the borden bell was tolled in washington's national cathedral at noon, one for each year since the attacks. there was also a noon prayer service in memory of the thousands of lives lost and those affected. as part of the national day of service, a number of students and medical reserve corps members were at the middle school today. eight years ago a teacher sarah clark and a student from the northeast washington area were killed in the attacks. they were on american airlines flight 77 on their way to california when their flight was hijacked and crashed into the pentagon. at rfk stadium today, 200 volunteers spent this national y of observance and remembrance making quilts for the children deaf ployed troops. they sewed the images of the members into the quilt patterns.

d.c. cares mobilize volunteers for this project. the wife of admiral mullen presented the quilt to the wife and 2-year-old son of a sergeant who is serving at afghanistan. coast guard training exercise caused a real life stir along the potomac river this morning in washington. officials say a few news outlets misunderstood coast guard radio transmissions and reports shots had been fired at a suspicious boat. the president, the pentagon and the anniversary of 9/11. brian moar has that story. >> reporter: coast guard gun boats confronting a suspicious vessel a short distance from the pentagon and the president? and on the anniversary of 9/11? it sure sounded like a big story. >> no shots were fired. there was no suspect vessel. >> reporter: the coast guard says it was just a routine drill, but quickly escalated into a extraordinary misunderstanding on tv.

just fine. okay with some sunshine the other part kind of so-so. today a real tropical rain storm out there for some of us. areas that i thought along east i-95 got hit good with some puddles around an insurance in area. 0.8 inch of rain. some of the spots that did pick up over 1.5id inches, baltimore pax river, over an inch. dover delaware over three inches. atlantic city had four inches of rain. that low is north of us. look at the precip how it's sinking south. still rotating around and coming through areas mainly north of d.c. there's sti quite a bit of dampness in the cloud cover that will stick around for a while. temperatures are quite cool today. mid 60s and still holding. our cements here for the next couple of hours are going to be slowly falli into the low 60s by about midnight. light showers out there.

missing its left front hub cab. police are asking anyone with information to give them a call. firefighters are still trying to figure out what triggered an explosion at a warehouse in capitol heights. the explosion went off last night at the haske water works building on hamilton overlook. a window and two doors were blown out. several containers of nigtric acid was on the ground. the metro worker struck by a train yesterday remains in serious condition this afternoon. he was hit by a train in a tunnel along the yellow and blue lines in alexandria yesterday morning. rescue workers had to use an emergency escape hatch to get into the tunnel and free the worker. he was flown to the hospital. metro is investigating to determine what led to the accident. when news4 continues, incredible pictures as a man pumping gas is forced to run for

jersey and delaware with a lot of wind and rain. 19-foot waves off the coast of new jersey. they had four, five, six inches of rain around new jersey, too, as well as 60 mile-an-hour winds. high winds. could have been a subtropical storm. right w it's just inland moving north. we'll have the rest of this system rotating through our area tomorrow. that's hanging back off to the west. in terms of rainfall totals, philadelphia close to two. over two inches in salisbury, maryland. again, still wind along the coast. there have been airport delays today around new york and boston. let's go ahead and zoom in then. i'll show where you most of that rain rotating through state college central pennsylvania, altoona. we are on the tail end, the southern most end of this storm as it pulls away. still we are going to see showers rotating through. mainly to the north of our area, northern montgomery, loudoun county right now. sinking south a little bit. it's pushing a little to the west.

of shots being fired on the potomac today not far from the pentagon. the president had been there for the remembrance ceremony of the 9/11 attacks. the reports were based on radio communications that were part of the exercise. president obama attended a wreath-laying ceremony at the pentagon where 184 people were killed in the attack there. several family members of the victims also attended. it was one of the many rituals and dedications held across the country to remember this solemn day. we'll have live team coverage at the top of the hour. secretary of health and human services kathleenebelius at t.c. williams high school today promoting the flu vaccine. she says it is especially important for pregnant women, health care workers and those with underlying health issues to get the shot. more than 200,000 people are hospitalized each year because of the flu. on to the search for a popular medical student at yale university. she disappeared just days before her wedding, a wedding that was planned for this coming weekend.

cities have their perils, but with street smarts one can avoid becoming yet another statistic. this morning at 4'11" and only 90 pounds, the hope is she won't become one herself. >> jeff rossen reporting. we are told the woman's family is in new haven with her fiance. a man in police custody today in connection with the killing an abortion protestor in michigan. the shooting happened outside a high school 30 miles from lansing. no students were injured. all schools if the area were under lack doup for several hours. michigan state police say the suspect is linked to another deadly shooting. this morning the second shooting took place at a business and neighboring community. prosecutors believe the shooter singled out the victim because of his anti-abortion protests near the school. it looked like a scene from a movie. an out of control car slams into a gas pump and triggers a fire ball while someone on the other side is gassing up.
