was cleared up. the potomac panic prompted criticism that the federal government is still scaring people rather than informing them. >> it's possible the coast guard could have been more prudent on september 11th. the real lesson here is the american people are safe, but they haven't been told about it. when someone heard this radio signal, called it out to the media, that then took off. >> reporter: the white house criticized cnn for first reporting the incident without confirming. cnn said it heard the radio and saw the boats. tom sherwood, thank you. >> today's training exercise caused a stir at reagan national airport. aviation officials grounded departing flights 20 minutes out of caution. 17 flights were delayed. all traffic since returned to normal operations. meanme, rain and overcast clouds hung over this solemn day in new york city a memorial service was held near ground zero.

bagpipes played, bells tolled, there was silence. at the moments the two hijacked planes hit the twin towers of the world trade center. the victims' family members read allowrea readout loud the names of loved ones. mayor bloomberg told the families beyond the pain there is sweetness in the memories of those lost. the crowd was shorter as the years past and dwindled as the service went on. the last of the mourners faded away as three trumpeters played the final note of taps. as in years past, a tribute in light will take place tonight. beams of light shining into the night sky, symbolizing the place where the twin towers once stood.

>> todd m. beimer. >> in shankville, pennsylvania, families and friends read the names of 40 passengers and crew members who died aboard flight 93. a bell rang for each victim. the ceremony began at 10:03 this morning. the exact time the plane crashed into the field. the passengers on flight 93 credited with overpowering their hijackers, possibly preventing the plane from reaching washington. the location will soon become a permanent national memorial. here at home, president obama joined the families of the 184 people killed at the pentagon for their day of remembrance. julie carey is live at the pentagon this evening with more. >> reporter: today's remembrance at the pentagon was the most low-key to date. coming together to honor their loved ones on this eighth anniversary was no less important to the victims' families. for the first time beings pouring rain intruded on this solemn anniversary slashing off

the area mainly north. more showers we could have for saturday. a lot of spots, too, north of the area. what about sunshine for the weekend? we'll talk about it in a few minutes. back to you. >> thank you, veronica. there are new developments in the case of a murdered pizza shop owner in northern d.c. investigators are looking into allegations a member of the d.c. police department may have assisted the suspect after the murder. pat collins joins us live in northeast washington with more. >> reporter: yes, tonight an apparent suicide by metropolitan police department detective after he's questioned about an alleged association with the pizza mark murder suspect. police say last night at his mother's home in forestville, they found the body of d.c. police directive terrance green. they say it's an apparent suicide. detective green was assigned to the fifth police district in

northeast washington. sources tell news4 that a short time before his death, investigators questioned detective green about his alleged association with pizza mart murder suspect shaniqa robinson. charged with the murder of the owner of that pizza mart. investigators are looking into allegations a member of the d.c. police department may have provided assistance to suspect robinson after that murder. sources say at this point no charges have been filed against detective green. it was august 18th that the man was found dead inside the pizza mart store. he had been beaten, stabbed and set on fire. according to court documents, he

paid suspect robinson $500 a week to mary his pakistani brother so the brother could become a u.s. citizen. when the brother discovered robinson had sexual affairs with other men, ramma cut off the payments. the investigation continues on. back to you. >> pat collins in northeast, thank you. there are new developments that involve the stafford county youth minister accused of having sex with a teenager tt scohe counseled. 36-year-old jennifer brenn turned herself intohe magistrate's office last night and releasle on a $500,0, bond. brennan is a married mother of two young children and counselor at st. mathias methodist church in stafford. a grand jury indicted her tuesday for having sexual relations with a 15-year-old boy during their counseling sessions. a metro worker who was hit by a train yesterday remains in critical condition tonight. this happened around 10:30 yesterday morning. in a metro tunnel between the

national airport and braddock road stations. rescue workers had to use an emergency escape hatch to get into the tunnel and get the worker out. metro officials are still looking into the cause of this. metro rail service was interrupted about an hour today so crews could affects a loose cable over the tracks. it seems it was hanging from a ceiling of the tunnel near the woodley park station in northeast washington. it was discovered during the morning rush hour. rail service was stopped while repairs were made. trains are operating normally again. news4 at 5:00 just getting started tonigh a small implant with new benefits. a new tool to fight the effects of parkinson's. >> buses collide with children on board.

par inson's disease can steal a person's life. a new jersey man knows that well. >> after a medical procedure, the results are outstanding. glenn zimmerman has your health reports. >> reporter: sitting in a waiting room, a man does a crossword puzzle. for william, it was like walking on water, because the simple act of walking itself inspired words and feelings usually reserved for a more spiritual setting. >> couldn't get out of a wheelchair on my own two feet. it's been a miracle. >> reporter: he has parkinson's disease. we met him in july. that's before doctors implanted a new device in his brain. now he has control of his body and i nearly tremor-free. there have been some new symptoms. >> i have occasional trouble swaling and it affects my sweech. >> reporter: he is visiting his

the 9/11 anniversary and the battle for health care reform is the president obama's week. >> eight years since 9/11, osama bin laden the face of the terrorist attacks. is the obama's administration approach same as the bush administration to catch bin laden? >> one thing he said is increasing more troops to afghanistan. they are debating right now and there is a report whether or not there should be more troops. the purpose more troops to afghanistan has more to root out

