good evening. i'm jim vance. >> eun yang in for doreen gentzler. straight to bob ryan in storm center 4 for the latest this. >> we did have some very, very heavy tropical rains right in washington. essentially the watch is down. there was a watcherier. you can see a nasty thunderstorm that's moved through winchester with nickel-sized hail there. it is now movingnto the panhandle of west virginia and those are the areas you folks that are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 6:30 tonight. let me how is some of the towns and it includes spots like harper's ferry very soon and charlestown, west virginia. as well as lovettsville and parts of loudoun county. those are the areas under the warning now. severe thunderstorm warning for possibly some strong winds but also hail because there has been a report hail. we will keep an eye on that and you can see that the bigger view of things is that these storms will continue to move more towards the north and northwest of washington. more out in the shenandoah

williamstown neighborhood for well over a decade. >> when i found out last night and i heard what happened i was just -- done with it. oryeep rter:ep jewely and walla say they had fallen on hard times. got behind on their payments. soon to be evictedtero their home. julie and wallace faye found dead inside their house last night. police are calling it a murder/suicide. >> she was so stressed out she kept say sheeg didn't know what she was going to do. >> reporter: the fays lived in a corner house in williams town. it was the house on the street that everybody noticed. the house that was decorated top to bottom on christmas. the fays took great care in the appearance of their house. and that's why neighbors knew something was wrong. you see, on wednesday they noticed that the trashes cans want taken back after collection. they were out here on wednesday. they were out here on thursday. and that's why the neighbors knew that something terrible happened here.

there's good news regarding the u.s. economy. news this home sales posted their biggest increase in ten years sent stocks surging on wall street. the dow gained 155 points. the nasdaq added 31 points. the s&p finished well above 1,000 with an 18-point gain. despite these good signs, some wonder whether the rebound will last. michelle franzen has our report. >> reporter: the biggest gain for existing home sales in a decade. resales for single family, town homes and condos soared 7.2% last month. realty economists call it an i encouraging sign the housing market is bouncing back. >> four straight months of rise and the increase is not isolated in few markets. we have seen essentially all four major regions of the country. >> reporter: foreclosed, distressed properties account for nearly a third of july's reresale. many first time buyers are taking advantage of the tax

credit. experts say that experienced buyers and investors are also jumping back in. >> sentiment is shifting and people are recognizing the housing market reached bottom and now they are entering the market with little fear of any further price decline. >> reporter: the troubled housing market is one area the white house has focused its efforts to jump start the economy with stimulus programs. cash for clunkers is another. >> cash for clunkers certainly cleaned out the car dealers' lots. they had lots of cars they couldn't get rid of and are gone. >> reporter: the popular vehicle trade-in program is set to end monday night and despite some complaints by dealers waiting for the governmen to reimburse them for millions of dollars in rebate, most agree that it helped at a critical moment. >> put suppliers to work and assembly lines to work and advertising on your station and it is good for everything. >> reporter: evidence the white house says that incentives are working. but with cash for clunkers winding down and a november deadline looming for the home buyer tax credit, the question for many economists is whether

the rebound will last. michelle franzen, news4. >> right now car dealers across the d.c. area are preparing for the last weekend of the cash for clunkepricehe mllen mic medellt program is coming to an end at 8:00 p.m. monday. at the fitzgerald auto mall ty are expecting a big rush this weekend. they had almost 900 clunker programs since the program started last month. today customers were putting the pedal to the metal to get it on and get inen on the deal beforet ends. >> work at night. and i was -- i was driving along and i heard the president made an address last night and he said that the program was going to end on monday. and i called my wife at 7:00 in the morning and just said we need to go. >> the dealership expects to be taking clunker trade-in right up until the monday night deadline. officials in afghanistan say that the results of the presidential election in that country will not be made public until tuesday.

