and didn't allow them to speak for most of the time they were kept there. live in los angeles, jay dwra. now, back to you. a serious crash in southeast washington today. it happened on pennsylvania avenue. one of the cars was left on its roof. shortly after it happened, concerned citizens sprang into action. traycee wi kins is on the screen with more. >> the media was standing over here, including myself and the photographer waiting for a press conference from the mayor. there were a number of government officials when we heard a huge bang, looked down the road and saw one of these vehicles flipped over. everything sprang into action. i was one of the folks who called 911 and report a serious crash. first a bang that sounded more like an explosion followed by smoke. then almost everyone on the street of pennsylvania and alabama avenues in southeast ran, not from the accident but to it, trying to save the people

trapped inside. a cadillac with two people inside rammed the suv in front of it with enough force to cause the vehicle to flip over. there were three people in the suv. we talked with the only man who was able to walk away on his own. the driver e of the suv. >> he hit me from the back. when i turned around i was dragging. it was, oh, my god, are my mother and my aunt all right. so when the vehicle stopped rolling i got out of the vehicle and proceeded to help free my mother. >> reporter: media crews and government officials happened to be standing near the intersection waiting for a press conference from the mayor when the collision happened just after 4:00 p.m. >> i talked to the fire chief on the way over here. he knew we were having a press conference. he gave me briefing. he said it's a very bad accident and i got to be honest with you it looked worse than the chief described. >> reporter: while two were

pulled from the vehicle by private citizen, two more had to be cut out from the vehicle and air lifted to the hospital. >> so fast. they opened the cars, pulled them out and got them to the hospital. real heroes, our fire department. >> reporter: they were all conscience when pulled from the vehicles we have no update on the vehicle. this goes without saying. if you're planning on coming through pennsylvania avenue, you have not come this way yet, don't come this way. traffic is seriously backed up because this intersection is closed at alabama avenue and pennsylvia ave east. all students at d.c. public high schools are going to be able to get tested for sexually transmitted diseases in the coming school year. the district has decided to expand a pilot programhat was started last year at eight high schools. it found that 13% of some 3,000 students tested positive for stds according to the health department. that program is voluntary.

>> reporter: meanwhile at the fitness club people are coming one by one to pay their respects, trying to make their peace with what happened. troubling questions and even more troubling answers about a shooting rampage and why it happened. local authorities and the fbi say they want to find and talk to anyone who might have read sodini's blog. it's not clear any laws were broken but they want to ask why someone who read it didn't report it. in bridgeville, pennsylvania, i'm prien moor, nbc news. >> six of the people shot are still in the hospital including pregnant aerobics instructor. she's listed in fair condition. she says doctors have told her her baby is fine. a gunman opened fire at a home in buffalo, new york, overnight. killing two and injured three others. it was 2:00 in the morning. a 20-year-old man and 19-year-old woman were killed at the scene.

three others were taken to the hospital in serious condition. police still don't have a motive or an arrest. the gunfire erupted a few hours after neighbors and police wrapped up their national night out to promote safe neighborhoods. mahmoud ahmadinejad was sworn in for a second term as iran's president. that ceremony was not without opposition. many boycotted the swearing in at the parliament building. outside hundreds of protesters chaptered death to the dictator. several western nations including the u.s. showed their a displeasure with the disputed election by withholding letters of congratulations. >> he did not mention them by name but he said no one in iran was waiting for anyone's congratulations. meanwhile there's still no official word on the three americans arrested in iran last week. those americans were staying in a hotel in the kurdish city

about 160 miles north of baghdad. a senior kurdish official says the border between iran and iraq is not clearly marked in that area and that the americans accidentally strayed into iran. the hikers were last seen on august 30th. iran's state television has reported that they were, in fact, arrested. there is a visible change coming to iraq after about a month after u.s. forces withdrew from urban areas. the blast walls that divide baghdad's neighborhoods will be removewithin 40 days. those walls were constructed mostly by troops after the invasion in 2003. they were located around the capitol's green zone. military bases and other security building. they were a protective measure but they did cause recentment among the baghdad residents. they turned the city into a maze an i made commuting a nightmare. coming up tonight we're going to tell you about the controversy surrounding a fraternity party.

outside now, our temperature has dropped to 85 degrees. pleasant evening out in around the river, isn't it? our current temperature here with the dew point at 65 is 85, and the heat index not too bad. here's where some of the heat is down to our south. raleigh right now, 92 degrees. even this, a lot of spots are into the 80s and 60s often the lakes. this is, i think, some of the air that we'll be seeing. dew point right now in buffalo and sault ste. marie are in the 50s. because we get a little area of low pressure coming by us, but in back of it, one brief break, i think, in the humidity and that will be friday nchlt the meantime we stillave that sort of summary pattern here, but we have the cluster of showers down to the west and southwest. here in washington we're not seeing anything to our west and southwest. that's where there are some showers and i'll take you down there. you can see, oh, spots like on into kentucky. remember yesterday that terrible, terrible flooding?

well, some of that leftover rain is now moving into western north carolina, even southwestern virginia heading in toward roanoke and a little bit of low pressure is forming in southwestern virginia. i think that's the thing that will be coming up and over us as we go through tomorrow telaigont late tonight and tomorrow morninglet earlier today look what the storm did. this is at our affiliate there in cincinnati. wham. we're looking at the tower. yes, the high points do get hit with lightning. that's not where you want tobe, any high points. as a matter of fact, as we know right here, northwest washington, our tower gets hit with washington many, many times. and with that area of rain down in north carolina in the mountains of north carolina, look at how cool it is right now. that's a beautiful area in the mountains of north carolina. over and inch and a half of r n rain. so here's the futurecast. overnight tonight we'll see that area of low pressure forming to our south, then move off the coast tomorrow by midday, but around it, some moisture northwesterly breezes. so it will be rather cool.

and i think folks into southern maryland, lower eastern shore could be seeing upwards of a half inch or more rain that will be lingering for a good part of tomorrow. and with that temperatures tomorrow only into the 70s. mast, when it's raining there may be som spots into the high 60s and low 7. mid morning to early afternoon. so for your the remainder of the evening, though, just cloudy with high clouds out there. temperatures, 80 to 85 degrees. the bright object you may have seen out in the sky, that is tonight near the full moon is the planet jupiter. that's jupiter out in that brightest object. cloudy skies with a chance of rain tomorrow morning, especially prince george's county, frederick county. i think around washington we may see some rain beginning 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 in the morning. then some lingering showers tomorrow afternoon. to the south it will be sort of cool rain that may not move out even until 4:00, 5:00 for the eastern shore.

a business disstrukt. they were stuck atop the 40-story building but not close enough to the top to climb up on the roof their own. firefighters cleared spectators down below and broke out windows on the 37th floor and took the workers inside. neither of the window washers was seriously injured. it took a couple of tries but a beached whale in iceland is now back at seat. it's 50 feet long. it became a stranded recently for some reason and the harbor patrol first attempted to help the whale to the open water and couldn't do so. they called in marine experts. after taking a look at the situation they were able to use two boats to tow the whale to safe waters jo and more ducklingings down storm drains. this time it was in altoona. this time a cop saved the day. they became trapped in the drain yesterday. police and animal control officers crawled through the drains and fished them out one