the taliban than wipe out bin laden. what obama campaigned on is put more pressure on pakistan and get them to crack down. most terrorism analysts believe osama bin laden is in back stand and not in afghanistan, but the region in between these two countries. that's easier said than done. getting pakistan to cooperate and to really take actions to take and topple osama bin laden is what they are trying to do. >> what is plan b then, considering how pakistan has not been cooperative? you've got those rugged mountains. we are having trouble in afghanistan even just getting to the taliban. >> right. and you are seeing the predator drones being launched. they had some success with that, although the bush administration, we saw launching those predator drones. it's easier said than done or we would have caught him earlier. >> even if they catch bin laden, it's not going to stop the

taliban. >> exactly. is he really as powerful or just the symbolism of terrorism that we created? >> it would be a symbolic victory. i think a lot of people who are still grieving today would feel very good if he was brought to justice. turning to health care this week. the presidt addressed a joint session of congress. we know he can give a great speech, but will he be able to deliver the votes needed to pass? >> that's the million dollar question. what he has to straddle is convincing the liberals in his caucus, people supporting that so-called public option with the blue dogs and conservatives who are part of the democratic caucus. that's not an easy situation. the good news from the speech was most democrats from the conservatives and liberals do seem to be fired up, wanting to get something done. they still have to hammer out the details. the other hearn whose arm you have to twist is olympia snowe, the sole republican who is the player in this.

coming up, football fever. the l season is under way, but we are visiting a younger gridiron gang. >> call to serve. small tributes to the 9/11 victims. >> hit-and-run, the driver kept on going. people recovering this evening after a serious bus crash in southeast d.c. that happened this morning. it was a charter bus carrying school children also involved in this crash it was the 2300 block of good hope road. >> reporter: he was on the back of this metro bus when it was hit by a charter bus around 7:30 this morning. it happened in southeast and good hope road. 19 people were hurt in the crash. six of them children heading to school. >> a lot of children got thrown sideways. >> all the injuries are minor at this time for check-ups. it's all precautionary. we want to make sure our

patients get the best treatment. if they are complaining to something, we'll get them to the right facility. >> reporter: official sources close to the investigation tell news4 the driver of the charter bus reported having problems braking about half block up from the accident scene. passengers on the bus tell us they felt a strong jolt. >> all of a sudden there w impact. a good hit. >> reporter: the charter bus had the most damage with a bent fender and sttered windshield. there were five people on board the charter bus. police tell us the passengers were elementary students being transported from garfield to cleveland schools. they were allicked up by their parents. only the driver went to the hospital. on the metro bus, 18 people were transported. >> all in all, a lot of whiplash, shook up. >> reporter: police are still investigating the official cause of who's at fault.

>> there are numerous people to interview. >> reporter: officials tell us there were several folks involved in this crash who decided no the to go to the hospital, saying their injuries were not that serious. tracee wilkins, news4. good hope road was closed shortly after that crash. it has reopened. police are searching for the driver responsible for a deadly hit-and-run prince george's county. jose simentahl of riverdale was attempting to cross annapolis road last night when he was hit. they are looking for a damaged chrysler with the front spoiler torn off and may be missing its left front hubcap. police are asking anyone with information to give them a call. today the washington region took time to remember and honor the victims of the 11 attacks eight years after the tragic moments in our nation's history. dozens of groups commemorated the day through abts of service.

a kay of honor and remembrance turned into a day of service. all across the washington region, citizens of all ages and walks of life commemorated the 9/11 attacks by giving. giving back in the memory of that day's victims. in northeast, students from eastern senior high school gathered to sh and rededicate a memorial at the birdie baucus middle school. 11-year-o 11-year-old asia cotton was aboard the flight. >> i felt so sad. >> today is rene's birthday. she turned 9 years old on the day of the attacks. the high school senior did not know either of the victims, but felt compelled to honor their memory.

the battle is on that looks like a doozy. the pizza purveyors are handing out their goodies. college students are firing up their appetite and downing pizza samples and the trophy is ready to adorn one lucky pizza store wall. this is the brian child of mandy carpency who wanted to come up for something fun for students at the beginning of the school year. >> we wanted to bring the college feel in. we are a big college. we thought why not let them have the fun experience they would get at our school away from home. >> all the pizzas today are cheese pizzas, produced by four local rockville pizza stores. pizza a is la pizzeria pizza, close to montgomery campus. pizza b is three brothers pizza with lots of locations including rockville. pizza c is potomac pizza with four montgomery county

>> are you feeling better? >> yes, i am. >> high school football is here in full swing. it's dunbar at eastern. for the kids of eastern, every game is big. they had to forfeit all of their games last season. they could have their hands full with dunbar. seems to be playing for the city championship every single year. hake hake hakeem dermish is the man. >> dunbar is a perennial powerhouse every season. it's no different this year. dunbar has one of the best linebackers in the country playing for them. his name is jare johnson. his grandmother raised him and his seven brothers and he spent most of the time hanging out on d.c. streets getting into trouble. one man stepped into his life and helped him change his life.

coach, i want to be good. i made a commitment to him that -- if you do what you are supposed to do, i'll support you and help you. he trusted me. that was one of the biggest things, he trusted me. from then on, the sky's the limit. >> now javare is reaching for that limit. he developed into one of the best linebackers in the country. with a 6'4" 210 pound frame he is a perfect combination of side size, speednd strength. he racked up 90 tackles and ten sacks, earning scholarships from 17 different schools. he chose the university of miami. his transformation is visible. >> every day i look at myself in the mirror and i wake up. i know dramatically i changed a lot. >> there is nothing like helping somebody who wants to be helped.
