is on. if you thought today was hot, wait until tomorrow. good evening. i'm craig melvin. first some breaking news to tell you about. a metro worker h been seriously injured while working on the tracks just before 10:00 tonight. just before 10:00 that worker was working on the orange line at the vienna metro station. somehow a piece of equipment that is used to repair some track hit the employee. we're told that the metro worker s been air lifted to the hospital with serious injuries, orange line service between vienna and west falls church has been suspended. shuttle buses are being used to get riders to their stops. we'll update you on that story soon we learn more. back to our top story. the hot waseather. how hot are we talking for tomorrow, first of all? >> it's going to be hotter than today, that's first and foremost. in fact, tomorrow could be a record-breaking temperature day. the record high for tomorrow at

reagan national is 98 degrees. and we are going to be very close. but the fact is, the humidity is what will make it feel that much worse. so today we hit 96 degrees. that is a warm one. 97 down in richmond. right now we're down to 85. so it is really warm out there at 11:00 in the evening. dewpoints are in the upper 60s. so it's really humid. now, because of the combination, tomorrow the weather service, and i also think that it's going to feel like easily 100 degrees. possibly up to about 105 degrees tomorrow with the heat and the humidity, the combination of both. because of this the weather service has issued a heat advisory for a good part of the area. again, tomorrow, with the moisture it could easily feel like 100 to 105. the question is just how long does this hottest weather of the season last? of course, all the answers coming up in just a few. back to you. >> thank you so much. some folks stayed inside to beat the heat. other folks had to actually spend the day in the humidity.

darcy spencer has a story tonight from northeast washington where some firefighters had a particularly tough time. >> reporte all right. we'll get to darcy's story in just a moment on those firefighters having a tough time battling the heat. yesterday's collision between a helicopter and a small plane. today divers pulled a helicopter and four more bodies out of the hudson river. nine people were killed in yesterday's crash. faa sources tell nbc news the plane may have been in a climbing right turn when it hit er. helico some new dramatic photos show the impact. the impact. the airplane's wing literally sheered off. the helicopter was ripped apart in a puff of smoke. investigators are going to use those images and some witness o piece together that crash. two bodies are still missing

tonight. it is new york city's worst air disaster since 9/11. meanwhile, back here locally, a small plane crashed into lake anna this afternoon, killing a man and injuring a teenage girl. a 46-year-old died. his 17-year-old daughter survived but is in the hospital tonight. police say the plane experienced problems shortly after takeoff. investigators are now looking into what caused that crash as well. we're going to head back to darcy spencer now. darcy spencer doing, of course, tonight, a little earlier we talked abo the heat. some folks stayed inside to beat the heat and humidpy. other folks had to spend the day in the hot sun. darcy spencer joining us from northeast washington where some firefighters had an added challenge tonight. >> reporter: on 3rd street in northeast washington firefighters battle a two-alarm blaze at a three-story townhouse. some of them also had to battle

heat exhaustion in the scorching temperatures. >> the heat took its toll on the very brave firefighters when they began making entrance into the building. probably about 90, 95 degrees. almost 100% humidity. >> reporter: some firefighters were obviously distressed by the heat. they were given periods of rest and plenty of water to drink. some cooled down on the special chairs made with ice packs. >> we had two or three firefighters that had to be thoroughly checked over by our emergency medical services folks. we provided fluids, did on-scene monitoring. >> reporter: at fedex field more than 70,000 fans braved the heat. fans say the heat inside the stadium approaching unbearable. >> it was brutal. absolutely bruceal. a lot of humidity. extremely hot. but the fans had fun. >> that's what it felt like. probably felt like 150 because we were back there cooking in the grill with all the food and all that. way up on the topside, facing the front of the stadium.

