11:30 pm
11:31 pm
>> al: to arizona we go for the first sunday night game that brought you from glendale, arizona. larry fitzgerald and kurt warner and the cardinals hosting peyton
11:32 pm
manning and the colts. all get it started "football night in america" at 7:00 eastern time next week. >> cris: sunday night games always this much fun? every game we've done so far has been great! >> al: we're on a pretty good roll here. so is the guy they drafted out of the usc. four yards into the end zone. sign owe rice moss brings it back out to the 25 by sinorice moss. giants have been shredded on the ground tonight. the cowboys in this half alone have rushed for 172 yards. take a look at that. on the ground tonight, dallas 251 yards. most on the ground in any game since 1993. that is 16 years ago at philadelphia. they will probably add to that figure. >> cris: it's eli time again here now.
11:33 pm
>> al: cowboys have the lead despite being minus four in the turnover ratio department. giants have not turned the ball over tonight. romo has thrown three picks and there has been a fumble as well. from the 25, four-man rush. dump it underneath to kevin boss and kevin boss with a flag down back at the 23 yard line for the moment. would have picked up a first down, pending the call. last-minute consultation with mike carey. >> cris: big call, too. first down. or first and 20? >> referee: there are two fouls on the play.
11:34 pm
both on the offense. personal foul leg whip on number 80. declined. holding on the offense number 69. ten yards. still first down. >> al: seubert holding call. second down. >> cris: rich seubert right here. see what we get. i guess it happens right there. >> al: wow. >> cris: wow. >> al: i didn't see it there but there is a leg whip right there. >> cris: wow. >> al: that makes it first and 20 and giants back at their own 15 yard line. >> cris: i thought they were both tough calls. >> al: manning throws and it's caught. bradshaw.
11:35 pm
he gets taken down outside and ratliff, the nose tackle, going outside to cover the back in the flat. >> cris: pretty amazing when you see a nose tackle cover in the flat, a very quick back. look at number 90. the nose tackle go out there and make that play. we've been showing you all of the penetration all night long. what kind of a defensive scheme was that? only if you dive like that and make that play. >> al: he is 105 pounds heavier than the guy he is covering. >> cris: goodness gracious. >> al: second and 18. crowd in full throat. all 105,000. manning pressured. throws on the run. and that is caught by derek hagan. playing in this point of the game. again, because of the injury earlier on to domenik hixon. otherwise, hagan would be on the bench. >> cris: this giant offensive
11:36 pm
line, aer taking all of the abuse the last time the two teams played here giving up eight sacks, has been brilliant. they have just absolutely been brilliant. really comes down to this play. >> al: that news for the cowboys if they get the ball back and are trailing. barber is done for the night. a time-out is taken here before a third down and six. . two-minute warning. two minutes. .
11:37 pm
11:38 pm
>> al: wendy's postgame report will following. bob in arlington and the gang back in new york. no time-out taken. two-minute warning. giants have two time-outs. remember, they took one earlier and if they don't make a first down here, there is going to be a very tough decision for tom coughlin to make. do you go for it on fourth down? or do you punt it away and use your two time jos and hope to stop it. he hopes it's moot and they can complete one here. they do so we'll never know the answer to that. caught by steve smith up at the
11:39 pm
39 yard line. >> cris: mr. reliable one more time. he is sort of become the amani toomer of this team as they come back up with a hurry-up. >> al: at the 40 yard line. all they need is a field goal so they can milk a little bit of the clock down the field. plenty of time. two time-outs. pass is caught and then it is dropped. manningham had it initially and scandrick was all over him. he never had it. incomplete. >> cris: i think that's a break for the giants. two-yard completion. you can see manningham basically waving his arms trying to talk the official into an incompletion. that is about the strangest looking thing i've ever seen. >> al: right. would ve stayed in bounds and clock kept running. >> al: four man pressure. haven't run any blitzes yet. >> al: second and ten from the 40.
11:40 pm
now they show blitz. manning throws and that is caught and that will be a first down and that is caught by kevin boss, the tight end. he is tackled by sensabaugh and the ball is now in cowboy territory. ticking down to 1:15 left. >> cris: kevin boss, what he lacks for quickness is pretty good in the open field once he gets running and just ran away from sensabaugh there. >> al: from the 47. four-man rush. manning throws. caught. caught at the 41 is smith. >> cris: eli totally under control. looks like he is so comfortable in this situation. he certainly has seen this one before. >> al: first down away from field goal range. and manning will throw and that pass is high. incomplete. intended for steve smith. the clock stops with 39 seconds. >> cris: what do you call that? putting the kabosh on him in? that was wide open and he missed it.
