as they head back to class for the semester students at a local university are warned of a spike in violent crime. good sunday to you. i'm craig melvin. a string of armed robberies in the area of george washington university has heightened concerns about safety.ethn nt in the the most recent i e thenmost recent pp haened this weekend on l street just blocks from g.w. darcy spencer joins us live tonight from that area with more. >> reporter: good evening, craig. as you can see behind me students are just wrapping up

watching a movie. they are being told to be careful, that there are some robberies in the area. it's back to class for george washington university students on monday. some are already getting a lesson in personal safety. there have been nearly a dozen robberies near the campus in recent months. >> i think it's terrible. i think it really shows a lack of security in the neighborhood. i think that students are much more of a target than anybody else, because they probably walk around the streets more at night than most people who live around here. >> reporter: the latest robbery happened here at 21st and l street northwest early saturday morning. a woman's purse snatched from her shoulder just blocks from campus. >> i talked to the chief about it. people in the second district who are in charge of foggy bottom. and they've assured me that they will step up patrols and may have more undercover officers in the neighborhood. particularly with school starting now. >> reporter: police say the robberies have been happening since may. some of them have involved large groups of people attacking their

victim on the street. some of the victims have been g.w. students. >> it's something i think about as something in the movies but not necessarily real life, even though it is if that makes sense. and so -- i mean i guess it's sort of eye opening. >> reporter: as classes get under way, students are being warned to be aware of their surroundings. are you concerned at all? >> no. we always walk together in groups. i don't think i really get scared about anything. >> there was a lot around last year. people getting phones stolen when they were walking. starbucks, their laptops stolen. they went up to get something, they left their laptops and someone ran off with it. >> reporter: students are being warned as always they should travel in pairs or groups especially at night. reporting live from foggy bottom darcy spencer, news 4. >> thank you. appreciate it. prince georges county schools are working around the clock this weekends trying to

aside rhetoric and pass a plan that cuts costs and extends coverage. meanwhile, republican senator orrin hatch says kennedy's absence will hurt the chances of passing a health care plan because the late senator was very instrumental in getting democrats to compromise. police in montgomery county are looking for the hit and run driver who hit and dragged two women. it happened yesterday on capitol view avenue in silver spring. witnesses tell police the striking vehicle was a black toyota suv or perhaps a pickup truck. the imcted knock the vehicle's fr on tno grill off. both women were in the crosswalk when it happened. they were hit with such a force that one of the women was dragged 80 feet the other 110 feet. then one g osehoom t wen was subsequently run over. w th om weer the women wernd a .29nd 29. susioerly er w s usiohuly hurt. to d to cover. police are askog inre onr.ve any police are asking anyone with information about that accident to give them a call.

the man charged with killing a security guard at the holocaust museum is scheduled to appear in court for the first time this week. 89-year-old james vonn brunt has been indicted on seven charges including the first degree murder of steven johns. vonn brunt was shot in the face during that june shooting himself. he has been in the hospital ever since. james vonn brunt is a self-described white supremacist. thousands more californians -- we'll get back to that story we were telling you about a few moments ago. thousands of californians driven from their homes as wildfires continue to burn out of control there. jay gray has that story right now from los angeles. >> reporter: night fall may help to hide the smoke. it only serves to highlight the intensity of the flames. >> this fire's still totally out of control. >> reporter: the station fire has been burning for more than five days in the foothills of los angeles and continues to grow. strike teams are working night and day. battling the blaze from the air.
