an emergency now declared in four california fires as the massive and deadly wildfires continue raging in the south. good afternoon, i'm joe krebs. >> i'm kimberly suitors in for jim handly. ferocious flames that have destroyed dozens of flames. >> now 80,000 acres have scorched across southern california. jay gray has the latest now from lake view terrace. >> reporter: the attack continues from the air and on the ground. >> it's like war zone radio and but after six days the army of firefighters working around the clock is still losing the war against mother nature. >> there's really no opportunities to go in there and draw a line to stop this fire so we're trying to contain it best we can but we're really -- this fire is burning whenever it wants to go. >> reporter: some of the most graphic evidence that the fire

is in full control is here in tujunga canyon. just yesterday w a community. >> this is usually very green and so it looks like a desert. very sad. this would happen. >> reporter: it's happening across a huge section of california right now. governor arnold schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency. >> there are fires everywhere. we have eight large fires around the state of california right now. >> reporte the biggest is the massive station fire. it scorched more than 85,000 acres and destroyed dozens of homes and businesses. with at least 12,000 homes still in jeopardy more than 2,000 firefighters are struggling to protect what they can. battling, not only the flames, but now their emotions as well. >> prayers for that family of our two brothers that we lost. >> reporter: two firefighters were killed when their vehicle roll down a mountainside in the middle of the intense flames. >> every californian is grateful

for their bravery and for their great service and of course they're my heroes. >> reporter: heroes lost in a blaze that continues to burn out of control. >> and there are concerns now the conditions here could get even worse. forecasters say the santa ana winds still to this point could begin to fan the flames as early as this evening. in los angeles, jay gray, "news4." >> and california's not alone. crews are also battling wildfires in arizona, oregon, colorado, utah, and washington state this afternoon. we are hearing for the first time a family member's call for help after he found his relatives dead inside a mobile home park in southeastern geora. officers found the bodies of seven people inside the mobile home in brunswick on saturday. two other victims were found clinging to life and one of them died yesterday. this morning, police released 911 call placed from relative guy heinz. >> how many people are there? >> there are six. my whole family's dead.

>> okay. >> it looks like they have been beaten to death. i don't know, man. >> the rest of the caller, guy heinz at the scene odrug and other charges but investigators do not believe he is the suspect in the murders. authorities say they're not sure whether the killer is still in the area and they're offering a $25,000 reward for any information. a citizenship scan may be the reason for the murder of a pizza shop owner in the district. was killed inside of his business on fourth street in northeast washington, back on august 1th. last friday police arrested a woman named shanika robinson for his murder. court documents show rana was paying robinson $500 a week to marry his pakistani brother so that the brother could become a citizen. police say rana was killed because he stopped making those payments. pat collins will have more on this coming up at "news4 at 5:00." well, it is back to the books for one of our area's

largest school system. a record 142,000 students went back to school today in montgomery county. the school system remains one of the nation's best despite recent budget cuts and it also has a growing minority population. school superintendent jerry weis says its success is based on equality. >> if you have high expectations, you actually lead for equity. i don't let race or socio-economics become an excuse. >> weis says his new aim to get every student in the county college-ready. a college graduation rate twice the national average. he says it is important to start as early as pre-k to accomplish that new goal. a man seriously burns in a morning house fire. >> and working close around the clock to fix a scheduling mix-up. four other stories making headlines in our area today. a man was seriously burned in a town house fire this

morning in frederick county. in the victoria square development off of schaefer drive. three men were renting the unit but only two were home. fire official his to medevac one the victims to johns hopkins in baltimore. the landlord says the house had two working house smoke detectors. it happened just before 7:00 a.m. on east randolph road between old columbia pike and fairland road. no students were on the bus at the time and no one was seriously injured but authorities did have to close part of randolph while they cleared the debris. it appears everything is back on track for prince george's county. regular schedules. when started last week more than 8,000 high schoolers had incorrect or partial schedules. officials say it was caused by a computer malfunction. some students in montgomery county are getting help starting off the year by going green.

providing neighboring elementary schoolers with 400 recycled backpacks. distributed here at highland elementary school. made from recycled banners making each backpack one of a kind and they're filled with reao get the year started in an eco-friendly way. resdecents in a northeast neighborhood had a really rough morning arch a water main broke sending water gushing into the street. about 12 homes in the 600 block of kennedy street northeast had to make due without water for hours after the main broke. two houj sinkholes formed in the middle of the street too, sending a stream of sand and gravel flowing down theroad. residents had to act fast to save one .neighb's car. they've not determined what caused the pipe to break. well, as all the kids left for school today it certainly felt like the beginning of the school year. a real taste of autumn out there. chuck bell has our fast forecast

now from storm center4. chuck. >> good ternoon, joe. and good afternoon, everybody. yes, indeed, a nice little early fall preview outside. first thing this morning and the clouds are sort of hanging around here the washington area. a lot more sunshine the further north and west that you go. ig doppler. not an awful lot in the way of rainfall right now at least not to west washington. a couple sprinkles in the lower eastern shore into the extreme southeasrn virginia as well. on the bigger picture you can see the stream of rain showers tracking out of southeastern virginia over the lower parts of the eastern shore of maryland. and over the dover, delaware area as well. temperatures, ah, nice and cool for the final day of august. 74 here in washington right now. that's nearly 12 degrees, cooler than average for this time of the year and the air is nice and dry as well. these are dew point temperatures in the upper 40s and low 50s around town. a lot more humidity just to the south of us.

