obama/bernanke involvery plan ridiculous. >> borrowing money from the chinese the pay ourselves money in the form of cash for clunkers to buy cars from ourselves from companies we essentially own like general motors so some day we might be able to pay ourselves back. that's the country we live in today. >> reporter: a country whose economy will still be guided by a republican. ben bernanke. the senate still needs to confirm the fed chair to a second term but, wendy, leading lawmakers up here say no problem. back to you. >> all right. thank you, steve. student pilot caused tense moments today. pilot flew into restricted air space over the district. aft were alerted at about 2:30 this afterman in order to intercept a sma small plane that crossed the no-fly zone. 16 fighter jets escorted the plane to the montgomery county air park where it landed safely. secret service agents questioned the pilot. so did authorities out of baltimore. we are told the pilot got lost

one is african-american. either case, people in manassas aren't happy. even from a thousand feet above, the words and symbol of hate have the power to anger. this morning news chopper 4 captured this video from a parking lot of a manassas elementary school. someone had taken rolls of sod and spelled out the title kkk and the words white power and formed a swastika. >> i just moved back to virginia. that's the school i went to when i was a kid. i mean -- yeah, that's surprising. i don't see anything like that really happening around here. >> reporter: police say it was four teenagers that took the sod from a renovation project at sinclair elementary school overnight. the authorities picked them up hours after receiving a call about the crime. police would not go on camera but in a statement they say that the suspects have been identified and are being charged with vandalism. they are all males from manassas and are 14, 15, 16, and 17 years old.

we also know all the suspects that attend stonewall jackson high school in manassas and what's more, they likely are not members of a white power group. three are white. and one is african-american. >> ones ain't round here are quiet. i mean, we have some down the street and that's the worst thing they do, mick a lot of noise. that's it. >> reporter: after being charged the suspects were released to parents. in a statement a spokesman with prince william county public schools says the sinclair elementary school community can be assured that the school is a safe welcoming and inviting place. school begins in prince william county september 8th. no word yet on whether the four suspects will face disciplinary action from the school. a stabbing of a woman and child in a home in the falls church area. police say they were called to the home in the 3400 block of glen carlin drive just after 2:00 this afternoon. they say an adult woman and child had both been stabbed but

did not have a life threatening injury. they were taken to the hospital. adult male was arrested. police say this he was you ared when they took him into custody. no wore yet on a motive for the stabbings. police have arrested a man and charged him in connection with the death last week of 3-year-old child in waldorf, e u ddnder er ie mysterious circumstancestas week. itauorthies aeshete td or mother's yfd. onyronnt ant gibson. he is 25rsea y old. he has been chahedit w first-degree child abuse resulting in death. desean normally lived with his father but visiting his mother when he died. court documents of the child had a fractured rib and hemorrhaging in his back and forehead. the suspect reportedly told police that the injuries happened while the two were wrestling. >> reporter: >> interviewed the suspect who admitted to inflicting those injuries. >> do you think anything evil happened here?

a government panel is saying that 90,000 americans could die from the swine flu later this year. a scenario creating new anxiety about when a vaccine could be available. tracie potts has our report. >> reporter: with school back in session the flu is already starting to circulate. carnegie melon in pittsburgh put its campus on alert. 18 students have already reported flu-like symptoms >> seems to me that everyone in my dorm has a cold right now. so i don't know how to tell the difference between who has swine flu and who doesn't. >> reporter: a panel of scientists advising president obama says nearly 2 million americans could end up in the hospital with h1n1 and 300,000 in intensive care. the panel prkts some hospitals could be overwhelmed. >> we do have a plan in place for bed capacity and diversion

of patients. but staffing is going to be the biggest problem. >> reporter: since the vaccine will target, among others, school children the government wants schools to host flu clinics butome district space they don't have the staff or money. >> we are not organized to prevent disease. we are organized poorly, albeit, to treat disease in this country. >> reporter: the government manufacturers to speed up production of anti-viral medicines since producing the vaccine is going slower than expected. the government is still waiting on results from clinical trials to tell manufacturers how much to put in each vial. >> fill and finish based on what we know soar we think is the right dosage. >> reporter: that won't be confirmed until ast least mid september. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. >> u.s. secretary of education arne duncan says schools should be prepared to keep teaching even if swine flu sickens large numbers of students. a small plane crash landed

in the parking lot of a mall in new jersey today. it happened at the rockaway township mall in northern new jersey. an instructor and student walked away from the crash, only onl minor injuries. the plane had just taken off from a nearby airport when the pilot reported engine trouble. the plane hit several trees and then it lost a wheel before it spun around and landed on its nose. no one on the ground was injured and emergency crewsoved in and blew foam all over the plane to keep it from catching fire. an update on the overnight launch of "discovery" has been scrubbed yet again because of a valve problem. the shuttle was scheduled to lift off around 10:0 tomorrow morning. but the scoffry of that problem will make eight no go. the shuttle was also supposed to launch at 1:30 this morning. last-minimum thunderstorm popped up around the spacehe0 tn laun. tog ine bak tgnoin going to be taking place. when discovery gets off the pad utnautl be carrying anrost a from our area, patrick forester who graduated from west springfield high.

