a serious crash injuries three siblings. all under age 17. 12-year-old tonight is in critical condition.

neighbors say the accident points to a bigger problem. good evening, everybody. i amim ndle jim andleim j and dn veightig off. germantown, ridge rn gsr .dei morningstar ride. an intersection neighbors have been griping about some time. derek ward joins us live with the story. d derek? >> four people were injured before 4:00 p.m. three victims lived down the street. they have all been hospitalized including a 12-year-old fighting for his life. police say the vw passat driver and three passengers was stopped at ridge road and morning star drive. the driver, 20-year-old kapur was northbound attempting to make a left turn on to morningstar when the ford work truck came up from behind. after the in pact both vehicles ended up beyond the intersection in the southbound lane. >> we're fortunate that somebody traveling in the other direction

didn't become involved in this collision. >> it's sad. very sad. crying. the driver was crying. >> residents of the community say sadly not the first serious accident here. >> three accidents here within the last two years. and two buses over there have not. this year. and we have one a couple years ago. >> those with driveways who faced the heavily traveled road say it can be a frightening experience coming and going. >> near misses every time. you take your life into your hand when you fry to get out of the driveway. fry to turn in. >> there have been petitions and pleas for a traffic light at the intersection. >> would like to see a light. this is the third serious accident in the nine years i lived here, at this corner, each time we have written letters. >> most seriously injured in the accident, 12-year-old, he was a rear-seat passenger in the vw and air lifted to children's national medical center with life-threatening injuries. the two other passengers, 15-year-old michael, 17-year-old

christine were taken to suburban hospital in serious condition. this is a heavily traveled thoroughfare especially during morning and evening rush hours. now it is becoming notorious. at least on this stretch, for carnage. >> how many fatalities and serious injuries do they need before they actually put a light? what does it take? >> the driver of the truck has been identified as a 44-year-old, of elkridge, maryland. not hospitalized. did stay on the scene able to talk to authorities. the cause of the crash remains under investigation. we are live in germantown, back few you in the studio. >> derek ward thank you. hundreds turned out for a vigil in southeast washington. 21-year-old, charl augustus williams was gunned down overnight. his friends called him gus. friends of williams joined a nonviolence group, rallying in his memory. williams was in a job training program trying to turn his life around. a dog that has captured

sympathy of our area endured surgery today. but as it battles to survive there are doubts those responsible for its condition will ever be found. news 4s, jackie benson, joins us with details. jackie. >> jim, with little progress made so far. a new donation by the humane society of the united states, has raised the reward in this terrible case to $4,000. >> bandaged, groggy from surgery needed to clean a deep gash over her right eye. trooper looks just awful. but she is a survivor. last friday, washington humane society officer eve russell pulled the 2 1/2-year-old pit bull out of a dumpster in the 4200 block of the 9th southeast. severely wounded dog had been tightly duct taped into a trash bag. she survived by chewing a hole and sticking her head out. officer russell is frying tryin

metro, subway syems now an airline will give it a try. je blue, $599 monthly pass giving customers unlimited flights. pass holders can book flights as soon as three days before they want to travel. visit any of the airlines 56 destinations in u.s., caribbean and south america. the pass is on sale now through august 21st. it will be valid for travel between september 8th and october 8th. a new natural sweetener

hitting store shelves. sugar substitute is called truvia. some say it is sweeter than sugar and has no calories. but there may also be downsides. truvia from an extract of the stevia blant b stevia, plant, 250 times sweeter than sugar. >> it is the hottest new sweetener coming out. and everyone is very excited about it. because it is all-natural. and it comes from a plant. you can actually find this plant at your local farmer's markets. >> but there could be a downside. some studies have raised concerns about the use of the sweetener and impaired kidney function, fertility and blod pressure. the company says its researc refutes those findings. group of hotel workers from our area won a powerball lottery prize. a pool of 27 employees at washington hilton played powerball last week. turns out they matched all but one number and won $10,000.

nonetheless, folks at tropical prediction center are still thinking that it will become a tropical storm. but you can see that the distance from miami and even going forward in the next few days, certainly out over the waters. and no threat whatsoever. no threat whatsoever to the island. as we know a lot can happen. look at the temperatures around the country today. south texas continuing to suffer. 104 degrees. corpus christi has now had 36 days in a row of the temperature 95 or higher. today, a record in corpus christi. 100 degrees. boy, do you have friend down there. telling you about the terrible drought. also, all of the -- all of the heat. little area of low pressure off the coast. keep us under moisture. that's the reason i think our temperatures will be a little below average. because overnight tonight. we'll continue to see temperatures into the 80s. then tomorrow morning. you get up and head out.

they won't play long. several of them, won't play at all. it will be a chance for the young guys, veterans, fighting for a roster spot to make an early impression on the coaches while they're in the line of fire. so to speak. also the first time the new look redskins defense will face live competition. and that is actually wearing another uniform. and haynesworth won't play. and get some snaps. first pro game. they're a couple of the reasons that some think this could be, perhaps, the best defense in the nfl. defensive coordinator says let's not get too eited just yet. >> typical of people to get something new. and go gaga over the new toy. and forget about all the things they have had all along. i try to stay away from that. i try and be respectful and in the things i have had and be appreciative of the things we added on. what we are going to do is add the guys on. see if we can get better. we always try to get better.
