"it wa pblrobay a successful attempt to divert attention from the content of president obama's speech." a metro worker is clinging to life tonight after being struck by a metro train. metro is dealing with another serious incident today. pat collins is live now in alexandria with more. pat, what happened? >> reporter: pat, yet another sad day for metro. this time in alexandria. this time a metro worker medevaced after an incident in the tunnel between the reagan national airport station and the braddock road station. firefighters had to use a special escape hatch to effect a rescue. train service between the two stations was suspended for some time. the metro worker has been described as a 44-year-old man.

they say he was struck by a six-car outbound train. they say he's a communications technici technician who worked for metro about 12 years. they describe his condition tonight as serious. coming up at 5:00, we are going to talk to a passenger who was on that train in that tunnel at the time of the accident. i'll see you at 5:00. pat, back to you. >> pat collins, thanks, pat. starting next week, you may notice changes when you fly out of dulles. airport officials unveiled a new screen security area. the new location is in the main terminal of the aerpt and will replace the current tsa points on the ticketing level. the new area is bigger and less confusing. it will also include aro termin for the airport's soon to be revealed shuttle train. the new screening area will open to the traveling public on tuesday. passengers riding on metro

or marc trains will notice more police officers on patrol. this was the scene earlier at the shady grove metro in gaithersburg. officers are taking part in training exercise to test their response in case an emergency occurs. the drill will continue tomorrow on the eighth anniversary of the september 11th attacks. police say the training exercise wa scheduled and is not in response to any new intelligence suggesting an attack is being planned. still no word on whatusy se. thnficoe , tyrolaryre. b the fire broke out lt night i the 2100 block of marshall hall road in the brians road section of the county. when firefighters arrived, the home was engulfed in flames. they found the body of a 62-year-old man inside. he has not yet been identified. investigators say there were no smoke alarms in the house. one fire fighter suffered minor injuries while battling the flames. alcohol may have been a thctor in a crash in leesburg. it killed one person and led to a man's arrest.

-year-old justin schuback of ol ashburn was arrested and charged with felony hit-and-run and dui. police say schuback was the driver of a car that slammed into a dump truck in the westbound lanes of route 7 just before 2:00 this morning. the car left the road. police say schuback then abandoned the vehicle and ran off. he was arrested about a half mile away while trying to hitch hike. apparently an attempt to get away. the passenger in the car 26-year-old adam katz of ashburn died at the scene. >> from what i saw, he did have his seat belt on. the car was mangled. the hood, fender, windshield was shattered. it was a very strong impact. >> the driver of the dump truck was not hurt. making progress in the fight against illegal drug use. and a campaign to clean up the mall. here is a look at four other stories making headlines in our

area today. >> a falls church man is in hot water after u.s. capitol police found a shotgun in his truck along with ammo. 28-year-old joshua bowman tried to get through the police barricade between 1st and c street southeast about the time president obama arrived on capitol hill to give his speech. officers searched bowman's vehicle. he told them he had a shotgun inside of it. he is charged with having an unregistered firearm and unregistered ammunition. >> more than 20 white bicycles have been placed around the dupont circle area in memory of a young cyclist who was killed. 22-year-old alico swanson was hit by a truck and died. they installed an all-white bike in that spot to mark her memory. less than two weeks ago the city removed that bicycle, reportedly because the bike had become an eye sore. so today 22 white bicycles were placed around the intersection of connect avenue, r street and

20th street each bike marking one year of swanson's life. a new drug abuse survey has troublesome news about the nation's youth. there has been a significant increase in lsd and ecstacy use for young people. marijuana continues to be the most common illicit drug and most people don't view it as a health risk. on a positive note though, the survey show as significant decrease in nonprescription drug abuse and meth users. a local group is stepping up to clean up the national mall. duty calls. pet and animal waste removal service dedicated a team of pooper-scoopers to the mall earlier today, after a number of newspaper articles said the nation's landmarks have become shameful, embarrassing and graceful. duty calls says volunteers are at no cost to tax payers. more clouds rolled in and changes blowing our way.

joe wilson apologized for his behavior last night during the president's speech on health care. in an outburst, wilson accused president obama of lying about part of his reform proposal. wilson called the white house staffers to apologize to the president. he said they agree the debate on health care needs to be a civil one. there's been a lot of focus on the h1n1 virus. today, health officials express concern too many people may overlook the dang urs of traditional seasonal flu which can be deadly. >> and say many should get two flu shots this season. jay gray has more. >> reporter: it's an annual fall ritual. this year doctors are warning. one flu shot may not be enough. >> this year there are two flu-related threats. seasonal flu and the h1n1 virus. >> reporter: the h1n1 or swine flu vaccine won't be available until october. initially only for high-risk groups like pregnant women, chilen and young adults, health care workers and younger

patients with pre-existing health problems. >> we know 2009 h1n1 virus continues to circulate. >> and grow, just like the fear over swine flu. on the eve of the september 11th anniversary, a consumer reports survey shows more americans are concerned about a swine flu outbreak than another terrorist attack. while h1n1 is the most dominant strain of flu worldwide, doctors are warning it could be dangerous, even deadly, to ignore traditional seasonal flu. >> seasonal influenza causes an average of 36,000 to 40,000 deaths every year in the united states. >> reporter: according to the centers for disease control, more than 110 million doses of winter flu vaccine will be available this year, b traditionally, less than 100 million people get the shot. those most at risk include adults 50 and older, anyone with chronic health problems, caregivers and children.

school settings, including colleges, are ripe for disease spread. >> reporter: this school in georgia closed for the week because 1/3 of the students there have flu-like symptoms. and it's just the start of what many experts fear will be a long and very difficult flu season. jay gray, nbc news. a man who hijacked a mexican airliner is undergoing a mental evaluation today. police say the hijacker jose flores is a pastor from bolivia. he reportedly told authorities the date 9/9/09 caused him to hijack the plane yesterday. he says 9/9/09 was significant because it's the numbers 666 upside down. flores claimed he had a bomb onboard but the device was fake. the whole incident was preventible because the device should have been the spotted when flores went through security screenings. the congressional banking committee demanded answers how bernie madoff was able to swindle billions of dollars from

nasdaq closed 23 points higher. the new york stock exchange added 78 points. here's some of the stories making news on the web today. >> a dog from down under needed help after he got himself wedged inside a cave. his owners say scooby was missing inside the cave for five days. despite their efforts, they could not find a safe way out. rescue workers had to call in a mine rescue team who used come pressed air bags to move a rock out of the way. scooby's owners say somehow he managed to stay calm through the ordeal. nine women were rescued from a turkish villa after being tricked to believing they were reality show contestants. they had to sign contracts saying they could have no contract from the outside world and be fined $33,000 if they left the house early. a foreign news agency reports the women were duped and naked images of them were sold on the internet. they thought they were filming for a "big brother" style

interrupted. i'm wendy rieger. that interruption was the report of yet another serious accident involving the metro system. a worker was struck by a train this morning in a tunnel along the blue and yellow lines in alexandria. pat collins joins us live. pat? >> reporter: wendy, a metro worker, struck by a six-car metro train in a tunnel in alexandria. this metro worker transported by helicopter to a trauma center after an incident in this metro tunnel between the national airport and braddock road stations. rescue workers had to use an emergency escape hatch to enter the tunnel and removthat worker. keith williams was in the tunnel on that train. >> everything was normal until the train
