officials believe that some people have gotten their hands on a whole bunch of professional quality fireworks. on july 4, residents of northeast washington saw the sky light up with what looked like real fireworks like the kind used on the national mall. dozens and dozens of them launched from backyards and alleyways. >> it actually looked like we were on the mall for the fireworks display. the rockets shooting up in the air, and it was really dangers. >> las night they evacuate yated homes in 49th and meade streets after a u.s. postal service mailbox exploded jus before 10:00 p.m. sending dangerous shrapnel flying. >> that's scary because it's right by my house. i thought hy couse was on fire. i was scared. >> investigators later determined the blast was cause birthday i a professional grade

fireworks show. just prior to independence day d.c. mayor adrian fenty joined by fire chief dennis ruben renewed a call for d.c. and neighboring montgomery and prince george's counties in banning all fireworks. >> we really need to rid the community, the general untrained public who doesn't read the instructions of these devices. >> ward seven council member says since the pyrotechnic antics she thinks it's time for new fireworks lawses. >> there's too many illegal fireworks going on. i'm going to relook at the ban for the district. >> reporter: investigators don't know where the illegal fireworks are coming from. they think possibly mail order, possibly from out of state. for your information, in the district, fireworks that fly or explode are illegal. craig, back to you. >> jackie bensen on the natio l

national. thank you. two dos have been diagnosed with canine influenza. it isn't contagious to humans but it can make mets very sick. another 29 dogs have been exposed. they'll be quarantined as a precaution. dog's symptoms include coughing, wheezing and other o respiratory problems. michael vick sat down today. he's the newest philadelphia eagle. there were tough questions and certainly more to come. dan hellie with more on this story. man, michael vick in nfc east, huh? >> it's surprising. to turn out at the eagles practice facility was the largest in years. nearly 100 media members and 200 camera hearing a soft-spoken and remorseful michael vick out on the field. he's back on the field after sevening 18 months in federal

he's denied fathering her 18-month-old daughter. but according to news he'll indeed admit he's the father. eunice kennedy shriver was remembered today as a fearless warrior for the voiceless. she was also remembered as an unconventional woman who smoked cuban cigars and played tackle football. a torch-bearing olympic procession was led in front of the catholic church as family and friends gathered for a private funeral mass. maria shriver high lighted the service with her mother's adventures and she brought the fwakterring to tears reading a poem she wrote with her m. she was buried not far from the family compound. we're learning more about the details that happened moments before the deadly crash over the hudson river. a single-engine plane struck a

helicopter. the ntsb says the controller who cleared that plane for departure got on the phone to make a personal call. that controller told the plane to contact the newark airport but failed to tell the pilot about air traffic in the area. a newark controller who did see the traffic never heard from the pilot and told teterboro to warn the ane. the teterboro was still on the phone with that personal phone call at the time. two other attempts to contact the plane were unsuccessful. nine people were killed in that collision. the teterboro controller and his supervisor are on administrative leave pending an faa investigation. overnight fog and light winds have weakened a wildfire in california tonight. 300 firefighters are expected to join the 700 who already are battling that blaze. the fire started burning in the santa cruz mountains wednesday. so far the fire has only damaged two small buildings but more

told me it with us a nice evening. in georgetown, our high temperature today, reasonable humidity too. 87 degrees. the last time, folks we had a rainy day, may 3rd. high temps today, 87 here, down to our south into the 80s. only a few spots into the 90s. look at brownsville. 97 degrees. it's not the temperature so much but the terrible, terrible drought that continues. the exceptional drought. now the 37th day in a row in corpus christi. if you have friends in corpus christi, ta talk to the folks in south texas. 30 days in a row of 95 or higher. today was 97 in corpus christi. and there's the weather front along the east coast and that's been the focus of showers. thundershowers to our south right around us in washington. there's nothing going on. there's where the few showers

are. if you're heading down to the outer banks, there may be a few. po portsmouth virginia. 79 degrees. that will be the high temperatures the next couple of days. the little ripples will come around the east coast. that will keep some fresh ocean air in and around us but also keep it cool out on the beaches. tomorrow around here, 88 degrees. when you get up in the morning temperatures will start out in the 60s and low 70s. there could be patchy fog, especially if it creeps over the mountains an out in the shenandoah valley. temperatures, mid to high 80s. then as we get into sunday, near 90 but comfortable. reasonable 90 degrees. we just went through 97 earlier in the week. then the low 90s. and the important thing is it really won't be until wednesday,
