for tropical storm claudette at this hour. it's closing in on the florida panhandle. good sunday to you. i'm craig melvin. claudette is packing powerful winds and bringing heavy rains to the florida coast. people who live there are also keeping their eye on another storm brewing in the atlantic. chuck bell joining us from storm center 4. >> the storm we're going to have to watch later on in the week is going to be tropical storm, probably going to be hurricane bill. in the short term we need to worry about tropical storm claudette. winds gusting in excess of 40 miles per hour. you can see a lot of travel troubles down there. if you have flight problems tomorrow that will bring you to atlanta, birmingham, pensacola or mobile, flights they be impacted. from pensacola to the very tip,

the southernmost extent, you can see on the infrared satellite imagery a compact circulation with the storm moving other far central and western parts of the florida panhandle. this storm packing a lot of rain. apalachicola. over about the next 12 to 24 hours this storm will go inland leaving a lot of wind and rain in its wake. hard hit will be southern alabama, southwestern georgia and southeastern ssissippi. the latest on our weather and the forecast track for bill coming up in main weather. from day one, president obama said fixing health care would be his top domestic prior to. he's been out west the past few days sightseeing with his family and peddling his health care plan. looks like the president is ready to compromise on what many consider the most contingent part of the plan. the president's western

adventure continued day. the first family's stop at the grand canyon was, perhaps, the perfect metaphor as president obama continues trying to bridge the gap over health care. yesterday at a rare weekend town hall meeting in colorado, the president continued trying to knock down wild rumors about h plan. >> things like we want to set up death panels to pull the plug on grandma. i mean, come on. >> president obama also insists he's not pushing government run health care. in a "new york times" op-ed piece he writes, i don't believe anyone should be in charge of your health care decisions but you and your doctor. the alternative to the public option favored by some in the senate is a government influenced but not run co-op. a plan authored by north dakota democrat kent conrad. >> the fact of the matter is, there are not the votes in the united states senate for the public option. there never have been. so to continue to chase that rabbit, i think, is just a

wasted effort. >> meanwhile, some democrats are talking about going it alone. >> it appears to be that the republicans are just not going to cooperate no matter what. >> others say a solution to a problem as large as health care should be a bipartisan one. >> what we have agreed to is that we are going to be ready when we're ready. and we are working. we hope to be able to reach a conclusion by the middle of september. >> the president maintains his final plan will make health insurance available for most of those who are currently uninsured, provide people with more options and close some loopholes for insurance companies. president obama also insists it can be done without adding to the deficit over the next decade. one day after helping to free an american prisoner held in myanmar, virginia senator jim webb is expressing hope for better relations with that country. america john yettaw flew to

bangkok with webb today. >> he's not a well man. he had a medical incident this morning when they read him his orders of deportation. he's now undergoing a thorough medical review here in a hospital. soon he will be able to return to his family. >> while in myanmar, webb also met with suu kyi, fighting for democracy in her country. suu ni swarings the end of her house arrest but will now have to serve an additional 18 months as a result of yettaw's stay. back here tonight, district police continue looking for the person or people who shot seven people at a bus stop yesterday. it happened in the minnesota avenue metro station in northeast. investigators say at least one gunman walked up and opened fire on a huge crowd at the bus shelter. many of the people had just come from a go-go party a couple of blocks away. a nonviolent advocate wept to the neighborhood today to see if he could be of any help. >> as i did that, some guys pulled right up, right then and

there, and, you know, pointed a gun at me and clicked it. but it didn't go off. so right then and there, that tells you that people are going around doing senseless things in their thinking. we definitely need to work on their thinking. >> all seven victims are expected to recover. budget cuts are coming to counties across maryland. they could take a serious bite out of things like public safety, colleges and trpg. maryland governor martin o'malley broke the news to county officials in ocean city this weekend. the costs are expected to add up to $250 million to close a huge budget gap. state officials aren't providing details on the cut so far but do say the cuts will be painful. flu fears in our area, not just swine flu anymore, either. this time it involves man's best friend. a dog flu outbreak is shutting down adoptions at an animal shelter in our area. darcy spencer joining us tonight with that story. she's got details on what happened and some tips on how to

protect your pet. >> the fairfax animal shelter is not adopting out any dogs for now because of that outbreak. local vets are warning owners to watch their dogs to see if they're showing signs of illness. >> that's it. good boy. >> reporter: at the mason district dog park, there are lots of animals playing and gettin some exercise. but what's on the minds of owners is dog flu. an outbreak of the illness has caused the dog section of the fairfax animal shelter to close. >> i think it's a good thing. if it's something going on right now, it's important they take the right safety precautions. >> we're a little concerned. i started thinking whether i should bring the dogs to the dog park or not. because maybe it's not good. but decided the dogs needed energy. they needed to get that energy out. >> reporter: canine flew is not deadly and cannot be spread to humans. but it can cause dogs to become severely ill. >> i come up to the dog park all the time. i throw the ball. they get different balls. so i just want to make sure that

they're -- if there's a vaccination, that i'll get the vaccination for the dogs. >> it is a concern. but not really. he loves it here. it outweighs any concern we have for him. >> reporter: the shelter has confirmed two cases of dog flu. another 25 are showing symptoms. >> each day the number was compounded to the point that we had to take our mnen knel and make it the isolation kennel. >> one local animal clinic already had a dog die from the canine flu. veterinarians say infected dogs don't always show symptoms. >> you know, you can have a doggy walking down the street and sniff a fire hydrant or something. other dogs can come by and sniff the same one and he can get the virus. >> reporter: to limit your pet's exposure, avoid taking your dog to places where dogs gather. ask the kennel if they've had cases of illness before leavi anur dog there. ekd se veterinarian care if ord dog shows signs of irspreatory ily atlness. now, the shelter does plan to

two russian air force jets collided today while rehearsing for an air show near moscow. one of the jets crashed into houses below. a woman on the ground was seriously injured. the fighter pilots were members of the elite russian knights. preliminary reports blame pilot error. police in milwaukee have arrested a man for allegedly attacking the mayor of milwaukee with a pipe.

