from june's deadly accident to other safety concerns. now some want to know if john catoe will remain in charge. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning. with all of metro's problems there are many people who are calling for big changes. but should such change be made at the very top? general manager john catoe's three-year contract expires in january, and the metro board could vote today whether to extend it or not. these have not been good times for metro. still reeling from june's deadly train collision, the transit agency has also been rocked by the death of four employees in separate work-related accidents. and in recent months there have been issues with delays and station closures. it all comes as metro general manager john catoe's contract is set to expire. >> he has said repeatedly he would be willing to stay on,

would prefer to stay on here. he's got a pretty high energy level, especially since considering what's going on during the summer. he tackles issues head on and has said again that he serves at the pleasure of our board. >> reporter: will catoe be asked to stay on. that's up to the board. they take up the issue today. if the chairman has his way the answer will be yes. >> any kind of change at this point in time would be very detrime detrimental to everyone. >> you think he's the man? >> i do. i was excited when we hired him. he's shown a steady hand. >> reporter: ang metro riders opinions are mixed. >> i think there are certainly changes in store for metro that need to be done. whether or not the general manager's, whether changing that will solve it i don't know. >> no should not. >> sfwhi. >> we've been having problems over the last two, three years, the trains are not working, we

have so much delay on the red line. >> no. everybody blames everybody. he should stay. yes. >> reporter: now, the board will discuss the issue in executive session, and then it's possible that they could vote once they go into public session, or they could decide just to delay this altogether, put such a vote in discussion off into the future. we're going to have to wait and see. john catoe does have strong support among the board members. back to you. >> do their meetings last through the day? or should they be coming out? >> they do. but there are generally different sections, different breakdowns, commit reports that are given and they take up a variety of issues but they are going to have to do that, any discussion, in a closed executive session, voting in a public session. >> thank you, megan. some in manage manage are looking for a busy thief. he strikes during the weekends.

the devil. yesterday chavez had a different reaction to the president obama'sspeech. chavez said that he was pleased that mr. obama spoke about promoting peace. chavez question whd the white house's foreign policy would live up to president obama's words. >> let's look outside. we've got a lot of clouds, see a plane climbing into the clouds, leaving reagan national airport. 81 degrees our temperature. it's warmed up out there. >> yeah, in fact up a couple more degrees. one more day to revel in summer-like heat in early autumn. as we look at radar we don't have precipitation, these clouds are not producing rain. but we do have considerable cloudiness pushing through. that's not stopping temperatures now 84 in washington. we're in the low 80s in prince george's county, arlington, montgomery counties. the panhandle of west virginia, there is more cloudiness so temperatures are in the 70s. a little breeze off the bay will keep it cooler there as well as

college park to silver spring. over at springfield doing pretty well north and southbound i-95. south of here the road work blocking the right lane in both directions. back to you. >> thanks very much, steve. >> thank you, steve. new today, could there be an aids vaccine? researchers are optimistic after ground breaking results of a new trial. for the first time an experimental vaccine prevented infection with hiv. the results are part of the largest aids vaccine trial sponsored in part by the u.s. army. researchers say there is more work to do but say these are promising results. the hiv rate is 3% t highest in the nation. this morning a new treatment center is opening in northwest washington. the aids health care foundation is holding a ribbon cutting for the bla underwood center named after the actor because he's also an aids activist.

learned who will fill ted kennedy's senate southeast minutes ago massachusetts governor deval patrick appointed paul kirk. you can see in this live pick turks that's the governor behind him over his shoulder, we last saw paul kirk when he was the master of ceremonies at the service for ted kennedy at the presidential library. a long time former aide to senator kennedy he received the support of kennedy's sons as well. the governor says kirk will not seek to hold the senate seat permanently in special election coming up. republicans are urging the massachusetts secretary of state to reject the governor's emergency declaration that allows him to appoint this temporary setor. also new, a major announcement from tim kaine. he is expected to announce that saic will move to fairfax county from san diego.

