man was murdered last night. and not discovered until officers were sent to check on his welfare about 1:00 this afternoon. the thing that has investigators somewhat puzzled at this point is that police tell us the restaurant was locked uptight when the first officers arrived and they had to force entry inside and neighbors tell us they are very upset about this. >> very nice man. very, very nice man. >> very sad. we never expect this to happen here. very nice man. >> very sad. >> reporter: police are looking into the possibility that this was a robbery. jim and eun, back to you. >> jackie bensen. we have storms rolling around out there today. bob ryan is upstairs to tell us

what's up. bob, are you there? take may word for it. there are storms rumbling around and there were some in bethesda this afternoon and other parts of maryland and in virginia. and we are told that there will be continuing thunder bumpers bumping around the rest of this evening and maybe tomorrow as well. but maybe not. bob, what's going on? >>e have some nasty cells up to our north. let me show you, first of all, where that area is. that's now north of baltimore. earlier there was a warning out for folks in anne arundel county but as you can see, that's -- diminished a lot now. that warning has gone down. but meanwhile, line of nasty cells up to the north of baltimore. there is another little patch now coming through, oh, fairfax county. it might pick off a couple of strokes of lightning and gusty winds. but at this point i think it will just be bringing in beneficial rain showers. we have been so, so dry. our temperature now in washington, 90 degrees. i think we will be getting more

showers over the next few days. showers and thundershowers. look at that heat index. and the other big story is hurricane bill. there you can see this is a great picture from the nasa aqua satellite. there's the eye, about 40 miles across. bill could become abcategory 3 hurricane in the next 24 hours. tell you more about that. also, when our heat is going to break. when i join you. back to you. >> thanks, bob. new nbc news poll out today shows that the american public is changing its mind when it come to health care reform. the polls show people are now rejecting the so-called public options and once a key element of president barack obama's health care initiative. steve handelsman has that report. >> reporter: he called it one sliver of health care reform. president obama is still fighting for the public option. government insurance. so is the health secretary today. >> we continue to support the public option that will help lower costs and give american

consumers a choice and keep private insurers honest. >> reporter: after two weeks of town halls, where the public option is a big issue, nbc news finds america has changed its mind. now opposing the public option 47% to 43%, last month it was 46% to 44% in favor. >> the public doesn't necessarily have the appetite for big governmental change in health care now. >> reporter: the republican point man on reform said "told you so." >> the bottom line of it is a public option is resented by a lot of republicans and some democrats. because we feel it is the first step towards government takeover of health care. >> reporter: team obama claims republicans like grassley are scaring the public by are spreading falsehoods. >> pull the plug on grandma. >> rorter: this was gop senator jim demint. >> you heard the president say well, maybe you are too old for a pacemaker, maybe you need painkillers. the president shouldn't be deciding what kind of health care we are going to get. >> reporter: obama aides insist

he has not lost on government insurance. >> the public option is his preferred method to add choice in competition but certain sly hoping to looking at it and discussing other idea >> reporter: which sounds to many democrats like a presidential cave-in on a key part of reform. some democrats up here are saying that they won't vote for any health care package without the public option. i'm steve handelsman, news4, capitol hill. >> president obama now plans to hold a live teleconference on health care reform with supporters thursday afternoon. on wall street, the market managed to recover se of the big losses from yesterday. stock prices are up and annists say it is due in part to some better-than-expected earnings reports from retailers and another monthly judgment in new home construction. the dow gained 82 points today. the nasdaq, up 25 points. the new york stock exchange up 84 points. columnist and tv commentator robert novak died. novak pass wade this morning here in washington.

