divers are still trying to recover more victims and more wreckage from last weekend's collision of a sight-seeing tour helicopter and a private plane over the hudson river. the weather made the search efforts difficult. kristen dahlgren has the latest. >> reporter: in the mercky waters off manhattan, divers fought strong currents and suspended the search for a time before they were able to pinpoint what they believe is the plane's wreckage from saturday's midair collision. but the twisted mal already pulled from the hudson tells a tale of how the small plane and helicopter were torn apart in an innoce instant. >> i don't know in this case who made the mistake. that's for the ntsb to decide. what i do know is that nine people are dead. >> reporter: pictured obtained by fox news show the moment of impact, the plane's wing literally sheered off.

the plane may haveeen in a climbing right turn when it hit the helicopter. a fellow tour pilot tried frantically to warn the chopper. >> it was just too quick. he was being overtaken by the other aircraft. >> reporter: many pilots say they aren't surprised. along with the investigation, now questions about whether that's safe. >> what we want to try to figure out is how to prevent them. whether it's through increased -- the ability to see another aircraft, make them more visible, better communications, better procedures or protocols. >> reporter: a they are questions that are sure to continue, even as crews now find more clues as to what may have gone wrong this weekend. kristen dahlgren, news4. investigators say with so much wreckage, so spread out, it could be a while before there's an official cause for the crash. chilling new details today in the case of that man who

opened fire inside a health club near pittsburgh. turns out police actually questioned him days before but had to let him go. police say they picked up george sediny on july 30th. the witness wasn't sure sediny was the man he'd seen, so police let sodini go. less than a week later, sodini opened fire, killing three women before turning the gun on himself. international issues like trade and immigration were the focus of today's north american summit in mexico, but domestic issues like health care reform remained in the spotlight. president barack obama met with canadian prime minister steven harper and phillipy cauldron today. mr. obama said immigration reform in the u.s. will have to wait until after the fall when he expects lawmakers to pass health care reform. he also expressed support for

a southeast d.c. resident was horrified when she found a dog's head sticking out of a plastic bag in the dumpster outside her building. this may have been the result of illegal dogfighting. keith is working on this story. he joins us now with more. tell us about what the condition of this dog was when this woman found her. >> when the dog was found, we talked to the humane enforcement officer who found the dog and actually this officer has been working for years in the system. so this is one of the most horrible scenes she'd ever seen. the dog had been wrapped

completely in a black plastic bag. somehow, they think because of the instinct of survival, the dog ate its head through the bag. and so when the dog was found, lots of blood, lots of gashes, lots of bruising. the dog in very, very bad shape. >> we've got the pictures. what was she like? what is her demeanor like? >> incredibly, because they don't know exactly how the dog wound up there. they don't know if it was a fighting dog. but -- so we don't know exactly what to expect. this was -- despite what this dog has been through, one of the warmest, sweetest dogs. she's about 2 1/2 years old. and a pit bull type. but they -- it could have been even a -- not a dog that's been trained to fight, but a dog used to bait other larger dogs and teach them how to fight. a very loving, very warm, sweet dog. yeah. just a very, very tragic and sad story.

>> oh, it certainly is. they're working on her over at the -- >> that's correct. she had really bad -- she looks a lot better than when she first came in on friday. she's had one surgery,everal stitches. the worst wound was over her right eye. but they believe that they have been able to save the eye so she will be able to have complete eye sight. just the -- they don't know again exactly how she got there. they don't know if she was a fighting dog or attacked by another dog. but the bottom line is someone did try to discard this dog. >> sure. >> her spirit is what kept her alive and now she's on the mend. >> she's a fighter. >> definitely. >> keith gavin, thank you. playing high school sports on a hot day like this can be a real challenge. high school football practices are increasingly under scrutiny these days.

today, some teens are putting players through special training to help them avoid the dangers. reporter scott friedman has that story. >> reporter: the first day of practice. helmets on, watering stations ready as the players tackle the heat. >> of course, we constantly talk to them about nutrition, hydrating their body and making sure they've done things 24, 48 hours before. >> reporter: this year, high school football teams will get a formal training session reminding them how to recognize the danger signs. >> they just tell you to drink lots of water. drink some water, get water in your system. >> reporter: at carter high school, the coaches are extra aware. in 2004, a player died of heat stroke after a practice. it remains a stop concern for coaches and parents. >> i definitely agree that they're doing it more than enough, you know. their part on making sure that those children are staying healthy out here in this heat. >> we've got to monitor a little bit closer, be more mindful, make sure the coaches are mindful of this every year.