well, the first space walk for the shuttle "discovery" astronauts will dock tomorrow. docked late last night. the astronauts cheered when the hatches swung open and the two crews greeted each other with hugs and handshakes. "discovery" and its crew were dropping off thousands of pounds of equipment. the crew's also dropping off astronaut nicole stott. she will remain at the space station until another shuttle comes to get her in november.

now to the health care debate, at the least five versions of health care reform are circulating on capitol hill but interestingly, none is president's bill. today, observers, including former republican senator bob dole, offered some advice. steve handelsman has more. >> reporter: president obama is still in washington. as the debate raises on. this is at the ceo headquarters at the white house today. former senate majority leader republican bob dole says barack obama's got to do more. >> he ought to pick up the mantle of leadership and go with it imean he is the president. >> reporter: in an op-ed in today's "washington post" said doll, obama ought to come without a plan now. >> many think he's trying to

thought. the coast guard searches for them and then calls off the search. >> and seemingly out of thin air a coupl of guys out sport fishing spot something in the distance and prayers are answered. janet has more. >> reporter: a reunion most thought would never come to pass. >> reporter: it was supposed to be just an overnight fishing trip until tressel hawkins woke up to a nightmare. >> reporter: >> -- >> i'm running around frantically trying to get everybody up. get the water out as fast as we can and within a minute, five seconds, the boat just tumbled over. it capsized right there. >> reporter: made essentially a life-saving decision. >> two bag of chip, six pack of crackers and three gallons of water and that's what we lived on for the eight days. >> more than a week atop a capsize fishing boat they knew the coast guard was look for them because at one point they saw the helicopter.

>> that tuesday morning, we saw two of the coast guard helicopters fly ball and hey didn't see us. i have no idea how they didn't see us. >> the search extended some 86,000 square miles. the size of minnesota. after a week, the coast guard called it off. >> get to a point where a decision has to be made. agonizing choice. but we conformed the families that we're suspending the search and it's a difficult thing do but you get to a point where you have to look at all of the factors. >> reporter: but no one factored on a -- affordable pleasure which spotted the men, picked them up and then made them the most memorable measle their lives. >> i'm going to get the picture of the most hungry guys in the world. >> might not have never made it. i mean it was the right place at the right time. >> the coast guard then brought them home. how did the men survive? hawkins says it was truly on a wing and on a prayer. >> it was on a day-to-day basis

that everyone actually had their breakdown. and like i said the power of prayer had us feeling safe so far as knowing that we're going to make it out of it but didn't know how long that we were going to have to endure this. >> reporter: they were committed, he says, long enough. >> that sounds like it qualifies as a miracle. that was janet shamly reporting and the captain of the boat who spotted the men in the water who said he did not know they were reported missing. he talked about the incident this morning on the "today" show. >> actually we got close to the boat and we had coast guard online trying to talk to them see, what it was, and as we backed up to the boat, we hollered, what's their name. and gave us their name, coast guard said well they've been missing for eight days and i said, hey, we're going to come get you all. come on. and when i started motioning at we were backing up to them, man, they jumped in the water. there was no stopping them. they jumped in the water and swimming in the boat. >> i bet they were. none of the men had suffered any serious injuries despite all they had endured. amazing story.

now to another amazing story, joe. today, police in california continued searching the home of a man accused of kidnapping a little girl and hiding her i his backyard for 18 years. authorities in the san francisco area were searching for evidence to see whether phillip garrido is linked to any other crimes including murders. he's charged with keeping jaycee lee dugard, now 29 years old, as a sex slave. and fathering two children with her. garrido has pleaded not guilty to abduction, rape, and imprisonment charges. and we're learning now details about the death of a popular deejay. the man known to many as dj am was found dead in his manhattan apartment on friday. according to a report in "people" magazine, police found adam goldstein dead in his bed with a crack pipe, a bag of crack cocaine and prescription pills nearby. dj am had battled drug addiction in the past but claimed he'd been off drugs more than 11

years. people also reports that he sent two text messages around 1:00 friday morning, both were about an appearance he was supposed to make at a las vegas club on friday night. officials in libya say the lockerbie bomber's in the hospital now. bomber abdelbaset al megrahi. released him on compassionate grounds. he reportedly has term nat prostate cancer. the libertarian skaecretary of state said that hs in his final days. invited to megrahi's hospital room but said he is too stoic answer any questions. megrahi is the only person convicted in the deadly bombing of the flight pan am. plus, how a little yoga could help you improve your diet.he lllllllll)l),%

habits and your weight. a study found yoga participants were more likely to be mindful eaters, people who are aware of when they are full or hungry, and don't eat to soothe boredom or depression. the researchers questioned 300 people at a seattle fitness facility. they also found regular yoga helped people gain less weight over a ten-year period. well, feeling insecure about your job may be a stronger indicator of poor health than smoking or high blood pressure. according to a study in the journal science, social science and medicine, persistent job insecurity led to poor self-rated help and depressive symptoms. researchers looked at surveys of nearly 2,000 adults collected over a ten-year period. at any given time 18% of participants felt insecure about their jobs which experts say increases their stress level. >> have to agreeith that. >> coming up michael jackson's father speaks out for the first time since the king of pop's