the fact that a coroner in california found that michael jackson's death was a homicide could mean criminal charges against his doctor. dr. conrad murray has told police he administered a mix of powerful drugs to treat jackson's insomnia just hours before jackson died. a law enforcement source tells nbc news that jackson's death was caused by the anesthetic propofol. combined with at least two sedatives. investigators are also looking into the doctor's actions following jackson's death. dr. murray's cell phone records showed he made three separate calls lasting 47 minutes after jack jackson stopped breathing but before anybody called 911. lawyers for dr. murray say that at least four other doctors were also prescribing drugs for jackson. and that those lawyers are looking forward to reacting to the coroner's report once that report is officially released. still ahead in this broadcast, we are going to tell

think, tomorrow. on the other hand, down the coast a bit, there have been showers in the outer banks and also, you can see scattered showers around myrtle beach and all of that. out near the gulf stream where the waters are mighty warm. i will show you how warm. chincoteague, they had a few sprinkles today. you got friends in ocean city on the vacation. 84 degrees now. and little bit of an onshore breeze helps. if you are thinking about the beach for the upcoming weekend, do you want to keep posted on the tropics. because we are now moving in late august to september. the time of peak hurricane season. tropical storm season. here's the reason why. look at the oranges all were in the water temperature out in the atlantic. caribbean is into the 80s. you can see 86 degrees now. gulf of mexico. so that's sort of like when you put the water on the stove, you watch it start to steam and bubble, that's what is happening. there is that front -- still a tropical wave. very strong one. very likely to become a depression. and the hurricane hunters are

out into it now and could become danny. you can also see how far away it is. meantime, tomorrow, that high pressure that's been bring thing fine weather moves off. we get into humidity and and of those afternoon clouds and there is a little weak weather front. watch as it moves to our north and may kick off as we get into late thursday and some afternoon showers. tomorrow we may get up to 91, 92, 93. for this evening, though, very please sxant warm with temperatures into the high 70s to mid 80s. and 83, 84 degrees. later on tonight, skies will clear once again. but with the humidity coming in a little bit, not as cool and refreshing as it was this morning. even though it will be clear. i think in town, our temperatures are about 70 to 71 degrees. a lot sunshine again tomorrow. some of those fair weather clouds and some high clouds beginning to come in. but once again, a nice day. bit more on the humid side. temperatures tomorrow could get up to 91, 92, 93 degrees. 21 days in a row -- not in a

we are back with a look at the stories making headlines tonight. student pilot caused concern this afternoon after he flew into restricted air space over the district. government officials say he got lost and disoriented. military jets and helicopters intercepted the plane and escorted it to the montgomery county air park where did it land safely. fr high school students are charged with an incident at st. clair elementary in manassas. police say the teenagers, aged 14 to 17, pulled sod off of a palette and used it to write the words white power, kkk, and to form a swastika. three of the teenagers are white and one is black. they have been charged with vandal itsm and released to their parents. a man has been arrested and charged in connection with last week's death of 3e are old de sean wade. that 25-year-old myron antonio gibson has been charged with first-degree child abuse resulting in death. he is the mother's boyfriend. the suspect allegedly told police that desean was injured

while the two were wrestling. too much sugar is not a good thing. now for the first time the american heart association is providing recommendations for the amount of sugar you should eat. leanne gregg reports. >> reporter: the nation's love affair with sugar is not so sweet when considering its potentially impact on health. >> obesity is practically an epidemic and obesity is almost root and cause for a lot of the diseases. especially heart disease. >> reporter: on average, americans consumed 22 teaspoons of sugar a day. 335 calories. that equals two cans of soda and a chocolate bar. the american heart association says that's too muc and recommends a dramatic decrease in sugar intake. for women six teaspoons or 100 calories a day and for men, nine teaspoons or 150 calories. >> there's a lot of excess sugar that's out there in our diet that's going to be very difficult for us to eliminate.

>> reporter: sugar andth er sweeteners are added not only to treats like these but to frozen dishes and energy drinks and cereal and a list of other foods many may think is good for you. >> if we are already getting sugar we need from our fruits and our vegetables and our carbohydrates, so there's really not an additional need to go out and obtain excess sugar in our diet. >> reporter: high intake of added sugar as opposed to naturally occurring sugar like in fruit is alsossociated with increased risk for high blood pressure. risk factors for heart disease and stro. nutritionists recommend more fruit, vegetable, whole grains, and lean protein. changing habits away from sugar, they say, won't be easy but consider the payoff, healthier life. leanne gregg, nbc news. >> you can easily check for added sugar by reading the label. look for ingredients like corn syrup, fructose, evaporated cane juice. those are all sugar. health heart association is not recommending any general limits for added sugar for children.

