good morning, everybody. welcome to "news4 today." it's sunday, august 30th. a look at the day's top stoeries in a moment, but first let's get a chk of the weather. good morning, chuck. >> happy sunday, everybody. hopefully your weekend is going well. we had a nice day yesterday but plenty of august humidity around. today, that humidity is starting to take its leave of the washington area. here is a check on the city camera this morning, as advertised moments ago. increasing amounts of blue sky over head and it will turn out to be a nice day today. 75 degrees downtown, and 76 in annapolis, and 73 in montgomery county, maryland. and here is the real story, though. dew points, which yesterday were hovering near 70 degrees, today

are back down in the upper 50s and near 60 in many locations around town. even though it will be warm, it will not be that humid of a day. and a check of autumn weather coming our way in a few minutes. another american political i con is buried now at arlington national scemetery. those that knew him best got a chance to pay him a final tribute. brian moore reports. >> reporter: senator ted kennedy took his place alongside the brothers he idealized. thousands lined the streets of the nation's capital to say good by. >> i am a conservative republican but i am here to pay my respect. >> reporter: his last journey took him to the u.s. capital

kennedys, and we some day may hear their family's call to service. >> the public will get a chance to visit kennedy's grave site today. and we have more on that. >> reporter: good morning, keith. looking over my shoulder here, you see the iconic view. and below the mansion is the grave site of senator ted kennedy. a solemn ceremony here yaed. the motorcade made its way through the city. and the grave site at this point has a simple praus and marker, and 200 feet from john f. kennedy's grave site. that distance necessitated by

in southeast georgia where seven people were found dead inside a mobile home. and two other people were critically injured. police describe the crime scene as one of the most gruesome they have ever seen. officers replied the victims were executed pretty much. police have not said how the victims died yet. and media are reporting that some of the victims are children. and there is a double shooting last night. officers arrived to find two men shot, and one ended up dying. police are not saying much about the crime. if you know nigger asked to give them a call. we now know the name of the man accused of shooting a police

los angeles overnight nearly tripled in size. an estimated 10,000 homes under danger. >> a desperate fight to beat back the flames. million-dollar homes with breathtaking views have a fire closing in. doesn't get much closer than this on the frontlines. it remains the largest of four major blazes going across southern california. bone dry brush make the fight for containment a difficult one. new rounds of evacuations have been ordered and 18 homes are threatened. now that the fire is closing in, this man will leave if he has to. despite calm conditions friday night, the station fire continues to plow across the rugged terrain, and the overnight orange glow is a sign this fire is far from over.

the california couple accused of kidnapping a girl and holding her prison for 18 years, could they be in other crimes? police searched their home looking for evidence that could link them to other open cases in the area. that includes the murders of a number of prostitutes.they kidn was 11 years old. they kept her in her backyardwo ht da meanwhile, we learned this weekend a neighbor reported a backyard incampment at the home three years ago, and police dismissed it as a code violation. >> this is not an acceptable out come. organizationally we should have been more curious, and turned over a rock or two.

>> dugard has now been reunited with her family. autopsy results are back on d.j. am. his real name is adam goldstein was found dead friday night in his new york city apartment. police say they found drug paraphernalia nearby including a crack pipe and prescription pills. he openly talked about his past addiction to drugs, and he dated celebrities nicole richie and mandy moore. and south caroline citizens are not forcing mark sanford out of office just yet. not one lawmaker defended him. republicans however will wait to make any decisions on impeachment until the state ethics division completes the

investigation. they are trying to determine whether he used state and private aircraft when he used his visited his mistress in argentina. here are the business stories. >> cash for clunkers was a huge success, and it's over now. after that report, the big focus will be on jobs, on wednesday payroll from adp is expected to report that a quarter of a million non-government jobs were lost last month. thursday's weekly report on jobless claims will fall as well. and then labor department puts its official stamp on friday, and then job losses in august, government, private alike, expected to show a decline of a quarter of a million and the unemployment rate could hold

this is our time to win. that's the message bob mcdonnell has for voters. he is campaigning hard in our area yesterday. he made several stops including this one at a home in mcclain, and also had lunch with vietnamese voters in falls church. he leads in the polls. a recent washington post poll put the lead in double digits. deeds is going to be in our area today going door to door. >> liftoff of "discovery," celebrating its 25th birthday by racking up science and supplies to the space station. >> she made it up. today the astronauts are steering closer to the international space station for link up. nationala officials say no fuel tank debris was observed hngitti ri nglif.offtit early indications arehe t survey

temperatures on their way up climbing into the mid-70s in town. a bit of early morning sunshine, and it will be average for the end of how long. 75, the dew point wch was in the 70s today is dropping in the 50s now. cooler and dry air. it will be a nice break from the humidity coming our way. some cool mornings on the way. by tuesday and wednesday morning, most of the suburbs, at least on the southern side of the metro area will be back down in the low 50s, and spots out here west of the blue ridge, mountains of west virginia, the timeframe, that could be in the 40s. the chesapeake bay, the water is better than 80 degrees. meanwhile, heres a check of radar. the last of the showers leaving the great state of delaware

