catching it is down to the norfolk area where they had over an inch of rain in one hour as those storms move through. look at eastern parts of north carolina. almost two inches of rain. ocean city, too. half inch of rain with the temperature 82 degrees. heading out for the beaches, next week, i want to show you what could become, what could become anna. there it is. it is small and right now winds of 35 miles an hour. it is still a tropical depression. here's the distance over a thousand miles from miami. so here's the projected track. folks at the tropical prediction center do think it will become a tropical storm, a weak tropica storm. as we get into the weekend, this is the -- real uncertainty. it does begin to get by early next week perhaps, perhaps a threat. but that would be next week. the meantime, overnight tonight, for the remainder of the night, some of the showers, thundershowers, go by. and weather front is off the coast. little area of low pressure comes along it. so behind it we will study a

moist flow tomorrow. that's the reason i think we will may see showers of our own. in the meantime, partly to mostly cloudy. the evening showers, even a few rumbles of thunder, settling down. i don't expect any severe weather. tomorrow morning, partly cloudy skies. it is still going to be humid with the temperatures tomorrow morning into the high 60s to low 70s. tomorrow afternoon also, lot of clouds around which will once again keep our temperatures into the high 70s to low 80s. i think we do see some showers and we could see some tomorrow afternoon and at that, more likely for you folks in the eastern shore and southern maryland, then we will begin to get back into high pressure and more sunshine. weekend still looks fine. lot of sunshine p on saturday and sunday. but remaining humid into next week. but in the mid 80s rather than mid 90s. >> all right. >> it has been quiet. >> it has. it could be the first. even -- tomorrow, it may be named. >> okay. thanks, bob.

making headlines tonight. >> the health care debate continues to rage in town halls across the country. nonpartisan fact checking groups are accusing both sides of the distortions. factcheck.org says president obama is being untruthful when he says health care reform is going to be paid for. we don't know who will be paying for it yet. the federal reserve left interest rates unchanged today. that's yet another sign central bank believes the economy is starting to even out. it proves housing picture and surge in the stock market are key factors contributing to that rosier outlook. a charles county judge is accused of flattening the tires of a woman that parked in a restricted area. the incident was allegedly caught on cell phone video. that video has yet to surface. the laplata police department confirms they are investigating the case of vandal itsm and won't confirm who they are investigating. coming up in this half hour, one of d.c.'s most recognizable landmarks, getting a new look. world leader has come down with the h1n1 virus. a group of hotel workers are the group of latest powerball

winners. wait until you hear what they plan do with their winnings. as a member of the national transportation safety board, debbie hersman has been on the scene of numerous devastating accidents from plain crashes to this year's deadly metro crash on the red line. hersman's job was to relay critical information to the public and in critical times. hersman was sworn in as chair of the ntsb recently. pat collins has more on her story. >> reporter: debbie hersman is the daughter of an air force general. as a military brat she lived in 13 different places and went to four different high schools. she says it made her resilient. debbie hersman's new office overlooks the airport, the river, and the freeway. >> i think that this is the most tangible kind of representation of what we do. this is how america works. this how they move. >> reporter: debbie hersman the new chairman of the national transportation safety board. she's been on that board for five years.

>> have concerns about why this train did not stop. >> reporter: she has been involved in a number of major crash investigations. and including the deadly red line collion last june. debbie hersman lives with her family inedriarer h mshedarear sweetheart. he took her to the prom. they both went to virginia tech. and when she goes to a crash site, he watches over the family. >> there's one thing i did right in life. that's when i married well. my husband is fantastic. >> reporter: today we talked to chairman hersmanbout some issues. the biggest travel danger. >> really the biggest danger that faces most americans every day is getting in your car and driving on the highways. we lose 443,000 people every year on our nation's highways. >> reporter: metro safety. do you feel safe riding metro? >> i continue to ride metro. i ride metro regularly. i do several times a week.

i ride metro to get around in town. and a number of people with the safety board ride metro. so we all would like to see metro be as safe a ist possibly can be. >> reporter: debbie hersman's car. >> i actually drive a honda hybrid, the civic. i got it in 2002, the first year that they came out with that model of hybrid. and it is a fantastic car. gets really good gas mileage. >> reporter: debbie hersman. she is licensed to drive an 18-wheeler. licensed to drive a motorcycle. and she soloed in an airplane before she got her driver's license and is a certified child safety seat installer. and a t riathlete. i rode my bike a couple blocks. she has three kids. she is a noted cook. mean -- she really has to figure out what to do with her spare time.

