and severe thunderstorms. we may see some more showers later on. let me show you digital doppler and you can see where the line of nasty thunderstorms. there was a little bit of damage down into st. mary's county. couple of trees down. other warnings out. you can see out in the eastern shore but these are racing off towards the east and there is another batch in that area under a severe thunderstorm watch and until 9:00. it cleared the entire area. even you folks in anne arundel county, that has been ceredud. you can also see another patch of showers, good news is some spots got a fair amount of rain. look right here in northwest washington. we had over a half inch of rain. there's where the real nasty storms are now. they are up into new york state, philadelphia, on into new england. they are sometime under watches until later on tonight. off the coast also i will show you bill in a couple of minutes. it will be moving well off the coast but it will be producing some very, very heavy waves and big sur of on into sunday. by sunday evening, the surf and swells will be diminishing.

eporter: julie and wallace say they had fallen on hard times and got behind on>> their paymen t, onsobeo evicted from their home. julie and wallace faye, found dead inside their house last night. police are calling it a murder have been suicide. >> she said she didn't know what she was going to do. >> reporter: the fays' house is on the corner. it is the house on the block that everybody took notice of. it is the house that's decorated top to bottom every christmas. the fays, they took great pride in keeping their house up and keeping it neat. that's what made neighbors suspicious wednesday. because it was wednesday when they noticed that the fays' trash cans were taken to the back after the collection. they remained out here wednesday. they remained out here thursday. neighbors knew there was something wrong.

william county. a serious charge tonight against a montgomery county police officer who has been indicted for giving false testimony against a dui suspect. that indictment stems from this incident in may of 2008. which was captured on surveillance video. a man was arrested and charged with dui in gaithersburg. last april, officer dean a hoffman told the court that the driver was behind the wheel when she arrived at the scene. the video shows that the driver was actuallyyi lng in the car's back seat and when oicer hoffman got there. hoffman is indicted on one count each of perjury and misconduct in office which could bring up to ten years in prison. police in prince george's county and district work together this morning to catch a carjacker. just after 11:00 officers in maryland tried to pull the suspect over. he sped off in an suv and got on route 50 heading into the district. when he got to the 295 split he hit a guardrail and got out and carjacked someone and drove off

with their vehicle. the police say he ditched the car at northeast washington near new york avenue and bladensburg road. the suspect turned himself in at a hot. he injured himself after ditching the second car. if you want to catch a deal move fast. the popular cash for clunkers deadline looms, local car dealerships are working feverishly to meet the needs of an overwhelming number of customers. michael flynn joins us now with more on this story. >> it all ends monday. the tlooe $3 billion cash for clunkers rebate program is going to be ending monday and it is almost on empty. dealers still taking part in a program that are seeing even more customers trying to cash in. >> we need to do business now. and we did. >> reporter: george clark decided he had to put the pedal to the metal to get in on the cash for clunkers deal. he added his truck to the clunkers at the mall in gaithersburg and got a new car. >> i work at night. and i was -- i was driving along. i heard that the president made

an address last night and he said that the program was going to end on monday. and i called my wife at 7:00 in the morning and just said we need to go. >> cusmers have been calling, trying to get the last of that money, trying to get in here and find out what they can do, what's left in inventory. >> reporter: the manager expect as rush of last minute clunker trade-ins this weekend adding to the mounds of paperwork workers are already pressed to finish. addison says he is confident the government will make good on all of these claims. >> we are not worried about getting money. the government will come through on this thing. it would be terrible news if dealers played by the rules and didn't get their money. i think what's going to end up happening is just may take extra time to get this money. >> reporter: almost 900 customers at this dealership alone have taken part in the clunker program since it started last month and it has given this retailer and many others a big boost. while critics call it a waste of taxpayer money, george clark believes it is not just helping his bottom line.

topping our money crisis coverage tonight. home sales rise and encouraging words from the fed chairman today. it is a combination that sent stock prices soaring. joining us now live to talk about the day's developments, cnbc's mary thompson. mary, those stocks rose today on some good economic news. let's talk first about housing. hujs gains last month on sales of pre-existing homes. give us the details. >> that's right. the fourth straight monthly gains for existing home salesk o7.2% on ntmoer esbi biggest gain in ten years. year over year basis up 5%. sales rose in all regions of the country with the exception of

the west. one of the driving factors of this is we continue to see declines in home prices. immediate price of t driving new home buyers into the market. >> the sales also included fewer foreclosed homes. do analysts believe that trend will continue? where do they believe the housing market is headed now? >> a number of them believe we are in the early stages of recovery in the market. tax credit expires in november for home buyers and we will see if this that puts a damper on activity. as far as foreclosed homes go, they accounted for about -- distressed sales, accounted for 31% of july's existing home sales. down from 45% to 60%. it is a trend that is expected to continue. >> federal reserve board chairman ben bernanke gave his most optimistic assessment today good the u.s. economy. when does he think this recession wi be over? >> you know, he didn't give any

data or any dates on that. he's -- never does that. basically. what he did say today -- pretty much echoing what the federal reserve said two weeks ago when they issued a statement following their decision on interest rates. was economic activity both here and abroad appears to be leveling off. it looks like we are starting to see a slow recovery. speaking of the resolvey, bernanke said it is expected to be a slow one here in the u.s. when unemployment here in the u.s. gradually declining from the current high levels. reason for this is he believes there are continued strings in the financial system, very difficult for both businesses as well as individuals to get credit or loans. that will keep the economic revery held back a little bit. add to that, heeks expects, continued losses of the nation's banks and that, too, as well will keep a lidn -- i should say strong growth in the economy in the missouris ahead. >> but some good news to wind up our week. we appreciate it. mary thompson from cnbc. have a great weekend. >> you, too. if you usually check the

office said it is unlikely the city would be able to provide any monetary assistance for a project like that one. bob joins us now in a busy early afternoon. it was coming down out there, cats and dogs. >> when you hear tropical rain, we had that. atmosphere was saturated all the way up. the result was the heavy rains. outside now, a great day, also for sky watching. leftover clouds. there still could be more showers and our temperature with the rains that came through here in northwest washington, knocked things down. right now, the rainfall into washington, though, has only been in washington zero inches. rockville, almost two inches. temperatures right now around the east. we are at 85 degrees. our north in the 80s, 70s around the lakes. 63 degrees. cool air out there around the great lakes. and we will be seeing that lower humidity come our way after we get through tomorrow. today we have that humidity in on us and on top of it, a little ripple in the atmosphere.

