the death toll is rising as floodwaters sweep across the southeast. a major headache for drivers with closures on i-95 in virginia. and why those energy shot drinks may be a jolt to your system. but we begin tonight with a teacher allegedly found drunk in a car with a young student. good evening, i'm doreen gezler. jim vance is off tonight. police in fairfax county say the 27-year-old teacher was arrested as she sat in the car with a 15-year-old student. she's face ago charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor but the investigation won't end there. police want to know why the two were together. jackie bensen is in fairfax county with more. >> reporter: doreen, police say they are investigating the nature of the 15-year-old's relationship with the teacher. this is the police mugshot of 27-year-old high schoolteacher

valerie roeseler, taken not long after she was arrested and being charged with being drunk in public and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. about 1:30 sunday morning a patrol officer noticed a car in the otherwise empty parking lot of a community center in the town house area of the lorton area. they found an visibly intoxicated roeseler and 15-year-old boy. roeseler was arrested. officers learned the boy left home to meet her without telling his parents. they do not believe she gave him any alcohol. roeseler has been suspended without pay from her job as a teacher at hayfield secondary school. they say the young man she was founwith is not a student there. roeseler was released on bond. no one answered her door in the home in the alexandria section of fairfax county. roeseler and the young man met in the spring of last year but

officials say he is not a fairfax county public school student. doreen, back to you. >> jackie bensenjackie. tonight the search continues for the man accused of carjacking a woman in virginia and leading police on a chase into maryland. virginia state police released a sketch of the guy with the help of the victim. police say he stole the woman's suv at gunpoint. they were at a parking lot in gainsville last thursday. officers ended up chags the suspect into prince george's county where he lost control and crashed the suv. he reportedly escaped patrol on foot. anybody fwhfgs should call lice. big headache for drivers using i-59 in virginia tonight. all six lanes of the north and southbound interstate will be shut down between route 1 and lorton roads exits at midnight. it's all part of a massive $123 million project near lorton. this is a live look at the traffic near the mixing bowl, which is already starting to build up and slow down as you can see. jane watrel is near lorton with

more. how bad does it look, jane? >> well, it's getting slow down here, doreen. we're down to one lake of traffic along i-95 south of lorton in either direction. and in about 90 minutes, all of the lanes are going to close. it's one of the most heavily traveled highways on the east coast, with 250,000 motorists driving each way on i-95 in northern virginia. for truckers, it's often a traffic nightmare. >> it's really tough. a lot of stopping and traffic and stuff. it's really tough. >> reporter: the virginia department of transportation has be trying to fix one of the area's major traffic choke points by adding a fourth plain of traffic between the fairfax county parkway and route 123. a major closure is about to take place to move the project along. >> we have to remove the overhead sign expansion that goes from the current lane to the far side and you can understand if we had a swap lane on each side, we would be short. so we had to put up a new

overhead sign extension so we had to take the old one down. >> reporter: that means tonight d tuesday two of the three lanes of i-95 will close at 10:30. all lanes will shut down at midnight for one half hour. then again for another 30 minutes between 1:00 and 2:30 in the morning. many trucks are scrambling to find an alternative route. >> i have to schedule around it. i will make it through tonight but tomorrow might be tough. >> reporter: vdot officials say they have to choice. a nighttime closure causes the least pain to drivers. >> we impact traffic like we are tonight closing it down. we have to do it during the lowest peak periods of the day and that happens to be later at night. >> reporter: vdot says motorists can expect closures on wednesday and thursday night as well but they will only be partial lane closures. not all of the lanes of i-95 and they'll happen overnight as they finish up phase one of is six-mile project. reporting live along i-95 south of lorton, i'm jane watrel.

