of annie le as the yale university community mourns one of its own this evening. i'm jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. there have been no arrests in the murder of 20-year-old annie le. >> a lab technician at the building where authorities found le's body stuffed inside a wall sunday, the day that was supposed to be her big wedding day. michelle franzen joins us live from new haven with the latest on this investigation. we were waiting for autopsy results. >> reporter: we have to wait longer for the autopsy details of that report. they are not being released as expected today. also still no arrests. we heard earlier thn arrest was imminent. that's changed, too. investigators are still building their case and taking their time. the official cause of death will not be released as expected in the murder case of enany le.

the medical examiner's office said the state attorney made their request. the medical examiner had ruled the death a homicide monday, but so far there are still no arrests in the case. law enforcement sources tell nbc they are closing in on a suspect, someone who worked at the lab and had access to the high security facility. experts say the evidence and details point to a person who also knew the victim. >> he felt comfortable that he had, number one, enough time to assault the victim and kill her, and number two, to hide her body and get away and still not be seen by anyone else. >> reporter: but the killer was likely seen on camera. there are more than 70 surveillance cameras inside and around the lab. cameras captured le walking into the lab last tuesday. workers need keys to access certain parts of the building, including the basement where her body was found stuffed inside a wall panel. they questioned a lab worker and

revealed the suspect failed a lie detector test and had defensive-like wounds on his body. on the yale campus monday night, students and friends gathered for a candlelight vigil and say those who knew le felt she would have likely fought to the end. >> she would have yelled and screamed for help. i am not surprised this person has scratches on his body. >> reporter: students are dealing with a lost sense of security. yale added police patrols and the medical lab where le died, extra security measures are now in place. we are awaiting funeral details. a family spokesperson for the le family is expected to speak out later on tonight for the first time. jim? >>ish medical, earlier authorities said students don't have a reason to feel afraid like a killer is on the loose on the campus. what is the mood now? >> reporter: i think there is still a sense of fear on campus

from people we talked to and heard from throughout this week. certainly a sense of loss of some security here. how one of their own, a yale community member, could possibly do this. that's what it's looking like that everything is pointing to. just because of the sense of security measures in that building that we are needed to have access to that building. as a result, the yale campus has certainly been working hard to try and ease some of those fears and concerns they have. increased police patrols around campus and the medical facility where the murder took place. that has since reopened to workers there. there is an extra police presence there, as well. let's hope they make an arrest soon. michelle franzen live for news new haven, connecticut. closer to home, a bizarre incident being investigated at a local college campus. a burglar suspect is dead after being confronted by a johns hopkin stude armed with a

samurai sword. the events began to unfold after 1:00 this morning. police say a student heard a commotion inside his offcampus home, left his bedroom armed with the sword to check it out. before police arrived, the suspected burglar's hand was nearly cut off. he died shortly after that. darcy spencer will have more coming up on news4 at 5:00. tragedy for students at crosslind high school, a 13-year-old classmate who was hit by a car two weeks ago died from her injuries. megan mcgrath has more. >> reporter: alva forman walks her daughter to ashley high. this is a scary reminder of what can happen when crossing the street. >> i will be walking her to school. >> reporter: 13-year-old ashley

davis is being remembered as a friendly, outgoing teen. the freshman was struck by a car while walking to her bus stop on brinkley road. hospitalized for nearly two weeks, she died early monday morning. >> everyone's sad. everything is gone. >> i remember her smile. she had a fantastic smile. a very loving smile. >> miss her? >> very much. >> reporter: davis started her second week of classes when she was struck by the car. the sedan hit a good samaritan who pushed younger children to safety. grief counselors have been sent to crosslynn high. principal crystal fawcett said it was touf losing davis to high school. the thought of never seeing her again is very difficult.

>> the week before school opened, ashley came running into my office and sat on my lap, and said, i'm not ready to go. i want to stay here with you. i'm going to definitely remember that momt i had with her. just most importantly, the fact she was willing to assist the week before school opened, no matter what i needed for her to do. >> reporter: some changes are going to be made on brinkley road as a result of this fatal accident. street parking will be eliminated, road restriped and the shoulder widened. transportation officials say blind spots as well as an issue with sun glare may make that unwise. megan mcgrath, news4. six others were injured in that accident. been almost a week. we are waiting action from the house of representatives. south carolina congressman joe wilson is expected to be admonished today for his outburst during president obama's speech to congress. you'll recall wilson shouted,

"you lie" during the president's address last week. democratic house leaders are expected to enter a resolution of disapproval of wilson's conduct. wilson did apologize to the president and said one apology is enough. republicans have said wilson is a good man and the democrats are just using the incident to play politics. stocks rallied during the final hour of trading on this tuesday. the numbers are still settling in. right now the dow is up 55 points. nasdaq closed over 2100 with about a 10-point gain and the s&p is up three points. retailers got some unexpected good news. august sales jumped by the biggest amount in three years. the 2.7% boost is better than analysts predicted. the commerce department says the numbers were helped by auto sales from the cash for clunkers

