a lot of rain and some storms moved across the washington area this evening. we could be in for some more rain tonight. good evening, i'm pat lawson. >> i'm jim vance.

for a while there, it was kind of rough today. jackie bensen has been in the weather in rockville. we begin with bob upstairs. >> we have had a wild time of it with tornado warnings. a number of severe thunderstorm warnings. no widespread damage, but some hail. we have another batch of thunderstorms coming into the western suburbs. can see a bit of lightning for you folks in fairfax, county, but nothing severe. look at what was happening earlier. these are great pictures. this is kevin mourn, berryville, they did have large hail in winchester, and look at this shelf clouf. sort of an outflow from a severe thunderstorm in frederick county, maryland. that is where the tornado warnings were. our temperatures into the 70s. the other big story is hurricane bill. whichs going to have a big effect along our coast for the weekend. i'll tell you about that. dangerous rip currents. when i join you, a few minutes. >> all right, thanks, bob. the storms have knocked out power to a few thousand people in our area. and it's also made for some tough driving tonight. jackie bensen joins us live now

from rockville. jackie. >> reporter: this was a very tough night for motorists. local jurisdictions report numerous accidents, especially in montgomery county. this was more rain than we've seen in this area for some time. now, about 6:00 tonight, the skies opened. the rain swept from frederick county into northern montgomery county, soaking demass cuss, lleytonsville, german town, even into the rockville and wheaton areas. people got soaked. now, earlier in the evening, rain storms sent creeks up over their banks in the anondale area. a man had to be rescued from a flooded culvert. a number people transported to hospitals. we understand their injuries are not life threatening. we're told right now petco has about 2500 customers in montgomery county without power because of the storm. back to you, pat. >> all right, jackie bensen, thanks, jackie.

there was a crackdown under way tonight in a part of the city well known for pros that stoougs. the area between i and l streets and fourth and fifth northwest has been declares a prostitution free zone. there are some who say this crackdown won't change anything. craig melton is has more. >> reporter: based on arrests and community complaints, yesterday, police put up signs like this. area base owners and prostitutes say they don't think they'll do much. she has been walking these streets around fifth and k for three years. >> here, northeast -- >> reporter: starting midnight friday, d.c. police launch add program aimed at penetrating that aura of invincibility. for ten day, they've declared her work zone a prostitution-free zone. >> the goal is to -- disrupt

prostitution in the area. >> reporter: d.c. police have broader authority than usual to go after people they suspect of solicitation. >> they don't necessarily have to be caught in the act of prostitution, but if they're congregate, officers can tell, you guys can't be in this zone. >> reporter: do the signs deter you? >> me personally, no. it's not going to change just because we put a sign up. and worst case scenario, you move to another location. >> reporter: this shop is right in the middle of the zone. he noticed the zisigns today. >> i said, august is vacation time so maybe prostitutes need vacations too. >> reporter: says street walking has not hurt his business and added he's about as confident as this woman. >> one of the crackdowns is

going to be a photo op basically to say we're doing something. >> reporter: wishing the city would address the root causes of prostitution like abuse, poverty and drug addiction. but until then, the signs remain. at least for another nine days. >> we'll take theigns down and they're free to congregate again. if they're out here committing crimes, we can catch them and prove a case, then they'll get arrested. >> reporter: now, first time you are caught, you'll be given a warning. the second time though, you'll be charged and you'll be -- charged with violation of a prostitution-free zone. fine of up to $300. and/or a 180-day jail sentence. craig melvin, news 4. back to you. the judge who let the air out of the tire of an illegally parked car has gotten a ticket. he admits he deflated the tire of a car parked near the courthouse. he got a traffic citation today for tampering with a motor vehicle. he says he was frustrated

because the owner of the car kept parking in a restricted space. last week, he resigned from his position as chiefdministrative judge. nally still serves as an associate judge in the circuit court. montgomery county police officer has been indicted, accused of giving false testimony against someone she arrested. last april, officer dina hoffman told a court she found a driver behind the wheel of a car before he was taken into custody and charged with dui. a surveillance camera captured video of the incident in may of last year. the video shows the man was actually in the back seat of the car when hfman arrived at the scene. if convicted, she faces up to ten years in prison for perjury. a local man is one of two pilots who survived a fiery plane crash in new jersey last night. 22-year-old man is from maryland. he was co-piloting a small plane that hit a small tree near new jersey's teetterboro airport eay

