good evening. >> i'm wendy sitting in for doreen. it's an emotional day and night in massachusetts. thousands saying good-bye to one of the country's preeminent politicians. steve handlesman is live in boston tonight with a look at the crowd and scene there. steve. >> reporter: good evening from the jfk library in boston where 11:00 p.m. was to be when they ended this visitation for the night, but instead, these mourners just keep arriving. hour after hour they came by the thousands to the kennedy library not far from downtown boston. ordinary americans who wanted to pay their last respects to the senator they called teddy. many visiblyoved as they filed by senator kennedy's coffin. >> i was completely overwhelmed actually. >> the civil rights and minimum wage and he really was a voice for the poor. you know, the common person. >> reporter: the line of waiting

mourners stretched into the night. suddenly along the line came senator kennedy's widow, vicky, hugging and kissing even those she'd never met, returning their respect and affection for teddy. >> we're so honored that so many people have come out to pay tribute to my husband, and i just wanted to thank them. >> reporter: the senator's coffin arrived before night fall borne by a military honor guard from washington. nearly 100 members from the kennedy clan were on hand. here caroline kennedy, chris kennedy, and robert kennedy jr. the kennedy family saying thank you to americans as americans said thank you and good-bye to the family patriarch, senator edward kennedy. as long as these mourners keep coming here tonight, this jfk library will stay open. from boston i'm steve handlesman reporting. back to you. >> thank you, steve. >> preparations are under way

for the burial at rir ar ling ton national cemetery eechlt be buried with congressional honors on saturday. a bugleer will play taps and they will fire 21 volleys and there will be pallbearers represents each branch the military. senator kennedy will be buried near the graves of his brothers john and robert kennedy. it will be closed to the public all day for the private service. we're learning more tonight about a sophisticated crime ring that got ahold of bank accounts belonging to federal reserve chairman ben bernanke. he and his wife were not the only victims, but the story shows how easy it is to have your identity stolen. craig melvin joins us from starbucks on capitol hill where the bernankes' story begins to unfold. >> reporter: earlier this week it was announced he would stay on as fed chief. around the same time some documents began to surface details how bernanke's wife stop

at this starbucks became part of a complex and elaborate scheme. >> our assessment is for slower growth but positive growth into next year. >> reporter: last fall while fed chairman ben bernanke was trying to figure out how best to resuscitate an ailing economy he was dealing with money issues at home. around 11:20 in the morning on august 7, 2008 as his wife sat at a table inside this starbucks on capitol hill, someone swiped her purse off the paback of her chair. inside the purse her wallet, credit cards and money, and social security card examine checks. six days later $900 went missing from ben and anna bernanke's account. while it's not known how much the thieves stole from the fed chief and his wife, investigators believe it's merely a drop in the bucket. here's a look at the scope of the scheme. they say the 89 known victims so far are from these nine states

and the district, in all they made off with about $2.1 million. this affidavit spells out how investigators believe they did it. they used various techniques, some picked pockets and some sifted through the mail and infiltrated offices and sle from desks and purses. once they had the loot, investigators say the crooks would make counterfeit i.d.s with the names of the victims t the pictures of the thieves. they would use rubber band and bundle the stolen goods and ship to various parts of the country where other parts of the ring were waiting to walk into banks and white counterfeit checks. one local man admitted guilt. last month clyde gray pled guilty, but they believe gray had lots of help. fact, he's one of ten named in the affidavit. now, today the fed chair ben bernanke released a statement saying in part identity theft is a serious crime that affects millions of americans each year.

our family was one of 500 separate incidents traced to one crime ring. i'm grateful for the law enforcement officers who worked to solve and prevent these financial crimes. back to you. >> thank you, craig. michael vick ran out onto an nfl field tonight for the first time in two and a half years. dan haley is here now to tell us how he did, how he was received. what did you think? >> he was received really well. no boos, no banners. wasn't quite as exciting, i think, because he didn't play a ton, but he was back out there. he entered the playn a second play and was used sparingly and lined up quarterback and receiver playing a total of six plays after 18 months in prison, more than two years away from the game. the eagles really easing vick back into action. michael vick said he was not going to be nervous for this game. and he didn't look very nervous. head coach andy reed did not make him wait long. on the second play of the game, vick enters the game.

