the only man ever convicteded in the lockerbie bombing was released today. he's back home now. police raided a store out a virginia mall authorities believe was selling counterfeit handbags. there is a push to bring metro rail service to woodbridge, virginia. we will get to those stories and more shortly. there are storms moving through the area right now. good evening. i'm jim vance. >> i'm eun yang. let's get right to bob ryan with a check on the forecast. bob? >> last night we had tornado warnings and severe storms in southern maryland. now there are a few showers and a few thunderstorms trying to get going. but i think today these are not going to amount to severe weather. that will be a different story tomorrow. look at the storms, though, heading towards charlottesville and you folks out into loudoun county and northern parts of maryland andust see something rain. regular showers up around lancaster, pennsylvania, though, there are nasty storms. but we have another storm to

keep an eye on especially you folks heading for the beach. look at this dramatic picture. this is from the international space station. this is hurricane bill. this is the way it looks up from the international space station. right now it is a thousand miles southeast of cape hatteras and north carolina and winds are 125 miles an hour. i want to show you another dramatic picture. this is what the eye looks like. this is from 400 miles up. this was the eye as seen from the polar ar bitting satellite. you can see thetoac sk guric od you n let' bgocaack to our grapd you can see the -- the eye. there is the eye about 25 miles across. so it is a very, very nasty hurricane. and we now had more 90-degree days so far now up to 90-degree days after today. i will tell you about tomorrow what bill means for the coast when i join you. >> today the only man convicted in the lockerbie bombing was released from prison. back in 1988 pan am flight 103

was blown u in the skies over scotland. 270 people were killed. abdel basset ali al megrahi was sentenced to life in prison but today officials in could land released him on compassionate grounds. jay grey has our report. >> reporter: as abdel basset ali al megrahi walked out of prison and on to a waiting libyan jetliner, the people scars he created more than two decades earlier seemed to rip wide open. >> it is absolutely horrendous that we are going through this 20-odd years later, that, you know, the man who murdered our loved ones is about to walk out of jail and go back to his the 270 people, including 189 americans. originally sentenced to life in prison, the secretary of justice

in scotland freed abdel basset ali al megrahi after only eight years behind bars. on what he called, quote, compassionate grounds. after doctors determined he was suffering through the advanced stages of terminal cancer. good he should be in a scottish prison. if he were to die there then that's the way it was meant to be. but he shouldn't have been released under any circumstances. >> reporter: the decision has sparked anger and outrage that reaches all the way to the white house. >> we have been in contact with the scottish government indicating that we objected to this. and we thought i was a mistake. >> reporter: it is much more than just a mistake. for those whose loved ones are never coming home. >> he wants to go back or want him back to be surrounded by his family. we didn't have that opportunity. >> reporter: jay gray, news4. thousands of supporters turned out to greet abdel basset ali al megrahi when his plane touched down in libya this afrnoon. president obama said that the convicted bomber does not deserve a hero's welcome.

he also said meg had ary should remain under house arrest. for only the second time people in afghanistan are choosing the new president. deadly violence kept many voters away from the polls. and at least 26 people were killed in taliban attacks. the targeted polling places. richard engel reports. >> reporter: more than a dozen taliban rockets today exploded near centers in southern afghanistan. as a man was being interviewed more rockets fell. see, another one just landed, he said. the attacks and three small bombings in kabul this morning had a chilling effect. in kabul, voters just trickled in to schools and mosques to cast ballots and dip their fingers in ink. men on one side and women in segregated areas. threats of violence from the taliban seemed to have kept many people away. today the taliban vowed to hunt down those that voted. if we find anyone with ink on their fingers we will cut it off, said this taliban

commander. as they cast ballots today the leading presidential candidate, abdullah abdul a a president hamid karzai, called on afghans to defy the threat. >> come out and vote. so that through their vote afghanistan can be a most secure and more peaceful and a better country. >> reporter: and millions did. with long lines in the relatively peaceful north and west. preliminary results are expected saturday. there have been some complaints of voter irregularities. problem was equipment and the ink but so far the major problems seems to have been low turnout. richard engel, nbc news, kabul. >> they are proud of the people that made it to the polls despite threats of violence. >> i think that it does require certain amount of gut. >> violence discourages the people not to vote, go to the voting polls. that was surprising to me.