this morning. investigators say the plane's other pilot was trying to abort the landing but it's not clear wh both pilots walked away but with severe burns and other injuries. they were listed in serious condition today at a hospital in new jersey. >> there is more to come tonight. up next, new information in the case of a swimsuit model allegedly killed by a reality tv show contestant. she was romantically linked to. local car dealers getting ready for a crush of customers. the last weekend of the cash for clunkers program. >> a puppy goes to great length to get himself the name lucky. >> stan? >> believe it or not, brett favre is back making his preseason debut with the vikings. the nationals trying to snap a three-game losing streak against the brew crew.

offering up a reward for information about man wanted for this murder. her body was discovered inside a suitcase in california. authorities say fiore's fingers and teeth were missing. an arrest warrant has been issued for her ex-husband, ryan alexander jenkins, who had appeared as a contestant on a reality tv show on vh1. police believe he returned to his native canada. jenkins and fiore were married in march. her relatives say she had the marriage annulled. a couple in virginia that dead in a home that they as were about to lose. they were facing eviction from their home on seigel court. their bodies were found in that house last night. police say both died of gunshot wounds. police are calling it a murd/suicide.mu a local newspaper reporter

interviewed the couple about their situation last week. >> they were distraught. they were getting their items together, packing boxes. but you could really tell that the last thing they wanted to do was leave their home of more than 13 years. >> she was so sessedde out. she kept saying shet dn'idnod k wat khe sas going tohe do. >> she had fetedirrom the army, was 56 yedearsrs old. ac52e was , worked at cost co-co. police are investigating who fired the shots. a dire warning about the swine flu from the world health organization. the w.h.o. predicts some countries will see swine flu cases begin to double every three or four days for several months until peak transmission is reached. the doctors group estimates 2 billion people could become infected over the next 2 years. it's nearly a third of the population. hundreds are involved in testing a vaccine.

dealers across the country are preparing for a last-minute rush of shopper. they're hoping to take advantage of the cash for clunkers program in its final days. the obama administration says the $3 billion program will come to an end after this weekend. the dealers must submit their paperwork by 8:00 p.m. on monday in order to get reimbursed by the goverent. those who have aeady been given rebates say the government is slow to pay them back. >> it's a great program, just not exactly the best execution

pass through the fort to then station. there's a puppy that has earned his name, lucky. a little black lab that somehow got himself stuck in a storm drain. the seven foot drop for that little pup. firefighters in albany were called out to the scene. they got him out. lucky seemed a little scared from his ordeal. that figures. after a checkup at a local vet, appears to be in good shape. no word if he had an owner before he fell in. you can be sure he will have one very soon if he doesn't already. >> you betcha, cute little guy. >> "you wouldn't believe what happened." >> he had that look. >> what's coming our way? >> wild weather today. things quieting down. and finally by the time we get into sunday, some quieter weather. we had everything from bill to wild weather outside today. so many heavy rains. fortunately, no reports of any tornadoes. but, boy, there were boiling skil skies. this is rocksville. that was a wild thunderstorm that came by.

hope your power's back on. as much lightning as we've seen in any thunderstorm this summer, our temperature outside now, right here in washington, believe it or not, we only had a tenth of an inch of rain officially down in national airport. our fifth 95-degree day. what a difference now. 75. you can see when those storms have moved by, a lot of 60s and 70s. that's a sign of some of our weather to come. there's bill, off the coast. you can see the high clouds. folks who may be heading out to the coast may see some high clouds. no direct influence from bill. we've got another batch of thunderstorms cing through. can see how it's moved out the western areas. right now, around us in washington. there's that line that is continuing once again to come into fairfax county. will move inside the beltway very shortl nothing like any of the wild weather before. that line stretches up into eastern parts of frederick county. montgomery village over 2 inches of rain.

