6:22 pm
well -- >> when we get the heat like this, this is a day to pool your thoughts. >> oh! >> it's a day where you -- all my blinds are drawn in my house. >> that's a good way to do it. >> we did make a record. i know that's a keen disappointment. but they said i'm heading for the shade. and i want to get out of here. the youngsters were under the sprinklers, too. our high temperature today made it up to 97 degrees. that's the highest that we've been this summer. the record, we missed it by one degree. we don't want to do a record tomorrow, do we? 101 degrees from 1900. right now it's hazy outside. there are showers and thunder shows, some folks out to the mountains of west virginia. 94 degrees, the humidity has been down. the dew point, 67. it's still sticky out there. but the heat index, now at 98.
6:23 pm
another example when we get the dew points into the mid to high 60s, the humidity is only 41%. well, not when it's 94. we're as hot as any place. dallas is 96. they've been hotter. earlier this morning, colorado was 32 degrees. now we've got this humidity in all over us. look at the humidity. the dew point in memphis is 74 right now. feels like it's 102 there. we're at 99 degrees. you can see we did have some high clouds. we hadn't had those high clouds, we could have made it to 98 or 99. there are nasty storms that have been firing up inn pennsylvania. you can see the batch out in the mountains of western maryland, west virginia. those are dying out. tomorrow there's a slight risk that there may be some nearer to us. right now, the batch that's the nastiest is up into pennsylvania. as a matter of fact, there's a severe thunderstorm watch until 11:00. there are thunderstorms in
6:24 pm
altoona and another line across oil city and western parts of pennsylvania. and morep u into new york state, around binghamton. this is what happened overnight and early today. this is south of buffalo. buffalo had 1.7 inches of rain. while our rainfall for the summer and since july is below average, many areas have been seeing excessive amounts of rain and flooding. once again, there are flood watches out there tonight because of those thunderstorms. here's what's going to be happening thefor us. we'll see storms stay to our north. tomorrow well be right back into the humidity with a lot of clouds around. i think we won't be seeing quite as much heat. that is during the afternoon. and then as we get later into tomorrow, a little weak weather front coming our way. it will give us the increased risk by the time we get into wednesday and wednesday evening of showers. tomorrow there's a risk of severe thunderstorms, parts of the lower hudson valley and northeastern maryland.
6:25 pm
and once again i the 90s but not 97 or 98. only 92, 93. we can deal with that. three days in a row of 90s. and that will be it. then for this evening, we'll be seeing the hazy skies that we have. temperatures will only dip to about 90 degrees by 8:00 or so. 8:00, 9:00. with high clouds around and that humidity, we'll really see the temperatures stay up. tomorrow morning when you get up and head out, the temperatures will probably be in the mid-70s, even early in the morning. and then we'll get to 90 again about 11:00, 12:00, but with more in the way of cloudiness. i think our temperatures probably only top out around 94, 95 degrees. and then later on tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening ark slight risk for some showers. i think we'll have to keep an eye peeled on wednesday. wednesday, temperature o inlyn the 80s. staying fairlyumid into thursday and friday. by thursday and friday, the temperatures, quite a bit different. quite a bit lower, into the low 80s. right now the weekend looks like
6:26 pm
it will be party sunny, but in the 80s. not the 90s. >> all right. >> so not a long, extended siege of heat and humidity. >> we have been -- >> the hottest day of the summer, today. >> if people have their dogs -- >> pets. >> if they're chained outside, bring them in. don't do that to them. it's very cruel. >> they can stay cool insiden the basement, too. they like that. >> thank you, bob. still ahead on "news4 at 6," with a little relief in the heat, we'll show you where you can stay cool and comfortable this week. also ahead, another tragedy for metro. we'll have the latest on the investigation after a worker was killed on the job last night. and a neighbor rescues a dog from a dumpster. the animal may have been involved in an illegal dog fight. and the latest on efforts to contain a wildfire that already has burned 10,000 acres. there's something big happening at pizza hut.

i've mad a correlation. nascar drivers lose eight to ten pounds each race because of heat. and redskins and football players in days like this can lose the same amount of heat on the practice field. that's why you always see them rehydrating.
6:46 pm
the redskins over the weekend had the first real experience hitting, really tackling in their scrimmage on saturday, but that was nothing compared to the batting going on today against the heat. the heat index had already reached 100 degrees. the redskins, though, were toughing it out. let's go back to ashburn. hot weather. it's nothing new for the players, but today it was just ridiculous. offensive linemen like number 73 you see there, jeremy bridges battling the heat. he w working through a sprained ankle. london fletcher trying to clear his eyes here a bit. guys were taking any chance they could to cool down. taking their water, drinking the gatorade. and you know that jim zorn is always going to turn to humor when things get a little bit tough. >> this heat is wonderful. you know? it's going to be hotter this afternoon. man, we can't wait. can't wait. i hear it's going to be like 100 today. good for us. it helps us, you know.