the corporation has an office in mclean that houses 16,000 people. this move will be bringing another 1200 so called high paying jobs to fairfax county. actor john travolta is in the bahamas to testify in an extortion trial connected to the tragic death of his son. he took the witness stand yesterday for the first time and painfully relived the final moments of his son's death. michelle cosin ski has the story. >> reporter: locking somber and pale john travolta returned to the bahamas first the first time since their son died at their vacation home. travolta stood and made a startling admission. my son was autistic, he suffered from a seizure disorder, he said, describing severe seizures every five to ten days, lasting up to a minute after which jett would sleep 12 hours. it's the first time the family

acknowledged their son's autism. he took drugs for years until they were causing physical harm. travolta said on the morning his son was found he was suddenly awakened. the nanny was pounding on the door. i ran at the door, i ran downstairs to help my son with my wife. i saw him, he was on the bathroom floor. he said another nanny and hotel employee were already performing cpr on jett and john jumped in to take over mouth-to-mouth breathing. we continued. my wife was holding my son's head. officials say at first travolta considered having the ambulance take jett to the airport so he could be treated in the u.s. to do that he signed a waiver refusing local treatment that he said he did not read. time was of the essence he told the court. but travolta changed his mind and paramedics took jett to a hospital. days later travolta claims one of the paramedics tried to sell him that waiver to keep it private and that the paramedics' attorney called travolta's

lawyer with an asking price of $25 million. both are now accused of attempted extortion. they say they are innocent. >> thiss an embarrassing situation for the bahamas. you've got a former senator who is accused of demanding $25 million from john travolta in exchange for a medical document. >> reporter: travolta at times emotional is still grieving the loss of his son. when asked by the prosecutor the if jett was alive after they brought him to the hospital he replied quietly, no, he was not alive. >> that was michelle coshinski. yesterday travolta kept being interrupted by defense attorneys who argued if his testimony should be allowed. travolta is expected to testify again tomorrow. >> tom joins us on the set. talk about the weather. boy, feels like a summer day. >> sure does. >> call at summer day then. >> yeah. >> sometimes the atmosphere

doesn't look at the calendar. that's what's happening today. autumn is certainly a battle between summer and winter. summer winning out here as we get into early autumn. here's a look at our sky over the last couple of hours looking to the west. american university in the foreground, virginia in the distance. and you can see clouds that are coming in from the west and the northwest, after some sunshine broke out have pretty much started to roll back on through here in many areas now getting quite a bit of a cloud cover now pushing through, which is blocking the sun. it's not keepi that temperature from warming up. let's look at the live picture now, the sky watcher camera showing considerable cloudiness at this hour. we do have temperatures that have hit the 80s now, there's the view over the potomac river. there's sunshine pouring down there at reagan national. right now the temperature is at 84, the record high today, 94. set on this date back in 1970. so september can be hot even in

late september and early october, not unheard of for temperatures to hit the 90s. we're not going to do that today. let's look at radar. the clouds are not producing rain around the region. but it is certainly warm. we're in the low and mid 80s around washington and in prince george's county, montgomery, fairfax and arlington counties. near the bay there's a bit of a wind off the water so temperatures upper 70s to near 80. more cloudiness hagerstown and martinsburg, temperatures in the upper 70s. elsewhere, chantilly, virginia at 82, and the humidity continues to drop there as well. the winds have now shifted into the north. we had cool front coming through and that has begun to bring in cooler air into the mountains as well as some drier air. these are the current temperatures, 80s across most of virginia, eastern shore in the upper 70s to near 80. these are the current dew points, 65 in washington, the dew point at dawn was 70. so it has continued to dry out a bit. it will do so slowly throughout