the taliban tried to disrupt the election yesterday. more than 20 people were killed by bombses and other attacks. nevertheless, millions of people went to the polls. today both the leading candidates expressed confidence about the outcome of the vote. richard engel has our report. >> both of the main candidates in this presidential election aren't quite claiming victory but they each believe that they did win this election outright. dr. abdullah abdul a former foreign minister in this country, told us a short while ago that his reporting and his monitors around the country have been collecting information. >> results in my favor. most provinces. yes, these are preliminary results. these are indications. >> reporter: problem is hamid karzai, the president, and generally considered the front-runner in this election, is saying the same thing. that he believes that he is in the lead. the candidates think they will have more of an indication by

the end of this weekend. meanwhile, the top u.s. envoy for both afghanistan and pakistan, richard holbrooke, is urging the two sides not to make any statements, not to delegitimize the process and says there will be disputes but hopes that afghan officials can work it out calmly and wait for the final results to come in. richard engel, nbc news, kabul. today president obama called the election an important step forward for a country that has seen violence and instability for decades. he praised the afghan people for turning out to vote despite the threats from the taliban. >> we knew that the taliban would try to derail this election. yet even in the face of this brutality, millions of afghans exercise the right to choose their leaders and determine their own destiny. >> at the time ped is u.s. did not support a specific candidate in the election. he said that our nation's only concern was that the outcome accurately reflects the will of the afghan people. they are an international

outrage over the welcome received by the only man ever convicted in the bombing of pan am flight 103. abdel basset ali al megrahi left scotland and returned to libya last night. he was embraced by the son of libyan leader moammar gadhafi. it was the welcome that british officials advised libya to avoid when they released abdel basset ali al megrahi on compassionate grounds. the lockerbie bomber has terminal prostate cancer and doctors say he only has three months to live. nevertheless, his homecoming was painful for some british politicians to watch. >> all of us seeing the television last night found it distasteful. people should remember that this man was convicted of, you know, a very, very serious crime. remember the feeling of the families and friends of all those who died. >> 270 people were killed when a bomb caused pan am flight 103 to crash in lockerbie, scotland.

the flight from london was on its way to new york. the vast majority of the victims were americans. today president obama said he thoughthat the bomber's elaborate homecoming was, in his words, highly objectionable. earlier white house press secretary robert gibbs described the scene as outrageous and disgusting. the life and accomplishments of political columnist robert novak was remembered at a funeral mass today. family, friends and fellow journalists paid tribute to novak. he died tuesday from brain cancer. he was 78 years old. he may be best known for co-hosting several political talk shows including cnn's "crossfire." he will be a columnist for the "chicago sun-times" for decades. coming up in this half hour, new polls show the public is sing confidence in president barack obama's handling of health care. we will hear from the president. thousands of redskins, nationals and d.c. united fans will be riding metro saturday

"the washington post"/abc news poll shows his approval numbers are down and his disapproval numbers sharply up compared to april. the president insists he hasn't lost his mojo. >> there is something about august going into september where everybody in washing gets

all wee-wee'd up. >> reporter: while taking a couple of days off he is not giving up the fight for health care reform. the spokesman says the president is so committed to getting this job done that he would be comfortable settling for a single term in office if that's what it takes. on capitol hill, brian mooar, news4. >> the health care debate prompted a protest outside of the whole foods supermarket in silver spring today. protesters from the group progressive maryland were handing out leaflets. they were unhappy with the health care op-ed written by the supermarket's ceo published in "the wall street journal." a spokesperson for whole foods says the company has no official position on the health care reform issue and that the ceo offered constructive ideas and expressed his own opinion as the president invited all americans to do. small plane crashed while trying to land today. it happened in teterboro, new jersey. the co-pilot was a man from maryland. he and the pail on the were trying to land when something went wrong.

the plane clipped some trees and crashed into a field. the rescue crews found the two men injured but conscious. they were sitting near the wreckage. the pilot is said to be in critical condition with severe burns. the co-pilot is from laurel, maryland. he's said to be in serious condition. that plane was ferrying specimens for a company called quest diagnostics. the federal investigators are trying to figure out what went wrong, what caused the crash. coming up in the broadcast, we will tell you about a police chase and a carjacking that had police in d.c. and maryland busy today. new information this evening about why passengers were stranded on a commercial flight last night. >> back with a check on the forecast.

