vestigators say the recent leak could have had the same results. megan mcgrath joins us from the shopping center now. good morning. >> reporter: we are here at the backside of the pennmar shopping center. they are trying to locate the source of the leak. now, these are the same circumstances that we saw back in may. leaking pipe allowed to build-up rather of natural gas inside stores here at the shopping center. now, fortunately this time around the problem was caught before there was an explosion. >> reporter: the store and 12 others in the shopping center were evacuated sunday, after a leak caused a dangerous buildup of gas inside some shops. it's the second time in four months that it has happened.

in another incident last may, a gas leak caused this massive explosion at the other end of the strip mall. nine firefighters were hurt by the flying debris. and phil ferrera owns the liquor store here and opened for business this morning but admits he is a little concerned. >> yeah, it worries me a bit, but owning the place i have to be here. >> there was no explosion in sunday's incident, but there was a close call. firefighter officials say they found atmospheric readings at 3.5%, and a blast is possible when it reaches 4%. >> everything wears out in time. nothing lasts forever. it has to be done before somebody gets killed. >> marshals, petco and america's best eyeglasses did not open this morning.

crews cut gas and electricity to those stores yesterday. utilities won't be restored until repairs are made. >> reporter: the work that is being done here right now is to actually locate and then repair the leaking gas main. now we spoke to washington gas a little while ago. what, if anything, will be done in terms of a long-term strategy here they say they don't know at this point, they have to investigate and figure out exactly what is going on here and then they will be able to comment on if any additional steps need to be taken at a later time. >> what about shoppers? do you think people are being scared off to the mall in general, and not just to the stores closed? >> reporter: the shoppers food warehouse down the street, that has been busy all morning long. we have seen people coming to the shopping center. right now in terms of the impact on shoppers, we are seeing just a couple of stores that are impacted. we are not sure when they are going to reopen.

we are still seeing activity here at the mall. >> all right. megan, thank you. right now, a teenager accused of murdering a mother and son is having his day in court. he was 17 years old and a neighbor of jean smith and her son james when they were killed last december. police say he murdered them during a botched robbery. the lawyers wanted to move the trial out of prince william county saying the news coverage would jeopardize a right to a fair trial but a judge rejected the motion. new at midday, local transportation officials are using sobering statistics about the dangers of distracted driving. 1 in 4 beltway drivers read or write a text message while driving. those that reported texting behind the meal are 20 times more at risk to have an accident. they want drivers to know the

potential consequences of distracted driving a. , especia in a construction zone. and now a ban on texting while driving takes affect as of thursday, but many are wondering how police will enforce it. the wording of the law makes it illegal to write and send a message, but it's still legal to read one. looking outside right now, this could be the last warmish kind of day for a while. let's see how warm it might get. >> let's talk to tom kierein about that. good morning. >> already, it's around 70 degrees. that picture of the view of the potomac river, and the winds are beginning to pick up ahead of a cool front sweeping over the region. right now as we take a look at the radar, that is producing precipitation from north eastern pennsylvaniaall the way down into western maryland, and now into the panhandle of west virginia, and points further to the south. it's a narrow line of rain.

right now at this hour, the leading edge of that is now moving into the panhandle of west virginia, just now coming into al gainy county, and heading off to the north and east, elsewhere we are dry at this hour. the temperatures are around 70, and 71 in washington. and we will see it maybe climb another four or five degrees later this afternoon. behind the front, it's down into the 50s and 60s at this hour. it's going to continue to head off to the east and quickly come on through, so our sky will quickly become cloudy in the next few hours, and a chance of a passing quick shower and a blus yutery wind. winds are gusting to 25 miles per hour, and it will turn cooler tomorrow morning. a look at that and the rest of the week and the weekend, and that is coming up in a few minutes, barbara and joe. >> thank you, very much. steve, with midday traffic. >> good morning, joe and barbara. midday roadwork is back with us again today.

in two days. is tehran working eventually to arm missiles with a nuclear war head. that's the u.s. suspicion. the u.s. and allies revealed friday iran has been building a processing plant for years in secret. >> it has been unnoticed. when we meet with them on october 1st, they have to come clean. >> reporter: they meet with iran this week on long-term weapons goals. >> there is the opportunity for severe additional sanctions. >> reporter: on tuesday, war strategy in afghanistan tops president obama's agenda. general mcchrystal meets with the president as well as general gates and hillary clinton. she said sorting out election results in afghanistan is step one in u.s. strategy review. >> it's not over yet. we have to wait until it is

the september precipitation so far, thanks to the rains that we had on saturday, about three and a quarter inches this month. and that's about 2/10 of an inch below average. maybe a few passing showers as the front arrives. ahead of the front, the winds are picking up. as we look at radar now, we don't have any precipitation in washington. and these are some light showers in the blue, just now coming into the panhandle of west virginia. moderate showers coming into al gainy county. at this time, these are the lows that we had this morning. it got down to 48. manassas and culpepper, it was a cool morning around the shenandoah valley, and it bottomed out at 57 at reagan national. and now it's near 70. out ahead of the front, just had a gust at reagan national at 35 miles per hour, just had a gust at dulles to 31-mile-per-hour. the winds are really picking up. and silver spring now 70.