the afternoon. here's a look at the vw from space over six hours watching clouds rolling in from the northwest. all coming from a weather system that is stalled in the midwest. we have this cool front that has sagged to our south here over the last couple of hours. pushing this humidity farther to the south. and as we do get in the afternoon we'll have some of this drier air continuing to move on through. now as we go forward, don't anticipate showers today or however tomorrow morning in the early afternoon there may be showers to the south of washington. otherwise notice it will be much cooler tomorrow. and into the weekend, too. here's how we're looking the rest of the afternoon. feeling like sum e highs reaching the upper 80s. can't rule out isolated spots that see more sun, may hit near 90 degrees. for a brief time because of these kaylight hours getting shorter it wouldn't last long. and good for tonight's game at nationals park. pitch time at 7:05. the rest of the evening mostly cloudy, might have a passing shower, to the south tomorrow

natural history. this time without its usual ornate setting. it's the largest blue diamond. it will be on display while a new setting is fabricated. >> this story will have you thinking that your eyes are playing tricks on you or somebody is. a group of college students in texas made what they say is the longest basketball shot ever. check it out. what? that shot was made from the third deck o the football stadium at texas. here is a look at it. even the slow motion, a group of six students set this thing up. some people are questioning the video's accuracy, though. the computer experts, though, reportedly say they found no edits in the tape. the video has been viewed more than a million times online.

here's a look at some of the top stories we're following. president obama is at the united nations again where he is presiding over talks about nuclear weapons. during the talks the council unanimously approved the the u.s.-sponsored resolution aimed at ridding the world of nuclear weapons. metro's board is meeting to discuss many topics including john catoe's contract. metro experienced a lot of problems from june's deadly crash to deadly concerns and closures. the board says catoe has their support. massachusetts avenue is open after a nightmare commute in washington. it began with reports of a suspicious package near the islamic center in washington. massachusetts avenue was shut

down but it was reopened when authorities gave the all clear. however, there were major traffic tie-ups throughout the morning. it's a recovery that some might call a miracle. two little league players hit by lightning in spotsylvania county. it took life of a 12-year-old. in a story we brought you, jonathan has returned home now. he is swinging from the fences again. derrick ward reports. >> reporter: his legs still bear the scars where the charge from the lightning left his body after striking him in the head. he doesn't remember much about the incident, just the moment before. >> playing baseball. >> reporter: his mother lerd the thunder and remembered saying a prayer not knowing her son was one of two players struck and her son would be the only survivor. the teammate died on that fateful day at lee hill park. jonathan began his joran tee

recovery. two months after and he swung a bat again. it was a home run. >> it's my favorite sport so i take it very seriously and i'm happy if we win i'm happy. >> it's been a journey, from the time it happened till now. just watching jonathan just get stronger and youknow, just work hard at getting stronger. >> reporter: there has been help from the community and all over. but mark says his son has been the biggest inspiration through his show of inner strength. >> maintain a very good attitude and joking and even at times when he'd -- he didn't feel well, just, you know,aking me laugh and cheering us up. just being himself. >> reporter: maybe another two years before jonathan is fully recovered, but according to the

doctors there's been a miracle. >> the main doctor came in when jonathan was discharged and he said, i wish i could take credit for thi one. god saved -- god did this. >> reporter: jonathan has his future plans mapped out. >> to move to australia, have 14 kids. and have a house that's in a bubble so no burglars can get in. >> reporter: derrick ward, news 4. >> we have a site set up to help him. find it at help jonathan.com. >> a teen haseen arrested for dealing drugs to students outside a school. the 18-year-old was arrested tuesday in bethesda. police found marijuana and about $1200 in cash in his suv. according to investigators, he used text messages to set up deals at walter johnson high

school. police had put him under surveillance after getting a call from a school security guard who found the activities suspicious. two arrests in the murder of a woman from fairfax county. one was her roommate. erica yancey disappeared. police found her body in the trunk of her ca now police arrested 27-year-old michael thomas and 28-year-d marcus williams. relatives say that yansy lived with the couples children. the police have not released a possible motive in the case. >> the fight over plans to build a walmart near a battlefield is heathing up. the board approved plans to build a super center in locust grove less than a half mile from the battlefield. now spt preservationists and residents file add challenge saying it was flawed. walmart said the store will be out of view of the battlefield.