outside this is the way it looked around northwest washington. boy, it was the atmosphere saturated all the way up and all it takes is a bit of lift to finally make the clouds building up out there and then let loose within some spots more an an inch of rain in a few minutes. our high temperature and that will keep those grasses and the trees happy after what has been really an overall dry pattern for us. our temperature is 95 degrees. the record, 100. this is the fifth time up to 59d. a few showers to our south. you folks down around dale city, look at now with the sun low and very feign. there it is. rainbow. if you are seeing it. sort of a pleasant rain shower. current temperature in washington still steamy 85 degrees with a light wind. the heat index making it feel like it is 88 degrees. look at the temperatures around the east. with the clouds and the humidity, a lot of 80s. but here's a little sign, a hint, of our sunday weather. chicago right now, 71 degrees. but the dew points in the 50s. i think we will be seeing some

of that as we get into sunday and monday. in the meantime we have this humidity that's been coming in and a ripple up above us. and has been the reason for the nasty thunderstorms. not only that but to our north there's now a tornado watch out until 9:00 and for down east maine, even into parts of eastern new england, believe it or not. we still have that watch that is out to our east. and evenhough the watch is down now, there have been line that's come out of west virginia. look, a lot of lightning for you folks up there in winchester. report of nickel-sized hail around winchester. continuing now. these are the warnings until 6:30 to move into spots like very near brunswick and zoom in and again you can see the -- heading towards parts of frederick county, too. so all of this coming out of the panhandle of west virginia. you folks in charlestown, west virginia, catching it. another little batch. that's the one causing the rainbow from dale city to around oxon hill and the batch that brought through the real heavy

rain and now moved over to the upper eastern shore and there are some others, too, around fredericksburg. in the future scan, all of this will be moving more into montgomery county and northern maryland as we go through the next couple of hours, i think. we will keep you posted on that. look at washington's official rain. that's down at national airport. nothing in ocean city. also nothing but the temperatures into the 80s. and for you folks who may be thinking about heading out to ocean city, there is bill. it will stay safely off the coast. but as i mentioned earlier, seas and the waves will be bidding four, eight feet. it will be passing by bermuda tonight. the airport is closed until 1:30 tomorrow morning. fortunately, really grazing bermuda but heavy surf there. current conditions. it is losing strength. winds 100 and 105 miles an hour. it should stay safely off the new england coastline and then brings gusty winds saturday night into nantucket. not causing any, any major damage. so for us, overnight tonight, there is that batch of showers.

and there is the weather front that will be sort of hanging up around us and so with humidity along that, think we will be seeing more showers and thundershowers. there's bill moving off overing the weekend. tomorrow we might see another inch of rain in some of these showers because that air will still be pretty soggy. so a few more thunderstorms as we go through the evening. still very humid. they will settle down. then tomorrow when you get up and head out it will be cloudy. i think it will still be humid tomorrow. we are not going to get refreshing air in here with the morning temperature about 75 degrees. and a lot of clouds, especially as we get into the afternoon and look for more showers. seeing severe thunderstorms. the temperatures near 80 degrees and finally as we get into late tomorrow night and sunday, northwesterly winds come in. so you will notice the difference and the lower humidity certainly compared to today on sunday. sunday partly sunny. can't rule out completely shower out of the mountains. monday and tuesday also some comfy air in on us with temperatures in the 80s. maybe even a pew spots into the

in a wouldn't normally take it. >> i don't think it is. fridays it is bad just get up here the the green line sing packed. i don't think they are ready just yet. >> metro is always prepared for stuff like this. got it is caps going on. wizards. all the sporting events going on at the same time. they usually do a good job of providing transportation and everything. >> reporter: again, the main message for metro for the big sports weekend is that plan your trip. and if you use the red line, add extra time. tom sherwood, news4, washington. >> metro's also encouraging riders to buy a round-trip fare card. that way you don't have to stan in line at the fare card mnsz on the way home. the judge who let the air out of the tire of an illegally parked car has been ticketed for his actions. charles county circuit judge, judge robert nalley, admits he deflated the tire of a car parked near the courthouse. he received a traffic citation today for tampering with a motor vehicle. nalley says the car was

