new details about a hijacked plane in new mexico. a religious fanatic took over. he made a juice box into a fake bomb and demanded to speak to mexican president, felipe calderon. the police stormed the yet and surrounded the guy. nobody was hurt. in fact, many passengers didn't

realize the plane had been hijacked until after they landed. they found no explosives on board. since the hijackings of 9/11, protecting the sky has been more critical. it falls to the members of the 113 fighter wing at andrews air force base. tonight, we have the story. the first local journalist to go up since 9/11. >> reporter: it's a friday afternoon at andrews air force base. it could be any day or night of the week. it's the 113th, also known as the capital guardians responsible for 24/7 protection of the air space over the nation's capital. >> we respond very often. this is some of the busiest air

space here in the nation's capital region. thefore, we are out there checking things out very often. >> reporter: they have been part of the d.c. national guard for 70 years. it's role shifted after 9/11. they haveeen on air sovereignty alert. f-16 fighter jets stay armed and loaded ready to respond at a moments notice. >> we weren't on air sovereignty alert prior to 9/11. since the attacks, the nation has seen fit to make sure we have aircraft on hand. >> reporter: get a firsthand look at the daily duties. i was gechb permission to fly on a training unit. he was quick to point out how quick he would have to respond on a real mission. >> we have to get there when

we're told to get there. consequences of not getting there are obvious. >> reporter: after checking in, it was time to take to the skies. we rose from the runway at just over 300 knots and drifted into the gray skies above andrews. once we leveled off, we headed over the chesapeake near the river naval air station. i was took through basic combat maneuvers. the flight of a lifetime for this journalist. being a fighter pilot is no joyride. it's tough, gruelling work that requires constant attention to details. they are magnified when they respond to a potential threat. after three hours, we made it backo andrews. i returned with a better perspective of the job it takes