we are connected to your commute and this morning we have new information on what will be a new option for drivers. construction is well under way on the inner count connector. we know how much it's going to cost if you want to use it. the transportation authority announces 25 to 35 cents per mile during rush hours. the rest of the time 20 to 30 cents per mile t. tols are going to be electronic and drivers who don't have the ez pass will be billed by mail for the toll plus $3, a service fee. the icc will run 18 miles from montgomery county to prince george's county. >> let's take another look outside this morning. and see what the weather is going to be. kind of steamy right now. >> let's talk to tom kierein what he's expecting for the rest of the day and into tomorrow. good morning. >> kind of steamy, actually the humidity has been dropping all morning. and it will continue to do so into the rest of the afternoon as we had a cool front pass through quietly. and now as we look off to the west, quite a bit of cloudiness but it's certainly unusually

warm for late september. it's in the mid 80s and radar scanning the sky, no precipitation. low and mid 80s from the blue ridge to the atlantic seaboard. west it's in the 70s. mount airy out in western howard county at 77. their dew points continue to drop into the mid 60s. look at the dew points around the region. they dropped into the mid 60s, they were around 70 predawn. and it is still steamy, though, the lower part of the eastern shore through southeast virginia into the carolinas with lower humidity moving in from the west-northwest over the last six hours. we've seen some clouds rolling back in after sunshine aroun the region. so, for the rest of the afternoon, partly sunny and becoming even less humid as it is now. even though it's going to climb into the upper 80s. a northerly breeze flew the afternoon. then clouds will likely cover the sky. there is a small chance of a passing shower tomorrow morning mainly to the south of washington. then climb only into the low 70s for highs tomorrow, persistent northeast breeze should keep us

cool and should be partly cloudy by the afternoon and partly sunny saturday morning and clouding up in the afternoon. a likely shower afternoon and evening on saturday and cool only in the 60s for highs, warming up a bit on sunday. back in the 70s and partly cloudy as well as on monday. then cool autumn-like weather with a clear blue sky, tuesday into wednesday. highs only in the 60s. morning lows 40s to near 50. barb and joe. >> let's check the mid ta traffic with steve. good morning. >> we're going to look at the american legion bridge now. traffic heading toward us is on the outer loop heading from virginia into maryland as you can see not in the left lane. they have the left lane blocked for construction. not too bad to get across. heavy but steady traffic through the work zone over to the maryland shoreline you have all of your lanes back. over to springfield, moving well north and southbound leaving the springfield interchange. road work is northbound on i-95 near lorton blocking one right lane. >> thanks very much. some pharmacists are seeing the

shortage of the flu drug tamiflu. it's one that works against the swine flu and also used to treat seasonal flu. the rug madrug maker is trying p up since the flu appeared in april t. company decided to focus on adult strength pills rather than the children's version. a spokesman says that adult pills are still in good supply and pharmacies can grind them up into smaller doses for children. the makers of tylenol announced a voluntary recall of some batches of children's tylenol and infant drops. the company has not said if kids have gotten sick or how many bottles are being pulled. if you purchased one of these or have question there is is an 800 number to call. 1-800-962-5357. if you suffer from seasonal

allergies listen up. it's not just the pollen. dr. nancy snyderman has more on that and more in today's health news. >> reporter: many people with asthma say symptoms get worse when the weather changes and now there is proof that it's true, especially for ildren. a new report from the university of michigan school of medicine says emergency room visits for kids with asthma go up when the temperature and humidity go up. experts say er visits are up the most when temperature was up 10 degrees or when the humidity was up 10%. becoming a doctor is a long, hard process. and now a new report says that resident physicians are stressed out and they know it and that that stress can lead to mistakes. a new report says resident doctors admit that sleepiness, general stress and mental fatigue are part of their daily lives, but a lot of them say they are required to put in at least 80 hours of work a week, sometimes more than 100 or more.

