for football fans. just a few hours from now washington will suit up for the first preseason game. >> it a battle of the beltways with the team facing the ravens up in baltimore. as news4's megan mcgrath reports, there cautious optimism among fans that this is going to be a good year. >> reporter: fans have gotten a feel for the team during training camps. but tonight is the first time that they get to see the redskins really reply. the skins take on the ravens in their first preseason game in baltimore tonight. fans will be watching closely. hoping to gain insight into the way the season will go. >> a lot of optimism. you know, i'm -- there's a lot of hope but we -- we have to see, you know. if they can keep the injuries away, i think we will be all right. >> preseason is an opportunity for them to see what their strengths and weaknesses are and adjust. like i said we will see some of the strengths and probably some of the weaknesses. >> reporter: last year's season was a bit disappointing.

a strong start sizzled and taking the skins out of playoff contention and fans are hoping for more this time around. >> hopefully the redskins, redskins fans. and i'm hoping for the best this season. hopefully we will get a chance to see some of the new backup quarterbacks and hopefully the offensive line is good, too,s well. it would be a good chance to see what happens tonight. >> if any -- look okay on defense and offense, we will have a good season, think i. if they don't. >> i'm expecting success. i don't know if we are going to go to the super bowl good i think we will do pretty good. i think we will make the playoffs if we push hard enough. >> reporter: while cautiously optimistic about the regular season all of the fans we spoke to today believe the redskins will beat the ravens tonight and kickoff is at 7:30. in northwt, megan mcgrath, news4. >> hakem dermish joins us to tell us who we will see and who we won't tonight. >> a lot of veterans will not play.

a lot of the rookies. a chance for them to step up and make their presence known tonight. clinton portis and albert haynesworth will not play tonight. however, there will be plenty of eyes on backup quarrback brennan and todd collins. for now, colt may be the people's choice but what matters is the coaches' choice. collin is the number two qb. brennan is in his second year with the redskins and still in the growth and learning stage as an nfl quarterback. jim zorn will have a very tough decision to make. it is likely, though, he will stick with this guy, 15-year veteran collins who has been through this before and welcomes the competition. >> every year, you know, it is the same in the sense that you know there will be competition. somebody playing better than you, you know, then they are going to probably, you know, move up. my outlook has always again to

prepare like a starter and prepare and be able to play at that level. you are not playing for a backup spot. you know, you are mott chasing, you know, the number two spot, number tee spot. everyone should have the mindset they are trying the play at the level of a starter and then when you have taunt to play, then you can, you know, produce like one. >> no security in this job. either you are moving up or down. and right now, i'm a third string quarterback. the only place you can go is up from here. it is a big deal for me because, you know, obviously i want to prove myself and be in this league a long time. and this is my first step. it is hard to compete with collins who has been here for 15 years and has seen everything and knows it already. i have learn to that. this is my second year. that's the stuff i'm trying to progress on and get better at, knowledge of the game. >> colt brennan with the perfect attitude. expect to see thomas and kelly tonight. it is a real test to see which guy will step up as a possible starter. keep your eye on that position and also brian orakpo, rookie

77-year-old harry tollow hit a jetty with his boat. it happened last night. he was boating near the mouth of rock hold creek when he hit a stone jetty. investigators are still trying to find out what went wrong. a 12-year-old boy continues to fight for his lifre this afternoon following a serious car crash in german town. this happened late yesterday at the intersection of ridge road and morning star drive. four young people were in a c trying to turn left when they were rear ended by a pickup truck. all four were taken to the hospital. the 12-year-old in critical condition. the driver of the pickup truck was not injured. today was the first day for new teach in d.c. public schools. the all-day event took place here at the columbia heights education campus in north west. the new teachers were introduced to the resources they can use as they face their first year teaching in d.c. the first-year teachers will return tomorrow for act second day of orientation. the union representing metro drivers is calling foul on a

than 200 out-of-control wildfires. the so-lled goose wildfire near bernie jumped to 6,000 acres last night. cooler overnight temperatures helped. the firefighters say the dense fire and brush are making it very difficult to get a handle on the blaze. the officials say the wildfire is only 10% contained. more than 23,000 acres have burned in the region so far. strong storms caused some serious flooding in portsmouth, virginia, yesterday. the area got more than 4 1/2 inches of rain in a single hour. the rain forest forced many business tows close and catching many people off guard. some people had on wade through knee-deep water as they left work. it forced the closing of major roads and tunnels because of flooding or debris. >> four inches. we haven't had a drought here, in the norfolk area, pretty flat. they had a stationary front down there. outside right now, we have some clouds, some sunshine. not bad at all.

our current temperature and because we have -- little area of storminess off the coast, our winds have been more from the north. and so our dew points dropped. our rainfall,ven when we look at the flooding down in norfolk, since june 21, when this pattern changed, we are heading close to four inches below average rainfall. 86 right here in washington. look at new york city. 71 degrees because not so much to do dew point but they have the rains up there and when -- dew points in the low 60s, that's not bad at all for august. our index now is 87 degrees. there's the wavy weather front. a series of low pressures. that's the reason for those rains. and as a matter of fact, the reason, also, for the rains not too far away. here we are in washington. d as i showed you earlier, there is baltimore and right downtown baltimore right now, there's the moderate rain showers. a ttle bit of a wet field. those will drift out by game time. as you can see, down in the norfolk area and williamsburg

a police chase in droypt wound up with a fiery dramatic crash this morning. take a look. it is all caught on video. police were chasing the pickup truck when it got into an intersection and caught by a minivan. the collision sent the truck crashing into a utility poll. it flipped and burst into flames, as you saw. the driver was killed. police say they chased the vehicle because it had been reported stolen. did a brazilian host help boost ratings for his reality show by contracting for murder? those are the allegations he is facing. peter alexander has this story. >> reporter: for nearly 20 years, host wallace souza's crime fighting reality show was brazil's version of must see tv. led by his front man the show's crews were famously first on the scene. often before police. capturing exclusive and graphic video of violent crimes. sometimes as they happened.

the latest data shows a significant increase in the number of staph infection. medical records from 20% of all community hospitals in the u.s. that represents roughly 8 million hospital stays. they found skin and soft tissue jumped 30% between 2000 and 2004. most of the infections were caused by mirsa, dangerous form of drug resistant staph bacteria. the infections turned up in younger patients and patients that had not recent lip undergone surgery. which used to be a major cause of mirsa infections. this could explain why some people feel just fine despite

getting just a few hours of sleep. researchers at the university of california of san francisco say there's evidence that those people have a genetic predisposition that allows them to function normally on little sleep. they were able to identify a gene that's linked to sleep rhythms. when they genetically engineered mice to have this gene they found the mice stayed awake, too. encouraging news in the fight against cancer. new research shows fewer people are dying from cancer. researchers in michigan say over the past 30 years, cancer deaths have dropped among all age ranges. although cancer diagnoses continue to grow, the news is encouraging because it means better screenings methods and treatments are saving lives. cancer deaths among young people are down the most around 25%. wonderful day today. let's get the football forecast now for tonight. >> hey, bob. >> we had nice weather, pat and jim. look at the radar. i want to take you right up there to baltimore.
