good morning, everyone. welcome to the 9:00 edition of "news4 today." m eun yang. we are going to take a look at the forecast with meteorologist chuck bell at the storm center 4. good morning, chuck. >> good morning to you. off to a beautiful start this saturday morning. welcome to your weekend, everybody. blue skies overhead. it looks like we are going to have nice weather all through not just today but lasting into tomorrow as well. you can see all those blue skies and shadows out there. temperature now at national airport hopped up to 65 degrees. still 60 degrees at andrews air force base. 63 at dulles international airport. 61 in frederick, maryland. 60 degrees in winchester, virginia. it is going to be a nice one today. plenty of shine and temperatures up into the mid 70s this afternoon. with nearly 100% sunshine. looks like our great weather will finish up into tomorrow as well. detail check of the 7-day forecast and, of course, eun,

saturday in the fall, that means your college football forecast will be coming up as well. for all of the local games and other tes. >> we are looking forward to that. thank you, chuck. the red cross is stepping in to help hundreds of maryland families whose holmes were flooded when a massive water main broke. the six-foot wide main broke late yesterday afternoon in dundalk. it caused major floogd and many residents had to be rescued from water chest-deep in and areas. the water receded and turning their attention from getting people out of the area to getting them back in their holmes. >> reporter: danger is over and cries sis over. and now is the job which we are all ready to do and doing it to the to get people back. >> maryland senator mikulski called yesterday's break a disaster. there hasn't been a water main break like this in maryland since the one in bethesda last year. a water main break flooded river road just a couple of days before christmas. rescue crews had to pull drivers

from their cars stranded in rushing water. that water main on river road was only 66 inches. the one that that burst into done talk was 72 inches. new information about a deadly fire in prince george's county. firefighters tell us they believe it was arson. they responded to a home on yak avenue in capitol heights this morning around 2:30. they found one person dead. exact cause is under investigation but the fire is being called suspicious. right now we don't know how the victim died, how old the victim was or whether the victim was a man or a woman. the fbi and several local police departments are participating in an exercise today. that's the first for the d.c. area. they were staging a mock trial abduction designed to test the skills of first responders and analysts and investigators. it is taking place in alexandria and that's where our derrick ward joins us now live this morning. derek, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you, eun. we are in the parking lot of the plaza 500 shopping center off edsall road in alexandria. if you look around you see there

are lots of folks from law enforcement, the fbi, local command center, yellow crime scene tape. usually when you see something likethis, it is a bad thing. this time it is a good thing. it is a mock child abduction. making sure they have the right procedures in place for something like this actually happens. people from local law enforcement and residents. if you are out here and see this high police presence don't be alarmed. it is all about being prepared. >> the fbi and fairfax decided to put together a mock child abduction training exercise because when in the event of a real child abduction, you could never have enough training. every second counts. and so the nice folksf the overlook community, alexandria, virginia, offered their assistance. they are providing their neighborhood for part of the ex-er ice and some of the residents are even role players. what we have found tabletop exercises are good but nothing

compares to a real live training exercise, role players, somebody is going to be playing the victim's family. the victim's friends, neighbors and witnesses. we actually have, you know, the bad guy as well. >> reporter: this is much about getting law enforcement prepared as it is about getting residents prepared. how to be good exists and what to look out for and what to do should the unthinkable happen. this one has a happy outcome to it. the key here is to do this sort of thing so have you the same outcome in real life. live in alexandria, back to you in the studio. >> derrick ward. derek, thank you. the man who carjacked a woman and l police on a high-speed chase through two states is still on the run. thursday night in gainesville, virginia, man forced a woman into her car at gun point and started driving. officers caught up with him and chased him into prince george's county. that's where he crashed and ran away. the woman inside the car was not hurt. there's new insight into the mind of the man accused of killing yale grad student annie le.

some people who knew him say raymond clark was controlling and often clashed with people in the science lab where le was doing research. clark reportedly september a text message to le on the day she disappeared to discuss the cleanliness of mouse cages. police found clark's dna at the murder scene and that investigators saw clark trying to hide cleaning equipment that was splattered with le's blood. police say that they may never know what his motive was. he's currently being held on $3 million bond. a grizzly scoffry in silver spring. a woman believed to be missing was murdered. her body was discovered in plastic storage container more than two weeks after her disappearance. a 17ier old is under arrest. jane watrel has the story. >> reporter: when rosa vazquez varned worried neighbors circulated flyers. police found her body hidden in a backyard plastic storage container. >> it is sad to hear this news. last time i saw her was the day

before she disappeared. then all of a sudden they said she disappeared. it was shocking. >> more shocking was the arrest of 17-year-old priamo portillo-guevera. according to the charge documents, he was dating the victim's daughter. the victim's daughter let priamo portillo-guevera into the family's home the night of august 30th and kept him hidden in the base many. after the daughter left for school, the spect texted the daughter her mother found him there. an argument ensued. police believe the suspect killed the victim in her home and hid her body in the backyard container. >> her family is in shock. and we want to be sensitive to them before we start asking them more questions about the details that led up to this. the main thing is that we believe that we have her assailant in custody. >> reporter: rosa was hard working and happy. they are unnerved by her murder. >> translator: it is scary.