that was the reason for earlier hang that severe thunderstorm watch. as you can see even for you folks in anne arundel county and calvert county, that's down now. the nasty storms have moved off well to the east. over the eastern shore, folks out -- maybe friends out at the beaches, they are getting a bit of a go of it. in and around us, meanwhile, there's really just some leftover showers downround dale city. and mt. vernon, you folks will probably get showers in. because the air is still saturated, when these do come through they come through with heavy rain. there you can see down in the northern neck and here is another batch now coming out of west virginia. right into the shenandoah valley. so there will be some more rain showers prime air, not any damaging thunderstorms. as a matter of fact, i think as we go through the next couple of hours in our future scan you can see that batch coming in to loudoun county. look at reston. over an inch of rain. we have had officially in washington, d.c., zero inches. out in the waters, this is the one we want to keep an eye on

over the weekend. there is bill. beginning to lose strength right now. category 2 with winds down to only a bit over 200 miles per hour. it will graze bermuda, tides there will be running three feet above average and have a tropical storm warning. you can see it staying well off the coast. give eight bit of a go but nothing unusual for nantucket. they get into saturday night. high winds up there at 20 to 25 miles an hour. but as i mentioned, the threat is because of the heavy surf. tomorrow we will have that weather front near us. as a result we are going to be seeing some leftover clouds and showers and could see another inch of rain. still a few more showers possible. it will be a bit on the humid side. after we get through 10:00, the last of the leftover showers, coming out of the shenandoah valley, could be some morning position and a fair amount of a into tomorrow. we are going to continue to see for you folks heading out to the beaches that threat ofe ssom

shenandoah valley and then cross the blue ridge. other areas around dale city and waldorf. humid warm afternoon. more showers and thundershowers. one warning now. 6:15 for the area around winchest winchester. keep you posted. back to you. >> bob, thank you. fire investigators say two building fires in prince george's county were the work of an arsonist. including the well-known burn manner knights of columbus hall in oxon hill. it happened thend of last month. it took 40 firefighters 90 minutes to bring the fire under control. the hall is located here in the 1,500 block of southern avenue. investigators were unable to examine all areas of the building until yesterday because of its condition. a second fire in the county, a house on stan faye drive in upper marlboro has also been ruled arson. three firefighters were injured

fighting the housee in silver spring, maryland. firefighters responded to the blaze here in the 2,000 block of featherwood street. we are told three firefighters suffered minor burns. the blaze spread to all three floors and town home's roof collapsed. the cause of fire sunday investigation. in the virginia's governor race today, democratic candidate creigh deeds used a backdrop as a major address. republicans have a different take on things. julie carey is here to explain it all. >> trailing in recent polls, creigh deeds' speech to reporters was an attempt to refocus his campaign. it was termed a desperate recess. >> i will move virginia forward and he will take us back. >> before a crowd of supporters at george mason unersity, creigh deeds campaigned future versus past. if the seat and newly released television ad, deeds aligned himself with the policies and approach of popar former

governor mark warner and portrays his opponent, republican bob mcdonald as in line with the economic policies of former president george bush. deeds echoed a theme he rolled out in northern virginia. mcdonald's legislative record of supporting abortion restrictions means he will focus on social issues if elected governor. >> during his entire career my opponent didn't sponsor one bill, not a single bill to create jobs through economic development or provide needed resources to education. instead his public service has been a career-long pattern of focusing on social issues. >> reporter: mcdonald focused on job creation, the campaign stop today at southwest virginia. his campaign fired back with this statement. if creigh dooeds thinks blowing the dust off an old playbook too many times a major new announce many he doesn't get what the voters are looking for. virginia needs jobs and opportunity. recognition that the campaign

roadside police traffic stops, this time a police dashcam rolled on a tornado. >> take a look at this. what it caught on tape in fayette county, iowa. it is recording chief tim davis' cam at 5:00 in the evening. the tornado was spotted on the ground near west union and traveled northeast. just missing the city heading towards eldorado. no one was hurt. a farm sustained heavy damage. the rip current warning signs are up along the beaches of bermuda this evening. the surf is kicking up and already keeping many tourists out of the water.

residents are preparing for hurricane bill. they are packing up and moving anything that could be tosse around. inland and to protected areas. jay grey now has much more on the trouble that hurricane bill is stirring up. as one of the final weekends as the summer season begins, thousands along the atlantic coast from florida to new england have an eye on hurricane bill. these pictures shows just how massive the storm is. forecasters expect the hurricane to stay out in the atlantic. hundreds of miles from the.s. coast. bill could still cost some problems. >> if you have an inexperienced surfer or a person that doesn't know what they are doing on the water, don't even try to go out there. >> reporter: but lifeguards and the emergency officials know that high waves have the opposite effect on hundreds of surfers and swimmers who will be looking for a thrill ride compliments of we are very
