this afternoon, senator edward kennedy left his home for the final time and at this hour the senator's body being taken to his brother's presidential library. good afternoon, everyone. welcome to "news4 at 4:00." i'm jim handly. >> i'm eun yang in for pat lawson muse. this afternoon massachusetts and the nation formally began mourning senator ted kennedy, the man known as the lion of the senate is on his way to boston to lie in repose and amid outpouring off motion. >> these are live pictures, tens of thousands, perhaps more, have lined the interstate. they will be there throughout the night to pay respects. the hearst carrying senator kennedy's body is now making its way to boston right now from hyannis port. steve handelsman has the latest on today's developments. >> reporter: senator kennedy began his final journey on the shoulders of the military honor guard. his casket carried from the family's legendary home at hyannis port. the whole kennedy clan gathered.

joyfully and tearfully remembering the family patriarch. earlier there had been a private family mass. the procession would leave cape cod and make its way through massachusetts neighborhoods on its way to boston. along the way, throngs of people who think of ted kennedy as a hero like the disabled for whom kennedy pushed through the americans with disabilities act. in boston's historic north end. >> i love him. i can't talk about it or i will cry. >> heard about the motor cade passing through. so we thought we would show our respects. >> reporter: ted kennedy helped her and her had you band to become u.s. citizens. >> we thought he was one of the people that helped the immigrants come onboard so i think like myself being a -- a lot of people have a lot of respect for the kennedys. >> reporter: joe, too, respected ted kennedy. >> if it wasn't for him we

only about 20 acres burned there. firefighters near detroit battled a ferocious fire at a chemical plant this morning. flames and thick black smoke shot hundreds of feet into the air after an explosion at the sterling services chemical plant. hundreds of people were evacuated from nearby neighborhoods. the fire disrupted traffic and amtrak train service. firefighters were able to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby tanks. there are no reports of injuries. cause of that fire is still under investigation. >> authorities in california believed they fou a woman who was kidnapped when she was a child. 18 years ago. 11-year-olj.c. dugard dispyred outside her home back in 1991. sheriff's officials say a woman has come forward now claiming to be dugard. dna tests are being conducted by investigators say that they are almost certain she's telling the truth. at the time of the abduction, witnesses reported seeing two people take the little girl. sheriff's officials say two people have now been taken into

custody. u.s. economy is not as bad as it was. that's the word from banking officials here in washington. while the economy seems poised for a turnaround, many are still worried about jobs. here's brian mooar. >> reporter: ford is add inging few thousand work eers. for the alt owe industry, it has been a hot summer thanks to uncle sam's cash for clunkers program. but the u.s. economy is still struggling to get traction. >> almost all of it is stimulus related. so if the stimulus begins to fade early next year, as it will, then we may need to see mo more. >> reporter: gross domestic product fell 1% in the second quarter. first-time jobless claims improve from 580,000 two weeks ago to 570,000 last week. but the real concern is about the 1.5 million unemployed

the george washington university campus. new organic grocery store. look at four other stories. d.c. man is dead after being shot by police officer early this morning. it happened in a gas station in the 3300 block of benning road northeast. the man was banging on the window of the cashier booth with a gun in his hand when he refused to load his weapon an officer shot him. he was taken to a local hospital where he later died and the officer has been put on administrative leave while the investigation continues. d.c. police are also investigating the series of robberies near george washington university today. all of the robberies happened near the foggy bottom metro station and involved a group of young people attacking their victim. campus police are warning students to be aware of that their surrounding and avoid walking at night alone. they alswant students to use the school's bus system when possible. and take taxis when traveling off campus. residents of d.c. pet worth

. police in california uncovered a clue in the case of a murdered model. investigators believe her reality tv star husband killed her and later took his own life. miguel almaguer has the latest. >> reporter: police are confident ryan jenkins killed jasmine fiore but the homicide investigation isn't over yet. yesterday her mercedes-benz was found in parking lot. investigator say that it could be a crime scene. fiore's body was found mutilated to presumably delay its identification. with the car, investigators say they will be able to determine if jenkins killed fiore alone. >> it is very important.

