place and metro center. shuttle buses moved passengers in the affected areas for much of the morning. there's some good news tonight in the battle against the swine flu. a vaccine should be ready a week earlier than expected. health officials say people could start getting their shots for the h1n1 virus by the first week of october. for the majority of the vaccine is scheduled for release in mid october. last week officials announced that one shot will protect patients from the swine flu. doctors should soon have another tool to help fight seasonal flu this winter. the experimental drug is being shown to work as effectively as the well-established tamiflu in clinical trials. scientists gave it intraveen nous use. and they should that flu medicine is crucial in saving patient's lives, not just shortening the length of the flu. a man remains in critical

condition tonight. investigators say he was shot after trying to break into a cae pc.e hpeiccer. enihi t ms morningor ho ic nstrla stee in maryland. police sayt shotse weroftyduf-o spotted a cri in progress. darcy has been following the story and is live at the scene with more. hey, darcy. >> reporter: the police are still conducting the investigation. from what we understand from police sources, apparently there was a d.c. police officer who apparently lives in this area and he did notice at about 5:30 this morning, someone tampering with his personal vehicle. we don't know exactly what happened but we know that he did fire shots and that that suspect was wounded. we don't know if there was a confrontation leading up to the shooting but this is what the city police are saying. officer did fire shots and the suspect was wounded. it all happened here in the 3600 block of nicholson street in the city of hyattsville. man was shot and suffered

critical but nonlife-threatening injuries. we're told he's in the hospital at this hour. neighbors say they find this crime to be very disturbing. some neighbors say it's a very quiet neighborhood. others say there have been problems in recent past. there have been some other acts of violence and other problems with people breaking into vehicles in this area. but certainly a lot of concern in the neighborhood here that this shooting as well as the vehicle breakin would happen. more on the police officer, we did talk to d.c. police today. no word on whether that officer has been placed on administrative leave. we know the officer was off duty and the officer used ace service weapon. following the investigation all the information will be presented to the state's attorney's office and they will decide whether charges will be live. darcy spencer, news4, back to you. >> thank you. still ahead, the missing yale grad student who was supposed to get married today. what police have told nbc news

pro football season is upon us. >> you're right. it's greatest time of the year, hand's down. i love it. let's unwrap it right now. a sparkling brand new nfl season is here putting smiles on faces from coast to coast. kickoff sunday opened with a bang. we start in the nfc, dallas on the road at tampa bay. tony romo had a career day against the buccaneers. third quarter, cowboys up 13-7 looking for more. romohrows a perfect pass to roy williams, called threading the needle. williams does the rest. a 66-yard score with dallas up 20-7. fourth quarter, dallas leads by six. romo, he throws it out to the far sideline to an wide opened patrick clayton and he's gone. 80 yards for the touchdown. the longest td of his career he threw for 353 yard in three scores and the cowboys beat the bucks 34-21. andy reid and the eagles take on the panthers.