repeatedly parked in a restricted space. last week he resigned from his position as chief administrative judge. nalley still serves as an associate judge in charles county circuit court. a montgomery county police officer has been indicted accused of giving false testimony against a dui suspect. it stems from this incident back in may 2008 captured on surveillance video. a man was arrested and charged with dui in gaithersburg. last april the officer told the court that the driver was behind the wheel when she arrived on the scene. the video shows the driver was actually lying in the car's back seat when officer ffman got there. hoffman is indicted on one count each of perjury and misconduct in office which could bring up to a ten years in prison. the police in d.c. arrest ad guy today who was involved in a police chase and a carjacking. just after 11:00 this morning, officers in cheverly, medical, tried to pull a suspect over. he sped away.

got on route 50 heading towards d.c. when he got to the 295 split, he hit a guardrail and jumped out. that's when the cops say he carjacked another vehicle and drove off with that one. police say he ditched that car in northeast d.c. near bladeensburg road.is the suspect later showed up at d.c. .spalit and investigators say that he injured himself after leaving the second car. police in fairfax county are continue continuing to investigate a fatal pedestrian accident this morning. they identified a victim and 64-year-old. the investigators say that he was hit by a car while trying to cross new braddock road near singleton's way. the driver of that car was injured. he is expected to be okay. police say that neither speed nor alcohol were factors in this crash. in virginia's governor's race creigh deeds gave what his campaign billed as major address

using northern virginia as backdrop and trailing in recent polls and republicans are calling today's speech a desperate attempt to reset his campaign. julie carey has our report. >> i will move virginia forward and he will take us back. >> reporter: before a crowd of supporters george mason university, democrat creigh deeds framed the campaign ahead as future versus past. in the speech and in a newly released ad, he alliance himself with policies and approach of mark warner. he portrays his opponent, bob mcdonald, in line with the economic policies of george bush. deeds echoed a theme he rolled out in northern virginia a few weeks ago. mcdonald's legislative record of supporting abortion will mean he will focus on these issues. >> didn't sponsor one bill, not a single bill to create jobs through economic development, needed resources to education. instead his public service has been a career long pattern of

focusing on social issues. >> reporter: mcdonald focused on job creation. his campaign fired back with in statement. if creigh deeds thinks blowing the dust off an old playbook amounts to major new announcement he doesn't get what the voters of virginia are looking for in their next governor. the mcdonald campaign also continues to hammer deeds with another criticism that he hasn't laid out a specific transportation funding plan like the republican has. >> i said that i am willing to considering anything we can forge bipartisan cole. >> reporter: that approach may not work if the effort to win over northern virginia voters. >> i think it is important for the candidates to lay out some specific proposals. it is not enough for the voters, for the candidate to say that is up to the general assembly, the specifics will come later. >> reporter: in fairfax county, julie carey, news4. republican bob mcdonald make his stop in northern virginia

tomorrow. >> bob. >> new warnings out for that line that's come out of west virginia with some damaging winds and hail so reports in justin county of some damaging winds. you can see it now moving into loudoun county and so there's that new severe thunderstorm warning. let me draw the areas that are under the gun. this is moving east at 35 30, 35 miles per hour. there are some of the spots for you folks in rock hall, braddock heights, poolesville. includes parts of northern montgomery county and frederick counsel tip. the warning that will be continuing for another half hour or so. we will keep an eye on this line. once again, this is a line of severe thunderstorms and you can see an awful lot of lightning and has had a history of producing some damaging winds. you folks in frederick county, maryland, and northern parts of montgomery county, germantown area, and purcellville where it is now. best advice is to stay put. there could be damage as this line comes through. keep you posted. >> thanks, bob.