a piece of evidence that will assist our investigation. so once the forensic team does their thing, then we will know what we have. >> reporter: married in march, friends say jenkins and fiore's relationship was passionate and violent. >> they had a rocky relationship. i was very supportive for her to be, you know, independent and, you know, she didn't really need him. she had a lot going for her. >> fiore wasn't the first beautiful young woman to call jenkins violent. in 2007, he pled guilty to punching a former girlfriend in the back of the head. he was sentenced to anger management and domestic violence counseling. jenkins had a former fiancee. she called him a good person opinion as police looked to close the case they are not the only ones with unanswered questions. friends and family members of both the suspect and victim may

never know the motive for this homicide. miguel almaguer, news4. nasa is shooting for a shuttle launch late tomorrow night. it will need a third attempt. mission managers hope to launch at one minute to midnight tomorrow. they have considered trying for a liftoff early tomorrow morning but engineers wanted more time to study the fuel valve problem that scuttled the second launch attempt. the problem popped up tuesday evening just hours before the launch. the first launch attempt was called off because of thunderstorms. well, it may be late august but according to travel experts, you can still find some cheap deals out there on flights and hotels over the labor day weekend. how cheap? travelocity crunched the numbers and found that some plane fares are down 10% to 20% compared to last year. hotel rates across the country

sunny and sticky. when is that rain coming? >> i think as early a could midnight. we could see a few showers to star to make their way across the area. it is looking like tomorrow this time it will be fairly wet across the area. so showers. we will talk about how that is going to have an impact as danny is moving up the coast. let's head outside and it is sticky outside. we have the humidity that's been on the rise today. the dew point temperatures 60 degrees. right now we are hanging nd90 90 degrees. a lot of locations, upper 80s today. it is after today that that he will be backing off. dew point temperatures 61 degrees. factor it all in and the moisture feels like 91 degrees outside. temperatures across the area bubble of warmth. raleigh, north carolina, 89. close to that in cincinnati,

ohio. st. ui as well. around memphis, tennessee, but again, after today, we are going to start to see cooler temperatures with highs getting into the upper 70s to around 80 degrees. that's pretty good. look at the dew point temperatures. that's what we will continue to be on the rise. seeing numbers around 65, 66 degrees. in not 70 like atlanta, georgia. lot of moisture around their area but folk news on that moisture. southern michigan, areas of southern wisconsin. this is associated wit a weather feature that has been moving through our area. stalled out just to the south of us. stalled out weather front and we did l deal with that with for the next 28 hours. danny coming up the coast. right now the convection, the showers, storms, the rain, is on the eastern side of the storm. so it is really loaded up on the eastern side. that's good news as it makes its way up the coast. but again, we had so many locations around prince george's county. around anne arundel county.

maryland'sastern shore and eastern maryland, too, that got so much rain during the last storm with bill moving up the coast. the ground is saturated and could still seelooding in spots. there will definitely be rough is your of and rip tides. dangerous rip tides and big waves as danny makes its way up the coast. it is a tropical storm now back out of the way so you can see all the stats. there at 50 miles per hour. could easily get up to 74 miles per hour. it is early saturday that will be making its way just east of our area. the outer banks accelerating northward up to new england by saturday night. that's the latist with danny. as far as your future cast and what we can expect showers developing around midnight. we will see more rain coming through a area tomorrow. pretty good rain. there is the weather front. eventually, again, we will have tropical storm, probably hurricane by then. danny making its way up the coast. our temperatures dropping from the upper 80s to low 80s. it is going to be a humid start to the day tomorrow.

battle with their attackers. byrd and melanie bill wrgs killed last month inside their home in florida. they were known for adopting special needs children, many of se at one inside theou the time of the murders. today reporters were shown grainy surveillance video of the billings, putting their arms in the air and apparently trying to protect one of the children. a judge allowed the media to view but not copy or distribute the video. seven people have been charged with first-degree murder. looks like michael vick is on his way out of bankruptcy. the new philadelphia eagle left a virginia courtroom today after a judge approved vick's plan to repay $20 million of debt. part of that plan will require vick to liquidate $9 million in assets including his houses, boats, and expensive suvs. the once disgraced nfl star served 18 months in federal prison on dogfighting charges. he takes the field again for the first time tonight in philly.
