>> well, there was a lot of chat because she asserted in -- she was asked a question and there's some dispute about whether or not the translation was correct. but right after bill clinton swooped down and brought the hostages back, they asked her kind of what she thought of that and she basically said i am secretary of state, not my husband. and some people said that she had a mini meltdown and got kind of, you know, cranky about this. and that it was pure sexism that got asked. and so going back and forth on this. i said, you know, guys have bad days, too. so it could b a misunderstanding or maybe she just got tired of people saying we like you but your husband is really the cool guy. >> who would like to hear that? ran up a couple of huge restaurant bills that have her in hot water back home.

one of the bills was here in town. right? >> absolutely. you know, we probably wouldn't have heard about this because no one paid any attention. she was here on july 30th and met with the president. and then she andpleo pe wtenev to bobby van steakhous for dinner. we didn't pay any attention to it. three days later she went to new york and had a dinner where they had champagne and caviar, spent $20,000. this became a scandal back home. then we found out that she had paid $15,000, lobster, steak, fine wines at bobby van's. the bill aasanom w by a woman that opened up her purse and pulled out $15,000 in cash. which is -- you know, the kind of thing that tends to catch one's eye. the name bobby van's steakhouse is all over the philippines right now. which i think is probably a good thing for tourism. >> exactly. helping our local economy but who carries that wad in their purse? that's amazing. >> not me. >> president obama's half sister

80% of ericans with it are women. the drug that's an injection given twice a year and it could help those who can't tolerate daily medication. but while the fda advisory committee recommended the drug as twice a year treatment, it didn't fully recommend it for preventi ien iat e el pthanwon. the panel voted against also approving the drug for patients with breast or prostate cancer whose treatment reduces bone mass. new experiments with mice could lead to rakethrough disease treatments for people. scientists are creating replacement cell that may eventually help to treat those suffering spinal cord injuries, parkinson's disease, diabetes, other problems. by inserting a single skin cell into a mouse embryo and into a living mouse. researchers were able to reprogram normal cells so they worked just like embree on theic stem cells. those are no embryos used. animal rights groups oppose the research. additional crews have been

deployed across the state of california to help gain control on a series of wildfires that continue to grow. in the stan cruz mountains flames forced more than 2,000 people to leave their homes now. the blaze began wednesday evening. and has grown now to more than six-square miles. so far it only damaged two small structures but threatening 1,000 others. no injuries have been reported. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. back here at home, the wind was perfect. >> relatively nice summer days people can get outside. we could use a little more rain. we don't want it to rain necessarily on the weekend. we have five other days of the week. monday through friday we can pick up on the needed rainfall. not so much on your saturdays and sundays. a live picture over downtown washington. the temperature is 85 degrees. our dew point is65 degrees. a light east wind at only about 5 to 6 miles per hour. and since june 21, look at that,

only 2.25 inches of rain. almost 50 days. so it has been a very dry stretch around here indeed. temperatures around the rest of the east are mostly in the 80s. 86 in buffalo. 78 in boston, one of the cool spots. 83 degrees in raleigh. ra showers in and around much of eastern north carolina. satellite review, old weather front just sort of hanging out across the carolinas. focusing mechanism for a lot of showers and thunderstorms down there. high pressure to our northeast. that's the reason we have the east to northeasterly wind and will keep us out of the 90s today and oucht 90s tomorrow as well. gradually that air of high pressure will move away and allow warming trend in here as we get towards sunday and monday. all right. out we go into the tropics. things starting to get a little bit more active. labor day weekend is statistically the most active time of the tropics. this tropical wave out here, the hurricane center keeping a very ose eye on that. and as that has the best likelihood to develop into a tropical system. it is over 3,000 miles away from the u.s. we are not going to have to worry about that a while.

a few more areas of disturbed weather over the bahamas and another one in the eastern gulf of mexico that will need to be watched over the next couple of days. nonetheless, nothing brewing in the short term. so if you are headed out to rehoboth or ocean city weekend, you are going to have good weather for that. futurecast shows a few dying showers. mainly in southern and southeastern virginia. fading away during the overnight hours tonight. tomorrow nice mix of clouds and sunshine. and temperatures fairly typical for this time of the year. mid to upper 80s tomorrow. again, better rain chances the further south you go. st. mary's county, lower parts of the eastern shore. might pick up a sprinkle over the weekend. steady rain showers are not in the for anywhere in the mid atlantic until you get all the way from virginia beach southward to the outer banks of south carolina. 88 degrees for a hh temperature around here tomorrow. plans for your friday evening, partly cloudy and warm. temperatures will stay in the low to mid 80s for the rest of your evening plans. then by tomorrow morning, just a few fair weather clouds drifting on by. wakeup temperatures in the 60s in the suburbs to low 70s in town and by the bay. tomorrow lots of sunshine.

