threatening rain outside. >> it is threatening to rain and i suspect most of us are going to need umbrellas just once before your saturdays through. outside right now, very low overcast hanging out in washington this morning. off to a very humid start as well. here's a track of doppler. here you can see the light rain showers across central virginia and the mountains of west virginia encroaching in on the city of washington. rain showers are a part of our forecast. temperatures are in the mid-70s right now. so it's definitely feeling like summertime. it's been fairly light except under one or two of those lonely showers. visibility is starting to come up. that's good news. we'll get one or two breaks of sunshine today but there's also a chance of one or two rumbles of thunder before the day is through. sunshine. we'll talk about that in the forecast coming up. kimberly? >> we look forward to that. america is preparing to say good-bye to one of its most beloved political leaders. senator edward kennedy will be laid to rest in arlington national cemetery today.

we have live team coverage with derrick ward at arlington national cemetery. right now his body is lying i n repose at thejfk y.librar but first michelle franzen in boston where senator kennedy's funeral will take place in less than an hour. >> family and members of congress are meeting here, the library a short time away. we want to show you a live picture. ted kennedy's wife, now widow, vicki kennedy is greeting some of the delegates there today from the house and the senate. they will make their way up to the church in a short time and file int the church. the boistrous senator from massachusetts and the youngest of nine in the kennedy family certainly had a special connection to this basilica. a place where he came when his daughter cara was getting treated for cancer and then returned when he was diagnosed for cancer. now once again he returns.

three daes of public service to mourn ted kennedy's death and celebrate his life culminate this morning with a high mass at our lady of perpetual help basilica in boston's mission hill. president obama will deliver the eulogy. on the eve of the funeral, they gather. an emotional night with tears, humor, and tribute from those who knew him best. from lifelong friends. >> be at peace, my friend. america will be in your debt forever. >> reporter: the senatorial colleagues on both sides of the aisle. >> i miss fighting in public and joking with him in the backgrou background. >> the place won't be the same without him. >> reporter: a man who followed his brothers into politics and following their deaths became the master of the senate. >> john fitzgerald kennedy

arlington national cemetery, where he will be buried near his brothers jack and rock earth. i'm michelle franzen in boston. now back to you. >> michelle, thank you. after today's funeral mass, people in the nation's capitol will have a chance to pay respects to senator kennedy. his funeral procession will travel through the district before ending at arlington national cemetery and that's where "news 4's" derrick ward is live. good mornin morning, derrick. >> reporter: good morning. as you see behind me, one of the iconic symbols of this hallowed place. as a veteran of the korean war, senator kennedy is el ilkable to be buried here. it was a sad inevitability that these plans would come to fruition given the state of the senator's recent health. now senator ted kennedy's grave will be about 100 feet from

robert kennedy's grave and about 200 feet from john f. kennedy's grave. there's a lot of underground infrastructure associated with the eternal flame and the reflective pool. so cemetery officials had to select a site that avoided the structures but aligned the proximity of his site to his brothers. this was a site often frequented by the senator in the past. >> senator kennedy was a regular visitor here at arlington cemetery. oftentimes he would be here and we would not know about it. other times he would sket it. other time he would appear visiting his brothers' graves to my left on their anniversaries and, of course, have other visitsbr hbyeeus h jimby himsel with a special friend. >> reporter: now, the funeral procession is expected to arrive here at about 5:30. the public will not be allowed at the grave site. however the closest they can get is a quarter mile away and

they'll be allowed to align the drive. tomorrow the site will be open to the public. you can expect to find a wooden cross and a marker there. there will be a path constructed as well. sometime in the future a more elaborate smarker is expected. >> historic day for our town and country. thank you, derrick. well, health care, immigration, civil rights. senator ted kennedy made his mark on all of these during his long career on capitol hill and joining us now is professor emeritus. thank you for being with us. what did you think about saying senator dodd said one kennedy inspired us, one kennedy challenged us, and this kennedy changed us? >> well, this kennedy had it very tough because he had to do it against tremendous odds. i was founding chair for afro-american studies outside of

