over the country for those who died eight years ago on 9/11. here, panic when a training exercise caught almost everyone off guard. good evening. >> in an instant this morning, the fear and anxiety many of us felt eight years ago when cable tv networks reported shots were fired on the potomac river. it was all a big misunderstanding, a coast guard drill. many want answers about the timing and communication about such a drill on this date. we have more. >> reporter: during the training exercise occurred when washington has extra anxiety. the coast guard was doing a

training exercise where they fired on a boat in the potomac river. their internal communications would have sounded very real. it's just what cnn staffers were doing. they broadcast it was the eighth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. the president was at a ceremony. fortunately harbor patrol was not far away. >> we found out about it once it began. we had harbor boats out there. the aftermath was letting everybody else know it was an exercise. >> reporter: departures from national airports were delayed for 20 minutes. the faa said it's not typical for the faa to make decisions based on the media reports, but the situation needs to be ecked out. the coast guard defends its training. >> we look at our procedures and

smithsonian says he's hired ten new zoo officers in the last four months. >> i feel good about it. we have met our goal that we talked to you about earlier. >> are the officers street ready? >> yes, they all have street experience. >> reporter: concerns are raised. >> they are not street ready. >> reporter: three off camera and two with their identities hidden. one said she quit as a zoo police officer one day after the interview. >> for those who say you are a disgruntled employee. >> i have never seen anything like this in my life. i worked at the police department for 21 years. i was a d.c. police officer. >> reporter: she claims the issues are not only manpower, but management. a lack of commitment to training officers and new recruits.

>> they are being hired, given guns and badges and they don't have the federal training. >> ridiculous. it's absolutely untrue. at no time do we give anyone a gun and put them on the street. they are talking of two of the three new ones that came on board have gone through firearms training. they are riding with seasoned officers. >> reporter: how much training and how much time is the sticking point. a zoo police sergeant claims ops is refusing to train the police officers and insists on training for federal police officers and federal security guards saying an officer must attend a police academy or law enforcement program. they admit no major crime happened inside the zoo gates, it still happens outside.

death of another person. no charges have been filed against detective greene. the district announced it shut down a ma sonic lodge because of wild parties there. they claim teenagers have been partying at that lodge in northeast d.c. city officials said it led to violence over the past few months. they will hold a news conference to talk about the decision to shut down the lodge. a man has to act quickly when his car catches on fire. hundreds are thanking injured soldiers forirhe

hundreds gathered to salute those who1vz served. some held signs, others waved american flags. others cheered to honking cars. they wanted to show support for those who help injured soldiers recover including family members and hospital staff. there was a 9/11 tribute this morning outside a nursing home by two teenagers. we have the story. >> reporter: the bell tolled in st. mary's county. they remembered the victims. 2977 one for each person who died on 9/11 and the retired warriors like david smith who served in vietnam. they came to contemplate. not in my wildest dreams and just -- just being here to show

my respect is why i wore the uniform. >> reporter: a sense of patriotism and the great loss that occurred on that day is not unique to that ceremony. the two people who organized this were only 8 years old when it occurred. the 16-year-olds attended a youth leadership conference together and it spawned this idea. >> we came back from leadership camp and she called me and said we need to do something for september 11. we kind of just, it just went on from there. >> we started calling people and really they have been so supportive. >> the flags were donated. >> one flag for every person fell. innocent civilians and firefighters, policemen and we thought it would be a great idea to do that. >> reporter: while it commemorated the darkest day in

it's the most we have gotten in 20 days. we got rid of the deficit we had. now, at 6 degrees from the high of 69. the coastal low pressure system with tropical characteristics. it's burning out now lifting further in the north. the rain breaking up more and more. the locations get the heavy rain up through new england and pennsylvania. they could see anywhere from 1-2 inches of rain. the showers sliding east of the area. a little bit northern as well as areas around howard county and baltimore county. a few light showers left. aberdeen at 61 degrees and close to four inches of rain today. cecil county. that was hit the hardest today.

gaithersburg, maryland at 59 degrees. winds shifted to the northwest. a little drying taking place. high pressure will start to move in for sunday. it will promote dry across the area and give sunshine. we'll watch this low pressure system around the gulf of mexico. we got rid of one low that was tropical in nature, this could take on tropical characteristics with heavier rain for the south. the next chance for rain, the end of next week. 64 the temperature. 60 in cincinnati. cool 73 in st. louis. we'll move from the 70s tomorrow to the 80s by the end of the weekend. good weather coming up here. tomorrow morning, cloud cover left across the area. maybe one or two lingering showers there. well across maryland. the rest of the system rotates through. we could see a brief light shower come our way tomorrow. into the 70s for tomorrow. mostly cloudy and cool to start.

mission to the international space station. weather cancelled atechts yesterday and earlier today at the kennedy space center in florida. a man had to act quickly when his car caught fire and he was locked inside. he pushed on the doors to get out. they wouldn't budge. he thinks the electrical system broke down and locked him in. a really big snake. a python. huge python removed from a neighborhood in apop ka, florida today. a python more than 20 feet long. neighbors complained kids were trying to ride it. you gotta love it. officials say the owner didn't have a cage for the pet or a permit for the pet. >> could you sleep at night with that thing not in a cage?
