today's ceremonies in many ways reflected the man larger than life. brian mooar begins our coverage tonight. >> reporter: on a day both somber and celebratory, senator ted kennedy tookis place alongside the brothers he idolized. in the end, he was an icon in his own right and thousands lined the streets of nation's capital to say good-bye. >> i'm conservative republican but i'm here to pay respects. >> his last journey took him to the u.s. capitol where he was saluted by those who served with and for lim. >> he knew he was only great because had he great people supporting him and he knew the value of good staff, and that's why he was so successful. >> the day began in boston where a family considered american royalty mourned alongside the nation's political elite, among them four american presidents. >> the greatest expectations were placed upon ted kennedy's

shoulders because of who he was. but he is your passed them all because of who he became. >> and we slowly made it to the top. >> son tedy junior stirred the crowd to tears but there were also moments of laughter snee even taught me some of life's harder lessons, such as how to like republicans. >> the day followed the path of ted kennedy's life from massachusetts to washington. with brothers john and robert at his side. honored by a new generation of kennedys who some day may hear their family's call to service. from beginning to end, the services were sharply focused on family, both political and the kennedys, literally bus loads of children, grandchildren and a sprawling extended family paying tribute to its fallen patriarch. brian mooar it, nbc news at the arlington national cemetery.

>> and as the busload of family and friends that brian just mentioned, as that bus load made tats way through downtown d.c. and toward the capitol, the staffers and folks who lined the steps applaud and cheered. it was a home come today for the late senator ted kennedy. emma lang is a grad constituent at gw but born i massachusetts. >> i grew up with ted kennedy. he's been senator since well i was born. >> thousands descended on the capitol and lined the streets that surrounded it saturday. regardless of age, so many here seemed to grow up with senator ted kennedy. they brought their signs, their kids, their pets and their memories. >> we grew up with him, the civil rights issues. he was always for social justice and peace and the poor. >> i think he represented people in massachusetts quite well. we're very proud of the work that he did on our behalf. >> while some were here to thank

kennedy, others merely wanted a front row seat to history. >> the kennedy family are like the family of america. i figure since i here, i might as well check it out. >> onlookers gathered for a last glimpse. meanwhile at the capitol where he served more than 47 years, many of kennedy's current and former staffers stood on the senate steps for two hours and when theion arrived, they all roared. >> well, i've seen a lot of processions and a lot of ceremonies in this town since i've been here. i've never seen anything like this. >> lester highman ran the massachusetts democratic party in the late 60s. he's one of many of kennedy's former staffer who's became successful. melly miller worked for the late senator longer than just about anyone else. >> i was with him for 37 years. >> 37 years. >> who would want to leave? he was at all of our weddings, at our funerals, bedsides.

the loyalty was a two-way street. that's why you have the entire steps filled with his former staff. >> the thousands of it others here seemed to agree as they waived flags, sang songs and wiped away tears, all seemed to have something in common. >> we loved senator kennedy. >> and tt was the prevailing sentiment throughout the day from boston this morning to here at the nation's capitol, the capitol you just saw here and to here at arlington this evening, as well. so many turned out today to show love and respect for the late senator kennedy. there was one moment that struck most of us today. he served longer than all but two senators in the history of the u.s. senate. strom thurmond from south carolina and robert byrd from west virginia. they wheeled robert byrd out today shortly before the precession arrived. and all of the folks broke into thunderous applause.

today to discuss governor mark sanford's fate and not one lawmaker defended him. republicans, however will, wait to make any decisions on impeachment till the state ethics panel completes its investigation. critics are questioning his use of state and private aircraft after he slipped away in june to visit his mistress in argentina. two people on opposite ends of the country are very, very wealthy tonight. they had the winning tickets in last night's megamegamillions. friday night's jackpot was $330 million. that means the winning ticks are each worth about $166 million. they were purchased in san gabrielle, california and from this convenience store in the bronx. the jackpot had grown to one of the largest ever in u.s. history. coming up tonight on news4 at 11:00, our coverage of the final farewell to senator kennedy continues after the break. maria shriver talks about the final year of her uncle's life

senator kennedy's burial at arlington national cemetery capped a week in which thousands of mourners filed past his casket in boston to pay their final respects. his niece maria shriver appears on "meet the press" tomorrow morning and says the public outpouring of support for kennedy while he battled brain cancer made a huge difference. >> watching this final year was beautiful because i think, you know there have been a lot of

things written about tedy over the years and it hasn't all been complimentary. and i think for someone to have that kind of love come at you is a very powerful thing that very few people i think ever experience in their lifetime. >> shriver says her uncle also inspired hope because he never gave up. you can see the entire interview on "meet the press" tomorrow morning right here on nbc4. and an emotional reunion in china today for a young maryland man, the 17-year-old was reunited with his biological family today for the first time in 11 years. that's christian norris from easton, maryland. in 199 he ended up in an orphanage after bei found under a bridge in china. he was adopted by a maryland family in 2001. christian found his birth parents using the internet. >> i always wanted to find them.

maryland, 75 princeeorges county. here's a check of doppler. not a lot of rain across the area but a few lonely showers moving into portions of northern calvert county from annapolis to shadyside, eastern prince georges county, almost on top of andrews air force base. and a few light sprinkles down to the south of washington. the stronger thunderstorms are well into portions of delaware and moving away from us. no real concerns for severe weather tonight. temperatures in the mid-70s here. a lot cooler back to our northwest. chicago 59. but the dewpoints back here, 40s and low 50s. that's the air mass coming our way. it starts arriving during the course of the day tomorrow. we'll have a real preview of autumn weather around here as we go through the upcoming work and yes, indeed, kids, school week. tonight, cloudy skies. lingering showers can't be you'lled out.
