5:05 pm
about it and talk about it at the barbershop the next day. cost you the ball game, talk about it for a week. some of the young guys, reality of it, they are actually lined up and in the nfl football day, mom and grandmom will watch them. i think the pressure is starting to close in on them. no doubt about it. some worse than others. but it is a natural progression. and they don't let their fear or nervousness handcuff them, it will be very -- they can use i and help them, you know, prepare to play. >> i would see big yellow -- i haven't seen the big yellow streak on their pants so i think they are all right. hopefully they won't wear the white pants during the game. >> does it get that bad? >> i remember -- i just remember my coach saying that to me my first year at college. you know, he's like -- wearing those white pants. make sure you go to the bathroom, you know, before you go out there. i'm like -- okay. he's like you will get all those nervous, 110,000 people yelling

5:07 pm
there, at game time, i think pretty good football weather. some clouds but also since the sun doesn't set until 58, it will be partly sunny. 28 degrees, reasonably tl comfortable for early exhibition. preseason football. and our temperature right here in washington right now is 86. even with the showers you can see it is 81 in baltimore. overnight tonight, later on, temperatures will dip into the high 60s to the low 70s. i will tell you about the upcoming next friday and a look at beach and boating, too. >> thanks, bob. what about game day traffic? >> ash lip linder joins us live with that. >> hey, guys. well, we are starting to see a lot more volume on the roadway. that's for sure. we have also got -- to deal with two things. two-pronged issue today. in addition to the game day traffic, we got plain old nasty summertime traffic. this here is the beltway. inner loop of it is going to be very slow. lineup begins at the dulles toll road and this is the pace headed towards 95 in college park.
5:08 pm
pace does not get better. if you are taking 95 or 295, here is what you have and in store for you. 95 is pretty much jammed leading the beltway headed towards to 12. then it is going to be slow from 32 past route 100 and then from 195 there is an accident just before 695. that blocks the left lane. as far as the bw parkway is concerned it is not necessarily a better alternative from the beltway headed up towards 175, it is pretty much slow going through that area. the good news is no big accident to report on the bw parkway. that may be your best option if you are headed up towards the game today. wendy and jim, back to you. >> lot of people out there. ashley, thank you. football fever is heating up in the washington area tonight. fans are excited about a new season and a new start for the skins. derek warpd continues our battle of the beltway team coverage live from balance more. >> of course, this is the preseason and does not go into any standings and doesn't count. for bragging rights. that does not do anything to

5:15 pm
that news. joining us now is cnbc reporter matt nesto. matt, sometimes it feels like we are getting mixed messages that one minute we hear that the jobless benefits claims jumped one week but we also hear unemployment rate generally looking better. can you interpret this for us? >> this is cash this is like psychology. i'm on my couch and we live day to point to data point. this is exactly what we had today. you are referring to last week's monthly jobs report. the nonforeign payrolls, the unemployment rate slip down a bit. that's the job creation or the -- in this case, the pace that we are losing jobs on a monthly basis. of course, every single week, we get the same -- numbers in terms of how many people are filing initial jobless claims. which is what we got today. every thursday and the number was slightly worse than expected. a volatile number, weekly number. economists tend to want to look at these things over moving average, four-week average.
5:16 pm
and, you know, give or take. the number was more or less in line where we have seen it and you look at some of those claims that continuing claims number and at about 6 million has been pretty steady. not showing a real jump in improvement. >> add the retail sales figure that h.montic month. yot tbuu ge theu t consumers are feeling a little t brte in general so what --r so wt --ha hoow w de ietntprer this? >> here you have data from july and headlines from august and maybe the two haven't quite synced up yet. july sales definitely did not meet expectations. we tend to look at them two ways. total sales down about .1 of a peent. if you back out auto sales, negative .6 of a%. analysts looking for a slight growth and didn't get it. it was offset, however, by stronger than expected results from the biggest, baddest retailer of them all, fill in the blank. walmart which, by the way, dropped the hyphen today between
5:17 pm
wal and mart which i think is good. minus sign is like a hyphen. maybe they got rid of the negativity. the stock was song and that tempered the negativity in the retail sector today. because walmart accounts for some astronomical sum proportion, if you will, of what the u.s. retail slice really is. >> okay. i'm also hearing now that great bottles of wine are going for cheaper prices. that's a very good sign and that will help consumers spending. thank you, matt nesto. we will talk to you later. strong storms made for a tricky commute down in portsmouth, virginia, wednesday. heavy rain and flooding forced many businesses to close, catching many folks off guard. some had to wade through knee-deep water as they left work. the rain snarled traffic causing major roads and tunnels to close due to flooding or debris. meet meets say the area got more than 4 1/2 inches of rain in just one hour.
5:18 pm
that is a wallop there. >> one spot. overall, it was still three, four inches of rain. not as par south yesterday. we showed that yesterday. outside today, while we were seeing some showers right over baltimore, we were watching our own sky outside. do we have our time lapse? i guess not. take my word for it. the sky was beautiful out there today. >> we saw it. we will back you up on that, bob. >> i promise i will show it to you at 6:00. outside now, our current temperature is at 86 degrees. our average is still 87. 86, our current temperature. look at the temperatures around the east now. 67 up to our north. there we are. in boston. 70s. one 90 around miami right now. here we are with the dew points not too bad. and look at the heat index. remember earlier in the week, it was up around 90 degrees. got a combination with a little wave in the atmosphere. old weather front off the coast and along it, areas of low
5:19 pm
pressure and that's the reason, that's the reason for the heavy rains. take a look at doppler. you can see where that area of rain showers, the one leftover rain shower is. it moved through baltimore. up to our north. there it is. moving right along at trying to come down i-95. now it finally moved to the south. folks who will be driving up to baltimore. it will be clearing out for the game. around us in washington, our rainfall still way below average. nothing going on. there's what's left of those rains down around the virginia beach area. today the heavier rain showers are more up into pennsylvania. still have a flash flood watch out for parts of new jersey. here is what will be going on. overnight tonight, look at the clouds still lingering to our south. we will continue to see clouds, maybe some showers for you folks out around the eastern shore. en area of low pressure will be still moving along there. high pressure to our north. in between, it will be a light north to northeasterly breeze. it will keep us warm away from
5:20 pm
humidity. temperatures tomorrow will be in the 80s. for this evening, partly cloudy. and really rather pleasant. with temperatures into the low 80s. tomorrow when you get up and head out there will be clouds around. humidity won't be too, too bad. it is august still overall. temperatures tomorrow, some spots for you folks towards the shenandoah valley will be into the 60s. then tomorrow overall i think we will see partly sunny skies which will continue to give us temperatures reasonably comfortable, mid to highpr 80s. if you are headed out for rebeheths s y ie waacit looks around the bay. not the breez we ead last .e ig ler winds. little bit of pretty good igsailg weather. nsofsu, nehilo ithink, onwithne breeze, ly breeze,sh oroneez bere a ho city, temperatures on saaytu7,rd 0s. water temper70s. right now looks like nice beach weekend. even though they had quite a few
