5:15 pm
5:16 pm
we are going to head back to dundalk and look at the chopper shots over dundalk, maryland in baltimore county. this is caused by a water main break that flooded from a nearby road and it has gushed out so much that it had flooded this entire blocks and blocks of this entire neighborhood. we haven't heard anything about injuries or what kind of damage. this is the scene in dundalk. a man convicted of killing an armored car driver in hyattsville, maryland, more than five years ago has now been sentenced to life plus 20 years in prison. it is a case a federal judge today called a cold-hearted murder. derrick ward joins us in the studio with more on the end of this trial. >> reporter: an ambush, an execution. those are some of the terms the judge and prosecutor used to describe the killing of the armored car courier in a hold-up in april 2004. today the man convicted of the killing learned his fate. jason swindler was gunned down
5:17 pm
as he stepped out of his vehicle august 6, 2004 at a bbent t bank this hyattsville. the robber got away with nearly $60,000. swindler lost his life. today the man convicted of that killing, 36-year-old earl whitley davis was sentenced to life plus 20 years for the crime, which the judge called a carefully pnned execution, with people lying in wait. >> i feel quite relieved. i think i speak for the whole family. >> i couldn't understand how earl davis could go and shoot him in the back like that. the money was there. it was a lot of bullets. >> reporter: the case was moved to federal court from county court so prosecutors could seek the death penalty. >> our thoughts were if mr. davis could be removed from the streets, nobody else would have to go through what we went through. >> reporter: davis' attorney asked the judge for a lighter
5:18 pm
sentence of 50 years much the judge gave the maximum allowable sentence under the given guidelines and gives the family some relief, but only some. >> all the testimony all the family members gave explained very well all the hardships that jason's loss has had on not only his parents, his sister, but most importantly on his sons. >> reporter: he leaves behind a young son nathan and wife chrissy who suffers from hodgkin's disease. now she is left in the hands of loved ones with only memories of their life together. >> the death penalty was taken off the table after it was determined the suspect had diminished mental capacity. he addressed the court briefly and said he was sorry for what the victim's family was going through, but he said he hopes to be given the chance to prove his innocence. >> thanks. president obama is going on a media blitz weekend to sell his health care reform package. he will be making an appearance

5:20 pm
will that get it through? >> i think there's going to be a lot of negotiation. effectively, the baucus bill is the president's bill. i don't think anybody would disagree with that here. there are some adjustments that have to be made if they are going to get somebody like olympia snowe to vote for it. they want to go for 60 votes and need a republican to do that. there will be trading and a lot of negotiations. i think that is the blueprint for where they want to move. >> the most important thing is he will be on "meet the press" and he will make this all crystal clear for all of us, right, david? >> and by the way, there are a couple of other interesting things he'll talk about in terms of afghanistan, the issue of race coming up this week. it will be interesting to watch. >> it should be lively. . you can catch david's interview on "meet the press" sunday at 10:30 in the morning. >> we have that, football, a gorgeous saturday and sunday? >> yes, indeed. we had a lot of clouds, cool air

5:23 pm
are heading out toward the mountains of west virginia and blue rie. tomorrow 76 delightful degrees. temperatures later on will be dipping into the low 70s. then that drier air, that reenforcing surge of cool dry air comes in. tomorrow morning, up and early, almost 7:00 that sunrise. 50s to low 60s. one of those sparkling blue sky kind of days with a few puffi cumulus clouds forming. tomorrow afternoon, temperatures delightful. into the mid 70s. after that, we are going to see some of the clouds coming in by the afternoon for sunday. any rain showers, i think, will be late monday and on into tuesday the way it looks now with temperature in the 70s, tuesday, wednesday, even a touch of humidity returning. the weekend, a winner. >> loving it. >> thank you, bob. coming up, a traffic alert. parts of the beltway will be shut down later tonight. >> how metro is working to stop suicides on the tracks.