that's where the sun was beating down on us. >> reporter: prince georges county fire officials say several fans had to be treated for heat exhaustion, including an 18-month-old baby. some had to be transported as a precaution. >> we tell people go to libraries, go to malls, go to stores they know have air-conditions and just get themselves inside and out of the environment. >> reporter: as steve mentioned, tomorrow's expected to be a lot worse. the fire chief tells me they're already making preparations, having canteens ready to go out on fire calls to help keep those firefighters hydrated. it's going to be a scorcher. reporting live from northeast. >> thank you. there were two separate deadly crashes involving motorcycles today in charles county. six bikers lost control and crashed along bumpy oak road around 1:00. a man in his 40s was killed. a couple hours later a second crash on billingsley road in white plains.

police say a car crossed the white line. the five people in the car tried to run away. but police caught them a short time later. revelations that a train operator narrowly avoided a similar crash months before that deadly metro collision that killed nine. according to some documents obtained by "the washington post," a blue train overran the potomac avenue station coming within 500 feet of another train already in the tunnel. the driver hit the emergency brakes. metro says the problem in that instance was with equipment on board the train. meanwhile, track work continues between the fort todd and tacoma stations on the red line as med row continues repairs in the area of the deadly accident. president obama got right down to business tonight after arriving in mexico for the north american summit. mr. obama's first meeting in guadalajara was with mexican president felipe calderon. most of the meetings are set for

a police chase in california has deadly consequences. a guy driving a stolen car tries to get away from the cops, goes through a stop sign and slams into a pickup. seven people were killed including all three in the car and four childre who were thrown frothupe pick truck. police say none initherpi vehicle had on a seat belt. authorities believe the dodge neon has been carjacked overnight about ten miles from the site of the crash scene. a riot between rival gangs at a california prison sent 55 inmates to hospitals. the riot started last night at the california institution for men. several fires broke out during

the riot. about 7:00 this morning officers had the riot under control. prison officials say some of the inmates were seriously injured. none of the prison staff was hurt, though. south carolina governor mark sanford used state aircraft for political and personal trips. that's according to a new report out tonight. the associated press found the governor often took his wife and children along. that's against the state's official use rules. records show the two-term republican used state aircraft to get to his children's sporting events, hair appointments, dental appointments and political party gatherings. the government office says sanford has done nothing wrong. friday san ford's wife and their four sons moved out of the governor's mansion. back in june sanford admitted having an affair with a woman from argentina. ahead tonight, a big disapoint for d.c. united fans stuck in a traffic jam for much

punishment allows residents $6 admission. the newseum is also offering half off its usually $20 admission. the god father of micel jackson's three children claims that he is actually the father of the late singer's daughter, paris. mark lester is a long-time jackson friend. a london newspaper quotes him as saying he gave his sperm so jackson could have kids. lester now says he believes paris resembles his own daughter. he says he's coming forward because he believes it's the only way he'll be able to stay in contact with the jackson children. a deadly typhoon is moving through asia. it has killed nine so far. that typhoon has unleashed some heavy rains and triggered landslides in western japan. this is some video from taiwan where floodwaters toppled the hotel there. in china, 1 million people have had to evacuate their homes and move to higher ground. fortunately, nothing like that here. but we are dealing with some potentially dangerous heat.

warm tomorrow. all is quiet on digital doppler. not the way it's going to stay for a couple of days. but the weather service has issued a heat advisory for a good chunk of the area. this is from noon tomorrow until 10:00 tomorrow evening. you can see the heat advisory stretches from north carolina all the way up towards new jersey. so 84 right now. you factor in the moisture and it feels like 89. t west it feels even worse. feeling like 92 now many st. louis, 91 in memphis. in the upper levels of the atmosphere the jet stream has pushed up towards the knnorth. this is creating that southwesterly wind flow. today we were at 96 degrees. tomorrow we'll be close to 100. again, with the moisture it will feel like 100 to 105 degrees. but tomorrow is the hottest day. after that we're going to start to cool things down as we head towards tuesday. a little bit cooler. then the front right here will drop into the area brings ua