police say it happened as mayor tom barrett left the state fair last night. he heard a woman screaming for help. he was hit on the head with a metal pipe as he called 911. >> we seen the guy -- one guy down on the sidewalk in a pool of blood. and then we told police we think that the other guy jumped over the fence. and headed that way. it was a domestic thing. >> and it was the mayor of milwaukee? >> yeah. i didn't know that at the time. that's a shock. >> the 20-year-old suspect ran away after the attack. but police arrested him early this morning after an intense search of the area. the mayor's recovering from head and hand injuries tonight. still ahead here tonight, a teenager with an unusual summer project. he just wrapped up an 1,100 mile journey on foot. it was a beautiful weekend. will the sunny weather hang around for

organizers say a faircation is a great idea. >> we are trying to cut back. this is a fabulous opportunity to spend some time with the family at a reasonable cost. >> we come out here, spend 20 bucks the whole day. animals, rides, free crafts, all that great stuff.

>> reporter: there are some extras that will cost you if you decide to pay the price. that includes the rides, the games and of course all that great food. but for the frugal fair goer, kids free today tomorrow. anyone under 12 gets in free until 4:00. the fair will run until saturday. a florida teenager has a unique summer vacation experience. david ashby wanted to draw attention to the nation's 1.5 million homeless children. so the 14-year-old decided to walk from orlando to the district. the middle schooler's 1,100 mile journey came to an end today right in front of the white house. it took about a month and a half. he says it's been well worth it. >> a child labor law, they can't help themselves. most shelters have to have a guardian to sign themselves in. i decided to work on helping

mark at 67. heat index of 80. light south breeze at six miles per hour. the very latest on tropical storm claudette, 68 miles east-southeast of pensacola, florida. maximum sustained winds at about 50 miles per hour. this storm is going to weaken considerably as soon as it comes on shore. the forecast from the hurricane center has it on shore by about sunrise tomorrow morning, then moving into alabama and eventually raining itself out. could be a lot of rain in southern portions of alabama and georgia not to he thinks the western part of the florida peninsula. florida panhandle. i'm going to get that straight one of these days. there's the radar. heaviest of the rains and the strongest of the winds have been right out near apalachicola, florida. here, clear skies in place. high pressure for now going to keep most of the heavy rainfall potential and most of the moistu from claudette steering off further to the west.

ohio valley, tennessee valley going to get most of the rain. that weather front will pick up the moisture and i do think we'll have a chance for showers around here later on in the week. those will e essentially be the remnants of claudette. we have to keep a close eye on tropical storm bill. a long, long way away from the united states moving off to the west-northwest. still 3,000 miles from washington, d.c. there's the five-day track from the national hurricane center. so it does bear watching for all interests along the eastern sea board for next weekend and early next week. for us, quiet weather. just hot and humid around here for the next couple of days. clear skies. cooler out in the western suburb. back down martensburg, the shenandoah valley, might even see some 50s first thing tomorrow morning. tomorrow during the day once again bright and sunny, plenty warm. very hot by a lot of folks' standards. 96 degrees for a high temperature down towards fredericksburg. enhanced rain chances towards wednesday, thursday and friday. time is ticking on a deal

guarantees are hard to back up. >> take it away. >> first, i would like to admit a mistake i made last night on this very show. i said the pga championship was over because tiger woods had a 14-0 record with the lead in mayor championships. today i was proven otherwise. the 110th golfer in the world y.e. yang upset tiger woods. remember, kids, it ain't over till it's over. things not going well for tiger from the get go. on the first hole tiger with a short birdie. not putting with precision. tiger settles for par. on 13 another makable putt for birdie. tiger was wearing red. but he wasn't awesome today. unfortunately. misses that. he's clearly just frustrated. shot of the day, though, here from y.e. yang. chipping on 14, he's a professional, gets professional results right here. it is going in for eagle.

yang with a tigerlike fist pump there. yang takes lead to 8 under. tiger putting for birdie on 14. he finally makes one. moves so 7 under. two birdies on the day to go along with five g has aon 18, y lead. his second shot from just over 200 yards away. he hits this about as good as you can. he was feeling it. stops just a few feet from the hole. one of the best shots of the tournament, bar none. yang has two putts to win. well, guess what? he only needs one. because he sinked the birdie to win the pga championship. you think he's fired up? you bet ya. he becomes the first asian born player to win a major. tiger finishes in second three shots back. for the first time in five years tiger woods goes winless in the four major tournaments. >> i didn't win today. as i said, i played well enough the entire week to win the championship, and especially