because we -- we don't have to go on the turf. did you walk across the turf today? >> jim zorn knows about the power of positive thinking. the redskins are getting ready for their first preseason game thursday against the ravens in baltimore. there are plenty of questions to answer, especially on the injury front. dan hellie joins us live from redskins park. dan, i know it's so hot for you out there. i guess the heat wasn't too much for one inred wide receiver. >> yeah, lindsay. i believe you're talking about devon thomas. jim zorn is always good for at least one great quote a day. continues to see that devon thomas is ahead of malkin kelly for that number two receiver spot, which, of course, is the starting spot. not necessarily because he's better talent-wise, but because he is a better route runner right now. the problem is devon thomas has not been able to get back on the field at full sprength. this has been very interesting for devon thomas and santana mauz. both of them missing practice
6:48 pm
because of hamstring issues that have been bothering them for several days. thomas ran on the field for about half an hour after practice, all by himself, in the brutal heat. he says he wants to play against the ravens on thursday. he's not too worried about falling behind in that race for a starting receiver spot. >> i'm not concerned about that, man. you know, my main thing is to get back healthy and perform. you know, and for me to be at that level to perform, hopefully we can win. you know, that's what i'm concerned about. >> do you feel like if you're healthy, that's your spot to lose? >> call it what you want to call it, man. >> they just have to play. i'm t worried about keeping them healthy because they've got some distance to come. they have to play in ball games. and right now, we're still trying to get devon's hamstring to -- you know, all the treatment and things too, get his hamstring up to speed. and then we'll see how it goes. they need a lot of work. >> when jim zorn says they, he's
6:49 pm
talkin about malcolm kelly and kevin thomas. both missed so much time last year. they both had very disappointing rookies seasons. how do you balance out giving these guys enough playing time in the preseason but holding them back because you don't wan them to get hurt? he says i'm not worried about them getting hurt. they have to learn the system and they're going to have to produce this year for this team to be successful. one guy who is planning on producing and he did so last year is cornerback carlos rogers. he's missed some time with a strained calf, but carlos back in action. since yesterday, a very limited capacity. he says he doesn't know yet whether he will be suited up for thursday's game, but he did say there is no way that i'll miss the preseason. carlos rogers plans on being back in action soon. he's missed most of training camp. eight days to be exact. and was just back on the field yesterday. so he does have catching up to do. last year, fresh off a torn acl, he played great during the first
6:50 pm
half of the season, proving that he has the talent to be a legit starting nfl corner who is not afraid to lay the wood to receivers. as you can see in this browns game. rogers knows exactly what it means to him to be back out on the field. >> it's really important. you know, to get out here, you know, just to get back in football shape. you know, working out is totally different from running around out there. so get the chemistry down with the team. so, you know, i need to be out there. i don't plan on waiting until the regular season. i plan on -- if i can go this week, this week. if not, next week. >> lindsay, carlos keeps it pretty simple. he said if i can run, i'm going to play. he says he knows right away whether his calf is going to let him play or not. i guess we'll wait until thursday to see if he's going to be out there. it also, very funny, you were out here this morning and you see the guy whose walk off the field, they look like death. they can't take another step. then you see some guys like
6:51 pm
d'angelo hall or chris cooley who look like they could go for another three hours. it's amazing. >> it is amang. it's like pat collins was saying, you start to say things twice because you forget you've already mentioned it. how are you staying cool out there? >> i'll do my best. >> okay. sounds good. thanks for the hard work. >> the heat is already getting to him. >> he didn't even answer your question. >> last night was the kick-off to preseason action. the hall of fame game featuring the bills against albert haynesworth's former team, the titans, who made things entertaining to say the least. we're in canton, ohio. the titans really used trickery off the bat. fourth down, check out punter a.j. capaco. fakes the kick, behind his back. he knew he had them with that e. the punter goes 40 yards for a touchdown. that would give the titans a 7-0 lead. talk about satisfaction. well, for the bills, trent edwards has got a new target.
6:52 pm
he found him early on. edwards to ar rterrell owens. the bills lose to the titans 21-18 in the hall of fame game. for 42 nascar drivers waiting through rain to race this afternoon at watkins glenn was just prolonging the inevitable. if there is anyone that owns the road course at watkins glenn, it's tony stewart who had won 4 of 7 races there. we're in the glenn in new york. >> that is the 16 pit crew of greg biffle. they wanted a top ten and they got it. they finished fifth. lap 63, kasey kahne in the 9. sam hornish jr. in the 77. a horrible wreck. they were running side by side. they make that contact there. take another look. jeff gordon was caught up in it, too. unbelievable sight. good news, all three drivers were okay. but, man, check out all that
6:53 pm
damage. the 77 car lost the entire back end. he would finish 36th. well, now on the final lap. here comes tony stewart out front. tony stewart holds off marcus ambrose for his seventh road course win. stewart has now won five times at watkins glenn alone. in fact, after the race he said this is my house. a victory much well deserved for tony and his crew. stewart flat-out owned it today. marcus ambrose finished second. carl edwards came in third. a very, very action-packed -- >> i love it when it gets slick, but this is my house right here. we ran really, really well here. just thank our fans for sticking it out. i know it's a lot for a lot of those people to take off an extra day of work to watch us race. we appreciate them doing that. >> and that was tony stewart who shocked everybody. now he's won three races. people in the beginning of the season thought he's an owner for the first time. he'll never win one.
