man hit and killed by a car yesterday in bethesda. 47-year-old dwayne an drumpt he was struck around 3:30 on river road at wilson lane. police say the driver was not hurt. and did remain on the scene. it was a massive devastating fire. last week it destroyed the home of the former president of the d.c. school board. firefighters struggled to get water to get the blaze out. now authorities say they know why. megan mcgrath has that story. >> reporter: a 75-year-old corroded pipe. that was servicing the high drapts in the neighborhood and that landed inability to get water to the area is one of the major things that thwarted efforts to get the fire out. >> not only were homes of a much

different size but it is also probably significant corrosion to have a tremendous impact on the amount of gallons that can be pumped through the pipes. according to a preliminary report released by the city, the two hydrants closed to the home pumped 323 and 296 per minute respectively. that is significantly less water than needed to put out a fire in such a large home without sprinkler. >> the significantly off what we needed. but it's important to remember again, as the mayor said, is 15,000 square feet, which is a very big house. and the house was significantly involved. so it was probably, you know, 800 to 1,000 gallons or more short of what we needed. >> responding crews said they couldn't get enough water to do their jobs. as emergency crews ran hose

a frantic search is under way for a missing mother. 24-year-old tiffany holsey was seen last july 24th at 37th place southeast. yesterday was her 5-year-old's birthday. they searched through the park where tiffany has been known to frequent. her mother said she can't think of any reason why tiffany would disappear. a new challenge for d.c.'s gun law. more speed cameras coming to the area. earlier this year an attorney's lawsuit sparks an overturn of hand guns. now he's challenging gun-carrying regulation. current d.c. law allows guns only at home for self-defense. he filed suit yesterday to try to carry the e restrictions and

weapons in the nation's capital. a local beauty queen pleaded guilty to obstructing a police investigation. it involved her boyfriend. she was charged with broad possession and conspiracy to distribute cocaine. her boyfriend is brother and 67ear-old were also arrested in the case. she was crowned miss maryland in 2004. she'll be sentenced in november. right now montgomery county is the only maryland jurisdiction to use speed cameras. but that's about to change. a law authorizing the accuse of cameras is statewide in school zones and highway work zones. in effect october 1st. many are gearing up for that including the city of new carrollton. chief wright said he can't be around to always make sure they use the cameras.

marinated with a slider and a little slaw and grilled watermelon, grilled corn and three-plated like an entre, accompanied by a duck barbecue sauce. >> it all sounds quite intricate. are you sure we'll be able to do it? >> we have a nice little grill. go ahead and get a couple skewers on. if you're doing a dinner party, you want people to munch on something with their wine once they go. as you can see, we get them going. we don't want the barbecue sauce until the last month. the one reason i did the slides is because it's quick. >> when did you season it? >> once it goes on the grill here. i have marinated them in

lemongrass, ginger. i have kosher salt and a little bit of black pepper. and we're going to get that one. and then the duck breast, you go a little bit slower. so we'll push it on the back of the grill and let the skin render so it's nice and crisp. we'll get all this going. as you can see, it's cooking quickly. the sates will go quickly. they're browning up already. >> absolutely. and i do like my duck crispy, too. all the seasonings, if the camera can come inside, they're simple. >> salt, pepper, rosemary, parsley and thyme. and we have the corn. the corn will be put on last minute and grilled watermelon. we'll start and see how it goes. and grilled watermelon is a neat thing. we have red and yellow.

a serious accident shut down part of route 301 in chaurls county, maryland. three vehicles were involved in the crash. this happened at the intersectiwhite plains. several people were taken to the hospital. all lanes of route 301 were shut down. they are back open now. . >> maryland state police are investigating the cause of the accident. well, veronica is back indoors without samples. they're still cooking. >> i didn't have any pocts. pineapple, watermelon. it's still cooking out there. we're going to plate it up next with the wine. >> what a day for cooking out. >> i know, i know. those of us in the weather department we had lunch outside. >> oh, you did, did you? you got to have lunch? we had to work through it. uh-huh. yeah. >> sorry.

96 degrees wichita today. 97 dallas. that's that bubble of heat that's going to be pushing eastward. the heat index, temperatures what it feels like when you factor in the humidity, 105 in wichita. 104 in dallas. our heat index sunday likely to be over 100 degrees. we have this big ridge of high pressure over the east. as it does so, our winds more south-southwest. more humidity pushing over it. stifling conditions. could have thunder showers with the weather front, the warm front. saturday, pushing through isolated showers. this evening, awfully pleasant with temperatures dropping easily into the low 80s. by tomorrow morning, 62 to 68. still feeling pretty decent early part of the day tomorrow. saturday too with dewpoint temperatures into the low 60s. your high tomorrow with some high clouds moving through will be 86 to 91.

hello and welcome back to news 4 at 4:30. here are some of the top stories at this hour. encouraging jobless numbers for the month of july. the nation's unemployment rate dipped for the first time in 15 months. and employers cut fewer jobs last month offering a strong signal that the recession is finally easing. prince william county police are investigating an accident that killed a pedestrian. they say a man was crossing jefferson davis highway in woodbridge which he was hit by two advance, each heading in opposite directions. the man did not use a crosswalk. no charges have been filed. a city report said inadequate water flow from fire hydrants and hilly terrain hindered the effort to stop a

blaze in northwest washington last week. the report also says, however, it's debatable just how much so fast house could have been saved had water flow been greater. health authorities say we are still weeks away from knowing how bad the h1n1 virus will be since most school haven't opened yet. >> but educators are doing whatever they can to deep schools open. here's tracy potts. >> reporter: cdc is not recommending extra cleaning. isolate sick students and staff and send them home. but very few schools should have to close. >> it is nowlear that closure of schools is rarely indicated, even if h1n1 is in the school. >> reporter: officials now recommend sick students stay home only one day after they're well, not a whole week, unless their virus gets worse. kids with sick family members

a woman claim be to be connecticunuf rse othe year is behind bars. turns out that's the title she bestowed upon herself. 56-year-old posed as a nurse in a doctor's office. a complaint by a patient led to a police investigation. she wasn't even a nurse at all and didn't have a nursing license. she spent $2,000 of here own money totageer a fake dinner ceremony where she pretended she was being honored by the connecticut nurses association. there's no such group. if convicted she could spend up to five years in prison. dallas police are trying to figure out how a 13-year-old spent two weeks in jail under a false identity. she was arrested at a department store where she was stealing clothes, candy and lingerie. she then gave police a fake name and said she was 17. the teenager spent two weeks in adult county lockup. officials say she may have lied

because she's a runaway. he spent a year and a half in jail accused of murdering his twin brother. now a teenager is free after police discovered they had the wrong man. derris lewis was charged with killing his 17-year-old brother dennis. the teen was shot to death in 2008 during a home invasion. derris left a bloody palm print on the wall. but now investigators say there wasn't any blood at all. all charges have now been dropped. the wife of south carolina governor mark sanford is moving out. she moved out today with her four sons, a month after the governor admitted publicly to having an affair with a woman in argentina. he called that woman his soul mate. she's moving to the family home 120 miles away. e said she will continue to