back to you, doreen. >> thanks for the warning, jane. aaa is calling a growing number of recent hit-and-run accidents in the washington region troublg. the auto club said police departments in d.c., maryland and virginia are all reporting spikes in hit and run crashes. most involve pedestrians, including this one from september 10th, when a 36-year-old man was killed in prince george's county. >> you look at the numbers, i mean, 19,000 hit and runs in maryland last year. about 8,000 reported in virginia. for that driver not to call 911 but to flee the scene, i mean, what kind of person can do that? >> reporter: analysts say most deadly hit-and-run crashes happen at night and on the weekends with alcohol and weather often being major factors. maryland's attorney general has been given the go-ahead to investigate the community group a.c.o.r.n. the investigation into the group comes after this undercover video was posted on the internet.

city trains. investigator says najibullah zazi played a direct role in the plot, which ban to unravel after he made a trip to new york a week ago. the fbi says he carried a laptop computer containing bombmaking constructions. zazi's father and a new york muslim cleric named ahmad afzali re arrested. all three were charged with lying to the fbi. afzali's attorney said he's being made a scapegoat. >> the government wants somebody to blame for the fact they vice president caught any terrorists. >> afzali and zazi are being held into a thursday hearing. zazi's father was placed on home confinement. the fbi says more arrests are coming. they were arrested in colorado. following those arrests, federal officials are warning that rail and transit systems should be on alert. the department of homeland security and fbi say improvised explosive devices are the most common methods used to blow up mass transit and rail systems

overseas. they are asking transit officials here in d.c. to make random sweeps at terminals and stations. police were told to make random patrols and to board trains and buses. the terror warning was sent out to law enforcement authorities across the country. there's a bright spot in the upcoming flu season. tests show most of us will only need one vaccine to protect from the h1n1 strain, the swine flu. kids 10 and older will need to take one dose of the vaccine this year, the same for healthy adults. that's because the swine flu is reacting to the vaccine just like the regular seasonal flu does to that flu shot. however, children 6 months through 9 years old will probably need two doses of the swine flu vaccine, 21 days apart due to their weaker immune system. priority for people at risk for cardiovascular disease. a new study shows influenza can

news for your health tonight. first mountain dew, then red bull, and now the latest of high-octane beverages are called energy shots. two-ounce drinks pack amino acids. they're favorite for college students looking for an extra boost to help them study. just how safe are those little bottles of buzz? >> these are lemon and lime. >> small, quick, easy. >> these are berry flavor. >> i'm going out at night and i had a long day at school so i need to wake up. >> the other flavor is orange. >> a lot of people rely on them. some people substitute them for sleep. >> reporter: when some extra energy is called for, more and more are turning to these instead of coffee. energy shots, they're called, the latest kind of pick-me-up. >> i would say around 100, 120 a

week we sell. when final times we sell close to 400 a week. >> reporter: william owns this 7/eleven store in college park, right next to the university of maryland. of the 5,7007/eleven stores nationwide, his store is the single biggest seller of these drinks. >> the students tried them and they say they're very popular because they have five hours energy drinks. they don't crash. >> reporter: some college students swear by them because they give a big dose of caffeine and you don't have to drink an entire cup of coffee or sugary 16-ounce drink. manufacturers claim they can keep you energized for long periods of time and you won't get that sluggish feeling after they wear off but doctors are warning these shots could be packing more of a wallop then you might think. >> it's more powerful because of the concentration of the stimulant within the drink are different 34i

different. >> reporter: the makers of the popular energy shot don't disclose the amount of caffeine in their products. they say the two-ounce drink is equivalent to an eight-ounce cup of coffee. the extra strength version equal to a 12-ounce cup of coffee but there's no exact amount of caffeine for a cup of coffee either. it can range anywhere between 100 to more than 200 milligrams in an 8-ounce cup. >> unfortunately time will tell that probably is doing this is potentially dangerous. >> reporter: dr. bill frona heads the emergency center department. he's concerned because these energy shots are so small but contain such a large amount of caffei caffeine. >> those folks, older people or people with known heart disease or congenital heart defectsor younger patients, those individuals should not be taking high doses of concentrated forms of stimulant drink. >> reporter: some students believe all of the caffeine can be too much. >> you cannot go to sleep at all. >> it's basically very jittery

