nature brought in the ac. that northeasterly wind outside right now. a low in the sky. we had sprinkles, a bit of drizzle. not much in the rain gauge. our average high 79 degrees. remember i mentioned that in a quiz yesterday? here we are 65. this is really if we were now into the latter part of october. eight of the last 11 days, cooler than average. our temperature now outside has dropped to 64. look at up in caribou, maine. 63. friends in northern new england? early this morning in caribou, 29 did he grows. 29 degrees. they had a freeze. temperatures, were not into that northeasterly wind, in the 70s and 80s. there is the cloud cover. you can see a lot of showers down to our south. with the northeasterly wind, a few sprinkles. they've been few and far between. a couple for you folks around faulkier county. there is one around shady side,

annapolis. they are light when you see these light blues that don't amount to anything. with that northeasterly wind, a little lift out to the blue ridge and more out there, out to spots like front royal. that will be the story tonight. meanwhile, to our south, boy, look at the area of rain down into the carolinas. right now around macon, georgia. heavy rains. remember last year how the terrible, terrible drought in georgia? look at another surge of rain. for much of the summer, their rainfall has been well above average. you can get an idea also that a lot of that will be staying to our south. look at norcross, georgia, for the month, over seven inches of rain. for the nighttime hours, still a lot of clouds. we'll have that northeasterly breeze keeping us cloudy into tomorrow morning. with time, even though i think most of tomorrow will be cloudy, high pressure begins to push in, and as our winds turn more into the the north and eventually on to saturday in the northeast,

drier air comes in. a lot of sunshine. there may be some clouds lingering out toward the untains on the weekend. by and large, especially saturday, delightful. a warmer day tomorrow, too. temperatures tomorrow about 79 degrees. next four days here, how things shape up tomorrow. maybe some breaks in the afternoon. don't count on a lot of morning sunshine. temperatures a bit below average. average high getting 78, 79, both saturday and most of sunday we'll feature a lot of sunshine. by monday we've got two sundays. >> what about that other sunday? >> sometimes i like to extend the weekend. monday we get showers. the weekend looks good. >> we like to hear that. thank you, bob. air france has started training its pilots on how to manage a sensor malfunction in a situation similar to what caused that crash of flight 447. the pilot's union says air france is tryin to pin the crash on pilot error. the airbus a-330 went down in

the atlantic ocean june 1st off the coast of brazil. experts suggested the plane speed sensors iced over in a thunderstorm. the associated press reports airbus knew for seven years about problems with the sensors. airbus recommended replacing them. the airline waited until the old sensors wore out before making any changes. you may be able to pack heat next time you pack your bags on a trip for amtrak. the senate voted yesterday to allow amtrak passengers to carry hand guns in their checked luggage. the weapons have to be unloaded and locked. you are allowed to carry a gun in your checked bag before september 11th. the legislation must be reconciled with a house bill that does not contain the gun rights provision. president obama scrapped a controversial plan today to put missile defenses in eastern europe. the plan was developed under the bush administration and would have built a missile shield system in poland and the czech republic. today mr. obama said they have a better and cheaper way to

protect against attacks. >> our new approach will deploy technologies that are proven and cost-effective and counter the current threat and do so sooner than the previous program. >> the new plan will also likely please the russians who claim the bush plan would pose a threat to them. defense secretary robert gates approved this new plan. republican leaders say the plan makes america look weak and gives iran the opportunity to focus on long-range missiles. the vietnam veterans memorial fund is calling for photos of your loved ones who served in the war. organizers announced today a plan to showcase the picture of fallen veterans at the soon-to-be-built vietnam memorial's education center. when the underground center is finished, the photos will go on display on the veteran's birthday. this will be a visual tool to learn about those who served. >> this center will use the

photographs and the power of the lincoln and vietnam veterans memorial and the mall to teach a really important lesson to americans and especially america's youth. >> federal express is helping. it's going to open more than 1,600 of its stores for people to come in and scan the photos of their friends and family who served. pictures will be collected on a website until the center is built. more than 58,000 men and women's names are listed on the vietnam memorial wall. an army sergeant who ran into the line of enemy fire who save one of his men was recognized today with the nation's highest military honor. sergeant first class jared monte posthumously received the purpl medal of heart awhat are. his group was ambushed by the taliban in 2006. sergeant monte left cover and ran into the line of enemy fire to retrieve a wounded private.

