more. >> reporter: it's an emotional reunion for 61-year-old elizabeth garner. she's meeting jordan grow for the first time. >> x marks the spot. >> reporter: he's the man that gave her his kidney. >> this man is an angel, my angel. >> reporter: her husband is meeting addition that ping kert, she has his kidney. it started two weeks ago when he got up at 5:30 to the morning to donate to someone he's never even met. >> you are a hero, my man. this is beautiful.

>> reporter: he did it for his wife elizabeth. she's in kidney failure living on dialysis. >> i do not want to live like this. i want to die. >> reporter: their reunion is the result of a 14-person kidney swap between patients at georgetown university hospital and washington hospital center. he participated in hopes that someone else in the group would be a match for elizabeth and in return one of the others could take larry's kidney. the lucky recipient much his kidney, her father gave her one of his 14 years ago but it's failing. >> it's very draining. it's no kind of life that i wish on anyone. >> reporter: the rest of the group, craig, dominick, terry, laurie, brian, jacqueline, sean and elaine, a total of 14 surgeries over four days, but what mes this kidney swap unprecedented, all of the recipients are african-american. the doctor is a director of kidney transplants at georgetown.

>> we have an epidemic of kidney disease in thiscountry, especially in the big urban centers. >> reporter: skyrocketing rates of diabetes and high blood pressure are to blame. nationwide 80,000 people are waiting for a kidney. 32% are black, and there aren't enough donors. that's because african-americans are more lickkely to build up antibodies that cause rejection. now doctors use a new process to filterhose antibodies from blood plaza making transplant an option. >> we think we could perform thousands more trandz plants in this country. >> reporter: in fact, all seven patients who received a kidney in the swap used this new procedure. for these 14 people it was the ultimate gift exchange. >> you're helping to save many lives. >> here in d.c. there are about 6,000 people on dialysis and most are african-americans. doctors only perform 250

transplants each yore. the mops and buckets are out in parts of midwest this morning. kentucky and indiana are reeling from a round of strong srms and flash flooding. more than four inches of rain fell in louisville in a few hours yesterday. the storms prompted authorities to urnlg people to stay home. even the famed churchill downs racetrack was underwater. i understand we'll see some remnants from that storm. >> nothing like that. but the clouds we had from yesterday afternoon overnight and now this morning came from those strong storms. we see some of the effects here but only in the form of mehrough tfu come through thankfully right now. that cold front that triggered the strong storms in indiana and kentucky yesterday will sweep through here this afternoon but it's weaker. here's the sky this morning. over the last couple of hours watching those clouds coming in from virginia. you can see the cloud shadows passing over the neighborhoods. those clouds continue to move in out of the southwest and sweep over us. will be with us from time to time throughout the afternoon.

there's a live picture now from the sky watcher camera looking in the same direction. as we look downtown right now in the potomac river there's a little wind on the potomac, not much. hardly ruffling that sail. that sailboat not moving very fast. that's a picture of a sailboat on the potomac river. right now at reagan international it's at 83 degrees. a month from now the average high is 83, where we are right now. the average low is 65. so we're now at this time of year beginning to see the average downturn in our temperatures. we're looking at radar now where you see the area of blue on the screen here just east of harrisonburg. there's an area of rain moving along interstate 64 near charlottesville. and we'll stay dry here for the next couple of hours around washington as well, where the temperatures are in the low 80s in fairfax and prince georges and montgomery counties. a little more humid in the

southern part of the region here, the dew point at pax river. our dew point is a comfortably dry 62 in washington. dew points are in the low 60s. eastern shore, though, is quite steamy and it's a steamy day at the beach. it's beautiful from the cape down to virginia beach and the outer banks. a beautiful beach day there in the mid-80s. it is certainly human there. out of the mountains it's in the 70s now with lower humidity there. we see a few sprinkles showing up here and the humidity held at bay over the last few hours will begin to sweep in and increase our chances for showers or thundershowers. a wider view showing that front from southern ontario all the way down along the ohio valley into kentucky is beginning to drift to the east. out ahead of that we have the humidity and there's a weak area of low pressure along this front that may ride along it and perhaps increase our chance for some showers later on tonight

and into tomorrow morning. so going forward over the next 36 hours where you see the blue, that's a line of showers and potential thunder that may come in late this afternoon and in the early evening and sooner into the afternoon to our west. then overnight tonight, maybe a lingering shower as we get into tomorrow morning and during the day on thursday we'll see perhaps a passing shower or thundershower south and east of us around the bay and around the beaches this afternoon. for the most part we should stay dry tomorrow with lower humidity moving in. here's how we look for the afternoon. we have the temperatures climbing to around 90 degrees and the humidity should come back a little bit. it won't be oppressive. there's a likelihood of passing afternoon and evening thundershowers. don't anticipate any severe storms. just straight down moderate to heavy rain briefly as those pass by. we're in the 70s this horng and may interrupt the baseball game tonight. by dawn tomorrow should be near er howumidity on