i live here by myself with my daughter. to think this could happen to another woman my age is very scary. >> it was a shock that, you know, she was in the backyard and nobody knew about it. >> reporter: jane watrel, news4. president obama is rejecting claims that race is playing a factor in the health care debate some democrats, including former president jimmy carter, had maintained rac may be motivating some republican oppositions to the president's plan for health care reform. but the president told "meet the press" david gregory that this issue has been playing out since before he ever entered the white house. >> argument that's gone on for the history ofhis republic sxlik that is what's the right role of government, how do we balance freedom with our need to look after one other. i talked about this in the joint sessions speech. this is not a new argument. it always invokes passions. >> vice president biden is expected to dive into the health care debate this week. he will deliver his first major

nba player and prie george's county native delonte west facing serious weapons charges. west is a guard for the cleveland cavaliers. an officer pulled him over on i-95 thursday night for speeding and making an unsafe lane change. police say they found three guns on west. two handguns and a shotgun. he's facing speeding and weapons charges. there is no word on why west had those weapons. amazing story now of survival in the rocky mountains. a colorado woman has been rescued after crashing her car and spending five days traed in the wilderness. >> reporter: this was the scene tuesday afternoon. 68-year-old cynthia hoover had been rescued.

five days after her car careened off of central city highway. the car tumbled and flipped and landed outside the view of passers-by. badly hurt, hoover could hardly move. but she braved the environment letting her hair absorb the rain so she could drink. >> as it turned out we all heard something. >> reporter: it was john northern who delivered her long awaited rescue. he had been giving a tour at the heidi gold mine. >> at some moment applause we were talking and the lady again said help. >> reporter: northern took off in a sprint. >> she was located there on the slope. >> reporter: the woman he found was bruised and battered. northern called the mine manager, chris stone. >> i ran around the corner with the first aid kit. >> reporter: they kept hoover safe, giving her watder and keeping her conscious. >> she knew when the crash was. frankly, at the time we took that as an incompany herent thought. we just -- it is unbelievable, you know, some one had been there since thursday. >> reporter: this is where flights landed. from here it took hoover to st. anthony 's and where she remains

tonight. her family tells us she has 11 broken ribs, a broken neck, and a broken back. all of that, of course, sounds very bad. but her family tells us that the prognosis is very good. >> that's the news everyone needed to hear. with a positive outcome like that, you can feel good about what happened. >> reporter: with the crash happening, just outside central city, rthern stlas is no other way to explain it. a stroke of luck. >> sequence of events that led to her being found is pretty delicate. >> what an amazing story of survival. >> using your hairing to collect water. yikes. >> good instincts. >> beautiful sunshine on the way for today. i'm optimistic. we keep it for even tomorrow. a check of the forecast coming right up.

crackers and fresh fruit. kids will like it. peanut butter and all-flute spread. put a few berries in there. this will increase your children's fruit intake and fiber intake for the day. >> smash that together. >> smash it all together. >> carry it too school. that's great. peanut butter is great protein. >> it is great protein. here's the way to add water and fiber to it. the trick is celery. >> celery. >> celery. just add little fruit to the top. >> raisins. >> craisins. >> ladybugs on a log. >> you can also use m&ms. wrap them up and take them to school. >> kids love that. >> kids love raw vegetables and ranch dip. >> they do. the trick is small containers for portion control. >> precut veggies. perfect snack. send it in a -- >> insulated lunch box. >> kids love these.

>> whole wheat crus i cut up the vegetables really small on this and hid it under the cheese. >> hiding under the cheese. you sago ahead and wrap the leftovers for back to school. >> makes a perfect lunch. >> you are not crazy about light bread sandwiches. >> i'm not. the trick to a hethier sandwich is use the whole wheat wraps with low-fat cream cheese, add the fruit, dried fruit. >> and you have fiber. >> you do. roll it up. >> i think it looks cute. they will eat it. >> i think so. >> kids love corn chips as snacks. >> loaded with sodium and fat. trick is bake your own and using corn tortillas. cut them into triangles. you are going to spray them with low-fat spray. >> sprinkle them with a little bit of salt. >> watch the sodium. >> bake them for how long? >> 350 degree, ten minutes come out beautifully golden brown. package them for school. >> good snacks. >> kids love cookies in their lunch box. >> trick is, though, bake a