headed up over new jersey. one patch here in central virginia may have a sprinkle or two for you folks. the lower parts of the eastern shore, you could see a little bit of light rain today. basically everywhere north and west of interstate 95, rain chances are less than 5%. not that we ever post anything under 30. and 77 in raleigh. look how much cooler it is back to the north and west. chicago waking up to 55 degrees. yes, there are freeze warnings out tonight for the north woods of minnesota. international falls, all of those places up there, the usual cold spots will be well down into the 30s tonight. that cooler, drier air, is coming our way. the leading edge of it is a weather ont that is sliding down through the metropolitan area. the further south you go today, the more clouds you will have and a little more humidity. washington, here, things are

looking good. skies are becoming more and more sunshine filled as we go through the rest of the day. a area of low pressure riding along the front will get down to the tide water,ut m n bucoth more than that. a little light rain around here probably late tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening. by and large most of your sunday will be dry. a nice hint of autumn coming our way. temperatures back down into the 50s, even in the 50s in downtown washington by tuesday moinrn and 55 degrees on june 1st was the last time washington dropped below 60 degrees. three full months. the early lean on labor day weekend is it will start warm and dry. >> summer is almost over. we did not have much of a summer. >> our longest stretch of 90-degree days was three in a row. >> that's nothing. >> we love it. the nationals cannot slow down the red birds, and it's pre-season. but the ravens are flying high.

good morning, everybody. your sports minute begins with the nationals. last night on the road in st. louis, the cardinals were back at it again. a three-run homer to right capping a four-run fifth inning. and then completing 23 of his 28 passes here for 247 yards and one touchdown, the ravens win 17-14 and are 3-0 in the pre-season. and then moreno has the lead at 9 under par going into today's final round. he is hoping to capture his first pga tour victory. in soccer, d.c. united. the second goal of the season. they win it, 1-nil.

the greatest expectations were placed on ted kennedy's shoulders because of who he was, but he surpassed them all because of who he became. the arlington national cemetery reopened today, a final resting place for another politician. he has been laid to rest beside his brothers. a disturbing crime scene in a small town. no indications of how they died or who killed them.

including this one at a home in mcclain. he had lunch with vet n. and there were two winners on friday's night jackpot. the largest pot for mega millions in two ars. the winning tickets now worth an $166 million each were purchased in san gabriel in california and a convenience store in the bronx. the megaball was 31. one person in maryland matched five numbers without the ball, and that was worth $250,000. back to school at george washington university. more than 7,000 students moved in yesterday.

the ladies in red hats. once again, as in years past, they came up with a way to help our wednesday's kids. >> we were looking for aproject, and i remember seeing wednesday's child on television. >> reporter: for the last few years, they raised money for the holidays for the gifts for wednesday's child. this year they did something new. >> thank you. >> reporter: this year they presented the children with backpacks for heading back to school. >> are you heading back to school? >> yes. >> what grade? >> eighth grade. >> fantastic. >> reporter: calling the project, red hats for back packs. they are buying backpacks and filling them with things they need for school. >> reporter: are you excited? >> yeah.

we are here on a good weather day. >> i think a lot of folks complained about the humidity yesterday. a lot. because a lot of people outside and a lot of people outside and the processional.

so i am doing something about it. we are going to have lower humidity today. that's the rule from the weather office. a pleasant day. temperatures will be every bit as warm as yesterday, but take 10 or 15 degrees out of the dew point, that will make all the difference in the world. this sunday morning it's a beautiful day out there. as advertised the skies are getting blue wur and bluer all the time. and temperatures are moving up fast. we are at 75 degrees here in washington. the dew point dropped out of the s.s and into the upper 50 i did a little digging. last kept we had six 90-degree days in the month of september, and that made it 3.5 degrees warmer than average. and this september i can tell you one thing, it's going to get off to a cooler than average

start. a big dome of canadian high pressure is moving in. it will take the humidity out and most of the warm air out for tomorrow. and i think this will be close to the high temperature tomorrow. 79 in frederick, maryland. 71 degrees in west virginia. and the last of the showers moving up the jersey shore. and a couple sprinkles down towards richmond and petersburg. you folks from fredericksburg, you may get a grazing of a sprinkle or two. no threat for rainfall out there for the rest of the sunday. 60s and 70s out ahead of the weather front. behind it, 50s and low 60s for low temperatures with dew points now in the upper 40s and low 50s. that real dry air is going to be moving into our area during the day today. as a result, it will be a pleasant day without the

humidity around. right along the front, we could kick off an isolated shower. high pressure building in. a ripple of low pressure across alabama and mississippi. that will come along the weather front here. the front will not get much further south than virginia beach. as the wave of low pressure rides along the front tomorrow, it will bring maybe the chance of a passing shower late in the day. most of monday will be dry. tuesday and wednesday, wonderful preview of autumn weather around here. high temperatures, 5 to 10 degrees cooler than average. and it looks like labor day weekend is so far looking like it will start dry. >> sounds good. thank you. outside a party for the king pop. how michael d