you can see it looked like almost a standing ovation from the crowd. in the shotgun he pitches, a little shovel pass with sean mccoy. that's a four-yard gain. he was 4 for 4 for 19 yards in the game. vick ran once for a 1-yard gain. thiss probably his best pass right here. looking like michael vick of old. let's go to michael vick live now at the podium. >> how many snaps a game do you envision you might take part in? are you okay with being a roll guy, a play here play there guy? >> i want to help this football team win, whatever i have to do. so i have the capacity. i want to be able to make plays and say that i contribute and i helped this football team reach that one common goal, and that's winning at the end of the day and hopefully winning a championship. so, you know, i'm just humbled and want to sit back and learn

a raid at a pawnshop at prince georges county brought in hundreds of stolen items today. authorities seized merchandise flhe parkway pawnshop. all of the items are brand new and appear to have come from local big box stores. this is just the latest raid in a county-wide effort to crack down on second-hand stores accepting stolen goods. police say they will continue to investigate before they make any arrests. a police officer pulled a baby from a burning car this morning after the child's father e.lyrted ran away from thertvecl the esarurpicte es from the scene. after fi l aulrpiveedri d to pull over a driver for speeding, but the driver kept going and ended up crashing into a stone wall on rub by road. the car caught fire. police say the driver got out

and started to run away, ut b the officer caug tpehe bus sct andu cuffed him. that's when the guy said his 7-month-old daughter was still in the burning car. >> i was able to get her out. i got her out of the car still in her car seat. i sat her down in the grass and went back to address the driver. >> the baby is okay. this occurred in prince william county. the father is in the hospital facing several charges. the police officer from south carolina has been fired for beating a teenager with a flashlight. the dashboard cam video showed several teenagers on an atv in the streets in south carolina. the driver refused to stop, even as some of his passengers bailed out and ran away. sergeant eddie webb says the suspect ran four stop signs before he pulled over. he used the flashlight to knock him off the atv and hit him several times when he was down. the chief fired webb when he saw

there's a scheduling issue in prince georges county schools that's causing all kinds of problems. for the fourth day in a row students were without classes and tonight angry parents and school board members wanted to know why. derekard is here with more on this. derek. >> reporter: at the beginning of the school year when this started out, they had about 3400 students that didn't have the proper schedules or any schedules at all. they've worked it down to about 1900. they have to rustle to write schedules out by hand, but the problem still exists. tonight they came here to the coty administration building, the school administration building, where parents and school superintendent and teachers and school board members weighed in. >> we have temporarily

reassigned central office staff to provide assistance to our schools and are working around the clock to ensure that all students have schedules. >> reporter: prince georges coun school superintendent reiterated his apology to these affected by the scheduling problem. they got the number down to under 2,000 systemwide. parents are not pleasedt came to this. >> right now they tell us it will be resolved by monday. i've been told each day that it was going to be resolved, and it's still not resolved. >> i have schedule now, but on the first day i didn't va have a schedule. >> reporter: at issue a computer system called school max that's been around since last year, and there were other problems such as grades not properly reported. but the scheduling issue that plagued the start of the current school year has raised the ire of board members even some that

languished in auditoriums without classes. >> i told him you're going to enjoy ninth grade. the first thing he told me is that i'm not sure i really like high school. >> reporter: board members questioned why these problems weren't seen sooner. the president of the software company said the scheduling software was rolled out late and data was put in late, not until may. >> if you had a larger window, you could schedule all the students correct. >> reporter: the superintendent of county schools has pledged this will not happen again, and he's pledged that everyone should have a schedule by monday and they'll work through the weekend if they have to. we're live in prince georges county. back to you in the studio. >> thanks, derek. college campuses in our area and across the nation are preparing for predictions of a widespread outbreak of the swine flu. a lot of schools send out e-mails now with reminders about the preventive measures like washing your hands and vaccinations and other encourage students to prepare swine flu kits that include

