a child returns home to the continue a remarkable recovery months after a tragic lightning strike that made national headlines. on june 3, lightning hit two little league players in virginia. a 12-year-old lost his life that day. his friend and teammate endured months in the hospital. jonathan returned home and is swinging from the fences, once again. >> his leg still bares the scars. jonathan doesn't remember much about the incident. >> playing baseball. >> reporter: his mother heard the thunder. she remembers saying a prayer, not knowing her son was one of two that w struck. the the other boy died that day.

jonathan began his journey to recove recovery. he spoke again and recently swung a bat, again. it was a plastic bat, but it was a home run. >> i take it very seriously. we liose, i'm happy. if we win, i'm happy. >> it's been a journey from the time it happened to now, watching jonathan get stronger and you know, just work hard at getting stronger. >> reporter: with help from the community and all over, mark says his son has been his biggest inspiration. >> maintain a good attitude in joking. at times, he didn't feel well, just making me laugh and cheering us up. just, you know, being himself.

strike on the war in afghanistan. several arrested in connection with a 92-count indictment. jackie is there with more on the story. >> reporter: they absolutely did not care who got in the way of their deadly back and forth retaliation. it looked like a war zone along north capital street in the spring and summer of 2008. >> it happened day after day after day. sometimes there wasn't 24 hours between the retaliations and the original incident. shootings and murder, more than a dozen victims. they were walking by when an intersection erupted. six people were shot near the intersection near capital street. they were coming back from a vigil for a young man that had been murdered three months

into a deadly crash this year. 3407 crashed in buffalo, new york february 12, killing 50 people. that crash prompted criticism of the training and pay of flight crews of smaller carriers. congress said those problems continue. three regional airlines are pressuring pilots to fly if they are too sick or tired. the airlines deny the allegations. on the tracks, the union that represents metro train operators was to stay in the slower manual mode for now. it's not clear what caused june's deadly metro crash. three months after the accident, the transportation safety board revealed information about what failed. an automated control system may

police say a teenager arrested for dealing drugs.

the students use text messages to set up drug deals. the 18-year-old was arrested yesterday. officers say they found marijuana, ecstasy and $1200 cash in his suv. he's a former walter johnson student. police put him under surveillance after getting a call from security. they suspected he was dealing drugs during the school day. a teenager suspected of making homemade bombs plead guilty today. they found it in july of last year. they alleged the 19-year-old had a fake cia id and a map of camp david. the bomb making chemicals belong ed to a russian immigrant. >> when you are in possession of something, you are in possession

of it. it doesn't matter who they belong to or who purchased them. it's an event he participated in by the mere fact he possessed them. >> he'll be back in court for sentencing january 7. he's facing up to ten years in prison. an international hunt for the criminals who pulled off a robbery in europe. two masked robbers dropped from a helicopter on to the roof of a security firm and used explosives to break into the buildings cash storage area. they were able to flee in the helicopter with bags of money. a fake bomb was planted at the helicopter hangar. so much money was taken. the banks and atms may not be able to open tomorrow. the murder haunted her

for her mother, each day is worse by not knowing who killed lisa or why. police believe the case can still be solved. >> reporter: lisa marie was 15 years old when she was murdered in may of 1986. she was full of life. she was a lover of people. >> reporter: on wednesday, may 21, lisa, her mother and brother were at the shopping center for haircuts. lisa wanted to leave while her mother and brother shopped. >> she said i'll be home. i know how you like to talk. >> reporter: she was less than a mile from her house. >> she crossed over the creek here. used to be a bridge. she kept caulking down this path toward her house. >> reporter: the path had foot traffic, but was isolated and bordered by woods. >> kids use it all the time.

you have people living in the woods at the time. they used it. >> reporter: when she got home from shopping, lisa was not there. >> right away, i knew somebody was wrong. she never lied. if she's not going to be somewhere, she calls and lets me know. leaves me a note. very dependable. >> reporter: despite nonstop searches, no sign of lee sa. her body was found three days after she disappeared, 75 yards in the woods. she was partially covered with branches, she had been beaten to death. >> one of her classmates found what looked to be a foot covered. >> she died from blunt force trauma. we did recover dna from the scene. we have a dna profile.

>> there have been no matches so far. >> we believe it was a chance encounter. she met the wrong person at the wrong time. >> reporter: these have been 23 years of agy. >> i promised her, at the funeral, i would search until i found who did this. >> reporter: even now, she pleads for anyone with the slightest piece of information to come forward. >> we are her voice now. her voice went silent by a perpetrator. we are her voice. even the smallest thing you think isn't important could lead us to who did this. >> if you have information that might help close the case, the detectives would like you to call 866-411-tips. an emotional john travolta told the jury about his efforts to save his son's life today.

he testified against two people accused of blackmailing him. travolta described the moments before his son's death. he performed cpr on his autistic son after a nanny told him jett wasn't responding. the defendants are accused of trying to get money in exchange for pictures of his dying son. in the wake of deadly flooding, president obama assured officials their plea for federal aid is getting immediate attention. homes and an entire community are under water. residents returned to their houses to find personal belongings drenched and in floating water. some were able to save ps. at least ten deaths are blamed on torrential downpours over the weekend. is there relief in sight? >> it's been raining but flood

waters are subsiding. it's going to be a long time for recovery. >> for us, we had the warm, southwesterly winds. a bit of humidity out there. our temperature, as we look over a steamy washington, 77 degrees. way above average, but not close to the record. can you imagine, 1895. look at the temperatures around the high temperatures. we were at 87 degrees to the south. it was cool weather. san antonio, today, only 65 degrees. right now, we're at 77 in washington. we'll see a lot of 70s and 80s to the south. the humidity and dew points, it still feels like it's 81 degrees outside. we have a weak weather front coming our way. the circulation is back here in the south and southeast. fortunately, you can see georgia and parts of alabama not getting rain tonight. for us, here is what's going on.

you can see the area of showers, thundershowers that moved up north of baltimore. they are in another area coming through as we go through the nighttime hours through western maryland, here and around washington. a few showers around gaithersburg. the other batch is moving away. a few leftover showers. the south and southeast, the good news is while there are still flood warnings out for parts of georgia and alabama, just showers around mississippi. around jackson, mississippi. th thurmont. look at how much rain has fallen. last week, 20 to 30 inches of rain in parts of georgia. we'll have the southwesterly nd with a humid pattern, then a little weather front coming through. windsurning to the northeast as we get into friday. still to the south and

the famous hope diamond is sparkling in a different light. visitors to the smithsonian have seen the largest blue diamond surrounded by 16 diamonds suspended from a chain containing 45 diamonds. the 45.5 carrot gem is on display. check it out. it's worth about $250 million. good night.