that's according to the department of transportation. officials confirmed the pilot tried to evacuate passengers from a plane stuck on the tarmac in rochester but repeatedly turned down by a representative of a competing airline because tsa staff had left for the day. transportation officials say that the handling of the situation lacked common sense. the flight had been diverted to that airport because of bad weather. as noted earlier, the government is stopping cash for clunkers on monday. but now a synagogue in new york is offering something bit similar. the synagogue will give free high holiday tickets if the members donate their old cars it won't cost anything to attend rosh hashanah and yom kippur servic services. temple will try to sell the old cars and use the proceeds for its humanitarian programs. in spain are calling the first ever face transplant to include a tongue and jaw a success. today the surgeon who led the team spoke at a press.

big day down at nationals park today. one we have been waiting for for a while. >> it was fun. the future face of the franchise finally made his appearance here at nationals park. the nats have been trying to temper expectations with stephen strasburg but they had a very elaborate introductory press conference in front of 200 3shgs 00 fans. probably hard to tell because a lot of them didn't want to be there in the lazy sun. safe to say that no other number one pick has ever had an introduction like this. despite the heat, the fans were out and the ceremony included fireworks and couple of video presentations. tras strasburg the podium as long as with his agent. and team president stan cass ton. strasburg will not be playing on the major league level this season. but if he follows the lead of

stephen strasburg when you drafted him? give me odds. what did you think? >> i really thought we were going to sign him. we gave stephen as a guy that wanted to play ball, he wanted to play professionally and knew every month, every month and every draft and event ri year that sets him back, his dream to get to the major leagues. and i -- i had a good feeling he wanted to play. i thought we had a good chance to sign him because we wanted to sign him and he planted to play. i think the -- they agreed with us and got it done. >> it seems crazy to say $15 million was a bargain but compared to some of the numbers that were thrown around, $25 million, $30 million, $50 million someone created that out of nowhere. do you feel you got a good deal for this kid? >> i think -- you pay for value. you get value for your product and stephen certainly has a value set upon him. i do believe over the four years

ben roethlisberger has an achilles injury and does not know if he will be under centre forethesteelers. one quarterback for the redskins playing the first time this season is chase daniel. and he's certainly looking to make his mark because right now he's the fourth string quarterback for the skins. daniel has adjusted to the program slowly after a stellar career at missouri. just like brennan he was a heisman trophy finalist. he did not play in the last game and would have to beat out brennan for a roster spot which isn't likely. but for now he is focus order playing first game of his pro-career and getting a bit better. >> it is done. first nfl camp done and in the books. i definitely feel i got a shot, got better. footwork has gotten better. my arms have gotten stronger even though we are throwing every day the past three weeks. i'm excited about the chance to play. >> you are going to be out there and your first nfl game and you actually have been on the field. are you going to go for the home run or happy with a double n. >> i'm going to go out and do what they ask me to do. hand the ball off 08 times a

school. make sure they get their shots. this year kids are required to get six more vaccinations in addition to last year's five. the department of health has opened several vaccination clinics. tomorrow four clinics will be open from 8:00 inheng mnior until 4:00 i then afternoon. si miller middle school, ballou, cramer middle school and coolidge high school. government must boost preparations for a swift response. that's according to the world health organization. the who officials said today the virus will sped over the coming months with some countries seeing swine flu cases double every three to four days for several months until peak tranc mission is reached. so far it has killed an estimated 1800 people worldwide. who estimates as many as 2 billion people could become infected over the next two years. that's nearly one-third of the world's population.

hundreds of americans are testing the swine flu vaccine now to make sure it is safe for the rest of us this fall. today officials said so far those tests show no danger. >> final check, bob. >> we have nasty storms moving just to the north of washington. you had a great picture from kevin. heading home to winchester and snapped this picture. just a few minutes ago. near berryville. you can see that storm came out of winchester and now moved through loudoun county to panhandle of west virginia. and the main feature now has produced a history of some hail and damaging winds. look at the intense lightning. right now and you folks into clarksburg, germantown, just a few minutes. you ca get an idea of the intensity of that storm. so be prepared and there are other storms, too, st. mary's county. be prepared for intense light mink and power outages. perhaps damage. upper parts of montgomery county, frederick county, that will continue on into carroll county, too. overnight tonight we are going to continue to see more of those up until 10:00, 11:00 and keep you posted.