a town in which he had been a prominent journalist for decades. today michael flynn spoke with some of those that knew novak and joins us with more. >> reporter: for the past year, novak battled brain cancer. today he is being remembered as a conservative columnist and commentator who gave us washington political scoops for almost half a century. >> he has been in very difficult shape the last couple of months. especially. it still comes as a shock. >> reporter: >> that was political commentator pat buchanan who says this is a big loss for everyone that has been following the political scene in washington, d.c. i also spoke with "meet the press's" moderator david gregory who says that, boy, if you wanted to know what was going on in the conservative community, conservative politics, you had to read robert novak's column. he was 78 years old. no word yet on funeral arrangements. back to you. >> michael flynn.

i saw several dead bodies on the ground. >> reporter: afghan security officials say at least 50 people were hurt and more than seven killed in the suicide bombing. the taliban has claimed responsibility and says that there will be more attacks leading up to elections here on thursday. this is the second time in the last several days that the taliban has been able to carry out attacks right in the center of kabul and there are great concerns, no only about voter fraud, but about turnout on election day if this level of violence continues. richardia engel, nbc news, kabu. >> there's also word tonight that a former spokesman for the taliban has been captured. a senior official in pakistan says omar was arrested by a pro-government militia in a tribal region near the border with afghanistan. omar was a spokesman for a group called the taliban movement of pakistan. he also served as a senior aide to the head of the taliban in

pakistan and believed to have been killed recently. a move today that could lead to the release of a libyan man convicted in a lockerbie bombing. he is serving a 27-year sentence for his part in the bombing of pan am flight 103 in december of 1988. the airline carried mostly americans on the way to new york explod over scotland. all 259 people onboard were killed and so were 11 more on the ground. the lawyer told the scottish court today that he's terminally ill and with advanced stage cancer and has just months to live. the judges removed a legal hurdle to his release allowing him to drop an appeal against his conviction. >> i am now instructed to abandon both his appeal against conviction and his appeal against sentence. >> in light of the circumstances before us, this court, we grant that leave.

>> reporter: libya wants him transferred to his homeland. u.s. officials are urge skop land to keep him in prison to serve out his sentence. days ago, russian officials said that they found a ship that had vanished more than two weeks ago. now they say that they knew where it was all along. the freighter was called the ctic sea. a russian naval ship reached late sunday in waters near cape verde in africa. off africa. the russian defense minister says that eight suspected hijackers have been arrested. the comment was the first official confirmation the rnc had been hijacked. the last contact with ship happened in july and as it passed through the english channel. authorities now say that they knew that the ship had been hijacked but they stayed quiet in order to bring the episode to a peaceful end. the crew of the arctic sea is reported to be in good condition. the former president of south korea's kim dae jung died in a hospital in seoul today. kim served as south korea's

president until 2003. he was awarded the nobel peace prize for his effort at reconciliation with south korea. kim had been hospitalized for several weeks with knpneumonia. he was 85 years old. a 14-year-old girl hit by two stray bullets in her house last night. we will hear from her. bob will be back with a check on your forecast.

west. these are just plain rain showers out around warrenton. in the future scan you can see how these will continue to move out to the east and we may get some more needed rains. falls church, taking anything we can get. quarter of an inch of rain. knocked down the temperatures. 79. meanwhile, out of the tropics, you see the eye staring back at you. look at the circulation. bill now is on the verge of becoming a category 3 major hurricane. winds 110 miles an hour. look at the eye. 700 miles east of the leeward island. the big threat, though, big that over the next few days will beber maude a. projected track with the uncertainty. moving up to the east of the -- east coast. but bermuda by the weekend may be an increasing threat for bill. right now, it is out over the open waters with really no problems for us. nor for the east coast. tomorrow once again, we are going to continue to see southwesterly p winds and more

total of four days outside in the last two years that we lived here. because of the stolen vehicles and the murders and the rapes, beatings. >> this is an american dream. my new home i worked so hard for and worked for, i feel like i'm living a nightmare. >> reporter: a barrage of gunfire at henson ridge last night. nine shots into this corner home. two bullets into the back of a 14-year-old girl getting out of the shower. she was treated and released at the hospital. but it was a scary night. >> how many bullets came into your house? >> nine. nine. two struck her and two was in her pillow they pulled out. if she was laying in her bed on the pillow, she would have gotten shot in her head twice. >> reporter: residents say august 8th, a 15-year-old girl was stabbed on the steps in henson ridge. there was still some blood here.