>> taunt. if you leave something in your car that's -- that someone can see from the outside, that gives them an opportunity break into your car and take that property out. >> police add the chiefs, the thefts have happened at all hours. day or night. they say they do not know if the -- if they are dealing with one thief or a group of thieves. the most common items taken from cars including gps systems, laptops, cell phones. firefighters rescued three pets from auburn home in white oak today. they were called to the home on symphony woods drive this morning when they arrived they found flames shooting from the back of the house. three propane tanks that were in the back were burning. the flames quickly spread to the second floor and attic. no injuries. still no word on what caused this. in downtown d.c., one of the city's most recognizable landmarks is getting a $300,000 face-lift. we are not talking about one of our national memorials. but the chinese arch, stretches over g street, verizon center. tom sherwood reports.

>> p. >> reporter: 23 years ago, the sleepy face of downtown washington got a new feature, iconic chinese arch. added beauty. will have a tremendous impact of the economic growth in development in washington. >> reporter: d.c. taxpayers under then mayor barry and communist chinese government each chipped in $500,000 to build the arch designed by local architect alfred live who is overseeing the $300,000 renovation of the structure to replace parts. >> anchor, focal point. >> reporter: the arch preceded the extraordinary boom in downtown real estate. now bustling area that overwhelmed much of the old chinatown. it is alive with activity seven days a week but the verizon center and broad mix of retail and restaurants many brought in by developer cowgirl lass jamal. levy of cultural tourism d.c. says the arch is an iconic part

of washington. >> this defines the center of the chinese experience in washington, d.c. this is our second chinatown. the first chinatown pennsylvania avenue, 4 1/2 street. >> reporter: the $300,000 renovation project paid for by the district may be complete soon enough to reopen the arch this weekend. tom sherwood, news4, washington. >> g street was closed for several hours while a major piece of marble important the arch was moved into place. 48 feet high, 75 feet wide. it is one of the largest chinese arches in this country. a group of office workers from our area claimed a powerball lottery prize, pool of 27 employees at d.c.'s hilton hotel played the powerball last week. they matched all but one number and won $10,000. after taxes, that's a cool $259 each. when the woman that organized the pool told her co-workers about the win, at first they didn't believe it. >> i thought initially she was

a few showers and thundershowers. they are interesting for you. see that line, the blue line. watch as it comes out of the mountains, out of the -- heading towards manassas. that's the outflow boundary. you are going to get a nice breeze as a result of the outflow from those thunderstorms which are not severe. nor will they be tonight. temperatures will be dipping only into the low 70s tomorrow. back into the 80s and there may be especially in the afternoon showers, especially southern maryland. back to you. the u.s. has reached an axwreemt with the suisse government concerning thousands of secret suisse bank accounts. the terms of the deal are secret. the internal revenue service has been trying to obtain the names of 52,000 suspected tax dodgers. the irs met with resistance from suisse banking giant ubs and switzerland's government. arguing that to turn over the names would violate suisse banking confidentiality laws. laws that da back for centuries. one lawyer involved in the case says he expect it is deal to

involve a substantial handover of names. a mystery in britain. cargo ship on its way to north africa when it entered the straits of dover, it couldn't notify the brit herb coast guard. the ip has not been heard from since. it likely has been hijacked. one expert says the ship probably has been caught in a commercial dispute rather than a sort of piracy we have been seeing a lot of in marinent months off the coast of somalia. costa rica's president has contracted the swine flu. he's now quarantined at his home and has a sore throat and fever. he is being treated an anti-flu medication. 69 years old and has asthma and is in a higher risk of complications than most people but released a statement saying he feels well enough to keep working. a guy in illinois could spend six months in jail for yaing in court. his name is clifton .llmsia as n court when his coun as nc swateened on a drug charge

starter and missed the second game with the flu. rookie chris horton, 48, stepped in and played so well doughty never got his starting job back. shortly after that, doughty went down with a serious back yuri that ended his season. now doughty is trying to carve out a niche as a backup safety and according to his coaches he has never looked better. >> one of the great thing in my focus where it was last year. all of training camp, all of offseason last year, and it was just almost on getting by, my back was bothering me so much. this year has been focused on getting better. not just making the team but where am i going to fit in. i know i won't be the starter. impressing for time on the field. i'm trying tow prove that every time i'm out there and special teams i'm excited. 100% healthy and feel like i'm the leader on the special teams and got a couple of guys that aren't there anymore. i feel like i can really pick up that slack. >> reed has been the best since he has been here. his back is better than when he came out as a rookie. he has always been a solid player and always been a guy you count on.

enjoyable. there's actualla little more to it than her that. her moves get, you know, drivers' attention and is well aware of how important that is. hutchinson started in -- out on parking enforcement and has been on the job for three years and was hit by a car and took her years to get back on the street. the very next year she was hit by another car. she had to have knee surgery. can't even tell there that she had knee surgery. hutchinson, as you can tell, back in the groove. >> you should do some of that. >> i would love to do some of that. i would love to do the news like that. >> you should. >> if i had been hit by a car that many times i would be moving around like that to make sure i got everybody's attention. >> when you drive past somebody like that, it makes you happy and puts new a good mood. >> even if you are sitting in traffic. >> a lot of spirit. that's our broadcast for now.