in about 30 minutes now, a health care town hall meeting is set to get under way in reston, virginia. the town halls have turned very heated across the country lately. as people from both sides of the issue turn out in big numbers. jackie bensen is in reston, virginia, with more on this. >> reporter: there are hundreds of people lined up waiting to get into -- in the door. there are dozens of protesters here from a variety of groups and viewpoints. not all of them have to deal with health care reform. as i said, people have been gathered here since 4:00 p.m. doors of the auditorium at south lakes high school didn't even open until 6:00 p.m. for the 7:00 p.m. town hall meeting. the meet willing be hosted by virginia congressman jim moran and feature form -- will feature former presidential candidate and dnc chair howard dean as has been the case from other parts of the country. people here, protesters are very vocal. >> i'm here because i don't want to national health care system.

i'm 26 years old, young, and healthy. and i don't think that the united states and taxpayers of the united states should have to pay for a nationalized health care system. i think there is a free market solution we can enact. >> reporter: the event starts here at 7:00, south lakes hig school in reston. there's already a long line of people waiting to get in the door. jim, back to you. >> thanks, jackie. with most virginia schools opening in about two weeks, many are concerned about swine flu. and the impact on school closings. today governor tim kaine assured virginian it is state is ready for the new school year. he says the state and local officials are working together to minimize the impact of swine flu. and to keep schools open. >> there will not be, as of right now, nin kind of automatic closure procedure in place. instead we will i encourage everybody to take the basic precautions for health, keep your kids home if they are sick. but we think we can manage it without school clreurxt eme n en >> reporter: the state has a e for anyone with

solvers in prince william county if you know anything about this. in the city of alexandria, the first black police chief 260-year history of that town. earl cook was appointed today as the new alexandria police chief. he replaces former chief david baker. baker resigned last month after being aeste on dui charges. cook is a 30-year veteran of the police force in alexandria. some interesting ties to the community as well. julie carey has our report. >> would you join me in presenting the chief's badge to our new police chief, earl cook. >> reporter: it was a history making moment as earl cook was handed the chief's badge, greeting with a standing ovation. the city's first african-american chief was welcomed by the first african-american mayor. >> he is a role model, inventor, strong leader. most of all, a well-respected caring person. >> reporter: for cook today marks the pinnacle of the 30-year police career.

$252 million. that pays out $159 million if you just take the cash in one lump. that's one of the biggest windfalls in the history of the game. the mega-millions drawing is scheduled at 11:00 tonight. south carolina's powerbaldwiner claimed his prize today. solomon jackson jr. won a whopping $260 million last wednesday. he bought a single $2 ticket at walmart. jackson is a retired state employee and he's married and would not say whether he plans to take the lump sum or how he plans to spend the money but did say a lot of other people are, in his words, going to be blessed. jackson does not think his life will clang that much. he spent the morning mooing a neighbor's lawn. thomas chapel lives in gilbert, arizona. he fell on some hard times recently and looking for work. what he found will change his life. chapel was just leaving the dmv office one day when he was ts noticed the sign for a cab

driver. he got the job. one of his customers was rita. she used the cab three times a week for rides to dialysis. their relationshipot off to a rocky start. he was a half hour late and then he got lost. she said that drove her crazy. two weeks web by and chapel kept getting sent to bik up rita. she says previously she had different drivers for each trip and these two got to talking. >> i said right a hasn't anybody ever offered you a kidney. >> i cried. because well, at first it was like this -- disbelief. >> i was in the shower. the good lord spoke to me and said thomas, he says, you give her a kidney. >> the next week we did the cross match where they look at different markers on our blood and they told him that if we were any closer in match we would be siblings. i think hay is an angel. >> a transplant has not been scheduled yet. when it is over thomas chapel will have to take severaleeks off of work to recover.

montgomery county fire and rescue units are there. there are reports of a small fire on the tracks inside the station. flames are isolated to one track but there are delays on train traffic between friendship heights and the bethesda station. we are now hearing yet another update tt the fire is now out but do expect delays between those two stations. friendship heights and the bethesda station. no injuries reported. lindsay is at the park. what is going on out there today? >> you know, i would say today you can start to hear the tom brady talk. getting excited about the matchup they have coming up on friday. this is also a day with a lot of intensity because the players have told us that this third preseason game, obviously, a really big deal for them. that's because this will be the game this you are going the see the veterans, starters, playing for a long time. for sure, the first pass likely into the third quarter. for players it is a good measuring stick to find out where they feel like this team is and the first case and

secondly, for getting the help, getting people back healthy. today some of the guys that weren't there with carlos rogershe was not not on field, nor was cartwright. these guys are trying to get themselves back. coach zorn is concerned about cartwright because normally he never misses practice and had a groin injury. they are working to get the guys back out there and the veterans are very excited. you talk about the veterans and the guys that have started for a while. then you go to the rookies and you have a guy like maryland's kevin barnes, cornerback, who is trying to basically solidify himself with playing time. he had a rough go at it to start the preseason. really needs to impress the coaches that he can handle moving from the college game at maryland and up into the nfl. barnes did not play well there the first game but played bet gerns the steelers. third quarter, barnes broke up a pass during one-on-one coverage with the receiver on the outside. ran the perfect route, jumped in and knocked it away.