they had blustery winds there, and their morning low was at 52 in montgomery county. and now the rain come into west virginia. and behind that front, much cooler air is beginning to move on in. it's moving rapidly to the east, and will rapidly see the clouds on the increase. all of this coming from a powerful low pressure system spinning over the great lakes. they have 10-foot waves on lake superior right now. temperatures in the northern plains and parts of the northern rockies down below freezing this morning. for us, we have a front beginning to move in. it will sweep here between noon and 4:00 p.m. out ahead, we have the southwesterly slow winds. and as we go forward over the next 36 hours, we will quickly see the front moving thugh, and then clearing out a bit tonight. and then a few clouds around tomorrow. still, some rather blustery winds around on tuesday. then as we get into wednesday, the winds should relax.

this is how we are looking for the afternoon. our highs will reach the mid-70s. and the clouds rolling on in. now, they will have no exit by the evening. the sunset today is 6:55. and partly cloudy, and windy and cooler tomorrow. winds could gust 35 to 40 tomorrow with highs only reaching the 60s. it will certainly feel cooler with the wind. and then the winds will diminish on wednesday and thursday. morning lows on 40s. sunshine in a out. and then friday into saturday, we will have increasing clouds near 70. maybe a passing shower on saturday. and then dry and warm on sunday. that's the way it looks. steve, what do you see in the traffic. >> good traffic right now on 270. everything is looking very good. there is a work zone on northbound 270, but really not causing much of a back up at

all. we will take you to a map over to the right. the cones, again, they are working back again today on both sides of dc 295. and two lanes are getting by. just a bit of a backup there. barbara? >> thank you, steve. the redskins are licking their wounds today after being tamed by the lions. and we talk to the players after the tough loss. >> based on where i was staing on the field after the game, the redskins made the lions feel as though they won the super bowl, especially after losing 19 straight games. the redskins' offense did not show up until the second half of the game, and the redskins defense allowed the lions to convert on 18 of the opportunities. in the first half, it looked like the redskins brought the same end zone repellant.

the first chance to get it in. fourth and one at the 1. and portious goes left. but he is struck. the redskins miss the opportunity to get on the board first. jim zoren said he never believed they could march down there to get a touchdown, but that's what they did. and then staffford looks for the target and finds him. number 80, johnson. and there to make the 21-yard touchdown catch over rogers, detroit takes the 13-0 lead at the half. and then the redskins come out firing in the third quarter. it took three plays to go 73 yards. pretty impressive. less than two minutes. santana finds moss, and a great touchdown, but despite that the redskins would only produce one more td. and they are left now to pick up the pieces. >> either you win or you don't.

right now at 11:30, iran is defined. they tested missiles overnight. tensions were already high after revelations of a sret nuclear facility in iran. and iran's nuclear ambitions will be on the agenda for six-nation talks on thursday. several stores out a prince georges' strip mall will be closed today while crews work to repair a gas leak. it was found in penn mar shopping center. you may remember a similar gas leak at this mall back in may which caused a massive explosion that injured nine firefighters. transportation officials in virginia are wrapping up a press conference near the hot lanes work zone. they want drivers to know about the consequences of distracted driving in constructson zones. 1 in 4 beltway drivers read or

before you celebrate, the airlines are ready to collect their targeting holiday travelers. delta, northwest and us airways will charge $10 extra just to fly on the sunday after thanksgiving and the weekend after new year's. >> another way and another scheme to, you know, continue to pump money out of the consumer. >> it's never ending. fees are every ending. >> fares are dropping, and it's the surcharges that are skyrocketing. the airlines collected $2.3 billion in fees alone. this year it spiked more than 50% to 3.5 billion. >> it's the fly wur beware. their mission is to show you rock bottom prices, and then once you do that, you get the travel fever. >> customers complain the fees are hidden. you book a flight and the fare seems reasonable and then you get tthe total price and the price jumped, and then that's before you get to the airport

and pay the checked baggage fees. >> all of a sudden we think, boom, what the heck just happened? >> many operators are still operating in the red and some say they need the fees to stay in business. most airlines charge $15 to $20 for the first checked bag. and jet blue charges $30 for a preferred seat. and british airways announced they will charge to select a seat in advance. >> after i gave them the credit card, the ad said more seats were taken and your ticket costs more. customer complaints are down more, but at what costs. anybody heading overseas for the holiday will pay more as well. most major airlines added baggage fees, up to $55 for international travel. can you get out of them, and most airlines wave the baggage fees for high level frequent

flyers, and active duty military personnel. a heads up to anybody that uses fairfax connector route 380. starting today that bus routed will be rerouted. the temporary route will start at the park and ride and travel down the fairfax county parkway and then travel straight to the pentagon. the temporary detour is in place so construction can begin at the metro station. strict rules at home could protect teens when they head out on the road. teens' whose parents were characterized that had rules and were supportive had less crash risk and less likely to use a cell phone while driving. active parenting was linked to

effective. an interesting segment. don't miss it. join us at news4 at 4:00. and now here is tom for a look at the forecast. >> live view from the city camera, and the winds out ahead of a front that will be sweeping through over the next few hours, bringing clouds and a chance of rain. right now, still sunny. no showers around locally. but way out here in the mountains, we have some. here in western washington county, these are about to enter the shenandoah valley. and ahead of that, temperatures are in the low 70s and will peek in the mid-70s. these are the latest wind gusts we have had. we have 35-mile-per-hour gusts at reagan national. we will see it for the next few hours out of the south and southwest. and now out around the mountains temperatures are in the 60s. tonight we will see the temperatures dropping after the winds kick in to the northwest.