>> one complaint, though they wish they could have been able to vote in the election. the end is in sight for the popular cash for clunkers program and it will end monday at 8:0 p.m. congressional soues say that the transportation department will stop the program. the program offers car buyers rebates of $3500 or $4500 for trading in older vehicles for new and more fuel efficient models. the incentives have generated more than 450,000 vehicle sales. the president said the program has been successful beyond anyone's imagination. many dealers have been overwhelmed and they are complaining that they are not getting reimbursed quickly enough. senator edward kennedy is trying to make arrangements informs for a rapid replacement if he should have to resign his seat. senator kennedy has advanced brain cancer and cannot attend the funeral of his sister eunice last week and his absence raised new questions about hisset health. his aides say his condition has not changed. however, kennedy is concerned that if it becomes necessary to

surrender his seat, democrats could be denied a crucial vote on health care reform. currently massachusetts law requires a special election to be held within five months. kennedy has written a letter to state leaders asking them to change the law to permit the governor to appoint an interim replacement. the police in charles county, maryland, are investigating the mysterious death of a 3-year-old child in waldorf. s name is deshawn wade. he was found dead yesterday in his mother's house. the boy usually lived with his father in prince george's county. his two sister age 14 and 11, were watchingim h yesterday. their mother says the girls could not wake deshawn up to go to the bathroom. the boy was pronounced dead at a alhospit. the sheriff in charlie county ip investigating and an autopsy is being done now to determine how that child died. unveiled a proposal to extend metro rail further south into the old dominion. right now they are working on

legislation to pay for a feasibility study. that study alone could cost millions of taxpayer dollars. tracee wilkins has the story. >> reporter: woodbridge is the main hub for slug lines and commuter buses. workers trying to get around the i-95/395 corridor. basic traffic nightmare. >> spending two hours, three hours, every day commuting to and from work. we have to make it faster. >> reporter: when we told these commuters about a proposal to send metro their way -- >> that would be great. that would be a lot better. that way we can get -- waiting on the bus. take metro. >> reporter: u.s. representative jerry connelly is hoping to extend the blue line to woodbridge and the orange line to centreville. he wants monday to come from the u.s. transportation re-authorization bill coming up for a vote soon. introduced to capitol hill march, the extension is just a proposal. it needs studying, approval, and funding. even the possibility of its

reality is more than a decade away. commuters we spoke to said we hope it happens and soon. >> it should have happened a long time ago. it was something that they thought we didn't need. time has come and gone. we should have had metro ten years ago. 20 years ago. it wouldn't have cost the price it would cost now. >> really high costs. i think you have to look if you are going to bring it down here. you have to have interim stops between springfield and woodbridge, what number of people would be coming on at those location. >> a lot of my neighbors would be for it, definitely. you know, to give you a better commutg aspect from down here. but you probably would have those that would be against it as well. >> reporter: studying the proposal will cost millions of dollars. the extension itself, there's just no telling how much it would cost. dulles rail expansion is costing $5.2 billion. that's for 23 miles from here down to woodbridge and that's 12 miles. in springfield, i'm trace wilkins, news4.

the obama administration has not had an easy time trying to sell its message of change when it comes to health care. now some democrats are asking whether mr. obama is trying too hard to please conservatives. steve handelsman has our report. >> reporter: is president obama deluded by compromise in health care. >> obama lost his mojo. >> reporter: today's town hall some democrats worried he's too focused on wning over republicans. >> mark needs this to happen. >> my commitment to the american people is to get a good product which will include republican ideas but we are going to get this done one way or another. >> reporter: still left leaning democrats worry their leader st his nerve. this was a radio show at midday. >> how are you? >> i'm scared out of my mind talking to you here. i'm getting a little ticked off