11:41 pm
i think smith would have had room not only to make the catch but the ability to get out of bounds. he had the entire sideline open to his side. that was a big miss. >> al: you see tynes loosening up. he told andrea before the game he thinks it's 53 yards in this direction is his range. it's also his career long. that time-out is now taken on defense, dallas will spend a time-out. so 39 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, two time-outs remaining now for each team. you can open up a palace that costs a billion one, you need a game like this. >> cris: a great show. absolutely. but for the cowboys, i think that time-out might be good for them. i was watching their pass rushers and they were clearly getting exhausted. it's hot out here tonight and that two-minute offense coming down the field. so now you get the situation
11:42 pm
where your guys catch their breath a little bit and maybe you finally get a little pressure on eli. >> al: do you blitz tm? i mean, they've been sending four. cris: i don't think you have a choice, because, really, you need, what, about five, six yards here in this situation. so if you just sit back and let them work the zone, it's pretty easy to find a hole out there. >> al: third down and four. from the 41. >> cris: they're coming. >> al: it looked like it was tipped and caught to the 33 yard line by mario manningham. a first down. 30 conds to go. and at the 33 yard line. you're looking at at about a 51-yard field goal. again, the giants with two timeouts. manning over the middle and that is clearly within the range for tynes and steve smith take makes the catch and stop the clock
11:43 pm
with 13 seconds remaining in the fourth period. >> cris: i tell you what, eli manning is just putting on a show out here. sometimes it takes a lucky break along the way when youet a good drive going. third down. they are going to get a hand on this ball right here. >> al: they are. yes, sir. >> cris: that's ratliff. one of the tough things for mike jenkins, you have to know the situation there. when you're talking about you're bringing a blitz, you cannot let those slants beat you. that's most team's hot reads in that situation and he had to realize what it was. steve smith then picking up a big first down and getting them a lock in field goal range. everybody's heart! >> al: mother and wife and it's not over yet. and the giants have been the
11:44 pm
masters of deflection tonight. they had deflected romo pass off witten's foot that led to an interception and juggling catch in the end zone for a touchdown and now a deflected pass that winds up in the receiver's hands. the ball is at the 21 yard line. the giants have a time-out. all manning will do is milk the rest of the clock. >> cris: that was strictly so they didn't have to kick off after this field goal. >> al: right. >> cris: take the time-out no matter what at four seconds the game is over after this field goal attempt. >> al: here comes tynes in and deossie to snap. tynes made 38 and 26 and had a 29-yard miss. so tynes, last year, got hurt and then john carney came in and kicked well enough to go to the pro bowl.
11:45 pm
but tynes gets the job back and carney goes to new orleans and tynes can now become the hero the second week of the season. >> cris: you know what is so significant about this one? the giants, if they win on this kick, that means they will have two wins, both against divisional opponents and coming in here and knocking offer the cowboys can't get any bigger. >> al: and beginning a three-game road trip as well. >> cris: wade said we should call a time-out and freeze them. wade is going over to the official now. >> al: 37-yard attempt. >> cris: wow. >> al: feagles got a high snap down and the kick is -- >> cris: wade got the time-out. >> al: he did. they got the time-out. it's not over. >> referee: time-out dallas. >> al: he gets a time-out at the
11:46 pm
last second. >> cris: i tell you what, wade waited till the last millisecond. i'm telling you, i wasn't sure he got it off in time. >> al: right. >> cris: wade phillips is standing right next to the official. when he calls for this time-out, the official reacts immediately but wade, i'm telling you! there was not a half a second between that time-out and the snap. >> al: feagles got the high snap down and then tynes kicks it just inside the left upright. you had the me mature tell brags and they have to do it again. to win the game.
11:47 pm
and it's good. and so the new york giants can celebrat on the home turf, the new home turf of the dallas cowboys in a wild game. giants with 12 possessions tonight and six scores. two touchdowns, four field goals by tynes and at the gun, the giants win it by a score of 33-31. >> cris: a field goal kicker, you have to treasure the moment. certainly did. boy, what a great job, though, by eli manning on that last drive, taking them down the field for the game-winner. >> al: eli throws for 330 tonight. the dallas cowboys in the opener of the stadium spoiled by the giants at the very end. a classic ballots. 33-31. .
11:48 pm
coming up next it's the wendy's postgame report. .