over-the-counter medication for fever, a thermometer, tissues, hand sanitizer, soup and other items. schools designate empty dorms where sick students can be isolated and students with symptoms are urged to stay away from classrooms and common areas. meanwhile, how's danny? how's your friend danny? >> my friend danny has weakened a little more. >> i love it. jus doesn't know what he's doing out there. getting all discombobulated. outside today it was a hazy day. we have a few showers and thundershowers, more than a few out there in montgomery county. our temperature outside right now after the high temperature of 91 degrees, 79 degrees last ought wasn't too bad. we've had more 90-degree days this august a lot more than in july. look at the high temperatures around the country today. 94 down to the south, and because of the warm, humid air that we have, look at the air up to our north. we have this weather front that is slowly coming in over us with

the humid air riding up and over it. it's set the stage for evening hours and thundershowers we have around us right now. you can see folks into parts of fairfax county and parts of loudon county getting a fshower right now. they've headed into the river. a little bit of lightning out there. not severe weather, but i think it's a sign of what we see tomorrow as we go through the day tomorrow. there you can see those showers down to our south, a lot more into parts of north carolina, into south carolina around charleston, too. none of this is associated with danny. ocean city got friends out there. it's still mighty fine. danny out here, and because of the circulation around it, you can see almost all of it is out to the east. there's now a tropical storm watch out from around cape hatteras all the way south along the outer banks of north carolina. there's the latest position. winds are 45 miles per hour.

every indication continues to be that it will stay safely, safely off the coast, but still bringing some heavy suffrf. it will move into new england and cause nasty weather around parts of new england. so tomorrow morning that humidity comes in, and as we go through the day with the humid flow we have, i think more showers and possibly afternoon thundershowers, and then as we get into late on saturday, there is what's left of danny continuing to move off. so overnight for the remainder of the evening, we continue to see the clouds and scattered showers around. mperatures when you get up tomorrow morning will be into the high 60s to around 70. a few showers lingering. we have that weather boundary near us. through the day a lot of clouds around. temperatures tomorrow will be not as high as they were today. temperatures tomorrow about with an east to northeasterly wind only about 80 degrees. showers and thundershowers during tomorrow evening, and as we get into later on tomorrow

>> i don't think we expected him to play as early as we did, either. he was in there very early. short and sweet for michael vick. the eagles wanted to make his return to the nfl as easy as possible. he was in for six plays and completed four passes, two of them shovel passes, which are about as easy as you can get. let's go up to philadelphia. michael vick waited a long time to get back on the football field. philadelphia fans giving him a standing ovation when he entered the game on the second play. michael vick lined up as a quarterback out of the shotgun. the shovel pass with sean mccoy good for a four-yard gain. vick only got to throw the ball downfield one time. he connected with hank basket, the reality tv star for a 13-yard gain. vick, 4 for 4 on passing. not a bad percentage there. second quarter, jacksonville with the ball. david to nate, and pop by samuel. he fumbles it. he says thank you very much. i'll take the ball and the touchdown.

the eagles kick a late field goal to win 38-22. the game means nothing, but it did mean a lot for vick. >> it was great to finally get out there and get my feet wet, get a feel for the game again. see if the speed was still the same as it was two years ago, and you know, it felt the same. it's like riding a bike. you never forget how to do it. >> michael vick doing a whole lot of smiling tonight. preseason game number three for the skins tomorrow night. the last real dress rehearsal before the big show starts. starters should play at least a half, and they will be tested by a strong patriots team on both sides of the ball. that's tonight night. today the guys were all smiles at the welcome home luncheon. ♪ hundreds of fans packed the

the shuttle "discovery" is still on the launchpad. it may go up late tomorrow night. it's the third attempt by nasa to send "discovery" to the space station. they're hoping to launch one minute to midnight tomorrow. engineers wanted more time to study the fuel valve problem that scuttled that second launch attempt. the first attempt was called off because of thunderstorms. when "discovery" does finally take f,t of iwiarwi cry c anry astronaut from our area, patrick

forester. football season again in the district. we're not talking about nfl preseason stuff. this evening dozens of excited kids gathered at the ridge road rec center for season-opening pep rally. they're kicking off the second season of a pop warner football league in the city. the first games will be played on saturday, and those kids on friday night got to scrape them off the wall. they're going to be so jacked up. and that's what we say. good for them.