insurance companies charge the sick. that's the message president barack obama brought to montana today. he's on a four-state tour to his health care reform plan. an increasingly contentious topic across the country. >> reporter: the president hielf out in montana today which is out west but as two democratic senators said the fight is fierce and you have seen all of these town halls. many in maryland and it has been kind of tough on democrats. but on president barack obama today, not surprisingly nobody got in his face. but it did get some tough questions. the president's aides say the president has been itching to deal with the toughest of questions. number one, they say he is convinced health care reform insurgent and doable. number two, he's convinced a lot of the so-called tough questions are really based on misconceptions. didn't hear any misconceptions alleged today. but the president did get the

core question which is how are we going to afford all of this and here is some of what happened in montana. >> if i'm writing a check to my local church, i don't know why uncle sam should be giving me a bigger t break than the person that makes less money than me because that donation means just as much. if we jt did that alone, just that change alone, for people making more than $250,000, that alone would pay for the health care we are talking about. >> let's clarify a little bit. because it is, frankly, for the president and a lot of the people in the audience, lot of us at home and actually in my position to talk about the real issues versus the rumors. the question was how do you pay for this upgrade in health care for everybody? and for insuring 40 million to 50 million people, a president calls it about 47 million who currently don't have insurance. the president's answer today to a question that read all we get is bull and how are you going to pay for this? you said you wouldn't raise our taxes, mr. president.

question delivered with deference and respect. the president said, look, two-thirds are going to get by cost cutting. that's what he says. it is debatable. the rest of it, he says, i'm going to raise taxes on but not in a way that violates my campaign promise. which was, the president said, noto raise taxes on people making at or under $250,000 a year. he said for people like himself who make more, he said a bit more, and for everybody else, he says he can raise taxes not breaking h promise and make that extra one-third of the amount which he says about $30 billion a year, that's over ten years, to make up the one-third we have to may more for, two-thirds in savings and he says it will all work. and nobody booed. pat and jim, back to you. >> certainly a tamer audience than many members of congress had been seeing in recent days. steve handelsman live on capitol hill. new dramatic video of that mid air crash involving a

sightseeing helicopter and a single engine plane over the hudson river is giving investigators important clues about what caused the collision. nbc news obtained this tape recorded by an italian tourist. he zooms in on the helicopter and then the plane enters the picture, appearing to hit the chopper from behind on the right side. pieces of both aircraft fall below into the river. and investigators are holding the video while and hoping lit provide crucial clues about how two experienced pilots could have crashed into oech other on a clear day. a smart, fearless leader who stood up for the voiceless. that's how family and friends remembered eunice kennedy shriver today. a funeral for the sister of former president john f. kennedy took place in hyannis port. hyannis, massachusetts, this morning. the private service took place at the st. francis xavier catholic church. family members, including daughter maria shriver, served as pallbearers. eunice shriver is probably best known for founding the special olympics.

actual class that he would teach. and get this. a woman in california says she was being hounded by her county to register her dog. the problem, her dog is a stuffed animal. apparently the mix-up all began during a random check for unlicensed dogs after it realized its mistake the animal control office apologized and said she wouldn't have to register her stuffed animal pet after all. another taser incident has a police department under scrutiny. this time a woman in syracuse, new york, claims an officer used the device on her during a traffic stop. not once but twice. and for no good reason, she says. tamron hall has the story. >> i handed in my license and registration and as he started to walk back towards his car, i got out of my car, under the impression or hoping that he was going to show me the camera tape. he asked me to get back in the car and then he pulled out his taser and said i was under arrest.

i said, don't do this in front my kids. >> reporter: she was in the car with two of her children, ages 5 and 15 when she was pulled over and ticketed for talking on her cell phone and speeding. police officer shawn andrews also charged her with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. and tasered her twice. >> and the first shot jolted me and i was trying to get back in the car again. because i was scared. and then he yanked me away again and that's when he tasted me and i went down on the ground. >> reporter: harmon claims theins department is an example of police brutality. in a statement to nbc news, the sherf's office says they can't comment because of the lawsuit. but the department says, quote, an internal investigation of the incident involving deputy andrews is and has been under review. >> these weapons, they are weapons, they are so easy to use and easy to abuse. officers are using this weapon -- in circumstances where

live ammunition would never be allowed. and people are dying after having been tasered. >> reporter: that's what happened in 2007 when a 40-year-old man was tasered at the vancouver airport in canada. the incident caused an international uproar following his death. back in june, police in texas tasered a 72-year-old great grandmother after pulling her over for speeding. she was not seriously injured. >> don't tase me, bro. >> reporter: the infamous tasering involving a student andrew meyer in 2007. after audra harmon was tasered she was taken to the hospital. >> it felt like i it was an electrical shock going through and you i had no control over anything. >> that was tamron hall reporting. that's "news4 at 4:00." thanks for being with us.
