i am eun yang in for keith garvin thi morning. we are going to take a look at the top stories in a moment, but first a look at the weather. >> for now everything is very wet outside. not much in the way of rain coming down, but mist and drizzle and rain overnight left morning. a few more scattered showers moving on the parts of the shenandoah valley. we won't see anything like the heavy steadyain we saw overnight last night. most neighborhoods picking up between an inch and inch and a half of rain. and it's a milder start outside first thing this morning compared to yesterday. we will have many more dry hours to come and then a chance of a

brief passing shower today. most of the afternoon will be usable for outdoor activities. >> thank you, chuck. police say they are trying to figure out what led a father to kill his family. he murdered his wife and two children before killing himself. one of the kids, 14-year-old,turely, was a junior firefighter. and darcy spencer has more. >> reporter: at the voluntary station, firefighters spring into action after receiving a call. here they are doing their jobs with heavy hearts. a jr. firefighter, charlie dalton jr. was killed at the hands of his own father. >> he had been a junior member for about years, a little less than two years.

he was enthusistic about his duties here. >> reporter: the man killed his wife, jennifer, and two kids. each was shot once. they were found in their beds. the bodies discovered inside their home, police say dalton took his own life. his body found on the floor next to the bed in the master bedroom. >> people in the neighborhood try to figure out how this could have happened. >> police say dalton was a self-employed cabinet maker, and carpenter, and so far police have found no clear motive for the murder suicide. >> it's just a shock. the only reason my girl got to sleep last night was because she was exhausted from crying.

>> reporter: charlie's fellow junior firefighters were told about his death at the firefighter station on friday night. >> we are going to miss charlie. he was going to be a good member of us in time. >> reporter: police say the beagle was found shot dead inside of the dalton home. police are trying to figure out why this all happened. a suicide note was not left behind. >> crisis teams will be at the schools where the children attended when they are back in session on tuesday. and then a man was found inside the home on majle drive. police say they were responding to a report of a robbery in the home. other people were home at the time but were not hurt. police believe the crime was lan dumb and the victim was not

targeted. >> director roman polanski has been arrested. he fled after a year of pleading guilty for having sex with a underaged girl. organizers of the film festival said polanski travelled7:i swi land. iran says the new facility will not be operational for 18 months, so no u.n. rules have been violated. they said iran will allow the nuclear agency to inspect it. and meanwhile, mahmoud

a lab technician, raymond clark, was charged with murder. >> i believe that from anybo that i say that it was through the little things that she did, her silliness and not her academic achievement that she made the most impression on us. >> a promising student, and a young woman in love, and the victim of a senseless murder. she is gone but her memory remains. chlt i miss you and i will always love you. >> reporter: a tearful good by for a young woman surrounded by love, in both life and death. a major safety initiative taken by metro after june's deadly rail crash is being called a pr move in morning. they are moving the 1,000 cars

area. be ready for a wet start even though the rain is done. it's a cloudy start in washington with a very low ceiling of clouds hanging over head. temperatures are inching their way up into the 60s. it's 66 degrees at national airport with a light wind out of the southeast at 5 to 10 miles per hour. rainfall amounts, generous amounts of rain from mother nature last night, 1.6 inches of rain last night. i suspect we may get below 50 before the upcoming week is done. right now, off to a mild and muggy start almost. temperatures in the mid-60s with dew points also in the low to mid-60s across the area.

most of the study rains are in southern maryland, headed over the lower portions of the chesapeake bay. most of your sunday will be dry. just can't guarantee 100% of dry weather. lots of moisture out there. all the push of rain is moving its way out of the area. and, again, as another little ripple of low pressure rolls through here this afternoon, it may generate one or two passing showers. most of the rain is done at this point in time. and then we have a passing shower later this afternoon. and clear skies overnight tonight, a bright and sunny dry start to your monday. another chance of passing showers will come in late monday

>> yes, every year the agriculture center encourages kids to draw here. and this is the winner. she is 10 years old. this is the ceiling of her church. the jges thought that was a very unusual perspective, which is really what attracted them. second place went to this picture. i bet you can recognize where this is. this is the national building museum. and 10 years old. the judges thought the way it showed the arches was really beautiful. and that it was a different angle. this is where you would look up. elijah got credit for that.

mother, jennifer dalton, were all found dead in their beds on friday. charles dalton is believed to kill his family and even the family dog. the neighbors say it's hard to believe. >> sweet, great kids. very devout, church-going family. people in the neighborhood are trying to put the pieces together. we are trying to figure out how this could happen. the home on contour road had been on the market for over a year, but no signs of trouble. >> they were very spiritual people. and so it was the last -- it was the last thing that you would think of. >> reporter: while state police

ruled it a murder suicide, there are some questions like why that may never be answered. we are learning more about the california man accused of killing four people in virginia. a cabdriver says the boy said he and his girlfriend had a fight over a tt she received from another man. the murders happened at a home near long wood university. the road to richmond heads right through northern virginia today. candidates creigh deeds and mcdonnell will be campaigning in our area. we have more on the race. >> recent polls show the race is tightening. as the election day gets closer, both candidates are going after

voter-rich northern virginia. creigh deeds will be speaking this evening at a virginia candidates night. and bob mcdonnell will not be there but congressman davis will attend the dinner in his place. a lot of attention has gone towards mcdonnell's graduate school thesis arguing against gay rights and women in the workplace. you might remember a few points back his novel writing came under attack. >> bob mcdonnell wrote this in terms of stating his political beliefs two years before he decided to run for office. she would be asked to explain

66 in annapolis right now. 63 in fairfax. and 64 in frederick, this morning. here is a check of the radar. the scan is on. most of the steady or light rain showers moving on to the eastern shore. a broader view shows a dry spot here across the virginia piedmont. gradually most of that will not live as it goes over the mountains, but that's indicating a low impulse. it may generate isolated showers this afternoon. and 60s around the eastern seaboard. the drier air is back off to the west. it will come in this afternoon on the heals els of a westerly .

and now we are mostly dry across the area. one or two lonely showers. the ripple of low pressure is riding over head. you can see the depiction of the heavier rains moving out. and then another fast-moving weather front brings us a chance for showers as we get into tomorrow. for today, believe it or not, you will see a little sunshine late this morning and early this afternoon. skies will gradually clear out later today. highs today will be in the 70s. tomorrow we will start with sunshine and end with clouds and a chance for rain. ex then autumn arifs in the weather world. and lows are way down in the 40s for the western suburbs. and central west virginia might have frost this week. >> please don't say frost, because it's still september. virginia tech and maryland