and at the same time, ocean city hasn't had any rain. temperature there is 83 degrees. but if you are headed out for the beaches, here's the east coast. there's bill. it is beginning to lose power. but nonetheless, winds are still 110 miles an hour. the surf around bermuda, winds of over 60 miles an hour. they're expecting some significant surf. at the time of high tide, over 3 to 4 feet above average. the good news, it will stay between bermuda and the east coast and then head up toward the kanaan yad mare ra times and lose power. by the time it gets into new england, nantucket may be seeing winds 25 to 30 miles an hour tomorrow night. here's the future cast. there are the leftover showers. you can see bill off the coast. with its tight band of winds and isobars. that shows you the pressure. tomorrow, with the weather front that's going to be sort of settling along us, i'm afraid we'ring good to be look at more

big day in d.c., we got to look at them eye to eye. >> they're expecting big things for him. might may have been the best week for the nationals since they came to d.c. capped with the introduction of their future ace, sven strosburg. the organization has been careful to say he's not the savi savior. he must be close because the nationals threw a party like i've never seen for any draft pick in history.

on the field, it was quite a show. included fireworks. the general manager and team president, not pictured. strassberg hasn't done much the last couple of months. then it's off to spring training. he's hoping to fire a quick path to the majors. he won't be pitching for the big club this year. >> i know they're doing it with my best interest at hand. why rush me out there immediately to where i might not be able to handle the workload? i want to go to the big leagues when the time is right. >> that is the new pitcher. it's been a great week for the nationals off the field. on the field, not so much. the guys dropped another one to

see vick in an actual preseason game. we got our first look. made his twin cities debut. the unretired, then retired, brett favre looked kind of strange in purple. brett favre's very first completion coming up here. i think he'll look for the rookie out of florida. his name is percy harvin. i have a cheat sheet so i knew it was coming. that was the highlight, one completi completion. i guess we felt compelled to show it, i promise we won't do it again. >> related to cecil? >> his son. kind of the same stocky build. >> looked just like him. >> up next, they say it's a way to get all the flavor without all the calories.

columnist robert novak was laid to rest today. and praised as a man whose work was sometimes controversial but always worthy. family friends, colleagues, packed st. patrick's church in downtown washington for the funeral. the conservative columnist was known for hosting political talk shows. he, white house spokesman, robert gibbs, said novak's work

deserved respect regardless of his political views. novak died of brain cancer on tuesday. he was 7 years old. imagine waking up one day with hardly any memories, can't even remember your name. a man in seattle says it's the nightmare he's living right now. he claims he woke up in a city park three weeks ago with no i.d. and with $600 stuffed in his socks. detectives believe his name is edward lightheart. a public relations consultant who recently lived overseas. doctors have diagnosed him with a rare form of amnesia. >> this is definitely not -- i can understand why they're coming from, but this is -- one of the most hellish experiences that anybody can go through. >> lightheart says he does have some memories like memories of places he used to live. there's some new infortion out that suggests that drinking could increase your risk of

cancer. drinking liquor, that is. certain kinds of liqu. researchers in canada studied about 3,600 men aged 35 to 70. they found those who averaged at least one drink a day had a greater chance of certain can r cancers than men who drank occasionally or not at all. we're talking beer and spirits here not wine, that were linked to the highest risks. the findings were public accomplished in "cancer detection and prevention." . if you like wine and you're watching your weight, you can enjoy a glass without the guilt. french growers have this new vino called so light. it's grown to produce much less sugar. only 60 calories per serving. about the same amount as a cup of sugar free yogurt. most wines contain about 13%. growers swear not even wine enthusiasts can tell the difference. the french are expecting to sell several milliove

there's a woman in cuba who writes love letters for the romantically challenged. he started her little business 15 years ago. things got a little tight for her. word of her special talent spread. she now fields 60 requests a month. some come from other comforts. like in this person's case, a doctor in mexico, wanted to meet a cuban nurse. he did. one letter and five years later, they now have a 5-year-old daughter. and it's a bargain too. those letters only cost 25 cents each. >> not a bad deal. >> we got to find [ cheers and applause ]