11:49 pm
11:50 pm
>> al: what does it feel like to silence 100,000 plus? ask eli manning and lawrence tynes. last play, the field goal, the giants win 33-31. andrea kremer is down on the fold and with her is eli manning. andrea?
11:51 pm
>> andrea:he 12th come isback in the fourth quarter overtime of eli manning's career. seems like old hat for you. what was your two-minute warning. >> we had enough time and had time-outs so we had some key plays. i was able to get off to a bad start with the holding call to start the drive. first and 20 but i hit old scramble and hit hagan and then got a key first down the to steve smith. so we made some plays and got a tipped ball and mario manningham played a great game and lawrence tynes kicks the field goal. >> andrea: so many questions about your wide receiving corps and you lose domenik hixon. what have you able to establish ten catches each tonight your wide receivers some. >> they are work hard and competitors and show that tonight. mario madgreat catches and touchdown catch spectacularktacularspectacular. hook and go with steve. those two guys are playing outstanding. we t toeep it going and they can make fun plays for us.
11:52 pm
>> andrea: at what point did you realize this game is going to be on your shoulders the running game not that effective? >> they are tough and good defense and run safety sound and we got off to a great -- we had great drives but got to fd ways to get touchdowns. it's killing us. too many field goals. we need more touchdowns. we got a couple tonight but it's not enough. >> andrea: eli, thanks for your time. bob, remember, in a great segue to next week eli and peyton the first brothers to throw over 100 touchdowns and we see the colts next week. >> al: in arizona. now check in with tony dungy and rodney harrison. coach, a couple of questions about time-outs. shouldn't they change this rule the last second freezing? it turned out to be moot but takes the drama out. seems like a strange rule. at the end of the game in the last minute, did you think the cowboys should have used some time-outs on defense to save a few seconds to get the ball back? >> that is a tough rule the way they have it now freezing the
11:53 pm
kicker. i like the idea of taking a time-out to freeze them but i never like to give them a practice kick. i thought wade should have taken it before he actually made the kick. and i also agree with you, bob. i think they should have used time-outs once the giants got in field goal range. you got to use your time-outs to try to get the ball back. >> on the first part, obviously, you can take a time-out to freeze the kicker. i would like to say when the play clock is five seconds there is a cutoff. you can't do it at the last millisecond and create that kind of confusion. let's talk about the game overall. rodney, your take on it. >> well, quarterback definitely needs to take care of the ball. i mean, you know as a head coach, the quarterback is the most important position and he can't keep turning the ball over. i mean, they played a phenomenal game and they were aggressive and they were very physical and, yet, they keep turning the ball over. tony romo, that's why they question if he can win the big game gause because he keeps turning the ball over. >> you look at what dallas did i thought they dominated both
11:54 pm
sides of the line of scrimmage and ran for over 250 yards and they should have won this game handily but you can't throw three interceptions and set up a all of those points for the giants. >> what impressed me tonight was those young receivers especially steve smith. critical down and distances. he was able to make the play. sure hands and get the first down. just very impressive. >> yeah. those young receivers did a great job and now the giants have early control of this division. bob? >> they do, tony. thanks to you and to rodney for staying up late bus. a couple of injury updates from peter king. donovan mcnabb remains doubtful for the game next week against kansas city and bothered still by a broken rib. if he can go, obviously, he will start.
11:55 pm
11:56 pm
>> al: michaels and collinsworth back here. a note in the history of the giants, the new york football giants the first time two receivers have ever had ten catches pis in a game and exactly what manningham and smith did. tony dungy summed it up pretty well. the giants have not taken control of the division because they've won two games and beaten the cowboys on the road and one more time but that is at the meadowlands. >> plaxico burress is gone and they found the receivers. the guys made huge plays in the game but zero sacks and zero turnovers. if i had to pick a mvp i would
11:57 pm
say the giants offensive line. in dallasv']' =9ujr)u as x;ñ was the difference in the ball game. they turn right around the next time despite all of the noise, despite the big crowd, zero sacks in the game and eli looked sharp. al: wh over four times and your opponent don't you're lucky you're in the game the laconds. >> cris: all they have to try to do now is get it in the red zone because that is an issue all year. >> al: another retractable roof next sunday. peyton and the gang.dianapolis colts heading west. kurt warner and larry fitzgerald and the nfc champion arizona cardinals. "football night in america" will get it started at 7:00 eastern and 4:00 pank pacific. late local news. "dateline" on nbc coming up next. until next week, al michaels and cris collinsworth and andrea kremer and our entire sports crew staying good night from arlington, texas. . -- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com