and sort of i guess on your toes. it wasn't that pleasant. >> be careful. and the drinks aren't cheap either. they cost about $1.50 an ounce. at that rate a 20-ounce bottle of soda would sell for $30. the number of deaths is climbing as sflood floodwaters sweep through parts of the southeast. it claims six lives, including a toddler. five are reported dead in georgia, one in alabama. others are missing. some parts of georgia have recorded 15 inches of rain in the last week. hundreds of people have been evacuated and many are in shelters across the southeast. boy, and no sign that, that's letting up. >> it's moving off a bit but will be more coming and they've had as much rain almost they get on average in six months, half the year in there. >> wow. >> outside for us tonight, we have been dry, a few clouds. beautiful sunset. some of the low clouds coming in from the east. high clouds tomorrow and tonight, if you look and you saw the sunset, you were facing

exactly west. it only happens two times of the year on the spring equinox and on theequinox. tomorrow, we may not see the sunset. i think there will be a lot of clouds. we were warmer than it was in atlanta and humidity abo the same. that's the pattern. temperature high and low almost the same way lot of clouds. because of the pattern in atmosphere, jet stream diving to the south, we've had that big area of high pressure, wonderful area, but with the moisture coming up from the gulf and that convergence, that's the reason the terrible, terrible rains continue. you can see moved off from atlanta. they're heading more towards the southeast. these are the area still under floodwatches after 10, 15 inches of ra. they're moving off a little bit and th on the west side, though, another batch of heavy

thunderstorms even with some overnight severe thunderstorm watches and warnings coming out for a little bit of unusual, almost early october weather. unfortunately, it will continue down there. marietta, georgia, look at how much rain they've had for the month. 17 inches. this is the last two days, 11 inches of rain. and birmingham, alabama, also with flooding. over four inches of rain. so for us overnight tonight, what we will be seeing is that still general area of high pressure continuing to control our weather. we'll see some of theoisture coming this, but in the form of clouds, not the torrential rains down south. fortunately, those will be breaking up. but on the other hand, as our winds turn more into the south and southwest smshgs humidity coming in after all of that refreshing air. tomorrow morning when you get up and head out, a lot of clouds around some of the low clouds, light, southeasterly wind. a little on the cool side. could some fog around also. tomorrow for the most part, a lot of clouds around. could be a sprinkle. nothing very, very heavy.

7-7. currently, the score 27-23, quotes with less than three minutes to go. the redskins got some very bad news today. they will starting right guard randy thomas for the season because of an injury to his right tricep. it is likely the redskins will decide tomorrow who will start in his place sunday against the lions. on a lighter note, my dad calls me this morning and said, linz, in the fourth quarter i swear i start special teams coordinator danny smith going crazy on coach jim zorn. a lot of people who saw that kn what's he was talking about. we asked zorn about it today. here's the situation. it happened during the fourth quarter of the game before a fourth down play. jim zorn trying to signal the officials for a time-out. look at the special teams coach smith jumping in front of him doin anything he he can to not get the signal off. he knew if they didn't the, they could get the play clock closer to zero. jim zorn described what it felt

there was an unwanted visitor on the campus of a private school near orlando, florida, today. check this out. the school was locked down when a bear what happenederred onto the property, climbed a treat and just hung out there for a while. when he finally decided to come down, he just scampered off. nobody was hurt. officials believe the bear was attracted to the area by trash in a dumpster at the school. in the case of one forme miss virginia, beauty is more than skip deep apparently. tara wheeler is now a reporter for comcast sportsnet. she started the evening with pretty long hair but that's not how she ended it. she's been raising money for pediatric cancer. she decided to mark childhood cancer month by having her head shaved. she said she's been blessed in her life and one way to give back is by raise ago awareness for those who faced life-threatening diseases. there she is, shaved head a all. >> she's a very cool girl. she's made a lot of redskin