california. here's how it occurs. a homeowner winds up owing in cases hundreds of thousands more than his or her home is worth. so, that person goes out and buy as less expensive home, and let's the other get foreclosed on even though the practice is legal, most agents if they find out that the homeowner is trying to do this will try to put a stop to it. >> personally, it makes me sad and makes me angry. >> if they contact us, sorry, we can't help you. we will not be part of the fraud. >> many people have gotten away with this. this increasing foreclosure problem in many places, and the ondown side to the homeowner of this practice will severely damage the homeowner's credit. new jobless numbers released this morning. >> let's check win courtney reagan with more on that and the rest of the day's business. >> hi, courtney. >> good morning. right now stocks are lower. we were higher earlier today but then we got these home sales

numbers we'll go through. asian markets fell overnight and europe is lower at this hour so we're seeing a lot of red around the world. unemployment benefits fell to a total of 530,000. that's in fact the lowest since the week ending july 11. but existing home sales, they fell 2.7% in august. economists had been expecting an increase so that sort of flipped stocks and now we're lower as a result. the fed, though, kept rates low as expected during yesterday's announcement. but is changing some of the programs that were created during the financial crisis. it will extend one intended to lower mortgage rates and prop up the housing market through the end of march rather than halting it the end of the year. however, the central bank will scale back two of its emergency lending programs citing improvement in financial markets for reducing the programs but the fed remains concerned about possible market pressures through year-end.

in an annual survey, virginia claims the title as the top state to do business for the fourth straight year. behind virginia were utah, washington, north carolina and georgia. virginia won the top spot based on the cost of doing business, labor supply, regulatory environment, economic climate, growth prospects and overall quality of life. back to you in d.c. >> okay. thanks very much, courtney. today's wednesday's child has a birthday coming up this weekend. he's going to be 7 years old and the best birthday gift he could get would be a new loving adoptive family. we took him to a little bit of fun to celebrate his day. >> hi. how are you? >> good. >> glad to see you. guess what we get to do today? >> make cup cakes. >> yes. >> with demarcus's birthday around the corner we made a special trip to georgetown cup cake where the sisters were

good morning. welcome back. we're looking ahead to the weekend scene. joining us again is livonia. thanks for joining us. good to hav you. things going well now. let's talk about things between now and the end of the year. let's start with october. >> october, it's the hardest decision you have to make in the month of october is which jersey to put on. the verizon center is a huge time for sports. it starts with the cats, so get your red jerseys on and the caps start the season officially starts next week. and then you wait a couple weeks and it's wizards time.

of course the wizards are great. and then the hoyas in november. so many reasons to be out cheering on a team this. >> good month to be downtown. everybody else is looking at the trees you can catch all of the sports. >> absolutely. >> in november we have d.c. photo week returning. >> it is. and it's so amazing. it's only the second year for d.c. photo week. last year, at about 20,000 people came out to see the exhibitions. there are exhibitions at major museums, then generally they have a space where you can also come and see a lot of local photography and there is a competition. >> good. then in december we have the washington jewish film festival. >> the 20th year. and this year it's special. one of the films they are showing is the last film that patrick swayze made called "jump." it's around a criminal trial in

steamy but the drier air should move in as the day progresses. we have clouds moving in from the northwest, so a partly sunny afternoon, gradually less humid as the afternoon progresses, afternoon highs reaching the upper 80s. even with the northerly breeze. then overnight tonight should be mostly cloudy, the 70s through the evening. should be good weather for the nationals and the dodgers at nationals park. sunset at 7:02. there is a chance of a passing shower predawn on friday, in the mid 60s tomorrow and only warm to the low 70s tomorrow afternoon. partly cloudy, with a northeast breeze. then saturday increasing clouds, afternoon and evening showers likely. highs only in the 60s. then warmer on sunday, partly cloudy, upper 70s. we'll see you tomorrow morning. >> okay. thanks, tom. >> thanks, tom. take a look at this. two elk squared off for a fight and they both lost. a rancher stumbled upon this in colorado. the elk locked together and tangled in barbed wire. several men came to help, roping the elk and holding them down