waltham. 20 years later i was at the kennedy school. by that time this man was a revered figure, but with eight years into the reagan administration and a lot of what i think people have come to understand about him was his courage because that was the era of the tremendous backlash a against social policy. and so he had to do a lot of th against tremendous odds. >> what are your thoughts today? you've had a few days to process now his passing. has there been something that hasn't been said that you want to pung yat? >> no. i think most of it has been said. i think when one look at the african-american community, what would dr. martin lieu third king say or do? i think a lot of his dream would not have been fulfilled without a ted kennedy in the center, and i think one hases to look at that legacy against the backdrop

of what america was trying to do in the 1960s to bring forward th social agenda. >> i heard chris matthews call barack obama the fourth brother. what do you make of that? >> well, yes. i think that's certainly true. he had the responsibility to carry forward the legacy that they built. >> you feel that strongly, that the president -- the torch has been passed to the president, that he really must be the one to carry on the kennedy legacy? >> i do. many people have been asking, well, who will do this now? well, let's think about thi for a second. we're now at the beginning of another democratic administration and it's uniquely the respondent of this president to carry many of the agenda items forward. >> i appreciate you saying that because many say where are the lions now. you do feel this sadness in your heart to think these leaders can't all be gone, they can't be in the past. surely there are great leaders to come.

you're looking live inside the jfk presidential library in boston where senator edward kennedy is lying in repose. his funeral will begin in a little -- less than an hour now. we'll have live coverage throughout the morning and the afternoon here on nbc 4 and on our website. a d.c. police officer is expected to be okay after being shot in the leg this morning.

the officer was trying to arrest a drug suspect at 17th and gail street northeast. police say the officer had his gun out and then the suspect grabbed it. the two wrestled and the gun went off hitting the officer in the leg. the suspect did not get far. he is in custody. according to police, the officer's injury is not life-threatening, and he should be just fine. >> two more d.c. police officers were injured in a crash. a driver hit them near the intersection of 9th and u streets northwest. here's what police are telling us. the officers had stopped on the side of the road when an suv hit their cruiser from behind. the driver of that suv is under arrest suspected of driving drunk. both officers are expected to be all right. a man killed in a hit-and-run, now d.c. police say they got a look at the car that did it. this happened around 2:30 a.m. friday, august 14th. you may remember. police say 61-year-old curtis general was trying to cross suitland parkway.

falling out to the south and west of washington that's coming our way. current temperature down at national airport where you're looking at the north end of the runway, 47 degrees. the dew point, very steamy indeed. 71 for dew point. washington has not been below 60 degrees since june 1st. and bring that up because i think there's a chance that in the next seven days at least once washington may drop back below the -degree mark for the first time since early june. right now it's 73 in frederick, maryland, 73 in st. mary's county. 61 in lov lly culpeper. there are some light to moderate rain showers moving in on interstate 81. this one little band of showers coming out of culpeper county headed into northern fauquier county and prince william county. so there is a chance for light showers here e over the next little while. the heavier showers and thunderstorms with what was danny are staying well offshore but it's not going to be a good

big dog. firefighters rush in to save him. good morning. i'm kimberly suiters. thanks for watching "news 4 today." just ahead, a check on what's making news this morning. first we want to say good-bye to the patriarch of camelot, senator ted kennedy. in just minutes his funeral mass is set to begin in boston. it's expected to draw in 1500 people. afterward people will have a chance to say good-bye. the funeral procession will travel through the district before ending at arlington national semty and that's where "news 4's" derrick ward joins us live where prep rags are under way. derrick? >> reporter: gd morning. indeed the prep rags have been under way for some time now. if you take a look you can see the port call, one of those symbols strongly associated with

arlington national cemetery and it will be part of the panoramic associated grave of the three kennedy brothers. it was prompted by a call from senator kennedy's staff as his health took a turn for the worst. now, he will be laid to rest about 100 feet from robert f. kennedy's grave and 200 feet from john f. kennedy's grave a. it allows a site line among the three grave as while avoiding existing underground infrastructure under the cemetery. initially you will see something akin to the existing memorial for robert f. kennedy. >> if you look at robert f. kennedy's grave you'll notice a foot marker cross and a birket date. the same arrangements have been made for senator kennedy. >> reporter: his body is expected to arrive at andrews air force base. from there the capitol. about 4:30 a prayer service and

early yesterday morning a man walking his dog found their bodies. they had been shot and killed. police identified the victims at 19-year-old david mets ler and 18-year-old heidi childs. investigators have increased patrols in the area. they say this does appear to be a random crime. a frightening ordeal came to a very happy ending in prince george's downdy yesteay when firefighters pulled a very big dog out of a well. it's a call firefighters don't train for but they were happy to help as the well began to fill with rainwater. jackie bensen has that story. >> reporter: after spending hours barking and women perring at the bottom of a well, cujo, all 120 pounds of him was raised by a firefighter. he noted wit as good thing that cujo is a gentle giant. >> it's not something we train for every day and i was glad he was s ally friendly.