having a good attitude on life could help your heart. researchers in pittsburgh studied data collected from 100,000 post-menopausal women. the optimistic women were 10% less likely to develop heart disease and had a 14% lower risk of death overall. women who were highly cynical were 16% more likely to die during the eight-year study period. they also found that african-american women were more optimistic -- who were more optimistic had the biggest health advantage, 33% lower risk of death. well, despite all the ground-breaking strides made in medicine over the past four decades, many people are still clueless about tir bodies. researchers at kings college in london wanted to see whether patients and the general public were -- knew more about their body than they did 40 years ago. turns out, not really. only 27% knew where their

kidneys were. the biggest surprise, patients being treated for a problem with a specific organ were no more likely to find that organ than the general public. many experts agree that breast feeding is best for babies. now researchers say it may also be best for mothers at risk for breast cancer. 60,000 women were a part of a study at the university of north carolina. those who had a family history of breast cancer were 60% less likely to develop the cancer themselves if they breast fed their babies. that means breast feeding had the same protective benefits as taking cancer-preventing drugs for five years. however, the findings did not apply to women who didn't have family histories of breast cancer. coming up on "news4 at 4," we'll tell you about a local business that's hiring, and you don't have to send in a paper resume. also this afternoon, paula abdul is leaving "idol" but she could be joining another panel of judges.

and heavy rains. tropical storm felicia is now less than 350 miles from the island state. yesterday residents were out fiing up propane tanks and visiting their local hardware stores to stock up on supplies. the storm was recently downgraded and the biggest threat now is expected to be heavy rainfall. hawaii's civil defense is advising residents to monitor sudden increasing in surf heights and to secure any loose items around their homes. all right. he's back indoors and you're not dripping wet. got you three paper towels and a glass of water. >> you've got to hydrate out there. i really feel for any of the folks that have to fix the bridges, asphalt, paving. yikes. all those outdoor jobs, tough stuff today. you have my deepest sympathies on a day like today. outside right now, just high, thin clouds drifting over washington. our current temperature is a blazing 96 degrees. the dew point eased up just a

little bit now to 65, so our heat index, only 99 degrees. that west wind at 15 miles per hour really helping to warm the air up and dry it out just a touch. started off this morning at 76 degrees. all around the east coast, temperatures are way hot for this time of the year. 96 here in washington. 93 in new york. 96 in atlanta. 90 degrees in raleigh. dew points, midto high 60s across the east coast. large area of high pressure over southeastern georgia is going to provide us with a really warm and uncomfortable evening this evening. plenty of heat and humidity around. there is a weather front back out to our west that's firing up showers and thunderstorms across ohio and ahead of the front into portions of west virginia. here's a check of the doppler. there you can see a couple of thunderstorms now in the northern parts of west virginia, far western maryland. a few showers might actually live long enough to get into the shenandoah valley. might get a show or two within

the next 90 minutes to two hours or so. but gradually as that little line of showers comes east of the mountains, most of the action will die away. neighborhood network, the beach, 98 degrees at ocean city, maryland, right now. this was the day you picked to go to the beach. you have to stay in the water continuously. silver spring, maryland, 95 degrees right now. heat index values, 100 or better across much of the southeastern u.s. down into the southern plains states. here's a look at our futurecast. one or two lonely showers drifting east of the mountains this evening, but most of us are going to stay dry. this very warm, very stable air mass will kill off most of those showers once they come east of the mountains. then tonight, just a mix of clouds and clear skies. moon coming up after 9:00. during the day tomorrow, plenty of heat and humidity. as that weather front comes in, it could spark off thunder showers tomorrow afternoon. there will be a slight risk for severe weather from baltimore northbound through philadelphia,

multiple dogs in the 100 block of plaza street. we have just learned that that 20-year-old man is dead after that attack. we talked to police a short time ago. did not describe what kinds of dogs other than that they were in the control of animal control. we don't know the condition of the dogs, whether they are still alive or not. police got the call this afternoon from apparently someone in a home who was concerned about the welfare of this 20-year-old man who has just been pronounced dead. we will have much more on this story coming up on "news4 at 5" tonight. in other news this afternoon, the first vaccinations against swine flu are now being tested right here in the washington area. today, volunteers in baltimore and other cities began taking part in clinical trials of a