we continue to keep an eye on the breaking news in largo, maryland. prince george's county fire and rescue crews rescuing people in a car that went off the road and down this embankment. these are live pictures. this happened about 4:30 this afternoon. the car lost control around central avenue and largo drive. mark brady, how is this progressing? are there people still in the car? >> reporter: it's gotten to the point where we made the rescue

of the civilians. the minivan went down about 40 feet down a steep embankment into that creek. we sent two of our firefighters down using safety harness for assess the patient's injuries. he was well enough to put him into a safety harness and he walked up that embankment with us. paramedics evaluated and he is on the way to a local hospital with minor injuries. >> how tricky is this, what you are doing now? we are looking at live pictures. this looks tricky. what do you have to do now? >> it's extremely hazardous. we have to use the skills and tools of our technical team. they use rescue ropes and fully to lower firefighters down into the area and pull them back up. there is no way you can walk up or down this footing by yourself. it is extremely wet. what we are doing right now is

assessing the safety of the tow truck driver, sending some of our firefighters back down to this tow truck to be pulled up that way to ensure it's done safely and no one is injured. >> okay. this looks like it will take you a while. the weather is not helping. that guy is lucky. unlucky to have gotten down there, but lucky he was able to make it back up there. mark brady, thank you so much. now to the family of a maryland woman killed in a crash. they say she will never get to see her children, her grandchildren grow up. now they say reports her killer is driving again makes their pain worse. christ gordon joins with us that story. >> reporter: this is the story of a drunk driver. the victim's family says it was blind-sided when it learned by accident that the drunk driver who killed their mother was back on the road and back in court just months after his release from prison. tonight we have the exclusive story.

november 2004, almost five years ago, yvonne hutchinson was killed by a drunk driver on route 231 in charles county on her way home from work. ryan reffert was charged being intoxicated and driving without a license. his 1-month-old child was in the back seat of the car at the accident. he pleaded guilty and served three years in jail. the family of yvonne hutchinson thought the sentence was too lenient at the time, but recentler were shocked to learn he was again driving illegally. a check of court records reveal he was arrested twice this past april, once in calvert county, once in st. mary's county, and faces charges of driving without a license. >> it's very frustrating that once he gets out he reoffends again. it seems there is no rehabilitation at all. that he just completely disregards the law, apparently, if he is going back to reoffending and driving without a license. he parentally he doesn't care.

>> the reality is that he does care. he is currently in alcohol treatment. he is probably about 30 days away from securing a valid license. >> reporter: his lawyer represents him on the charges as well as possible probation violations in charles county. we asked, why was he driving without a license? >> he feels horrible that he made the indiscretion to drive on two occasions to get to work. the other side of the coin was, he knew he had to continue to pay the restitution to the victims of the entire case and had to keep current in his child support obligation offer he faced the difficulty of going to jail for that. >> if he was rehabilitated, my mom is a very forgiving person and always looks for the best in everybody. if he was able to come out of prison and been rehabilitated, turned his life around, done something good with his life, but by reoffending and driving

without a license doesn't seem like -- he doesn't think the law applies to him. he doesn't care. >> reporter: his lawyer is trying to straighten out his life and become a responsible single parent. the family of yvonne hutchinson says the most important thing is that he never hurt another family by driving and that he never be allowed to get behind the wheel again drunk. wendy? >> christ gordon, thank you, christ. baltimore police say they don't think a student had the intent to kill when he used a samurai sword to confront an intruder on his property. the johns hopkins university student killed a man with a sword. investigators say the intruder lunged at the student. the suspected burglar died at the scene. the student has not been charged. police are consulting with prosecutors. a place for young people to hang out on the weekend is now closed. the district shut down the masonic loe because of too much violence.

police chief cathy lanier says officers received over 115 calls to the area, including the shooting of a teenager. >> we need safe places for young people to go and have entertainment and be safe while they're there and leave and proceed home at a reasonable time and be safe on the way home. >> the grand lodge is willing to work with this community. i have talked to the community members and laid out a plan of what we are going to do and we will have to get together to iron this out. >> the lodge hosted live music events on the weekends. community members circulated an online petition asking the city to take action against those disturbances. d.c. police are looking for a man tonight responsible for robbing taxi drivers. the robbies happen midnight last thursday in the 2200 block of 13th street northeast and two days earlier at 3:30 in the afternoon in the 1,500 block of montana avenue.

police say he uses the same m.o. he hails a cab and asks to be taken somewhere. once there, the robber implies he's a gun and demands money. is there a $10,000 reward for information that leads to his arrest and conviction. >> be careful the next time you park at a metro station in monroe county. transit theft are on the rise there, up 40 frrs from 2006 to 2008. the most common crime is thefts from vehicles parked at stations. police are encouraging people not to leave items like gps devices, stereos and laptops visible inside their cars. blasting your stereo inside your own apartment could get you evicted in prince george's county. a new bill in the works would force landlords to evict renters who receive three police citations for disruptive conduct within a year. this bill is not sitting well with landlords.