>> pull him up. >> daniel ellis was overjoyed to be reunited with the 3-year-old. the dog had an abrasion over one eye but was otherwise remarkably uninjured after his fall of some 30 feet. >> he's been there since 12:00. this is my son cujo. they d a fine job. >> the urgent call came around 1:00 p.m. from the home on o glen drive in suitland. first responders found an unusual situation. the long unused well was located directly below a deck that cujo had apparently crawled under. a cave-in unit was requested. firefighters had to saw through pressure-treated boards to lower air supply down to the trapped dog, and the water was rising. >> the call came in right when we were having a terrible storm. it was pouring down rain. there was water pouring into this hole. the water was filling up the hole around the dog. >> reporter: just after 5:00 firefighters managed to rig a

harness to fit the dog and travis lambert descended to see a big face with scared eyes. >> he was happy to have someone down there to get him out. >> reporter: firefighters tell us it's obvious the well was there for a very, very long time. possibly people were unaware of it. it is now being secured. in suitland, jack can benson, "news 4." >> glad that story had a happy ending. thank you. we're still waiting on the medical examiner to determine what killed a celebrity deejay in his home. deejay a.m. was found dead yesterday afternoon. police found a crack pipe and prescription pills. his real name was adam goldstein. he was noun for dating stars like nicole richie. he had openly discussed previous drug addictions but said he was clean. today in 2005 hurricane katrina battered the gulf coast.

out. outside right now it's a cloudy start indeed. not a lot of rain has come down yet, so the sidewalks are mostly dry at this point in time. our temperature at national airport, 74 degrees with a very high dew point at 71. a light northwesterly breeze at only 5 miles per hour. as i was mentioned we have not beenheelow 60 in washington when we dropped down to 55. i bring that up because a real taste of autumn is coming our way. 75 in fairfax county. 72 in manassas. martinsburg and charlestown and all near the panhandle of west virginia all near the 70-degree mark this morning. a check of doppler shows remnants of what was danny, now no more than a tropical depression racing up the coastline, big waves and rip currents are still a serious issue at the beaches but nonetheless not a good beach day, but the storm will be staying mostly offshore. here's a look at the local doppler. a few sprinkles. also toward warrington and fauquier county. just to the west of winchester

and here. this is gradually pushing off to the east. as a result we'll have showers in the forecast. it's not going to be a complete washout of a saturday. not gog to be a washout. just have to have your backup plans ready to go. satellite picture shows there was danny racing up the east coast. it's going to continue to move mainly offshore but some of the wis could grace portions of the jersey coast, portions of eastern long island and cape cod, massachusetts, but it's moving to the northeast at 27 miles per hour and it's losing its tropical characteristics very, very quickly. not much of a tropical threat. so that's definitely welcome news. for us, more clouds and sunshine. might get a little sunny break from time to time, and there's also a chance for one or two rumbles. no severe weather expected today. that's definitely welcome news. here's the all-important forecast. 80 today. tomorrow, the sunshine does try and make a comeback. might have a few showers

you led almost more than 100 laps but you got caught for speeding on pit row. yo u were so vocal about that at the time. that was the race you said you bet the life of your children and your wife you weren't speeding. >> i swear on the lives of my children and my wife i was not speeding. they made a mistake. >> did you get a lot of grief about that? >> not really because my wife and children -- son was very surprised when i said that. she said for him to say that he didn't do anything wrong. i wouldn't put my kids' name on the line for anything. >> and he said you were surprised he said that. what is that like when you hear something like that as a wife, you know what i mean? >> it's first time he ever spoke dictly. obviously we're supportive. no. you're raci