terrier wishbone for his evening stroll. hall's husband asked her to carry the stick for protection after a 60-year-old neighbor walking her dog on sunday afternoon was mauled by an unleashed rottweiler. it has a black and tan coat similar to this one seen on a flyer distributed by authorities. >> hopefully it's a stray dog that wandered into this development. i would hate to think somebody in this community would have an animal that would attack someone walking. >> reporter: they say the victim in sunday's attack was bitten numerous times and broken a shinbone to protectñi her dog. the dog was so severely injured it had to be euthanized. they're going door to door in some cases looking for information about the rottweiler. neighbors are very concerned. >> i heard about it. of course, i didn't know who it was. i thought about all these ladies

i run into walking every day, and they do walk their dogs. >> reporter: authorities urge anyone who sees the dog not to approach it but to call 911 right away. jackie benson, news 4. a scam at a local funeral home has many people who already paid for services wondering if they're out of luck. police say as many as 60 customers prepaid for funeral ar wranges bith bailey funeral service. on july 23rd they executed a search warrant at the funeral home and the owner was arrested. he was charged with obtaining money by false pretenses. he denied those charges when approached by news 4. >> it's never been my intention to defraud anyone. >> at this point have 22 confirmed victims representing over $90,000 where their money was not going into an escrow account as it legally required. >> bailey funeral services has been a fixture in the fredericksburg community for 50 years. ambrose bailey is a former

councilman and prominent businessman in the area. people may soon be prohibited from smoking near play grounds in the city of rockville. there's a proposal to ban smoking. the proposal came from complaints from care takers of children who were using the play grounds. they have decided to delay voting on the pro to feel to allow time for a pub comment session. that session will take place on monday, september 14th. it's now illegal to buy or sell an herb called salvia in ocean city. they approved ordinance on moay that bans the sale and possession of the herb. it has hallucinogenic property sks can cause psychedelic trips. some say the usage has led to violent outbursts along the boardwalk. new details in a vandalism case in fredericks county. police tell news 4 they have just arrested three teens who

i'm kind of curious to see if there are any offenders nearby. >> reporter: the app uses iphones's built in gps to list sex offenders in any address. once you type in an address, a map of the area pops up to show where sex offders live. it provides a picture if available and other indication including date of birth and crime committed. it's been out for two months and has consistently landed in the top ten sellers. >> i think it would be an excellent thing to use if you had young children. i have grandchildren, so i probably would use it when they come to visit from either colorado or wisconsi >> i would use that. i mean, i think it's a good thing to have on your iphone. i mean, especially if you don't know -- if you're not aware of what's around you. >> reporter: the information is pulled from each state's database, and that information is free to the public online, but the maker of the app thin air wireless says it's all about convenience. >> i have dozens of apps on my

had been forecasted but considerably less than losses seen in recent months. the u.s. services economy contracted, so you know, it's sort of a mixed message there. not always the greatest thing to see partially why stocks are lower right now. we've been talking a lot about this cash for clunkers program and how much it's helped the automakers, but ford's north american sales chief says he doesn't expect sales to fall off sharply once the program ends, even if ford has benefitted the most of all, posting it's first monthly sales gain in two kweerz years. gm's chairman is laying down the lay. he says the automaker must not lose the number one spot in u.s. sales. gm controls 19% of the u.s. market ahead of toyota. fritz henderson has the board's support, but he has to show those results. sony is unveiling two new e-book readers today. it has a five-inch screen and costs $100 less than the kendall

a florida schoolteacher has been suspended from a classroom after he was caught on a cell phone video allegedly choking a student. this video made national headlines last month. it shows him holding down a student in his classroom after a three-week investigation the school superintendent is recommending that wilson be suspended for 15 days. the student's family is still asking for criminal charges to be filed. police in nashville filed a taser at a suspect not once, not twice, but three times and he still didn't stay down. the man was accused of stealing money from the fast food restaurant where he worked. we have the story.

>> get down. put your hands behind your back. >> reporter: police asked him in the parking lot of the restaurant to fall to the ground a number of times. he refused. >> get down, get down! >> reporter: with taser guns drawn, police activate the camera on the tasers and one officer fires a taser probe at him who is 6'1" and weighs 300 pounds. >> get down on the ground! >> reporter: you can see it temporarily stuns him, but then he gets up as if nobody happened. a second probe is fired by another officer but he removed the probes and evades police. after a third taser burst there's no effect. three may seem like a lot. metro police say how often an uncomplying suspect is tasered is up to an officer. >> you want to use the minimum number of taser bursts necessary to affect an arrest.