handelsman, news4. >> the latest polls show support for the president's approach slipping. the same respondents also expressed less confidence in the republican handling of health care. on wall street, stocks surged for a third straight day. analysts say investors with encouraged about an estimate that estimates future activity. the dow is up 70 points on the day. nasdaq closed 19 points higher and the new york stock exchange rose 73. rules for credit card companies designed to protect consumers took effect today. they are part of the credit card act president obama signed into law met in may. credit card companies are now required to give customers 45 days notice if they change interest rates or any other important terms of an account. customers are also supposed to be given at least 21 days between the time statements are sent out and the time payments are due. previously customers only had 14 days. more protects will be in place by february. >> four u.s. army soldiers were killed when their military irdy

it is really hot out there. it is oppressive. >> when you have to fight the door open to get outside, that's a r.ai >> outside today, boy, it was -- we had our sky watcher in time lapse. the sky, sometime it is haze and pollution so thick we couldn't see things. but the air quality not bad other than the -- the humidity. our temperatures are -- high temperatures today making it without the severe weather for or friends in southern maryland, 94 degrees. now this august is hotter than july. july on average is our hottest month. three degrees above average and outside now still at 90 degrees.

got a bit of the haze looking at things. our temperature with the dew point of 68. feels like it is 74. light utherly wind. look at the temperatures up and down the east coast. 90 here. even boston, they have a little bit of the breeze coming in now from massachusetts bay. buffalo, 85 degrees. around the lakes, once again, it has been an unusually cool period. july was the coolest month on record in many spots from west virginia through ohio and illinois. and with that humidity look at the heat index. 95. brownsville, texas, the heat index right now is 105 degrees. the terrible, terrible drought continues there and in places like corpus christi and del rio, the temperatures day after day have been above 95. as a matter of fact, corpus christi right now is having their 44th day ia row of 95 or higher. corpus christi, 96 degrees.

it feels like it is 107. for the month of july, they have had a few hundred dreths of an inch since june. the drought down there, less than a quarter of an inch of rain. the last time the temperature in corpus christi, our friends there, didn't make it to 90 degrees, was june 1st. june 1st. so here we are with a few showers. we have not had anything like that terrible, terrible krout. very few. i think tomorrow we will be seeing a lot more earlier there was a severe thunderstorm warning for lancaster, pennsylvania. that is now pretty much moved off. and there are a couple of other showers out through northern maryland. and that's -- that's about it. i think we won't be seeing anything like what we saw last nature. corpus christi, again, temperatures there are into the -- into the near 100 degrees. heading out to the beaches for the upcoming weekend, the east coast. look at that eye staring back. 20 to 30. winds 125 miles an hour. bill now is about 600 miles

south of hamilton, bermuda. the good news it is looking like the track will be between the east coast, between cape hatteras and bermuda. they will get a bit of a go of it. they still have a hurricane watch and tropical storm warnings. but it will be staying off the coast and after bill, there's not a lot out there. so we will keep an eye on things. the rest of the tropics reasonably quiet. but as bill goes by, if you are heading oufor the beaches, rehoboth, ocean city, dewey, especially saturday and sunday, you will be seeing quite a surf and heavy swells and also some rip currents which could be -- want to keep an eye on that. tomorrow afternoon, a weather front and the -- that will be the focus and the reason that there is a risk of some severe weather. all the way from the hudson valley in and around us. few showers, few thundershowers, and i think they are out in the blue ridge. not as widespread as yesterday. but, obviously, this evening, very, very humid. as it will remain overnight tonight. tomorrow when you get up and

head out, temperatures for your early morning will be into the 70s. then tomorrow with that weather front, little bit more energy and instability in the atmosphere. the risk increases of afternoon thunderstorms building up. temperatures tomorrow 90 to 92 degrees. and then that front stays around us until saturday. it will be cloudy. saturday certainly not as hot. the plusses that we do need rain showers, we have had week after week of sunny weekends. temperatures near r.80. sunday, monday, into tuesday, comfortable p. with temperatures in the 80s. no impact direct impact on the coast from bill. it is a nasty hurricane. heavy surf. nasty rip currents. coming up tonight, new development in the case of a same-sex couple kicked out of a diner in maryland. they say they were targeted because of their sexual preference. the diner or the owner of the diner says no, that's not it. police are looking for the people that broke into a house for sale and then threw a big