swine flu vaccine designed to protect against the h1n1 virus. brian mooar has the story. >> reporter: in baltimore and other cities, the first clinical trials for the new h1n1 swine flu vaccine. >> roll up your sleeve. >> reporter: 200 people volunteered to be the first. >> one, two, three. >> reporter: kevin drove from philadelphia to the university of maryland medical center to participate. >> i'm a biochemist, so i understand the importance of getting this vaccine. you know, the research -- a lot of good will come from it. >> reporter: this study involves far more than a single shot. >> they're going to be coming back to the clinic for blood sampling on day eight, day 21, and thereafter. >> reporter: researchers and subjects will be in contact for the next seven months. the biggest question in this study, how much vaccine should the rest of us get this fall? >> we don't know if it requires higher doses because people have

not experienced this particular vaccine before. or if it requires more than just one dose, two doses. >> reporter: with some children already returning to school, the government is getting ready to ramp up its vaccination efforts. in mexico, president obama talked swine flu strategy with his counterparts from mexico and canada. >> we resolve to continue taking all necessary preparations and precautions to prepare for the upcoming flu season. >> reporter: meanwhile, back in baltimore, volunteer meg gordon is just hoping to make a difference. >> you know, every medicine we take, somebody before us took a leap of faith and participated in a trial. so that's my part. >> reporter: researchers say they'll keep an eye on the adult volunteers for about two weeks before beginning a study on children. brian mooar, news4, washington. iraqi officials are concerned about u.s. soldiers who have gotten swine flu. the u.s. military says 51

american troops have been diagnosed with h1n1. all of them have been treated and have fully recovered. another 71 are suspected of carrying the virus. those troops are now in isolation. iraqi authorities say they're worried about the virus spreading. the country is also reporng its first swine flu-related death. a 21-year-old woman in southern iraq. the newlywed husband whose wife is accused of trying to kill him is speaking out about the case now. police say she thought she was hiring a hit man to knock off her new husband. but instead, she hired an undercover police officer. police showe the intended victim, michael, the video of his wife arranging the deal. he talked about that ordeal on the "today" show. >> when i kngot down to the pole staesh, the tapes were played for me and i heard my wife very clearly. it honestly hasn't sunk in yet. i still don't get what's really happened. it's just a very strange

situation. >> the wife is free on bond, but under court orders to stay away from her husband. he has filed for divorce now. there is yet another twist to the michael jackson case. the godfather of the singer's three children claims to be the biological father of the pop star's daughter, paris. mark lester says he donated sperm to jackson and debbie rowe and he says paris even resembles his 15-year-old daughter, harriet. lester now wants a paternity test to prove that he's paris' father. lester said he came forward with this announcement out of concern for the welfare of jackson's children. michael jackson fans will be able to see the king of pop perform again. a judge in l.a. has approved a major movie deal between michael jackson's estate, the concert promoter and columbia features. the judge gave jackson's mother,

welcome back. i'm chuck bell. it is indeed a blazing hot day to be outside today. 96 here in washington. 97 degrees down the road in richmond. 96 in raleigh, north carolina. 92 out on the eastern shore in maryland. satellite picture here, a few high clouds drifting over right now, but there are a couple of rumbles of thunder across parts of west virginia. now moving into far western maryland. we'll keep an eye on those. no severe weather expected, but i wouldn't be surprised in the shenandoah valley and west virginia to pick up on an isolated shower. not really much of a threat here for rainfall. just hot and sticky. overnight low temperatures tonight near 80 in downtown and near 80 by the bay. highs tomorrow up into the low 90s with about a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms rolling in here tomorrow afternoon. a little better chance of some showers coming up on wednesday. a little bit of a nice cooldown coming up for thursday and

friday. highs back down into the low and mid-80s. another chance for showers showing up on your saturday. as we look towards next weekend already. another check of the hot weather. i'll have my sweat gear on in a few more minutes. back down to you. heavy rains triggered a massive mudslide in a village in southern taiwan, burying hundreds of people. hundreds are still missing and feared dead. at least 100 others managed to escape the village and were rescued by helicopter. the heavy rain came with a typhoon which battered the entire country with high winds and ware heavy rain. taiwan's first flooding in five decades. when "news4 at 4" continues, we'll tell you which local bank is hiring, but don't even think about sding in a paper resume to apply for a job. and some booster seats could pose a danger to your child. we'll tell you about a recall that's affecting thousands of booster seats.

lots of banks are promoting their online services in an effort to go green, but one bank, pnc, also prints checks on recycled paper, makes check cards out of 100% recycled plastic, and over the past few years, construction of new pnc branches is also green. the company's now on the lookout for employees to join in. kimberly suiters has details. >> reporter: the dulles branch