cause of death in the u.s. a deadly shooting inside of a subway station in mexico caught on tape. we must warn you now the video is graphic. the man was writing graffiti on a wall when police approached him. he pulled out a gun and started shooting. it happened inside major station in mexico city just as the train pulled in. he killed two people and shot five others before police finally subdued him. according to witnesses, the man said he was shooting to get revenge on the government. mexican police are adding hundreds of officers to patrol the subway system. new details today in the high-proceed trial terrorism investigation. a senior intelligence official says the man questioned for three days by the fbi has indicated that he has a direct association with al qaeda. the fbi discovered that his laptop had bomb making instructions and feared that he was planning some kind of attack. zazation attorney said his client never met with al qaeda operatives and isn't involved in any kind of terrorism.

zazi is expected to be questioned again today. new information about a deadly fire in prince george's county. firefighters tell us they believe that it is arson. responded to a home on kayak avenue in capitol heights this morning around 2:30. they tell us they found one person dead. the exact cause is under investigation. but the fire is being called suspicious. right now we don't know how old the victim is or whether the victim is a man or a woman. officials in maryland are still assessing the damage caused by yesterday's massive water main break. the six-foot main broke late yesterday afternoon flooding the baltimore suburb of dundalk. the water has receded and crews are working to help residents return to their holmes. officials are also warning those residents that they may be victimized again not by floodwaters but by contractors trying to make money atheir expense. >> we have had predator contractors go into the community and say they were september by baltimore county and telling people they had to sign a conact and in order to clean up their houses to do what

sticky situation for rush hour drivers in albuquerque, new mexico. a tractor trailer hauling fresh fruit flipped over on the interstate yesterday afternoon. spilling its cargo across the highway. it led to several more accidents and caused big backups in both directions. it took crews several hours to clean up the mess. >> yikes. i'm glad it didn't happen around here. our traffic is bad enough. >> we don't need anything else sticking to the road. >> there you go. especially several hours. sunshine is out. it is going. everybody is excited for another weekend filled with outdoor activities. just sitting around doing nothing but enjoying the great weather out there. couple of weeks in a row. cloudy skies all week long. three weekends in a row now, the weather has really turned the

corner. just in the nick of time. in fact, this weekend it turned the corner earlier because last weekend we had the clouds sticking around for saturday. that's not going to be the case this beautiful saturday. we have bright sunshine out there right now. it is going to stick around. all day long. there is a live picture outside from our city camera today with a bright blue sky hanging overhead as we look across the potomac river into prince george's county. good looking day. that's fedex field. fedex field. yes. guaranteeing a redskins win tomorrow. right, everybody? >> we are? >> of course. of course. luckily they don't have me on the team. that will help their chances of winning. 65. that's our current temperature at national airport. dew point nice and low. 51 degrees. nice northeasterly breeze at 15 miles per hour. keeping things stirred up. cool september and dry september so far. half inch behind average in rainfall. and two degrees cooler than average now for the entire month of september. so a little break from the faly warm august. believe it or not, five degrees cooler than last september was. right now it is 65 in town.

62 in baltimore. and 63 degrees in howard county. 63 also in frederick county, maryland. 60 degrees on the nose in martinsburg, west virginia. on the whole, going to be a day filled with sunshine across the area for today. and anything you want to do outside. whether it is sailing or just sitting around doing nothing. good weather for and it high pressure building on in. as it continues to settle down, this weather front which broughts that northeasterly wind and cooler temperatures than we saw yesterday, that weather front is stalling out along the virginia/north carolina border. we will keep plenty of sunshine for today and tomorrow. this area of high pressure moves off the east coast late tomorrow and it will start to allow a little bit more of a southwesterly wind flow in the atmosphere and that will bring high clouds back into our skies late tomorrow afternoon and our chances for rain start to ramp back up again as we get into monday afternoon and monday evening. by and large, the weekend is looking great. and monday certainly won't abwashout. we are having an unsettled weather pattern as we get into the middle parts of next week. could face several days of the clouds and showers chances.

they set stacks of layoff notices on fire yesterday. the best part of the whole thing, none of the notices got to their intended targets. they were supposed to go to the fire fighters and other city employees but a last-minute bill raised the sales tax one cent and created enough money to save the jobs. a bitter end to last season for the washington capitals fans. what's the team's head man doing to enjoy sweet success this season? bruce boudreau sat down with lindsay czarniak to discuss the upcoming season as well as culinary peculiar area in this week's edition of "lunch with lindsay." >> scary because everybody knows i'm sort of a burger kind of guy. i haven't seen this place. it is going to be interest. >> is that like your go-to burger? >> well, it is -- fast food.