program. gains were seen in many other areas, too. including electronics, appliances and sporting goods, and that could be a sign consumer confidence is growing. president obama is taking credit for the good economic news. he is continuing to push hard for health care reform today, which he says is a key part of our economic recovery. steve handelsman reports from capitol hill. >> reporter: president obama went to the chevy cobalt plan in ohio, where a thousand workers are being called back from lay-offs. the president took credit. cobalt was a big seller in the obama cash for clunkers program, giving general motors a boost after its government bailout. >> because of the steps we've taken, this plant is about to shift into high gear. >> reporter: retail spending kicked up in august, up 2.7%. >> we are not turning back, we're moving forward. >> reporter: at a speech to the

democratic senator max baucus plans to unveil a health care bill wednesday. the price tag is under $880 billion. baucus is trying to craft a bipartisan deal. it's unclear whether he will get republican support. >> time to roll up the sleeves. the fda has okayed the swine flu vaccine. this vaccine has been the subject of clinical trials that started back in july. studies show one dose of the shot can generate immunity in eight to ten days. experts originally thought it might take 21 days. the vaccine will go first to those considered high risk. >> well, we got to soak up more summer heat for another day. we hope you soaked up enough today. veronica has our forecast. >> it's not looking as bad as it did just 24 hours ago. had some nice september sunshine early on today. now you can see the clouds there on our skycam.

changing security at dulles. >> big honors for local schools. >> four stories making headlines in our area today. >> the metro worker who was hit by a train last thursday died of his injuries. 44-year-old john moore of arlington, was struck by a train in a metro tunnel in alexandria. metro officials say moore is the third workers this year to die on the job. smokers need to think twice before lighting up in rockville. city council voted unanimously last night to ban smoking at play grounds. smokers are not allowed within 40 feet of parks. the ban excludes private property. big changes necessary security today at dulles international airport. new checkpoints opened up. the snaking lines that have crowded the airport's main terminal lobby are gone. the new mezzanine is located underground and features new machines and 16 lanes to help

move more passengers along more quickly. >> and six maryland schools, including three from our area got a special honor this morning. the u.s. department of education nominated hyland elementary school in montgomery, southern high school and hammond in howard county as 2009 nional blue ribbon schools. the program recognizes schools that make significant progress in closing the achievement gap or whose students score at high levels. it's been required for many years. in two weeks, the district's safety inspection program is going away. one of the main reasons is cost. getting rid of the program will save the city about $400,000 this year. city leaders say it will mean less of a hassle to own a car in the district. this idea is not sitting well with some folks who think safety inspections are a good idea. >> i don't like that at all. what is the reasoning behind it? >> they want to balance the

budget. >> please. the budget will never be balanced in d.c., so you know, why take away the safety element about a car. >> you should always know that every six months you go and get your oil changed. i don't think they should have to do that. you should take responsibility for your car. >> while most cars won't need safety inspections any longer, they will still be required for commercial vehicles such as limousines and taxi cabs, and emissions testing for all cars will continue. the recession has forced many americans to cut costs and try to save. lots of folks are struggling to do that. a new survey from hsbc bank found 61% of americans only had enough savings put away to live on for about three months. 38% of those surveyed only survive a single month without an income. in today's nbc news insider report, carmen wong ulrich has tips how you can save more

dha. researchers at the university of texas southwest medical center compared babies with formula or formula supplemented with a high dose of dha. when 9 months old they completed a series of task to get a rattle. the babies in the dha group were more likely to get that toy. seems a lot of people are going green these days. the rv business is trying to get into the green game. today winnebago showed off its new green rv motorhome. it offered tours to law makers in front of the u.s. department of the interior. rv officials were onhand to explain the benefits of driving a green rv. the new model features a more eco-friendly vehicle and gets 15 miles per hour. >> not bad when you consider the size. from green to blue, lots of blue skies today. don't get used to it.

veronica is in the storm center to break it to us gently. >> that's right. we are still looking at two days with a northeasterly wind across the area. a little more optimistic now on our forecast. here is a look at city cam right now. city cam showing some of the high level clouds that have already moved in. the forecast as we go into the overnight period is that drizzle will be setting up after midnight with that northeasterly wind. as far as today goes, you can see some of the locations of fredricksburg, virginia. if i could get to you advance through some of the weather stations here, the high there 90 degrees. that was one of the warm spots. 89 the current temperature. there is manassas at 86. the high 92. the monthly rain just .32 inch. i'll show you spots that had much, much more rain down south over the last two days. just over 1.25 there in manassas.

his life on the screen, he managed to light up the lives of his many fans. >> swayze fans are paying tribute to him today. there was this season in hollywood earlier this morning. people left candles and flowers on his scar on hollywood walk of fame. his other passion was raising and riding horses. swayze was 57 years old. transit police in boston are looking into what caused a commuter train to crash this morning, senting about 13 people to local hospitals. about 100 people were aboard the inbound train when it struck the bumper at south station here. some passengers standing inside the train were thrown off their feet on impact. boston officials expect all city trains to return to service for the evening commute. the iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at george w. bush was released from prison

today. he was originally sentenced 3 years in prison for assaulting a foreign leader. his sentence was reduced on appeal to nine months. he is accusing iraqi security forces of torturing him right after his arrest with beatings, whippings and electric shots. he was a a little-known local tv reporter until he threw those shoes during president bush's final visit to iraq. the act deeply embarrassed the iraqi government but turned the reporter into a hero in the arab world. the five-tier terrorist threat level could be changed. a bipartisan task force is expected to recommend reducing the color-coded chart from five colors to three colors. the chart started after the 9/11 attacks. the panel is expected to make its recommendation to the president soon. craigslist is now the target