that their family was in and they were in t air force and about to be deployed to korea. they seemed neighborly, delivering a gift. a bottle of wine. but friday night, this was the scene of a wild with 200 teens and young adults. they were attracted by a facebook posting and paid organizers $10 to $20 each to drink and dance to loud music. >> saw a bunch of kids and i said okay, if they are out here past 1:00, i'm going to call the cops. >> reporter: when police cruisers arrived the party-goers ran across lawns and breaking fences. leaving behind a mess. carpets ruined. smoke detectors destroyed and the basement door broken. >> wasn't just booze. it was also drugs. they found a lot of drug paraphernalia in there. >> reporter: the anne arundel county police secured the premises. but party organizers were brazen enough to come back the next day and saturday night broke in a second time to take back the table that they had brought here for their party. anne arundel county police made

no arrests at the time because they didn't learn until the next day that the party organizers weren't the owners of th house. and that they had broken in without permission. chris gordon, news4. >> anne arundel police are investigating the case as a break-in and have one suspect. some shoppers in virginia yy .a peap a hdnee ic raid. it happened at the m alas m this morning. rscefi a ndficers and federal agess enho accessories from one store. julie carey has our report. >> reporter: boxes and boxes of knockoff designer handbags, accessories and clothes. that's what the police carted out of this small store in the manassas mall. they also placed the owner under arrest. mall employees say a husband wife team ran lfa, luxury fashion accessories, often bringing their toddler son to the store.

>> they were so nice. really nice people. they were here at the kiosk. we all purchased from them. we liked them. they are very nays people. i'm really sorry to hear that. >> reporter: police say a complaint led them to investigate. earlier this month an undercover officer bought four handbags bearing labels like gucci and coach. the price, less than $200. when the officer asked the clerk if the bags were fake, she replied yes. >> they had a sign posted th that -- advertised the fact these are not authentic items. that's why they are being sold at such reduced prices compared to legitimate sales. >> reporter: police returned today to seize the questionable goods and spent hours collecting knockoffs. investigators say that admitting the bags were fake doesn't spare the store's owner from prosecution. the victim here, retailers who sell legitimate coach and gucci bags. >> they are taking their

business away by selling it -- selling the items for such a reduced price. >> reporter: many shoppers were surprised to learn the reason for the raid. >> why is it a crime? >> reporter: this woman that once bought scarves from lfa said she heard of police knocking down on knockoffs elsewhere. >> you hear about it but it is never here. >> reporter: by mid afternoon store's owner was free on $10,000 bond and faces one charge called infringement which could bring five years in prison. but he's already out some $53,000 in merchandise seized by police. julie carey, news4, manassas. >> the store owner is scheduled to appear in court on september 3rd. a lesbian couple filed a formal discrimination complaint against the taste yo der diner sill sprer spring. the couple contends they were unfairly asked to leave after showing a few moments of affection on august 12. the management said that it doesn't discriminate and released surveillance video showing 2 two women in a sustained embrace near the cash

washington nationals are having a fairly good week, promotional effort under way. the team is offering $1 tickets for tomorrow night's game against the milwaukee brewers. the nats are celebrating their newest team member, stephen strasburg with just a few seconds left before the deadline. he signed a record $15 million contract a couple of day ace go. the team will introduce him to fans at a news conference tomorrow afternoon. there's no more $1 seats online but the main box office will have an extra 1,000 tickets beginning tomorrow at noon. >> lining up to get those particular zblets they are already in line right now. let's go to dan hellie. she at redskins park.

the federal government gave colleges and universities advice on how to deal with the swine flu outbreak on campus this fall. there are special concerns about what to do if the virus starts spreading. tracie potts has the story. >> reporter: some students at the university of north carolina chapel hill d't seem too concerned about swine flu. >> nobody is dying around me. i'm good. >> i guess i will have to worry about it if i get it. >> reporter: administrators are asking students to bring their own thermometers, avoid class, dining hall it is they are sick, and preferably go home to recover. >> if they are able to -- the