one said personal property rights go out the window if this bill passes. with the polls tightening in virginia's governor race, the candidates metaphor a critical debate in vote-rich northern virginia. julie carey is here to tell us if there were any game-changing moments today. >> reporter: no game-changing or gotcha moments. for bob mcdonnell and state interior creigh deeds. with the fairfax county chamber of commerce as the sponsor, much of the debate focused on transportation, taxes and energy poll system policy. with the opening handshake out of the way, both candidates quickly went on the defense yichl. bob mcdonnell criticized creigh deeds on his controversial 1989 pasters thesis. in it mcdonnell wrote working women undermine the family. >> my opponent spent most of his time running, i believe, a backwards-looking and negative

campaign. >> reporter: deeds didn't let up. >> i didn't write when i was 34 years old working women were a detriment to the family. i didn't write when i was 34 yearsld roe-v-wade ought to be overturned and the state ought to be involved in contraceptive decisions in working adults. >> i told you i speert working women. i'm frankly pretty insulted you would say my daughter that i supported and loved for 28 years to go fight in iraq, that i don't support working women. >> reporter: this crowd of business leaders came to hear about economic development and transportation fixes. deeds promises new revenue for roads in his first year, if elected. he won't say where the money would come from. >> i've been in the legislator 18 years. i've got a long record getting things done. i'm confident i can bring people together and get transportation fixed next year. >> reporter: mcdonnell's plan includes selling off liquor

be prepared for traffic delays on the tysons area. the work will begin midnight tomorrow. all lanes on 495 near the interchange will shut down. the work is expected to last about five hours. it should be completed by the time most people wake up saturday. there was a car that is using algae to fill up the gas tank. the algaist is a plug-in hybrid that runs on algae-based fuel. the veggie van organization

pepco says it will likely help over 8,000 people. >> it appears there will be an increase. last year we had about 8,000 residents that came in seeking assistance. 11:30 last night we had people camping out to get in line in order to be first for energy assistance. >> to help me pay my bills and teaching me how to use the energy in my home to stay warm in the winter time. >> the discount runs until 7:00 tonight down at the convention center. pepco tells us as of 3:00 this afternoon this he already helped about 5,000 people. many may be eligible for the low-income home energy assistance program. so far this year, the d.c. government has given more than $20 million in energy assistance. while many in this region struggle to make ends meet, a lot of areas residents are flush with prosperity. washington has most young people

let's head up to bob in the weather center to see if this rain is going to go away. >> we have some sprinkles. that's going to be the story for this evening. we are going to be seeing more of these. you can see, get an idea some of them come through around anne arundel county. by and large, it's not a widespread area of rain. as a matter of fact, here are some of the temperatures. look the at leesburg. only 61 degrees. we are going to be seeing more chillyweather, but here's how the next things look the next few days. we are going to see tomorrow, cloudy skies, some breaks by the afternoon. temperatures below average.

delightful day on saturday with high pressure in on us, very low humidity. look at those cool mornings. sunday morning, many spots will be in the low to mid 50s. as we get into next week, that's when the pattern changes once again. we'll get some southwesterly to southerly winds. temperatures will be near 80 degrees. both tuesday and wednesday and perhaps into thursday, we are going to look at some showers. again, look at the doppler right now. down to our south. that's where there's been real heavy rains. you can see that sweeping into parts of georgia and on into south carolina. all of this will really be staying more to our south heading out to sea. the tropics are quiet though. there is nothing much going on there. we are going to be seeing, again, general area of high pressure coming in. some fine weather as we go into the weekend with some sunshine and these current temperatures are going to be getting a bit higher by tomorrow. temperatures into the low 70s and then the mid to high 70s as

has now been charged with killing yale university graduate student annie le. >> the obama administration is changing its plans regarding a missile defense system. president barack obama today was at the university of maryland trying to drum up support for his health care plan. good evening, i'm jim vance. >> i'm doreen gentzler. that pitch for reform comes as key democrats and republicans on capitol hill agree that the plan that's on the table right now won't work. tracie potts is on capitol hill with the latest on all of this. >> reporter: hi there. the president today comparing choices in education to choices in health care. something that he's trying to get the law makers here on capitol hill to agree to, but based on the meetings we saw this afternoon and comments after those meetings, it looks like they're still pretty far apart.