euge stacks of straw nseren w t'theatocns oer wyen'ty targets. julie carey has our report. >> reporter: the fires began to pop up around 3:00 a.m. nine different fires set in just four hours. four were start in straw bales stack ad alongside rural roads, subdivision mailboxes and one was in a trash can. all locations within a couple of miles within one another. three of the four straw stacks belonged to roy stanley who says 1 $100,000 worth went up in smoke but is more worried about what can happen next. >> my concern right now is that they catch the person it could be escalating into something that could causeersonal injury. >> reporter: a couple of miles away, kathy mason's postal carrier was kind enough to hand deliver the mail this afternoon. she got a call around 6:15 this morning from a neighbor other that her mail mailbox was on fire. >> our neighbor was leaving for work at 6:10, 6:15.

he was driving out in and the mailbox had just been set on fire. the gas can was still sitting there. >> reporter: the fire investigators are working with the montgomery county police department to try to catch the arsonist and they have some clues. >> one of the fires, we did recover a gas can. melted gas can. >> reporter: residents say they suspect teenagers might be to blame. mailbox victim kathy mason says that she doesn't think her family was targeted, though. >> i think this was random. i don't believe we have anybody angry at us. >> i'm not going to sleep sound tonight on account -- until i have this other locations, similar situations, until we find people or people that do this, i'm not going to -- nobody in the community should be sleeping. >> reporter: the fire department says it will be working with police to increase the patrols tonight and they will be at the ready in case any new fires develop. julie carey, news4, damascus. >> two of those hay bales are

still burning. what looked like a police raid at baltimore's inner harbor was a big romantic jesz tour. the politician that organized it is now facing criticism. delegate john cardin came up with an elaborate pla t propose to his girlfriend. he stage ad raid on a boat on august 7 while he was on the boat with his girlfriend. a helicopter flew overhead. at the end, cardin pulled out anygaugement ring for his girlfriend. the baltimore police commanders say that whole event was not authorized. >> the police department is not in the business of doing birthdays and bachelor parties. we are here to uphold public safety in baltimore and we use those tools for various public relations activities. but not wedding proposals for birthday parties. >> cardin has offered to reimburse the police department for the involvement of any officers and equipment in his proposal. his girlfriend, by the way, did say yes.

expect to hear more cell phone chatter at metro's busiest stations over the next two months. cell phone companies will begin installing a more expansive wireless network at designated stations. the work will take place late at night when metro rail is closed. the expanded service will allow cell phone users to make calls and send texts and surf the web starting mid october. a metro spokesperson says that they hope to have cell phone service to the entire system by 2012. coming up tonight, biggest credit card theft plot in u.s. history. we will have more on the man who police say pulled it off. south carolina's first lady jenny sanford is talking about her husband's affair.'t

federal authorities have made a change -- changed their mind about one of the points in the investigation of a mid air collision in new york city involving a small plane and a helicopter. earlier the national transportation safety board said that an air traffic controller failed to warn the plane of the helicopter in its path. now the board says that while the controller did fail to pass along the warning to the plane, the helicopter was not on the radar screen. nine people were killed in that accident. coming up in our broadcast we are going to take a look at

federal prosecutors have broken up a massive identity theft ring in southern florida. the involves information from more than a million credit and debit accounts. jane watrel has the report. >> reporter: the justice department calls it the largest case of credit and debit card debt of theft in u.s. history. 28-year-old albert gonzalez is accused of plotting to swipe 130 million accounts. the victims, ordinary shoppers. gonzalez, seemingly ordinary guy. at least according to his miami neighbo neighbors. >> you are so nice. >> reporter: there were signs of trouble. a secret service raid a few months ago raised suspicions. >> all of a sudden in the morning, there we like 15
